by Kelly Pexton The Glenrock Bird had a chance to speak with Public Works Director Dave Andrews in regards to the future of our parks around town. For starters, some of the grills and park benches throughout Glenrock's two main parks (Town Park off Birch, and South Rec off Mormon Canyon) have fallen into disrepair. According to Andrews, these will either be restored to workable condition or replaced as needed. Four new grills will be placed throughout Town Park with two large double-sized grills

placed at the shelter building. One standard grill will find its home at the north end of Town Park, and another grill will be placed on the grounds in the South Recreation Complex (off Mormon Canyon road). For those grills with missing or damaged grates (beyond repair) new replacement grates will be provided. Several park benches around town have been damaged by vandalism over the years and have been in need of fresh paint and repairs. The park bench behind Glenrock Gas and Go (the old JJ's) has been removed for repair and the donor has asked that it be re-

All roads at Town Park will receive new asphalt and the potholes will be filled in. “As soon as the moisture dries up we’ll take care of the smaller holes ourselves,” stated Dave Andrews. “The bigger ones will be improved by a con-

Fairy Tale Spring: Once Upon A Time, there was a Town called Glenrock... whose townfolk only wished for one thing.... the Spring of 2010..... (but, I digress.)

The snowstorm that blew through Glenrock on Wednesday morning, May 12th left what little bit of Spring that had sprung, scattered on the streets below the trees. This photo was taken on 2nd and Cedar Wednesday morning... in the rain... and the snow... and the sleet...and the cold.... The snow, sleet, rain and cold were all but a distant memory come noon time and all of Glenrock went back to normal. The End. Photo © Amanda Smith.

MAY I CALL YOU A CAB? GLENROCK TAXI SERVICE OPENS

Opinions Dear Editor, I have a few questions about our community, and maybe others do too, or maybe they have the answers. • Why are there no checks and balances for the Board of the Glenrock Area Solid Waste Disposal District (G.A.S.W.D.D.)? (Aren’t we a democratic society?) • Why are the Glenrock Mayor and Director of Public Works in charge of the Board of the G.A.S.W.D.D? (Isn’t this a conflict of interest?) • How does the city of Glenrock use equipment from the G.A.S.W.D.D. without reimbursement? (I thought these were two separate entities?) • Why does the Director of Public Works live in a different town than Glenrock? (Does this explain why our needs in the town are not met in a timely or satisfactorily manner?) • What is the REAL reason for the “red tape” behind the G.A.S.W.D.D. just recently getting permits to transfer the waste to the Casper Landfill? • Why has the Transfer Station sat empty for over a year since its completion? Although the service performs the regular taxi duties, this is not your ordinary cab company. Not only will Glenrock Taxi Service get you from point A to point B, it will also pick up and deliver for you, your groceries, prescriptions, meals—just about anything you can think of! The range on this taxi service is a bit out of the norm as well, covering Casper, Douglas, even Denver and beyond. In fact, there’s not much this service won’t do. “Just about anything [a person] needs done,” Wright said, “I just want to help.”

town’s 2009/2010 Fiscal Year as part of the remodeling of the Town Hall. Rolling Hills was thinking ahead as the plans for the remodeling unfolded, as Rolling Hills Town Clerk Teresa Montgomery explains, “We knew that moving [the Clerk’s office] upstairs would necessitate a handicap access and therefore included that expense in the budget.” There is one more thing to be done now that the construction is complete as Montgomery clarified, “After the ramp is installed, Overhead Door [will] come in and finish installing the door.” Once this is done, the ADA ramp will be available for use and the Town Hall at Rolling Hills will be accessible to all. If you have a baby, toddler, or preschooler, set aside some time on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for the Glenrock Community Playgroup. The idea for the playgroup belongs to Trish Popovitch, who is aided by her trusty sidekick Jessica Smith.

WYOMING TRACK CLASSIC By Paula Flynn: Two student athletes excelled at the Wyoming Track Classic held in Casper on May 3rd. To participate in the Wyoming Track Classic, athletes must have results in the top 10 places among all classes from across the state. These athletes compete for the title “Best of the Best”. GHS athletes Shaynna Hoyt and Dustin Worthing-

ton were among those invited. Shaynna Hoyt “put” her Shot Put 36’2.5” for a 7th place finish against five 4A, two other 3A, and two 2A schools. Dustin Worthington competed in both the Long Jump and Triple Jump competitions. Going into the Classic, Dustin posted a 2nd best in the state in both the Long Jump with a leap of 22’3” and the Triple Jump at 45’2.5”.

