Geneva Centre for Security Policy Where knowledge meets experience
Fact Sheet
EMERGING SECURITY CHALLENGES PROGRAMME Head of Programme MAIN PURPOSE The programme tackles three ‘baskets’ of emerging issues: • Gauging the security implications of emerging technologies (including legal dimensions) • Identifying resource management challenges (e.g. relating to food security, water security) • Finding novel solutions to long standing transnational challenges such as arms proliferation, cyber vulnerabilities, and terrorism
PROGRAMME TOOLKIT To address these issues, the programme engages in three distinct yet complementary areas of work: • Education and training for government officials, diplomats, military officers, international civil servants, NGO staff, as well as for private sector representatives • Dialogue and outreach activities, including track 2 events • Policy-relevant research and analysis
HIGHLIGHTS FOR 2015 • Execution of the 16th New Issues in Security Course which has a special focus on human security, transnational global threats and regional security challenges • Actively contributing to the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) implementation process, specifically through the ATT Network and capacity-building courses • Providing opportunities for dialogue on states’ nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament commitments, in advance of the 2015 NPT Review Conference • Co-organising the Cyber 9/12 Student Challenge, a policy-centered student competition that explores how the international community should respond the day after a major cyber attack • Offering relevant, executive training opportunities on topics such as devising a national cyber security strategy and policy, foresight and strategic planning, and climate change
