We also catch up with our favourite indie-rockers DOGS; speaking to Johnny Cooke about the recent happenings in the band, as well as bringing you an exclusive competition to bag some very special DOGS merchandise for yourself! REVIEW

Autumn Few With rehearsals starting in autumn 2009, the band had immediately stumbled upon brand new material and a complete change in direction from where they had originally emerged from. This saw Sean (Hardy) reverting back to a front man role, while Chris Weeks was called in for bass duties and Andy Hucksted remained the back bone by supplying a rootsy click to these new foundations. “It was nice to start a new band but already know all the members from previous events, I think this is why the song writing came so easily to us” explains Sean. Within a few months the band were being offered support slots with established acts and decided to act upon one of these offers by playing with DOGS at the Quaterhouse in Folkestone. This saw the band instantly widen their fan base as diehard fans began to realise what Autumn Few were standing for. “That gig changed everything for us, we had done a few warm up shows before but were basically still trying to find our feet – by the time we reached the Quaterhouse we were so ready for it! It all started from there for us” The band then took to the studio to embark on the recording of their debut EP, and fans were invited to send pictures to be included within the EP Artwork. “We thought it would be nice to involve the people that were actually downloading our material, at least this way they are part of the process – I think it helps them see how much they mean to the band – music isn’t just a product on the shelf to the real

bands out there, it’ a product of themselves – a way of packaging your soul for public consumption – it’s all bonkers really but we love it!” The EP is now available to download for free and studio time for the end of the year has already been secured, just keep an eye on the official website: www.autumnfew.com

Memories of the 80s I thought that I would share my passion for every thing 80s, from fashion which included skinny jeans and jumpsuits to films such as Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal. We have to admit however old we are, the 80s was a time where some of us were at our happiest and to be honest you could wear what the hell you liked and listened to male bands that wore makeup without being judged like we are today. The 80s was an era in which you could truly express yourself without looking weird and not everything had to match. My favourite thing about the 80s wasn’t just the music but the films that were released. My fondest memory would be me and my brothers all sitting around a tiny TV watching Labyrinth. It has to be still to this day, my favourite film of all time, along with Willow, The Dark Crystal and Legend, all equally cheesy but fun to watch none the less. I actually have a habit when I am feeling a little bit low or need a boost to put on Labyrinth, it takes me back and I appreciate it every time I watch it and I kid you not, I think I may have watched it about a thousand and one times!

The obvious contender in this 80s article would be the music, Chaka Khan, The Clash and Blondie are just a handful of what the 80s had to offer us. Everywhere we look is memorabilia from the 80s even our fashion trend has dipped into that colourful era. Jumpsuits, The Preppie look and ankle socks are rocking their way back to our high street shops and even the huge branded music labels are joining the band wagon. Ministry of Sound have released an album called ‘80s Groove’ which I might add is a definite must if you want to dance around your living room like a madman. So what is the fascination with the 80s again? We all know that history literally repeats itself in fashion and music but the 80s has always been the one that rears its head more than others. I have a theory; the 80s was by far the best time of my life. I had no worries, the music was infectious

and I associate my happy memories with many 80s songs and fabulous 80s films. I remember wearing jean jackets and printed t-shirts and I don’t think I will ever get tired of leggings, oversized t-s and pumps. Bold prints, floral miniskirts and lace are just some of the punk 80s styles that are gracing our shops but something tells me there’s more, we haven’t even scratched the service of 80s fashion. I’m just waiting for some fab young band to start up the 80s electro music scene again and we’ll be well away. Ark at me, I sound like a 80s throwback! I asked some music fans what they thought of the 80s and this is what they had to say:

Don – Shop owner “Do you know every time I hear ‘I want to know what love is’ by Foreigner actually brings tears to my eyes as I think how I was such a free spirited kid. Oh and I had the BIGGEST crush on Nik Kershaw, I think that it was all that hair.” 80s tunes jog those memories that are comforting and some songs literally whisk you back to that time you sat as a kid and first listened to it. 80s has a powerful nostalgia attached and I for one love sticking my ipod on and listening to back to back 80s music, it makes me smile and feel thankful that music has that power. Sad I know but I would give anything to go back to the 80s, an era that was full of colour, wardrobe mistakes was unheard of and there was a sense of freedom. 80s rocks!

