How Private Schools Help Students
FLOURISH IN CLASS...AND BEYOND BY KAREN FINUCAN CLARKSON
THE DATA IS COMPELLING.
Private school students perform better on standardized tests, go to college in higher numbers, and eventually earn more than their public school peers. Underlying this success—and the true gift of a private school education, according to area administrators— is the personalized attention from faculty who imbue students with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to succeed as learners and leaders. “Not only do we strive for academic excellence, but we teach our students to be virtuous leaders who recognize the many injustices in society and, through their personal witness, provide hope for a better world and build respect among all people,” says Marco J. Clark, president and CED of Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville. These abilities and perspectives come with a price tag. The average tuition for private day schools in Maryland was $22,283 for the 2010-11 school year, according to the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). “It is an investment in your child’s
future,” says Esther VanDeCruze Donawa, head of school at Maryland International Day School, a Spanish immersion school, in Oxon Hill. For many, that future includes college. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), graduation rates of 12th graders in private and public schools were 93.8 and 81.2 percent, respectively, in 2006-07 (the most recent data available) and four-year college attendance rates were 66.5 and 39.5 percent. Some area private schools—including The Beddow High School in Accokeek and Bishop McNamara—report 100 percent college attendance rates. A generally more well-rounded education, combined with higher SAT scores, make private school students attractive to colleges, agree administrators. NCES figures for the 2009-10 school year show students at private schools scored, on average, 35-59 points higher on critical reading, 23-72 points higher on math and 42-72 points higher on writing than those in public schools.
At Bishop McNamara, that not only means every student is college bound, but that most, including those from less affluent households, have numerous post-secondary options. “Our class of 2011, which had about 200 students, received offers worth $18 million in scholarships and financial aid,” says Patricia Garber, the school’s director of admissions. A private school education may translate into a higher salary after college, according to a 2006 report in the Journal of Economics and Economic Education Research. “Attendants of private schools earn wages which are 4.9% higher than wages of their public-school counterparts,” according to the study. “It is the individualized instruction that students receive from teachers who get to know them well that gives our kids a sound base and makes them eager learners,” says Donawa. “Our teachers work with them, play with them, interact with them and teach them.”

What makes private school teachers so effective, according to Donawa, is that they are considered by parents and administrators “to be an important part of the package and not the least common denominator. It’s not just students who develop relationships with teachers; our parents do, too. As a result, our teachers feel appreciated.” At Bishop McNamara, where 55 percent of the faculty has advanced degrees, “teachers are teaching kids who want to be here—that’s huge,” says Garber. “And while we’re an accredited school with a strong reputation, our teachers have an academic freedom….We have guidelines but there’s lots of room for creativity in the classroom.” Private schools tend to have a more unified educational philosophy that is embraced by faculty, say administrators. And, that philosophy can extend beyond academics. “In our Catholic Christian setting, students are imbued with values to serve the betterment of mankind,” says Michael Hunt, Bishop McNamara’s principal. “The focus on academics is approached with a purity of intent. Our teachers are not teaching to a test; we want our students to love the knowledge being imparted.” “A productive academic life excites you and urges you on to greater achievement,” says Trudy Beddow, founder and head of school at The Beddow High School. “We provide | SEE NEXT PAGE |

the proper environment and encourage participation and engagement….which results in a student who is articulate and can analyze and synthesize on his feet.”

Creating self-sufficient learners is a priority for private schools. “Our students develop an independence in the learning process,” says Donawa. “They learn how to start the process and then use the teacher as a facilitator. They are curious, motivated and enjoy learning, which makes them valuable in a school community.” The ability of private schools to more closely tailor the curriculum to individual students’ needs is another advantage, says Beddow. “If we have students who are not ever going to be science majors, we can be innovative and offer courses that engage them, such as scientific illustration or forensics rather than physics and chemistry,” she says. “The beauty of a place like McNamara is the fact that you can be an honors student in math and a college prep student in English and receive high-quality instruction in both that will challenge you,” says Garber. “We recognize strengths and accelerate students along the paths where they are strongest while still providing help in areas that need more attention.”

Despite the reputation of some prestigious private schools as being homogenous, most independent schools embrace diversity, say administrators. “Bishop McNamara is a diverse school with a wide range of students— racially, culturally and religiously,” says Jada Scott, a senior at the school. “We are a microcosm of the world outside,” says Donawa of Maryland International Day School. “Our teachers are from nine different parts of the globe. While most students are born in the U.S., their parents may have come from other countries. Our students are culturally aware.” And that, she adds, will serve them well “in our increasingly global society.”

Increased attention also reduces disciplinary problems, say administrators. “We’ve had kids come in with disciplinary problems but they don’t repeat [behaviors] here. We don’t community-build as a stated objective, but with a small group of students it’s automatic,” says Beddow. “It is a privilege to be here,” says Garber of Bishop McNamara. “It’s not as though you pay money and can do whatever you want. That said, should there be discipline issues, we first work with families to resolve them.”