At the Classic in the Long Jump competition Dustin improved by 2.5” with a leap of 22.’5.5” for a new Glenrock High School record and a 2nd place finish in the race for the Best of the Best. Then in the Triple Jump, he bounded for 44'1.75" for a first place finish and the title "Best of the Best". When asked about Dustin's accomplishments at the Casper

Class i c , Dustin's mother stated, "I am very proud of him. He's had a very successful year. His senior year has just been amazing for him. It is quite an honor to be asked to compete at the Wyoming Track Classic and then for him to have such great success, it just made me very proud. Long and Triple Jump are his strengths and we wish him all the best at the Regional

EXTRA! EXTRA! GLENROCK MIDDLE SCHOOL GETS THE SCOOP!

Staff of the middle school newspaper, The Ram, from back left: Tage Burd, Madeleine Brant, Jessica Caves, Jaelyn Walters, Kirsten Haynes, Jamie Hawkins Front row: Elijah Stewart, McCall Garner, Justin Love, and Kolten Thompson. Photo © Jessica Smith. by Jessica Smith G.I.M.S. 6th graders have jumped on the media bandwagon and created a school newspaper. Titled ‘The Ram’, this six page publication comes out every two to three weeks thanks to Editor Jessica Caves and nine other reporters. “Sometimes it can be a little hectic,” Caves

said (preaching to the newspaper choir), “because you don’t exactly know what you’re doing…because some people already have their stuff done and others don’t, and so we’re all mixed up, but…it’s fun!” The group decided on their paper’s name in an age-old ritual—called pulling a name out

of a hat. Some of the names that weren’t drawn were ‘The School Star’ and ‘G.I.M.S. Weekly’. The paper has six pages with such sections as Sports, People & Lifestyle, History, and a Word Search, along with reporting on things happening in their school. Jaelyn Walters, who enjoys her

job as reporter, covers the ‘For Your Information’ section and uses the internet for most of her information. “It…gives facts about the world,” she said of her column. Jamie Hawkins—another columnist—came up with a ‘Guess the Animal’ contest for each edition of the paper. “I’ve put these hints about…animals and then I put a jar in the office

and State meets." Glenrock High School Principal, Chris Gray had this to say about these two students, "This just tells you what kind of athletes these two are. They went up against the best the state had to offer and came away very successful. Not only are they great athletes for our school, but they are outstanding students as well. They always step up when the competition calls for it and represent us well in their individual events." and people can put their guesses in…if they win, they…get a free pop,” Hawkins explained, “It’s amusing to see…all the answers!” The group can get help and support from various teachers and administrators if needed, but have had very little cause to do so as of yet. “They just work so hard…they go down there every day after lunch,” said Middle School Principal Kerry Smith, “They have an enrichment period and that’s their enrichment, doing the newspaper.” Mr. Smith, who is proud of the way these students came to him with the idea of a school newspaper further added, “… there’s no if’s, ands, or buts about it…they get the job done. They’ve published two editions so far and they’re working on a third. It’s their initiative, they came to me…they’ve done it on their own.” The group plans to continue the newspaper next year during school if it is possible, and many of the students say they’d like to pursue reporting later in life (The Glenrock Bird anyone?). With initiative and drive such as they have now, these youngsters will no doubt succeed at whatever they choose to do.

Wiseman Torrington Track Invite By Paula Flynn: GHS athletes shone at Wiseman Torrington Track Invite on May 7, 2010. Among those shining brightest that day was Shaynna Hoyt who broke the school record in the Shot Put with a throw of 38'4". Speaking with Hoyt’s mother about her daughter’s new school record Lori said, “It’s been a personal goal of Shaynna’s to break the record. We weren’t able to be at the track meet because of work at the flower shop (Sunday being Mother’s Day), but she called us when she broke it and she just sounded “tickled pink”. My heart nearly exploded. I’m

not sure if our not being there helped her just relax and throw or what, but Danny and I are just so proud of her. She set a goal and worked so hard to achieve it. It’s a neat thing as a parent to watch that happen.” Congratulations to Shaynna and the rest of the GHS Track team and their impressive results at the Wiseman Torrington Invitational. Strong Candidates Vie For Douglas City Administrator Position Three candidates stood before the city council on May 10 to be publicly interviewed for the job of City Administrator.

tomer service,” Mackey said when tackling a question concerning his delegation skills and philosophy.

