The actress also eagerly greeted all of them. “Pune has always been accommodating and pleasant. The people here have always greeted me with so much excitement,” says the actor. Sunny interacted with her fans, even enquiring about their day. Not just that, Sunny also performed on two numbers from Leela Ek Paheli.

With Saiyaan Superstar, the actor had the crowd eating out of her hands but she sealed the deal with her moves on the song Dholi Taro, from the same movie. Most men present at the mall were seen gaping at her moves and kept asking for more. With a hectic schedule to promote her film in various cities, Sunny entertained her fans just for
a while before heading towards the exit. Just as she was about to exit, Sunny’s fans noticed two women flanking her and we overheard people say, “Which one is Sunny Leone? All of them look the same!” Errr, maybe the fans haven’t paid much attention to Sunny’s face while watching her on the big screen. Well, now, we can’t blame them.

No, this is not a mushy, emotional, cheerful song. In fact, if Pharrell Williams heard the number, he’d run for cover. It clearly is the complete opposite. The Happy People video is already gaining popularity. Viewers are
appreciating the band’s take on the selfie obsession and public display of affection. The music video shows Vir and the gang pop up the minute someone is taking a selfie. They go on to not only ruin the mobile phone but scare away the person too. Vir also has some other interesting projects on hand and will soon be seen in Milap Zaveri’s Mastizaade, opposite Sunny Leone and alongside Tushar Kapoor. He is working on a new album titled, Chutney 3.0. The band plans to release one song on the third day of every month for 12 months.
Expect something energising in this movie Musician Joi Barua talks about his first music album, which inspired a song in the much-talked about Margarita With A Straw By Barnalee Handique @barnalee
T
he Indie Rock song Dusokute from Margarita With A Straw was released last week and it has already created a stir among music enthusiasts, with over 40,000 views online. Sung by noted singer Joi Barua, Dusokute can be literally translated into English as ‘in her eyes.’ The director of the movie, Sonali Bose, retained the Assamese word to add a special flavour to the story line. The song is considered to be the soul of the movie. The song was originally composed for Joi’s first and only Assamese album that was released in 2011, Joi-Looking Out of the Window. Sonali decided to listen
to the song when Joi’s name was recommended to her. The 38-year- old singer’s mellifluous voice and the energetic tone of the song captured her heart. She liked the sense of optimism, youth, hope and the feeling of love that the lyrics conveyed. Clearly, Sonali was convinced that she had to incorporate Dusokute in the movie. Joi says, “Sonali had chosen two numbers, Aikon Baikon and Dusokute from my Assamese album. Both songs are essentially rock songs and convey different emotions. After much deliberation, Dusokute was chosen for two reasons - the lyrics were perfect for a particular scene and the protagonist of the movie, who is from Assam.” Speaking about the movie, Joi says, “The movie was a coming together of lot Hope and of elements. The script has Feeling already garnered accolades at the Sundance Film Script Festival. When
I heard that the script was going to be made into a movie, I knew it would be well-appreciated. I felt honoured that they liked my song Dusokute. Moreover, Margarita With A Straw is my first movie as a composer and it was great working with the lyricist, Prasoon Joshi.” The original Assamese lyrics are based on Joi’s college life and memories in Shillong, Meghalaya. From the perspective of the movie, the lyrics were rewritten by Prasoon Joshi. It took nearly 30 days to complete the project. The music composed by Joi added to the kinetic energy of the song and it went well with the mood and feel of the scene. “We had a crazy time in the three days that it took us to record it. The original song was a solo but in the movie it is a duet sung by Sharmista Chatterjee and me,” reveals Joi. The breezy untempo song conveys what the characters in the movie are going through and what they want to do. Joi has sung for various Bollywood movies, such as Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Udaan, Jism 2, among others. He is also known for the jingles he composes for various advertisements. When asked which field is close to his heart, the singer said that both fields are creative and carry different levels of excitement. Currently, the singer and composer is working on John Abraham’s movie, Banana. He says, “Listeners can expect something different, pulsating and energizing in this movie.” Though Joi likes his role as a playback singer, his ultimate goal is to devote more time towards music composition and direction.

