CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2009! Mike Velasquez - Staff Reporter

Fifty-seven Glenrock High School seniors marched into GHS Gymnasium to “Pomp and Circumstance” on Sunday, May 17th, on the verge of stepping into the fast lane of life. Some will go on to college. Some will go into the service. Some will go right to work and some haven’t quite figured out what they’ll do next. Sunday’s GHS commencement exercises marked a milestone in each of the graduate’s lives. Not a time to be timid or scared, but a time to be bold and forceful as they moved forward further their biggest adventure of all…life. The Class of 2009 looked back on a high school career that offered a great many successes, academically and athletically. The Class of 2009 can take a great deal of pride in their years at GHS, and look forward to facing the world knowing they are prepared for the future. ments of the class, and dream of the possibilities of the future. Senior Class President Derek Sibrel listed a number of the positive things that happened during the Class of 2009’s time in the Glenrock school system. Brooke Hughes, who gave the senior address for the class, showed the excitement and enthusiasm that seemed to be the earmark for this class. Penny Macormic, who has followed the class since their early years at Grant Elementary, spoke fondly of

their development and growth over the years. As the seniors received their diplomas and threw their mortarboards into the air at the end of the ceremony, you couldn’t help get that feeling of excitement that the Class of 2009 always seemed to bring out. Congratulations Class of 2009!

MOONSTONE CREATIVE RESOURCES, LLC PRESENTS WOMEN IN HISTORY Jessica Smith - Staff Reporter

On Thursday, May 21st at the Converse County Library Glenrock Branch, Carolyn Eitel (of Moonstone Creative Resources, LLC) once again slipped into costume, assumed a new persona, and whisked away the audience to another time with another amazing woman in history. This month’s woman was Caroline Lockhart, an independent lady in a time when it wasn’t such a good idea to be quite so independent. Caroline Lockhart was born in Eagle Point, Ill., on February 24, 1871. After attending college in Kansas and a seminary in Pennsylvania, Miss Lockhart found herself employed with the Boston Post as a reporter and was asked to do many odd things in the name of journalism. At one point, she put on full diver’s gear and spent 30 minutes at the bottom of Boston Harbor--at another, she jumped into a fire safety net. Caroline seems to have always been a bit of a free spirit and when she moved to Cody, Wyoming, at the age of 30--unmarried and unchaperoned--she behaved no less independently. She wrote novels, homesteaded a ranch, and began the Cody Enterprise (a newspaper). “She was a very independent woman before it was popular and she got in some trouble for that,” Mrs. Eitel said with a grin. “She didn’t really fit in the mold,” she added, “Caroline had her own way of doing things and a lot of times people didn’t appreciate that.”

What of getting into character for such a liberated lady? How difficult is it to ‘become’ someone you’ve never met? Carolyn Eitel explained, “I’ve read and read and read and read….” “To really get to know who she was….[I] read [her] journal,” Carolyn said, “I think you need to hear in her own words her talk about her own life to really understand who she was.” And is there a little bit of Caroline Lockhart in Carolyn Eitel? “Occasionally…,” she said laughing, “I like and admire Caroline.” The Women in History events are put on by Moonstone Creative Resources, LLC in conjunction with the Glenrock Branch of Converse County Library, and are held on the third Thursday of every month. Mark your calendars for June 18th at 7:00 p.m. and come see Mary Todd Lincoln come to life as portrayed by Carolyn Eitel or her partner Patty Fenner. For more information on Moonstone Creative Resources, LLC, stay posted to the Glenrock Bird in the coming weeks. Sunday, May 24, 2009

WEEK AT GLENROCK’S DINOSAUR MUSEUM Jessica Smith - Staff Reporter

It’s springtime once again and that means that all the budding paleontologists have made their way to the Glenrock Paleontological Museum. Each and every spring for the last 5 years, 2nd grade students from Douglas have braved Interstate 25 with their teachers (and a few parents) to come learn about fossils with Director of Paleontology, Sean Smith and his crew. The museum creates small ‘packets’ for the students to fill out in the display area, takes them for a tour of the prep lab, and then down to the Rock in the Glen to find some bona fide fossils of their own to take home. “They had a really good grasp on what a fossil is and what pa-

happy with the Paleon. She had attended the tours five years ago, and had since left 2nd grade and came back this year to teach it again. Her thoughts on the tour? “I think it’s arranged beautifully--there are lots of different things for the kids to look at and explore….I was excited to know this was still going on,” she stated.

leontology is about, and they also came in with a very good curiosity, so they knew there was more to it than what they had learned so far and were looking forward to getting more information,” Smith said of his mini-protégés. The Paleon’s executive director, Stuart McCrary, was also very impressed with the knowledge expressed by these youngsters and was appreciative of the Douglas teachers for familiarizing them with certain dinosaurs before they got to the museum. “I like that they learned a dinosaur before they came in,” he said, “when they come in and see the dinosaur they’ve learned, it personalizes it for them.” “They come in to the museum and learn about all the other things we have as well,” he added, “I always enjoy working with kids!”

