To All Our Friends and Supporters of the Great Optimist Fishout, Patience, dedication, and optimism are just a few of the traits that will contribute to a well-rounded individual. It is our hope that we can pass these characteristics on to as many of our children as possible. Since 1983, the Cocoa Beach Optimist Club has been doing this at the Great Optimist Fishout. We are thankful to the many sponsors that have allowed this tradition to continue and we ask that you support the Fishout sponsors that are displayed in this book. It is due to their generosity that makes this event possible. Their contributions have allowed the Cocoa Beach Optimist Club to support various local causes and projects. We thank the sponsors and supporters for their donations and support, and we appreciate the generosity of the Brevard Business Community in support of the kids. Optimistically,
Joseph Knorr

The Fishout is a community event run by volunteers and who spend countless hours through the year to organize, manage, promote and run the event. It counts on the kind sponsorship of community businesses and patrons to provide the resources necessary to get the kids fishing.
In addition to bringing families and the community together, the Cocoa Beach Optimist Club would like to use the Fishout as a means of bringing awareness to the current and ongoing situation of our lagoons and rivers. A combination of both natural and manmade situations have contributed to brown tide and an alarmingly high number of dead fish. Children and families, please find the time to educate yourselves and one another about how you can be a part of the solution. You are never too young to learn how to respect your environment, and every voice counts. Let’s all do what we can to keep our water, our wildlife, and our ecosystems healthy.

THE OPTIMIST CREED Promise Yourself— To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

Fishing for Treasure 3. A dedicated crew of nearly 20 volunteers make this event a success every year. The amount of work it takes to coordinate an event for 400 plus children is monumental. From organizing food vendors to putting up and tearing down tents, this group goes above and beyond. Vice President Bud Campbell summed up his club’s dedication. “We have each other’s backs if we need something. You call each other. It doesn’t have to be Optimist related. That’s the camaraderie that’s built into this organization.”
Multiple Generations
D
eep in the waters of Port Canaveral is a $10,000 fish. This tagged fish is part of the Great Optimist Fishout and could mean $10,000 for a lucky Fishout participant if caught.
But the potential payout isn’t what brings generations back to Port Canaveral every April. It could even be argued that fishing isn’t the main draw. It’s really the people that make the Fishout a true treasure.
People Behind the Tournament The Great Optimist Fishout is a tradition that has allowed children
5-16 to attend a free catch-andrelease fishing competition for over 30 years. If you register, have a fishing pole, and a guardian attending you, you’re ready to fish. The Cocoa Beach Optimist Club and the Canaveral Port Authority offer children a chance to fish in the relative comfort and convenience of South Cruise Terminal
The club’s website states their motto as simply “Bringing out the best in kids,” and they’ve lived up to that for many years. The Beachside Resident’s very own author of Jedi Mind Tricks, Scooter Newell, has participated since childhood in the Fishout. Campbell noted, “Everyone’s kid (club member) is a runner. They’re all volunteers. Scooter Newell was [and is] a big help. My son (Eddie Campbell) wanted to do the tents. They grew up seeing what we do and they want to help out. It’s something you want to do and you feel that you need to do. But you don’t do it by yourself, you bring in

your friends. We love working together.” Many members have also been both participants and volunteers. Club Secretary Frank Dreyer, whose late father was a founder of the event, still faithfully supports the Fishout every year. Frank has fond memories of it as a child. “I won an award the first year for the strangest fish. It meant a lot to me.”
Community Supported Throughout the years, the Fishout has had many sponsors from the community. For two years now, Southeastern Honda of Palm Bay has generously served as the Title Sponsor of the Great Optimist

Fishout. Because of theirs and many other local businesses support, the Fishout has been kept free to the public. Without their contributions, this tradition would cease to exist. Bud’s met many current residents when they were just children, “They (former participants) come up to me when they’re adults.
I have people now who want to give back.” “Rhett Fischer (who runs Rusty’s Seafood & Oyster Bar) used to fish when he was a kid,” Fishout volunteer and club member Cliff Schmitt recalled. Fischer still supports the event to this day.
Nature Lessons These young fisherman sometimes struggle to get their first fish on the hook. After one is caught, it’s a quick weigh-in then it’s back in the water for the fish and back to work for the young outdoorsmen. Bud Campbell added, “They say you can’t get fish in the port, but every year we have over 300 kids catch 400-500 fish.” Throughout the day, it’s common for families to see turtles, eels, manatees and stingrays. Sometimes even baby Continues on Page 16