Maxine – Admin Assistant “I love the 80s, I was an 80s baby and when an 80s song comes on I think about my childhood and how happy I was. Luther Vandross was a favourite of mine, Never too much. Now that you mention 80s music I am going home and tuning into Heart to dance around my flat.” Paul – Sales Assistant “I don’t really like 80s music but I must admit that I do know most of the words when a well known song comes on and if I have one too many bevies you may just catch me tapping my foot in a pub.” Sammy – Makeup Artist “80s music is an inspiration to me. Fabulous false eye lashes, iridescent colours and big hair are all 80s throw backs but they work. Madonna, Dead or Alive and my fave Bonnie Tyler are all undeniable iconic 80s starlets. Floral dresses, oversized off the shoulder t-s and who can forget the huge beads and bangles. 80s will never get boring, it’s here to stay.”

NOt to be missed

WORDS BY JEZZ SILCOCK Jez catches up with 20% of Panic Cell, namely Thanet based guys Luke (vocals) and Naf (guitars) for a quick chat (and a beer) about life, love, covers and all the things in between... Hey guys, great catching up with you again. So what are you doing right now? Naf: “Night in tonight... got some friends coming over in a minute for take away and holiday discussions!” Luke: “I’m recovering from a night in the studio with Skindred, watching them record some killer new tracks for their next album.”

Naf: “That was so much fun! It took a while to work out which of the songs would work out acoustically but the set went down really well... so well in fact that the lovely people at Jagermeister offered to pay for us to record an acoustic EP... plans for that are being made as we speak!” Luke: “The acoustic set was immense. We were shocked with how well it was received, having never done one before. With Jagermeisters help, we should have the EP done later in the year! Jager helps with everything!”

You recently covered Seal’s “Crazy”, whose idea was it to cover that song? Naf: “The original idea for that song came from Bobby, and it threw us all a bit to begin with but we stuck with it. The day Luke added the vocal was the day we knew we had something special.” Luke: “I was really, really unsure about it at first. Seal and I don’t share similar vocal qualities after all!! But we gave it a try and it worked, probably better than any of us expected.”

Your 3rd album “Fire It Up” came out in April to some amazing reviews. How pleased are you with it? Luke: “Very pleased because the album is probably the closest to what we have been trying to achieve these past 6 years. Its definitely what I would say is the most “us” sounding album.. I know it sounds silly, they all sound like us, it is us after all!! But this album captures our sound and style the best.” Naf: “Well, I wasn’t there for the writing and recording of it... I joined shortly after it was completed, but I really enjoy playing the songs from that album. Personally I think it’s the best sounding PC album.”

You have recently supported Metallica, Alice Cooper, Slayer, Alice In Chains and Papa Roach. Living the dream surely eh? Luke: “Definitely living the dream! The list of bands we have supported and played shows with this summer is insane; a who’s who of metal and rock. I consider us very lucky to be amongst these guys.. it’s been a good year so far.”

Thanks guys, finally, anything you want to plug? Luke: “Our drummer’s (Rob) extremely smelly backside when we are on tour? Ha, the imminent Crazy single release on itunes and the acoustic EP! Check ‘em out people....but not the ass!”

And Nigel Kennedy in Poland? Naf: “Yeah, Nigel was the dream come true for me.... (laughs). No really, we’ve been very lucky to play with the bands that got us into the music in the first place. Managed to meet Lars from Metallica but still haven’t managed to meet James, who’s a bit of a hero of mine.”

You played an extra acoustic set at Download this year which I heard worked really well. Any plans to record an acoustic EP?

INTERVIEW

the gallows WORDS BY JEZ SILCOCK With Gallows set to rip up the stage when they headline Hevy Festival - Kent’s alternative hardcore gathering, I caught up with their drummer Mr Lee Barratt to discuss all things Gallow-ish... Hey Lee, so what are you doing right now? “I’m pretty busy at the moment trying to sort out arrangements for the Warrior’s Dance festival on Saturday and setting up my column that I’ll be writing for RockSound soon about comics.” Gallows formed in 2005, was this your first band? “No, I’d been in about half a dozen bands before with varying degrees of ‘success’. The closest I ever thought I’d got to making it with one of them was when we flew out to Malta to play a festival. We got there and I think there was probably about 50 people at the show! The promoter couldn’t pay us and we lost about £1500 on flights. Bad times. Luckily things with Gallows have been smoother than that!” Frank getting a tattoo live on-stage - is that the craziest thing you guys have done? “It’s up there! I honestly don’t remember too much about that, I was so concentrated on playing a good show because it was the first year we’d done Reading & Leeds!” You’ve recently supported Rage Against The Machine and Cypress Hill, and are playing with the Prodigy at Milton Keynes soon, has it all really sunk in yet? “In a way it has because we’ve played the shows and they were very successful but I think it will really sink in when we’ve taken a break from the band for a while and sat down to reflect on what we’ve achieved.