What of the students themselves? Do they like taking the tour at the museum? Joelle Foley, Kara Dunlop, and Sierra Garcia certainly do! “I think it’s pretty cool!” Joelle exclaimed, followed by Kara agreeing with, “It’s pretty cool!” Sierra added with a huge smile, “It’s awesome-I like it!” And this reporter, who also just happens to be a part of the Paleon crew, wholeheartedly agrees with Sierra on this point…..It IS awesome--and we DO like it! Paleon school tours are open year-round to any interested class from Kindergarten through 12th grade, and take just a simple phone call to set up. To get your class on the calendar for next year, call the museum at 436-2667.

TOWN COUNCILMAN STEINBACH SAYS GOODBYE TO GLENROCK Mike Velasquez - Staff Reporter

The Town of Glenrock is losing a true treasure. Fred Steinbach is retiring from teaching. At the May 11th meeting of the Glenrock Town Council, he resigned from his seat on the council and announced that he would be moving back to his hometown of Chariton, Iowa, at the beginning of the summer. Fred came to us about 28 years ago. For 24 years, he taught special education at the Glenrock Middle Councilman Fred Steinbach - Photo Amanda Smith School. During the last four years of his career, he taught at Roosevelt High School in Casper. He became eligible for retirement last year, but didn’t make the decision to do so until now. According to Fred, many things helped make this decision for him. His father passed away in October. While Fred and his wife Sherry were in Iowa taking care of his father’s estate, they began to talk about moving back home when he retired. Chariton is a town of about 4,500 located in South Central Iowa. After going back several times over the winter, the Steinbachs decided it would be a nice place to retire. “Sometimes change is good,” explained Fred. With Steinbach’s resignation, he leaves a seat he has held for six and a half years. Fred explained how he first came to run for a seat on the council. According to him, Councilman Bruce Vinnola approached him at church, explaining to him that there was a seat open on the council, and that Fred should run. After a little chiding on Vinnola’s part, Fred agreed to run only if Councilman Vinnola bought him a t-shirt with a target on the front of it. A few hours later, complete with target t-shirt that read “locally elected official,” Fred was in the council race. He was elected for the first time in 2002, and again in 2006. Photo Officer Kavenius © Amanda Smith Councilman Steinbach has seen a lot change during his six plus years on the Council. Some of the major accomplishments include the annexation south of Glenrock, the walkway, Volunteer of the Month program, and of course, the Commerce Block project. “I think there are a lot of projects that have been important to the com-

munity. The Commerce Block changed the way the town saw itself. Many of the businesses were in survival mode. That has changed I think,” stated Steinbach. The Steinbachs have already sold their home in Glenrock and purchased a new home in Iowa. They plan on leaving for their new home on June 4th. Fred will be sorely missed in our community. He is the type of man who not only sees that things get done, but very often, he would be one of the people getting his hands dirty to help complete a project. The staff of the Glenrock Bird would like to thank Fred and Sherry Steinbach for their time and commitment to our community. Glenrock will feel a little empty without you in our midst. We would like to wish you the best of luck in Chariton, Iowa. Certainly Glenrock’s loss is their gain. We’ll Miss You Fred and Sherry

News from the Nest HONORING FALLEN HEROES THIS MEMORIAL DAY Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., encourages all Americans to take the opportunity to honor the men and women who gave their lives in the fight for freedom and those who continue to serve and protect the country this Memorial Day, May 25. “This day is important for us to reflect on the turbulent times that our nation has faced in times of war and honor those who have selflessly defended us. I encourage all Americans to participate in the parades, wreath laying and other ceremonies across the country today and show their respect to our servicemen and women. “My wife, Diana, and I ask everyone to take the time and thank a veteran from the conflicts our country has faced. Also, remember to thank your friends and family and the people you see every day that you love for their support.” An honor flight of 110 World War II veterans from across Wyoming came to Washington, D.C. on May 19-20 to visit the memorial built in their honor. Senator Enzi met up with the veterans the night they arrived at the Wyoming Proud Honor Flight Banquet. The following day, the veterans visited the memorial and met with members of the Wyoming delegation and Diana. Since the Civil War, this day has been reserved to recognize, respect and honor America’s sons and daughters who died serving their country. For more information regarding the history of Memorial Day or for ideas on how to commemorate our heroes, visit www.usmemorialday.org.

