Leadership in an Unstable Environment: Coping with Complexity The Annual Middle East and North Africa training course on new issues in security policy provides training and fosters capacity-building in nontraditional security challenges. The course addresses the important transition underway in Middle East and North Africa countries and the impact on the security challenges in the region.

Maarten Merkelbach Mr Merkelbach is a Senior Programme Advisor to the Leadership, Crisis and Conflict Management Programme at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy.

GCSP The Geneva Centre for Security Policy is an international foundation with 45 member states from across the globe that provides forwardthinking and innovative solutions for leaders and policymakers concerned with international affairs and security in today’s complex, globalised world.

Key benefits for you The course provides and intensive 5-day learning experience exploring new issues in security faced in the MENA region. The objective is to foster better understanding of the changing context of international security and the new challenges it poses for states.

Faculty profiles The teaching staff includes GCSP’s own international team composed of academics and practitioners with broad experience in security policy, diplomacy and/or military affairs, as well as high level guest speakers (government officials, military officers, representatives from international institutions, academics and researchers).


Why you should attend The Course is designed for mid-career diplomats and military officers from the Middle East and North Africa and from GCSP Foundation Council member states. Candidates from outside the region are those likely to be assigned to analysis and security policy functions at a bilateral or multilateral level in the MENA region.

Application deadline: Monday, 13 July 2015 Tuition fees: The seminar is offered free of charge. A limited number of scholarships will be available.

Course design

Support

In addition to interactive lectures and presentations, the participants will be exposed directly to practitioners engaged in various fields of international, regional and human security who will share their concrete experience with them. Each individual or panel presentation is followed by a discussion with the participants.

This course, which has been running since 2007, is funded by the Swiss Government and is conducted in cooperation with the Partnership for Peace.

Additional information The course will be conducted under the Chatham House Rule. During the week, the course participants will be meeting with Swiss parliamentarians in Bern.