12 | The Gig Guide | September - October

The best thing about all those shows is that the bands themselves asked us to play them, it wasn’t like our agent fought with a hundred other bands to get us on the shows. It’s a great feeling to know that your musical idols like Tom Morello and Zach de la Rocha like your music enough to ask you to play with them.” Apparently Zach De La Rocha kicked your ass at table tennis, what would you challenge him to, to even up the score? “Haha, he really did. He played it cool and then totally wiped the floor with me. I’d like to play him at Fussball to see how good he is at that. Or maybe some Rock Band?!” I take it you are looking forward to headlining Hevy, any other bands playing that you wanna check out? “Yeah, definitely! I think it’s one of the best festival line ups in the UK this Summer and I’m really proud we’re headlining the Saturday night. I’ll definitely be checking out all the bands on the main stage because it rules and they’re all friends with us anyway! I want to see Cerebral Ballzy too because I’ve heard a lot about them.” I love the drive of ‘Abandon Ship’ and the way the crowd go nuts when you play it, what’s your favourite Gallows tune to play? “It’s funny you should say that because ‘Abandon Ship’ is the first song we ever wrote! Sometimes finding the drive to play it can be tough haha. My favourite song to play is probably ‘I Dread The Night’ or ‘The Riverbed’.” If you had to form a super group, who would be in it and why? “Good question... I’d definitely like David Bowie on vocals with Dave Grohl on drums. Maybe Tom Morello on guitar? God knows how that would sound!”

seem to just be plagiarising other trends to get big quickly and then disappear again. That’s not exciting, that’s dogpoo! Steph was really ill at the end of last year, I take it he’s now back with a vengeance? “Yeah he’s been back on top form for a while now. Him getting sick at the end of last year was just a culmination of us being on the road for so long in some pretty harsh conditions. We jumped from a US tour in a van where we were doing 8 hour drives every day, in to a UK tour in a van where it was freezing and snowing most days. It really took it’s toll on everyone but Steph the most obviously.” Is it true you are a bit of a comic geek too, or is geek being a bit harsh? “Maybe a little harsh, I’m not an expert by any means! I do love comics though. It started off as being a bit of a hobby and I only used to read Batman comics but now I guess I’ve really got in to it and I’m always on the look out for new titles.”

What’s the most embarrassing song on your ipod? “Hahaha, I was going to say that I don’t have any but I just looked at my iTunes and ‘Blue’ by Eiffel 65 has got to be a contender. I have some very bad 90s dance compilations on there...” You have previously been described as “the world’s most exciting new band”, which band would you choose for this title? “I don’t think I listen to enough new bands to hand out that accolade. A lot of new bands these days

So what’s next for Gallows, new album, tours, MBE’s etc? “We’re going to finish off this run of UK and European shows and then take a break for a couple of months before doing another DIY UK tour in late November. We’re hopefully going to be releasing a DVD soon too.” My thanks to Lee for taking the time to chat to me and don’t forget to check Gallows headlining Hevy on the Saturday and Glassjaw on the Sunday.... Good times!

REVIEW

WORDS BY JEZ SILCOCK PHOTOS BY MARK CORNWELL The guys at Sound Island Festival are obviously doing something right! Two days of chart topping bands from the past to the present, a well organised and safe environment for both adults and kids, they even arranged for two days of glorious sunshine.....and all in the beautiful surroundings of Quex Park, Birchington. Saturday was MY day and what a day it was....with performances from The King Blues, The Blockheads, Lightning Seeds and ska/2 tone legends Madness. So armed with my AAA passes, I got to check out the bands from both sides of the barrier. The King Blues are really making a name for themselves at the moment with their fusion of ska. folk rock and hardcore punk and their live set pulled no punches. This was the band that I was looking forward to seeing the most and it was easy to see (and hear) why these guys are going places! Catching up backstage with Itch (vocals) and Jack (drums) after their set, it’s clear that they are top guys too!