Senator Enzi and his wife Diana observed Memorial Day at Anzio Cemetery in Italy in 2005. They laid a rose on the grave of a Sheridan, Wyoming soldier who was killed on January 23, 1944 while liberating Italy. Dozens of soldiers and sailors from Wyoming gave their lives in Italy toward ending World War II. Photo courtesy press secretary.

The Bird Herd LADY HERDERS CAPTURE REGIONAL TITLE Mike Velasquez - Reporter

The Glenrock Herder track and field team put their best foot forward when it counted last weekend as they they traveled to Wheatland to compete in the Class 3-A East Regional Track and Field Championship. In the team standings, the girls finished in first and the boys took fifth. The Lady Herders ran away from the rest of the field with great individual performances by Brooke Hughes and Nikki Tresch. The girls placed first as a team with a whopping 164.5 points, easily outdistancing second place Buffalo who finished with 111 points. Hughes dominated in the distance races, winning the 800 meter, 1600 meter, and the 3200 meter races. Tresch collected two additional regional titles for the Lady Herders, sweeping both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles events. The Lady Herders also captured the 4x100 meter relay (Jordann Stewart, Janessa Clark, Nikki Tresch and Jaclyn Hunt) title with a time of 51.83. The 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams each finished in second place. The boys finished in fifth place in a tightly contested battle. Six and a half points was all that separated them from a third place finish. The Herders were paced by Drew Nielsen, who won a trio of regional titles, including the 100 meter, 200 meter and 400 meter dashes. Dalton Down also collected a regional championship in pole vault with a leap of 12 feet. The Herder 4x100 relay (Drew Nielsen, Derek Sibrel, Dalton Downs and Ryan Lee) shocked the crowd with a time of 44.83 to edge out the heavily favored Douglas team and capture the regional title.

Glenrock residents will soon realize what warm, moist weather in Wyoming most generally always brings with it…MOSQUITOES. This year’s unusually moist winter and wet spring, combined with a quick warm-up and fast spring run-off, will undoubtedly have the community infested with those pesky little dive-bombing insects.

Senior Shenanigans Happy Birthday this week to Maxine Haynes. Be sure to stop in anytime this month for a free lunch courtesy of Deer Creek Drug. Please contact the center if you would like your birthday or anniversary added to our list. We will be closed on Monday, May 25 for Memorial Day.

According to Public Works Foreman Craig Dills, it could be an unusually heavy season for mosquitoes if all indications are correct. The town crew plans to begin their spraying ritual to curtail the crop as early as next week if the Wyoming wind will cooperate. According to Dills, “early morning and late evening are key times to spray,” and the Public Works crew will be out in force at every opportunity. Local residents are urged to, as in other years, be on the lookout for areas where water can pool. Still and stagnat waters provide an excellent source for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. Standing water can also be found in old tires, under benches and any other place where water is left standing. Mosquito bites are not only itchy and annoying, they also carry diseases such as the West Nile Virus and other deadly strains. Residents are urged to use mosquito repellant when going outdoors to avoid being bitten. Dills took a sample of some standing water out at South Recreation Complex in Glenrock, showing a large number of mosquito larvae in just a small sample of water in a one gallon jar. The photo below shows a mosquito already reaching adulthood (at right) from inside the jar that has only been standing at The Glenrock Bird offices for just a few days. Mosquito larvae (like the larvae shown at left in the photo below) can breathe for days in standing water through a small tube that just barely surfaces the water. It normally takes seven days for a mosquito to emerge into adulthood from these three aquatic stages: egg > pupae > larvae. This is why one of the most efficient ways to prevent mosquitos is to get rid of standing water. For more information on how you can help control mosquitos call the Public Works Dept at Glenrock Town Hall 436-9294. Photo © Amanda Smith

GLENROCK’S RELAY FOR LIFE SET FOR MAY 29th Mike Velasquez - Staff Reporter

The 2009 Converse County “Relay For Life” is set for May 29-30th at the Glenrock Town Park. The annual event raises funds and awareness to help fight cancer. The American Cancer Society, who sponsors the event, is asking for your help. The “Relay For Life” helps to raise money for cutting edge cancer treatment, and other necessary costs a patient incurs while fighting cancer. The event also raises awareness about this devastating disease and how it touches us all in one way or another. This year’s “Relay For Life,” the second to be held in Glenrock, will kick off at 6 p.m. with opening ceremonies and the survivor’s lap. Although nobody can imagine what living life with cancer is about, the “Relay” is designed to give you a glimpse of what fighting the illness is all about.