With every performance, at various venues - High Spirits, the New Wave Indie Festival, So Far India Session, The Acoustic Singer Songwriter Set at The Hive, and The Singer and Songwriter Gig at High Street Phoenix, Mumbai - Prateek has left the audience asking for more. Of course, what the audience wants, it shall get. The singer-songwriter is preparing to release his multilingual EP Different Shades of Me. The album has been in the making for the past year
and includes songs inspired by his life experiences in English, Hindi and Bangla. Talking about his pet project, the artiste says, “The songs
are essentially Folk, Country, and Alternate-music based. I have always been an atheist. Andhekhi, an acoustic rock song is based on atheism. If god really exists, I implore him to come down to earth and heal it through his powers. Another song, Drift Deeper is written on broken relationships and the importance of moving on in life. The song closest to my heart is Children of Love. I became emotional while writing the lyrics. It is sad to see the children of war-ravaged countries like Palestine, Iraq, Syria, and Pakistan. From a very young age, children are taught to wield a gun in these countries. The song conveys a message that the children should be handed weapons of love, instead of destruction.” Another song, Inner Love, is inspired by the Baul singers from West Bengal. Prateek is currently goading fans to join the crowd-funding project to create a video for Children of Love. The singer has certainly come a long way from listening to popular music. At one point, Prateek did try learning classical music but he eventually decided against it. “Every music teacher belonged to some gharana and taught a particular style of music. I had already set my mind on what I wanted to do, so I practiced on my own,” he recalls. Prateek explored different genres, such as, Funk, Reggae, Soul, R & B and Country, before choosing Blues and Funk and giving the genres his inimitable twist. Besides his solo projects, the singer is also part of two bands, Moonstruck Project and Prateek Bhaduri Singer and Songwriter Project. In next few months, the performer is slated to perform in music festivals and concerts across the country apart from starting work on his second album.

All for the love of

@kantawalazainab he talented and creative artists of Touch Heart Music are hoping to change the opinion of aam junta with regards to stray street dogs in the city. Having always been the sort who would rescue puppies from the street and take them home, Shantanu Naidu founded the group

four years ago. “Being around dogs and taking care of them is almost like a family value. A few of my friends decided to find loving homes for stray dogs. As we are all dog lovers, our involvement in the cause is stronger,” says the 23-year-old. The group’s motto is to use music as a tool to reach people’s heart. “We launched the campaign using a short music video.
NAVTARANG
Legendary percussionist Ustad Taufiq Qureshi, happened to view the video and, being a genuine dog lover himself, he decided to help us out by launching it.” Touch Heart Music is an ever-changing group that undertakes a social cause every year and creates music videos on various subjects. Their goal is not just to create awareness but to give opportunities to amateur artists with every project. Their past videos have been on child labour, Delhi rape case, saluting blue collar heroes, and adoption of stray dogs. They are also currently working on a tiger conservation project. “Touch Heart Music was born five years ago. I was a guitarist and a student of engineering. We didn’t just want to be a band, we wanted to stand out. Our first video, for the song Ab Lauta Do Bachpan Mera, was on child labour. I had a digital camera back then and I went around the city with my friend to capture shots of street children and students from municipal schools. The video was very well received. That motivated me to continue the work.” Paws for a Cause is the group’s six-minute music video that portrays the everyday life of a stray puppy, his thoughts, his quest for a loving home, in the voice of a kid, Aarush Dange. The video is based on an authentic, and sincere, script from the point of view of a nameless stray. The little puppy loses his brother to a car accident and his mother is poisoned. Yet, he has faith that he will find a big heart amongst humans someday, one who will give him a name and all the love he deserves. The stray is lucky, of course, and he soon finds someone to take care of him and call him John. “The music composition, script, shooting, story has been done by students and artists. All we want is for the video to reach as many hearts as possible,” adds Shantanu. Apart from the music videos, Touch Heart Music networks among people and provides an ‘informationexchange’ platform on Facebook for adopting stray puppies, dogs, kittens, and cats to people who are interested in nurturing them as their companions. “Before one can adopt a dog, they have to go through three levels of interviews. We ensure that the puppy goes to a home where s/he will be welcomed as a family member and will be loved. We conduct background checks of adoptive families and visit their homes to check if they are genuinely prepared to welcome a puppy in their lives. Also, if some families realise that they cannot keep the dog in their homes, then it should be given back to us. Until the dog is adopted again, our group members foster the dog on a rotation basis,” he says. The group has newer plans on its agenda next, “We pick up a social cause every year and prepare a soulful music video for the same. Currently, we are working on tiger conservation and are in the process of figuring out official permissions required to undertake a music video on it.” zainab.kantawala@goldensparrow.com