cherry picker hundreds of feet in the air!). Finally the act every fez wearing rude boy had come to see, ska legends Madness hit the stage and it was definitely time for a nutty party. The crowd absolutely lapped up their set and general nuttiness (I think Kix was climbing up the side of the stage at one point) and Quex Park was filled with 12,000 dancing mental, but well behaved lunatics!! These guys have got a vast array of hits which are guaranteed to get the crowd going such as ‘One Step Beyond’, ‘Embarrassment’ and ‘Baggy Trousers’ (bang on the head with a plastic cup) and brought the night to an epic close.... ‘Sex & Drugs & Rock ‘n’ Roll’, now that’s not a bad opening song! The Blockheads belted out, yes belted out some of their much loved tunes and to watch them live, you would think they were just starting out, such was the passion that they were playing with. Bass player Norman Watt-Roy just stole the stage for me, what a legend!! The Lightning Seeds had some tough acts to follow and although they played excellently, I think the crowd were just baying for their headliner by this point. Highlights of their set were the tunes “Lucky You” and “Marvellous”, delivered impeccably by Mr Ian Broudie (oh and watching the crowd from a

Met some great people, listened to and saw some legendary bands, drunk some reasonably priced booze and staggered off into the night.... Sunday was always going to be about JLS and Quex Park was filled with screaming girls (and some boys) all eager to see their idols. Main supports came from Diana Vickers and Chipmunk, who both served to whip up the audience with their pop tunage and, if you like that type of music, you would have enjoyed it..... and judging by the crowd noise, they certainly did! Check out The King Blues when they play Hevy Festival (on Sunday) – a proper band playing great music and not a backing track in sight!

COVER STORY

WORDS & PHOTOS BY STUART KEELER From the 14th – 17th July, Rochester Castle once again saw it’s grounds play host to a plethora of top musical acts as part of the annual Castle Concerts events. Starting with Rochester favourites and all time legends Status Quo on Wednesday, the festival continues with Will Young, who wooed the crowd on the Thursday, before The Saturdays took to the stage on Friday and finally, the entertainment climaxed with the customary Castle Proms on Saturday 17th. I went along (at somewhat late notice!) to the Friday evening event which saw The Saturdays in headline position with a variety of support acts also on the bill. The castle itself makes a natural setting for a musical concert, with it’s 12th Century stone walls providing the perfect perimeter to house an enthusiastic crowd. This natural defence also makes the whole site feel a lot more relaxed, without having the eyesore of ugly metal fencing within sight during the evening festivities. The crowd was somewhat divided into two specific areas... those that wished to get up close with the action and stood

at the front, and then there were those that were relaxing under the summers evening, sitting on the provided chairs or even going one step further and enjoying a picnic complete with rugs, hamper and camping chairs as well. With the sun shining strong all evening, the setting couldn’t have been more relaxed with the setting sun providing the perfect backdrop for the concert. First to the stage were relative newcomers and hot music property; The Wanted, introduced with style by the confident MC. This group of five guys form the latest in ‘boybands’ and are part of the same management as The Saturdays so it comes as no surprise then that their music is fresh, funky, bold and catchy... equivalent to a male version of the Saturdays! Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Tom Parker, Nathan Sykes and James McGuiness each have their own looks and personalities, each appealing to a differing supporter and providing different aspects on the vocals, whilst still harmonising well together. With everything covered, the future looks promising for these lads and their single ‘All Time Low’ is a strong contender for hit status. As The Wanted left the stage, the brief interval gave everyone a chance to sample the many varying refreshments available around the outside edge of the site. As well as the obligatory bars serving alcoholic beverages and the hot food stalls selling burgers, there were also ice cream vans and hot doughnuts to be enjoyed.