Optimists Year Round
he Great Optimist Fishout is only one of the many ways that the Cocoa Beach Optimist Club (CBOC) gives back to the youths of our community.
All throughout the year, Club members volunteer their time, effort, and energy to various events and causes that contribute to bettering children everywhere. Below are examples of some of the other things that the Cocoa Beach Optimist Club does to bring out the best in kids.
Crosswinds Youth Services The CBOC has partnered with Crosswind Youth Services and to provide support for the kids with monetary donations and in-kind support.

MILA Christmas Party
The CBOC is the prime sponsor of the President’s Day Contest in February at the Cocoa Beach Skate Park. Kids in several age groups are judged for their proficiency at riding skateboards and performing tricks.
The CBOC has sponsored the MILA Christmas Party for mentally & physically handicapped children for over 20 years, supplying funds to provide gifts for every child.
JOE KNORR
Other than the financial support, the most important thing the Optimist Club does is show children how to give back through an organization The kids see the product of our work, whether it be at the Fishout or schools or Thanksgiving baskets. I believe it’s a big thing to show our youth today the organizations that they can be involved with at an early age, and they can give back just by giving some of their time.

I came into the Club as a supporter, doing and working. Especially through the Optimist International Junior Golf tournament. Over twenty years I saw many kids from ages six to 18, and every year interacted with them and watched how they learned and how they grow. I gained more respect for the sport, and watched camaraderie grow amongst the kids themselves. The Club attracts kids of all levels and ethnicities. It’s a great feeling to know what we’ve touched as many lives as we have.

Odyssey of the Mind Team at Roosevelt Elementary
In 2012, the CBOC started sponsoring the Roosevelt Odyssey of the Mind Team, helping them to reach the World Finals.
Lassie League The CBOC proudly supports the Lassie League, which allows girls from throughout the county ages nine to 16 to play softball. Their ultimate goal is to form a county-wide league.
Project Hunger The CBOC helps to fund Project Hunger, which collects food to make boxed meals to distribute to needy families.

I enthusiastically support all of the philanthropic activities of the Cocoa Beach Optimist Club. I personally have the honor of chairing the annual Essay and Oratorical Contests. These contests encourage our young people to think creatively, express thoughts in writing, follow strict contest rules, compete with peers and stretch out of their comfort zones. Both writing and public speaking skills are essential ingredients in one’s personal and professional life. Both contests are springboards to higher levels of involvement and achievement. Through participation our young students build self confidence, self esteem and recognize the rewards of competing on a high level.
”
I like to watch children as they respond to the different support we give them and to take in and actually learning by doing the projects that we do. The contests, speeches and essays helps them to improve because it makes them stop and think. It shows them how to compete under friendly terms.
”
Bingo! Year round, the CBOC sponsors Ginny’s Rockledge Bingo, which generates most of the money for their philonthropic efforts. They wish to thank all the bingo players who attend regularly on Friday nights and Saturday afternoons

There’s magic in catching your first fish. For a number of children attending it’s the first time they’ve held a fishing pole.
Fishout participants often remark how much they cherish the time at the Fishout. Cliff Schmitt explained it best. “It’s family that makes it so successful. Family has to be there. You can’t just drop them off and say ‘good-bye Johnny’ and go. Their family has to bring him, they have to sit with him and be involved.” Children grow up, but great fishing stories remain. It’s these memories of togetherness they’ll treasure for a lifetime.
President Joe Knorr joked, “They don’t want to touch the bait.” Bud Campbell shared a story, “I remember this one little girl. She was tiny. She fought this fish for 30 minutes. She walked up to my son Eddie to weigh in. She had a big smile, huge eyes and a tiny fish about four

Cliff Schmitt added, “That’s what we go for. Those kind of moments.”