These are 5 of
the best burger joints
in the city
With a Miami-based fast food giant travelling to our doorstep, TGS Life decided to set off on a burger trail to find five joints in the city that serve the lip-smacking, food-on-the-go
By Anjali Shetty-Shirsath @shetty_anjali
L
ast week saw a global chain of fast food restaurants set up an outpost in Pune. The city has always had its share of spicy and crispy burgers. So, TGS Life decided to go around town finding the best burgers. A burger is a perfect, messy, yet tasty combination of all things yummy. Cheezy Bites, Aasing’s Kitchen, Burger, Burger Mail and Burger King, the latest to join the bandwagon, serve the bun-patty combo in various flavours, sauces, and styles. We came across tower burgers, snackers, mini sizes and whoppers. All priced between Rs 40 and Rs 90, the easy on the pocket, but heavy on your diet, delicacy is just craving to get your tummy.
Cheezy Bites, Paud Road Our first pick, Cheezy Bites is a five-year-old joint in Kothrud. It is neatly tucked on the busy road and can be easily spotted. Engineering students Omprakash Bishnoi and Sajal Praveen were seen gorging on Cottage Cheese Tower
Stidents enjoying burgers ar Cheezy Bites
Burgers. Being regulars at the eatery, they quickly point to the Cottage Cheese Tower Burger on the menu as their favourite at the restaurant. Owner Siddhesh Purandare humbly prepares the dish for us. In exact eight minutes, a huge burger which literally looked like a tower appeared on our table - the cottage cheese tower burger is built in three layers. The first wraps in fries and mayonnaise. The second layer has the patty, which is fried to perfection making it crispy and easy to bite into. The third layer is lettuce, tomatoes, onions and cheese. Another option is the Chicken Tower Burger, which has a huge chicken boneless fillet instead of the cottage cheese patty. While the burger was yummy, the only problem was holding the huge burger and eating it in one go. What we liked: The mayonnaise was creamy and had the right bit of tang. The burger buns were fresh and baked in-house. They were neither crumbly, nor chewy. What we didn’t: Music throughout the day in addition to a television set that plays music channels. Price: `70 for Cottage Cheese Tower Burger and `90 for Chicken Tower Burger
Aasing’s Kitchen, Law College Road If you live on Law College Road, or even in the vicinity, Aasing’s Kitchen must have definitely featured on your must-visit list. Owner Vilas Shinde started the place with the aim to serve college students a pocket-friendly menu. The burgers here are easy to hold but they get a little messy after the first bite. The mayonnaise and cheese sauce literally oozes out of the preparation. The place gets very crowded in the first half of the day and during evenings. There is hardly any place to stand and who have to gorge down your burger if you plan to sit down and eat. The best option is to parcel your order home. We tried the Popular Burger, which was a chicken patty deep fried and slathered with schezwan sauce, mayonnaise and cheese. The vegetarian and non-vegetarian patties are fried in the same pan so vegetarians beware. The burgers are decent in size but for those with a big appetite may have to order more than one. The cook takes no less than five minutes to serve up the dish. The veggies and stuffing are neatly sliced and placed in a row making it a quick serve. What we liked: Pocket-friendly rates, prompt and hygienic service. What we didn’t: View of Law College Road and pleasant weather. Price: `35 onwards