18 | The Gig Guide | September - October

Next to take to the stage was James Christian Charters, better known throughout the world as DJ Ironik, who came fresh from a stint on the white isle of Ibiza. Being the only solo star of the evening and taking over a stage previously populated by five lively characters, you would be forgiven for thinking that Ironik had a lot to live up to. However, opening with his unique version of Tiny Dancer, the crowd (of which most were probably not overly aware of Elton John’s original!) immediately responded with cheers and the rapper soon had everyone singing along as he paced energetically around the vast stage. Keeping the pace prompt, he quickly followed up with his other hits such as ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’ and ‘Stay With Me’, but still leaving the crowd wanting more as he exited stage right. Interval 2 brought the chance to test out the onsite toilet facilities and I’m pleased to report that

unlike most portable facilities at other festivals, the ones provided at Castle Concerts were more than adequate, perhaps even going as far as saying they were luxurious. I was also pleased to see a number of stewards present around the grounds who were very helpful and also knowledgeable about the event itself... something that is actually not as common as you might think! Not content with just two apt and well placed support acts, there was yet one more to appear before the event headliners took to the stage. This time though, the crowd were treated to something a little bit different in the form of talented dance artists Diversity. As well as performing their well known acrobatic routine that had made them famous as winners of Britain’s Got Talent, the group also treated to some new material which fitted seamlessly into the set and had obviously been very well rehearsed so as to perform without falter.

Their famous and well executed Michael Jackson routine was made even more befitting as a tribute to the anniversary of his death around this time just last year. During Diversity’s entire show, an unusual silence fell over the audience as they watched in awe of the theatrics on stage, being broken only occasionally by some well placed applause. As an act that appeal to people of all ages and abilities, they went down extremely well with the crowd and left all with a buzz that would carry them through the final interval until The Saturdays were to grace the stage as the final act of the evening. Exploding on to the Stage with pizzazz and an aura of confidence, the carefully coordinated females that make up the successful pop group looked every

bit ready to entertain and prove they deserve to be at the top of the bill. Forming a line and facing the back of the stage towards their live backing band who were playing the intro to their smash hit ‘Work’, the group turned their heads to look over their shoulders as it was time for the lyrics to be sung. Giving it their all, the girls then broke out of formation but retained the heady confidence as they paced towards the front of the stage, powering out the lyrics whilst the excited onlookers joined them in song. The whole set was littered with the numerous hits they have to their name and each and every song had the crowd enthralled, which had now swelled to an enormous gathering! The very pronounced dance routine for ‘Up’ also had many a follower copying along, sending hundreds of hands up in unison with each beat. From all who attended, it was clear that the event was a success both in terms of the acts chosen to populate the line-up and the overall use of Rochester Castle as a venue for outdoor live music. Having been a success for a few years now, it will be interesting to see who will be chosen to headline next year’s events, which will again take place in July.

Mixing mainstream rock with pop, any fans of New Found Glory or The Foo Fighters will be right at home. Full of catchy and driving guitar riffs that instantly draw you in and never let go. ‘Your Hideaway’ was my personal favourite, with cracking guitar riff and memorable lyrics, this is what its all about. Its very exciting to listen to a new band who make music this good. Hope to hear a lot more in the future.

Gig Guide Verdict

Band: White Bone Rattle Title: White Bone Rattle Format: EP

Gig Guide Verdict

22 | The Gig Guide | September - October

Kent 4 four piece White Bone Rattle well and truly rock it up with this EP. Anyone with a love for AC/DC, Black Sabbath or heavy metal will find plenty to love with opening track ‘Glass Eye’. Second track ‘The Ferryman’ is a much more mellow affair that evokes memories of early Joy Division whilst the third - ‘Beloved’, is full of cracking, crunchy distortion and riffs that will deserve stadiums and thousands of screaming fans. I have only one complaint really, its only an EP!. I want to hear more!

Band: Ben Mills Title: Freedom Format: Album Finishing highly on a reality music show is a bit like flipping a coin. Heads, you get Leona Lewis and you end up breaking the record for the fastest selling single in chart history, Tails, you get Leon Jackson and, well, enough said. It was clear to see that 2007’s 3rd place finisher Ben Mills was incredibly talented and it should have all happened for him. Unfortunately, music being music, talent doesn’t always equal the success it deserves and he dropped off the radar for a few years. But he’s back again and sounding better than ever.

Gig Guide Verdict

Full of power ballads with a Joe Cocker like vocal snarl, tracks ‘Freedom’ and ‘Over The Rainbow’ stood out for me and great songs fall into each other so effortlessly, full of memorable lyrics, including a stab at X factors ideals on ‘Fade Away’; “Music’s for the soul, not some karaoke show” damn right it is Ben!. A brilliant album and I hope it all happens for Ben, he well and truly deserves it.

