Welcome to The Glasgow School of Art Open House

Attending Open House is a great way to meet staff and students at the School so make sure you take every opportunity to ask questions and talk to as many people as possible. The programme has been designed to allow for plenty of discussion and to give you the space to find out more about our programmes and disciplines. Through Open House, we hope you’ll get a feel for what studying in a creative environment like the GSA might offer you and what it’s like to live in the creative and vibrant city of Glasgow.

Bookable Events

Unless stated, there is no need to have booked on to specific events in order to attend them. Bookable events are highlighted in pink in the programme. If you have not booked but would like to attend on the day, please speak to a member of staff or Student Ambassador in the main foyer of the Reid Building.

Explore Glasgow

Whilst you’re here, we also encourage you to get out and explore the city, which is packed full of great places to visit and get to know including some incredible galleries, museums and creative spaces. Whilst you’re here, check out our GSA Guide to Glasgow and the graduate-run Glasgow Art Map, which are both full of tips for nice places to visit around different parts of the city. Scan the QR code for our Guide to Glasgow and pick up a copy of the Art Map in the main foyer of the Reid Building.

From the GSA, you can take the bus to the South Side of the city and explore Queens Park and the cafes, bars and restaurants around Victoria Road and Pollokshaws Road. Or why not walk from Garnethill or hop on the subway at Cowcaddens to Glasgow’s famous West End, a popular spot for students and home to the famous Kelvingrove Art Gallery.

Curated by the students and staff of Communication Design in collaboration with our GSA Exhibitions department, check out our exhibition of work by first year students. The exhibition is of a photographic series of pin-hole photography, curated from the outcomes of a first-year project exploring the medium. Pinhole photography is a DIY photography method which allows the photographer to build their own camera and expose their own photograph within a single chamber.

Come view a display of drawings by Year 1 Textile Design students from their first few weeks at the GSA.

Join our Student Ambassadors for a tour of the Reid and Haldane Buildings where you can visit our studios and workshops. The Reid Building is home to the School of Design and features a range of specialist workshops and studio spaces. The Haldane is home to the School of Innovation and Technology’s BDes Product Design programme.

A VR headset will be available for you to view 3D digital models.

Drop into the Silversmithing and Jewellery studios for a presentation of student work. You’ll also be able to tour the studios and workshops and chat to staff and technicians.

This exhibition will feature a display of garments that reimagine the classic white shirt by our Year 1 students.

Join Programme Leader Steve Rigley for a presentation on the Communication Design programme. During the talk you’ll see examples of recent briefs and student work. The talk will introduce you to key elements of the Communication Design programme, and you’ll have the chance to ask questions. The talk will be followed by studio tours.

Join our dynamic Colour and Materials Workshop with Textile Design staff. Explore colour through material use and creative techniques through hands-on activities. All materials will be provided.

Find out more about our Interaction Design programme with this workshop. During the workshop you’ll find out more about creative coding and how to build an app on your phone.

The Marketplace is the central hub to meet other prospective students and staff from across the GSA. Here you’ll find a range of stalls from our professional services who support our applicants and students. You’ll also get the chance to meet students from our student ambassador team as well as some of our student led Societies at the GSA who can chat to you about studying and life in Glasgow.

Departments in the Marketplace will include our Student Support, Admissions, Widening Participation and Articulation Team, GSA Sustainability, our Student Societies at GSA Students’ Association, Archives and Collections, International Student Exchange and Study Abroad team and our Careers department.

Join the team at the Centre for Advanced Textiles (CAT) - our specialist digital textile printing facility at the GSA-for a technical demonstration and sample sale.

Many students joining us will apply to live in our halls of residence during their first year of study. The GSA has two halls of residence in Glasgow—Margaret Macdonald House, located in the heart of Garnethill, and Blythswood House, located a short walk from campus in the heart of the city centre.

Join the team at Blythswood House Halls of Residence to meet with staff and the Res Life team over coffee. You’ll also be able to take a self-guided tour of the facilities and find out more about life in halls.

Our library services team will be on hand to give you an informal tours of the library facilities and our study spaces for students. They can talk to you about the different kinds of digital and physical resources available to students to support your study in the Library’s collections from books and film to e-learning resources. Don’t miss the chance to see the amazing Lego model of the Mackintosh Building.

Join postgraduate students from a range of programmes across our community for a cup of tea and conversation in our informal postgraduate lounge to find out more about applying for and studying within the GSA’s Postgraduate Taught and Research community.

This session will detail how to apply for programmes across three of our academic schools—the Mackintosh School of Architecture, School of Design and School of Innovation and Technology. Staff from admissions will talk you through the application process, as well as key dates and deadlines for making your application. You’ll also have the chance to ask any questions you have about making your application for study.

There will also be a student panel question and answer session where you can hear first-hand about experience of life and study from a student perspective.

Tours depart from the GSA Students’ Association on Scott Street

Join us on a walking tour around Garnethill, the local neighbourhood surrounding The Glasgow School of Art. The area is a famous part of the city, encompassing a variety of traditional Victorian tenements and heritage buildings alongside urban art and twentieth century urban development. It has a very active local community, and includes a number of important community organisations, green spaces and community gardens.

The walk will be an hour long and will be led by GSA Student Ambassadors and graduates. The terrain of the tour will be mainly on pavements, however there are some steep inclines and hills in the area. If you have a question about the accessibility of the route, please email speak to a member of staff.

Take the short walk over to the Haldane Building where you will see exhibitions of student work and short informal tours of the Haldane Studios. Staff from our BDes Product Design; BSc Immersive Systems Design (Games and Virtual Reality and 3D Modelling); and BDes Sound for the Moving Image programmes will be available to show you student work and talk to you about the programmes on offer in the School of Innovation and Technology.

Join our Head of School and undergraduate Programme Leaders in Painting and Printmaking, Fine Art Photography, Sculpture and Environmental Art and Fine Art Critical Studies to find out more about studying Fine Art at The Glasgow School of Art.

Stow Building Drop in to the Stow Building during the day to meet and chat with staff and students from undergraduate programmes in the School of Fine Art. There will also be the opportunity to join tours of the studio running throughout the day.

This exhibition showcases the studio work of students from across the Mackintosh School of Architecture, including drawings, models and films made in partnership with other disciplines across Glasgow School of Art and beyond.

Drop-in to the MASS coffee bar to see a selection of student made films on housing and the built environment made by students as part of the History of Architecture and Urban Studies course.

Join students for a guided walk around the Architecture department. You’ll have the opportunity to see the workshops and studios as well as chat to students about their experience of life at the GSA.

Tours run 10.00-16.00 on a drop-in basis.

An introduction to the Mackintosh School of Architecture, with information on how to become an architect in the UK as well as our approach to teaching future architects and the variety of careers our graduates have gone on to achieve.

Join us for an information workshop for applicants on how to put together a portfolio for the Bachelor of Architecture programme with advice and examples of successful portfolios.