Mike Mackey made the trip from Sheridan, Carlo Pilgrim from Maine, and Lee San Miguel from Arizona. All took their turn in front of the microphone to answer numerous questions ranging in topic.

The job of City Administrator requires a person ready to take on leadership. When asked about his definition of management, Pilgrim said, “A manager gets the job done. A leader leads the people.”

With budget talks in process, the issue of fiscal budget is a burning issue. Mackey stated, “It’s an ongoing process.” “You can only do what you can do with the funds available.”

Pilgrim made strong comments regarding his feelings on working with the public. “What’s important is getting the input from the public.” “We’re doing this to provide a service to the public. We need to remember that.” “One thing I do, every manager/leader must do, I work with the people.”

When questioned about ethics, Mackey responded, “Honesty has to be at the top.” “I have a problem with people who are less than forthright.” “We all work together in cus-

Miguel tackled the question on ethics by saying, “One of the things you can depend on

with me is my integrity.” When speaking on public virtue, Miguel answered, “Virtue is honor. We’ll do everything we can in an honorable way.” Miguel took a stand concerning customer service. “Listen,” he said. “Listen to interests, not just positions.” Miguel also repeatedly made his point that he feels city government should be very accessible to the public. He mentioned occasionally moving council discussions to a public place to make people feel more welcome. The next city council meeting is May 24. The announcement of the new administrator is expected to occur at that meeting.

by Kelly Pexton

The May 10 Douglas City Council meeting ended without the announcement of a new Chief of Police for Douglas. The public will have to wait until Monday, May 17 to know who will be filling the position, according to Interim City Administator Forrest Neuerburg. A special council meeting is slated to take placein council chambers on the morning of the 17th at 9 a.m. At that time the long wait will be over. Former Chief of Police Lori

Emmert retired February 5 of this year. Since that time Douglas Police Sergeant Ron Casselenda has been serving as acting police chief. As previously reported in The Glenrock Bird, the three candidates awaiting the final decision are Sgt. Ron Casselenda, Sgt. Todd Matthews, and Chief Ryan Evans. Matthews, like Casselenda is currently a Sergeant with the Douglas Police Department. Chief Ryan Evans is the current Chief of Police in Monticello, Iowa. Cassenlenda has been with the DPD since July of 1981. Matthews has been with DPD since May of 1990. Evans has been

Chief in Monticello for six years.

All three have endured the lengthy process which started in the hands of the Sheriff and Chief’s Association of Wyoming. That group had the task of weeding down all the applicants to these final three. Now the decision has fallen into the hands of the Douglas City government.

Neuerburg has the job of filling the position. His decision is final based on concurrence from the city council.

Douglas Seniors Hit The Mother Load! Lots of money! That was the thought in the minds of many Douglas High School seniors at Awards Day on May 11. College is a great step to take. Those embarking on the journey make the transition from child to adult. They gain an advantage by furthering their education and continuing to expand their minds. With the rising costs of tuition, books, and the whole experience in general, college can also put quite a dent in one’s pocket book. Much to their delight, many of the Douglas seniors were rewarded for their hard efforts by receiving scholarships to help them as they advance to the next phase of life. Numerous scholarships were

handed out at the packed Douglas High School auditorium. They ranged from athletic scholarships to academic. Some were presented by college institutions, others by local groups. Regardless of where they came from or who they were presented by, each scholarship was a blessing to the recipient. The following students received scholarships on Awards Day in these money amounts: Alena Hetzer $2100, Alexandra Bruce $200, Brendon Edwards $1300, Cadi Dugger $16000, Cassandra Igo $1200, Chyna Baker $250, Danielle Evans $2000, Dylln Rider $4100, Elizabeth Butler $4500, Eric Thorsell $15000, Houston Falkenburg $5900, Jacob Marcus $14100, Jamie Geho $2000, Jesse Page $100, Jesus Ramos

$3250, Jonathon Richardson $5500, Kari Addleman $900, Kasey Watson $950, Katelyn Steele $100, Kevin Aaron Miller $500, Kiefer Murphy $300, Kristina Berto $4000, Laci Scheehle $250, Lauren Fracasso $20000, Marcus Jackson $250, Meghan Kolf $70268, Michael Oban $1650, Morgan Casperson $700, Morgan Peden $4064, Pierre Etchemendy $9838, Quentin Kane $1800, Raegan Scott $31700, Rhiann Dameron $3200, Sterling Spilinek $255104, Steven Nordwick $54024, Tara Paris $3300, Taylor Dilts $1000, Tiffany Sloniker $1000, Tim Fosmo $40000, Tori Hinds $500, Trae Seebaum $3900, Trenton Carr $1000, Tricia Jensen $48618.