Band: Archie Wahwahs Title: Rubber Knecker Format: EP A couple of months ago I reviewed Archie Wahwahs 1st EP so I was delighted when a 2nd EP by them turned up for me to listen to. It’s more of the same lovely syncopated rhythms and intricately placed guitar riffs that bring to mind Toots and The Maytals or from more recent times, Less Than Jake. Insanely catchy from the first note to the last note, second track ‘The Shovel’ was my personal favourite and one of the best songs I’ve heard this year! Archie Wahwahs are well and truly in their comforte zone and a full length album can’t be too far away.

INTERVIEW

BY JOE FENDT A lot has happened since we last spoke nearly a year ago now. How are all things DOGS? “Very well thanks, rocking.” You’ve recently been working hard on a project called Pledge to raise money for the long awaited EP ‘We are the DOGS’. Can you tell us some more about pledge? “They are basically an online platform that connects bands with their fans. The bands then appeal to the fans to pledge money for a record that is yet to be made. This raises the cash to enable the bands to go and record, manufacture, distribute and promote their music. The fans are eventually rewarded with the record hot off the press. That’s the essence of it. When I first heard of the idea I thought it’d never work but we caned it, thanks to our unbelievable fans we raised the money in no time and made a record which we are very proud of.” I heard you donated part of The Pledge proceeds to charity; this is an awesome thing to do. Are the charities your involved with very close to your heart? “Yes very close indeed. Firstly Macmillan Cancer

Support I have known since I was a kid, the nurses there are angels, that sort of altruism and kindness bewilders me. The same goes for Animals Asia Foundation. They are super heroes on the side of the voiceless. It is one thing to consider the natural world in all it’s fight or flight anxiety and suffering, but to actively pluck animals from that world, to subjugate, torture, cripple, madden, mock and murder those animals in the name of superstition and monetary gain is lowering yourself to a grade far less than animal no matter how ignorant or skint you are. It appals me how us bloated bald apes feel we have the right to enslave and abuse anything that cannot complain. And often things that can.” You put on a gig dedicating the success of Pledge and releasing the EP to your fans. Someone who attended the gig said how they loved it, going onto say they really felt part of it and was touched to see their name come up on the projector screen. Have you got anything to say to your fans? “Nope.” The EP was recorded at the Famous Sawmills Studio where you have recorded previously. What was it like returning there - did fond memories come rushing back? “Yes, but we were more concerned with making new ones. It’s a wonderful place to be.” For those who haven’t heard the EP yet what can they expect? “It’s moody.” Before deciding on the final track listings for the EP you teased your fans with quite a lot of other new material that didn’t make the CD. When can

24 | The Gig Guide | September - October

they expect to get their hands on it? “We’re hoping to demo up a bunch of songs live in rehearsals and maybe some acoustically too, then we may release some free downloads to our lovely followers. We’re always writing and it’s hard to keep on top of all the tunes in the cupboard so we’re up for a clean out soon.”

and give it away on line before the band has released. We wouldn’t scatter their wages about town. Why stick their noses in, what does it do for them? It’s a hard slog carving out a record from start to finish and we don’t do it out of some glowing Christian benevolence (if that actually exists).”

The E.P has been released on your own label Moths, what was the reason behind this? “Coz we own it and every decision that it makes. And coz the logo is ace.”

What are your views on reality TV shows like X-factor? Do you think they have a positive or negative effect on the music scene? “Negative. Apart from the initial laughter we’re treated to in the auditions round, which slowly but inevitably turns to shame at the humiliation of the mentally retarded.”

We are the DOGS EP has been heard across the radio waves. What sort of response is it getting? “Amazing. It was just a teaser release with no big team behind it to pave the way for the album but it was picked up by radio stations around the country. It’s more than we hoped for at this time.” Your new EP is available for digital download is this the way forward or do you think people still prefer the hard copy in there hand? “Both. But we hate those w*****s who burn music

We have heard a rumour drummer Paul does a mean Beat Box version of a famous 80’s TV programme. Where can we hear it and does anyone else have any other hidden talents? “It’s true. It’s a falsetto beat box of the Knight Rider theme, you’ve never heard the like! I can turn my left leg inside-out and Kev does an awesome Arnie.”

INTERVIEW It’s been noticed that Johnny’s voice has evolved with each album and that Rikki’s guitar style has really matured what do you put this down too? “Evolution and Maturity.” The last time we spoke Kev had just joined the band and was just settling in. Is he one of the boys now? “No, he’s a $%&#£.” Duncan always seems so laid back. Does anything ever annoy him? “He’s always annoyed, it’s a mask, he’s fuming under there.” What do DOGS request on a rider? “Tea and Plums.” After the success of the EP what can we now expect for the future? “We’re finishing writing the new album and it’s going to be quite different and very, very special. We’re booking a bunch of gigs for the Autumn.”

