PREFACE Since 2000, Russ and I have been traveling the country, showing paintings at art festivals and placing them in the homes and offices of happy collectors. I simply can’t imagine a better way to spend our lives. I get to create. Russ paints now too; more on that later. And then we get to meet the people who want to bring our work into their homes and lives. It is both humbling and deeply satisfying. We often joke that our job is to make people happy. Presented in these pages are just of a few of the many settings where we’ve attempted to do just that. We want to acknowledge that while we wish we captured quality images in every beautiful home we’ve had the pleasure of visiting, sometimes the photos fell short. If you don’t see your painting and your home reflected in these pages, please know that we likely didn’t capture a photo that would do it justice. We appreciate each of you for making this book—and this life—possible. Warmly, Julie Keaten-Reed

STILL LIFES AND FLORALS There is something formal about a still life painting, perhaps because it conjures images of classic Renaissance or Impressionist paintings from textbooks. Or perhaps it’s because of the implicit artistry within the piece, the acknowledgment that a human hand assembled this particular set of objects in this specific way with the express purpose of delighting the viewer. A still life depicts a scene from close up, not a grand vista but rather an intimate connection with objects both human-made and natural. That intentional commingling elicits a response unique to still lifes. My still lifes are generally serene, quiet images—and yes, slightly formal. They settle the mind. The principles of Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, guide many of the compositions. Ikebana employs minimalism; it emphasizes shape,

line, form, and structure; it highlights humanity yet is practiced in silent meditation. When I follow those rules, I know my work will convey a satisfying harmony and balance. Invariably, I also incorporate into my still lifes the universal truth that people love color. We respond emotionally to color, and different colors evoke different emotions in different people. In the same way a note in music can make you feel soothed, awakened, melancholy, excited, cheerful, or inspired—so can a color elicit a response that varies from person to person. I have a theory that artists paint flowers as an excuse for vibrant colors. I don’t think we need an excuse, but I certainly accept the challenge to create something universally appealing yet open to interpretation.

BIRDS AND BUTTERFLIES While still life paintings have a long history in the Western art tradition, paintings of birds are a classic and well-loved genre in Asian art. Years ago, I was obsessed with painting water birds. I couldn’t get enough of their long and elegant lines, their poise and majesty. In more recent times, though, it has been the small birds who have captured my heart. Hummingbirds and house wrens, cardinals and chickadees, and always the little finches. Russ has remarked more than once that my little birds are often a bit rotund. It’s true. But really, how can you not fall in love with a cute, plump little bird? Butterflies carry layers of meanings, the ultimate transformation from the ordinary into the sublime. Like cherry blossoms, butterflies are reminders of both the exquisite beauty and impermanence of life. Their very movements look like a dance, as memorable as it is fleeting.

COLLABORATIONS In 2017 Russ and I started a collaboration on a new body of work. He had some ideas, and I had some ideas for painting in a way that diverged from my normal style. Our ideas clicked. I would paint an abstracted background, sometimes a simple color block, sometimes a Richter-esque impression of a landscape. Russ would then take over. He would put on his magnifying glasses and, with the tiniest of brushes, paint in detailed miniature the subject matter of the piece. The stark contrast between the loose and sometimes raw background with the exquisitely detailed focal point offers, we hope, a pleasing surprise.

JULIE KEATENREED FINE ART Art can defy the barriers that divide. By speaking to everyone uniquely and personally, it somehow manages to unite us. The most recognizable art transcends time and audience, not only because of its technical beauty -- but because of what it leaves to interpretation. National award-winning artist Julie Keaten-Reed has spent decades perfecting the idea of not forcing a conclusion in her paintings, but instead delivering a framework for the imagination. The result is crisp, clean and celebrated by a most diverse client base.