Congratulation to all of you for your hard work!

What was ol’ Cookie worth?

COWBOY CORNER

He was sorta like a doctor; had remedies and cures. From blisters to Arbuckle’s; and saddle sores for sure.

Cowboy Poet Columnist TJ Casey THE CHUCKWAGON COOK

Who drove the old Chuckwagon; when they pulled from Abilene.

The Chuckwagon Cook

The one who cooked the cobblers, side pork and sourdough. Sometimes what a man could kill; from rabbit to buffalo.

The most important person that ever haled the range; is the one who kept the cowboys fed, and I reckon it won’t change. The one that cooked the biscuits, the taters, beef, and beans.

The one who drove the wagon when the herds were headed north. Who kept the fires going?

He could cook a gourmet meal with the staples of his trade; flour and salt, baking powder. You wouldn’t believe the grub that he made. Some said he could sure be cranky; cantankerous to say the least. He wasn’t afraid of anything whether it be man or beast! There was surely no complaining; about the spread cookie put out. You’d starve to death or cook yerself; on that I have no doubt! So if you have one thing to say, better have you another look; there’s a bunch of us boys who wouldn’t be here… if it weren’t for the Chuckwagon Cook!

I’m Just Sayin... The Natural Foods Store Experience Most people who know me would probably scoff in disbelief that I stepped foot into the Natural Foods Store. In keeping with all the celebrity excuses for bad behavior I would have to say that I’m addicted to Burger King – or I’m a Burger Kingaholic. That and peanut butter. I have an innate tendency to shy away from fruits and some vegetables. I’m a carnivore through and through and will choose to eat red meat before most anything else. It’s always been my opinion that man didn’t make it to the top of the food chain to eat just lentils. So I decided supplements were the answer. I walked into the store and found it pleasant enough. At first. I asked an employee where the natural supplements were and he looked at me as if I’d grown a cat out of my ears. He impatiently waved toward the other side of the store. I wandered that direction. It didn’t take me long to realize that half the building was supplements. Rows and rows of vitamins and minerals and proteins and bee jelly and flax, soy, gluten, whey, colon cleansing (whoa steer clear of that!), olive leaf complex and so on. Who knew that Jamaican Dogwood could help cure anxiety? Now you know. As I picked up this bottle and that and wondered at the purpose for each I began to feel anxious, hence the Jamaican Dogwood recommendation. If all these supplements were available perhaps I should be taking more of them. What if I was leaving something very important out of my diet? What if Gotu Kola was the answer to all my problems? Don’t ask you don’t want to know. I covertly began to watch the other people in the store. What had they selected? The first lady came by in an obviously cotton pair of pants and a knitted

hat and she looked completely organic. You know, all tans and woven bamboo. She took one look at my sweatshirt and turned up her nose. It was as if she had x-ray vision and could see that the label said 10% synthetic. Next came an elderly man with glasses as powerful as a microscope. His eyes loomed huge at me from behind the rims. He chose a bottle of supplements for good eye health. Holding up the bottle he said, “Been taking these for fifteen years.” He turned and bumped into the vitamin stand as he left. Another woman hit me from behind with her cart and then sighed in an exasperated way while she backed up and veered around me. No apology. It must have been the synthetic in my sweatshirt. I wanted to holler, “My jeans are cotton,” to her receding backside. Never mind.

In a store where good health and well-being is proudly displayed in every aisle how could so many people be so unhappy? Everybody I saw looked worn or concerned or just plain miserable. I strolled into the actual food section of the store. Soy blocks and powders, and unsalted this and low or no-sugar everything. I’m sorry but if I’m looking for something sweet, Amasake - a fermented drink made from sweet rice and koji (a grain catalyst in the fermentation process) - isn’t what I go for. No wonder everybody looked unhappy. I took my two bottles; one of veggie tabs, one of fruit tabs and made my purchase. Then I walked across the street to the bakery. Sugar might not be good on a cellular level but don’t they always say ‘attitude is everything” and “mind over matter?” I'm just sayin.....