I heard you had a really good merch seller at your York gig and sales boomed.. Will you be employing him again? “Very doubtful.”

FEATURE

Football Jazz WORDS BY MICHAEL LAKE Jazz and football – you what ? Apologies if this article appears a bit self indulgent and tenuous but I have just sat through England’s shambolic World Cup exit and am in need of doing something cathartic that doesn’t involve the taking of illegal substances. I have also been too depressed since to venture out and watch a jazz band and will be invoicing the Football Association for the costs of any future therapy and the loss of the will to live. Subsequently I have been cheered by a night out to the Borderline Club, near Charing Cross, to watch an excellent Texas based, punk influenced garage band aka Strange Boys. Front man Ryan Sambal sounds a bit like Dylan through a voice distorter but don’t let that put you off. Go and check out their latest album “Be Brave”. It’s everything Team England isn’t, cohesive, creative and understated. They also do an excellent live version of ‘Son of a Preacher man’. Over the years in the pursuit of a creative side I have read a lot of those out of the box, blue sky thinking books written by the likes of Tony Buzan and Edward De Bono. One of the much vaunted techniques used to develop ideas is word association. Basically you write down the topic word

and a random word and see what associations you can make in the hope that it sparks an idea. It’s a bit Freudian and subliminal and I suspect used a lot by Vic and Bob in Shooting Stars, maybe. Anyhow, I decided to appropriate this technique for this article and wrote down “jazz” and “football”. And this was what I came up with; “No structure, directionless drivel ” – no doubt a subconscious reference to Capello’s incomprehensible tactics and a brand of jazz known as free form which is simply b*******s and in every case less melodic than a swarm of vuvuzelas. Watching England was like listening to eleven instrumentalists playing the wrong parts, to a different song, conducted by a tone deaf and out of time conductor, only worse. “Newcastle United trumpet player” - I remember watching a footie programme featuring Nolberto Solano commonly known as “Nobby” or “Ñol” who played for the Geordies in the 90’s and was a renowned trumpet player. He actually played in a salsa band called the “The Geordie Latinos”. It is such a shame for music that he didn’t get it together with fellow Geordie legends Chris Waddle, collaborator in that classic tune “Diamond lights” and Gazza, implicated in the “Fog on the Tyne” massacre. “Emile Heskey” - watching Heskey play is like listening to a double bass played badly. There are many gifted black footballers unfortunately Emile isn’t one of them. Why does he play in builders shoes? You have to hand it to him though he quickly

30 | The Gig Guide | September - October

got over a bad World Cup, dusted himself down, threw on a dress and won Wimbledon! I have just heard on Sky that Heskey has announced his retirement from international football. In the poetic words of a now well known Leornard Cohen song “Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah”. “Ridiculous behaviour” - history shows that the Kings of Jazz such as Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Chet Baker, and Theolonious Monk got their rocks off long before rock’ n roll, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and football celebrity were invented. These jazz legends could party with the best and needed little encouragement to voyage into outer mental space. Charlie Parker was a notorious womaniser and depressive who tried to take his own life on a number of occasions. Chet Baker (the Becks of jazz), had his front teeth knocked out in a revenge attack for non payment of drug debts. Monk could have been born in Barking and Davis was a misogynist heroine addict. I tend to think

that Parker and co can be forgiven for their genius. Mad bad boy behaviour seems to have a synergy with uber creativity or maybe genius is simply a fatal attraction. And that’s why it is hard to take the likes of Terry, Cole and Rooney seriously. Lot’s of dubious behaviour on many levels but not a trace of brilliance to be seen amongst them. That said I would allow Zidane, Cantona and most recently Paul Gasgoine into the Hall of Fame for Flawed Footballing Genius. Just when you think that football celebrity has reached the top of the ludicrous behaviour scale along comes Gazza armed with a fishing rod, chicken and dressing gown claiming to be a friend and the saviour of Raoul Moat. So I didn’t actually come up with much but what I have realised is that while I may be suffering with ‘Post World Cup Stress Disorder’ I am still some way from nuts. Cheers Fabio!