INDULGE YOUR CHOW AROUND TOWN BAISAKHI FOOD FESTIVAL AT WESTIN
Tour the lands of Punjab and indulge in mouth-watering north Indian delicacies by Chef Narayan Salunke this Baisakhi at Kangan. Relish dishes like Bhatti De Murgh, Dhabba Wali Kukkad Curry, Pindi Chole and much more. Let the flavors of culture come alive at Kangan. When: 11 April to 27 April Where: Kangan at The Westin, Koregaon Park
Aasing’s Kitchen, Law College Road
BURGER, MAIN STREET, CAMP Th is place is a landmark for most locals. Owned by Shapoor Irani, the joint is a hot favourite among college students not only for its prices but also for its range of products. The Jumbo Chicken Burger (Rs 80), is huge, literally falling out their serving plate. The patty is crisp, fried just right, and placed on a bed of onions, tomatoes and cucumbers. It is then topped with mayonnaise and cheese sauce. Finally the burger bun is placed on top.
You may have to request the waiter to cut the burger into half to be able to have it. Still think you won’t be able to gobble the entire burger? Here’s a regulars’ advice - you can keep it in the fridge overnight and heat it the next day. The taste remains the same and you will never feel like you are biting into a day-old burger. The staff here is rather impolite though. If you want to while away time and enjoy every bite of your burger then choose a spot on the ground floor of the outlet. There’s a better chance you won’t be shooed away from there. What we liked: Reasonable rates and fi lling burgers. What we didn’t: Shrewd staff Price: `35 onwards
BURGER MAIL, WANOWRIE
Th is is a small van which opens doors only in the evening, post 5 pm. It sells burgers and fries at throw away rates. The taste hasn’t changed for over a decade now. The staff is eager to offer a menu and even helps pick a burger. Since the van is parked by the roadside, Burger Mail does not quite offer an ambience. But one bite into the burger and you won’t mind standing on the road. The patty is fried only once the order is placed thus keeping it crisp and hot. You can choose from mayonnaise, cheese and tomato sauce to line the bun. You can also ask for veggies you
don’t like to be left out. There is nothing fancy about this place. But it is a great stop for a quick bite. What we liked: Decent service and well-made patties What we didn’t: Happy, smiling faces and helpful service Price: `30 onwards
BURGER KING, PHOENIX MARKET CITY The place is crowded ever since it launched a few days ago. People literally travel across the city to savour a bite from ‘the original burger king’. We picked the Mutton Whopper because everyone was raving about it. Clearly, there’s a good reason it has gained popularity among patrons. It is a fiery grilled patty with onion, tomato and sauces. So, you have this real king size burger with an equally huge fi lling. It appears like every other QSR but the taste it what sets it apart. The patty is well done and fiery. The sauces played a right balance. What we liked: The size of the burgers What we didn’t: The fact that you are eating at the original Burger King Price: `169 for a Mutton Whopper

The ‘go kart’ thing that Mini harps so much about is no marketing mumbo-jumbo; the Cooper has absolutely fabulous turn-in responses and mates them to leech-like grip. hen KTM first hit terra firma in India, one expected that it would kill all the locally made competition, particularly the Bajaj Pulsar. However Bajaj stuck to their guns in producing a practical daily-rider sports bike that you can buy and own without ripping a hole through your wallet. This strategy of theirs, which seems to have worked so far with the NS selling at par with the Duke 200, has continued with the Pulsar RS 200. This bike will definitely turn heads. The contemporary styling with sharp design cues screams for a second glance. The Zapper S tyres provide more than ample grip and leaning into corners is a breeze. It’s very unintimidating and easy to handle, even for an amateur. In the past, the Pulsar brand has strived to make their bikes easy to own and maintain. A trend, we think, will continue with the RS 200. Bajaj claim 35-40kmpl on daily use, which is fair enough for a 200cc faired motorcycle. At Rs 1.18 lakh, the Pulsar RS 200 is the cheapest 200cc faired motorcycle in the country. hat makes a movie? At its very basic, a good plotline requires a good guy, his love interest, a bad guy, romance, tragedy, action and, finally, a happy ending. Be it Bollywood or Hollywood, the crux of most of fi lms rely on the good versus the bad concept. In a discourse on Ram Navami, Baldev Das Prabhuji, member, The
Ever wondered what inspires scriptwriters of blockbusters? ISKCON members have given it some thought and they believe plots of numerous scripts in the entertainment industry are adaptations of epics such as Ramayana and Mahabharata. TGS Life finds out more about the comparison
International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKON) said that there are only so many plotlines to choose from and most movie scripts are inspired from scriptures. While reading a book written by AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Baldev Das Prabhuji realised that people tend to fall in the trap of rasas. That is when he started to find newage rasas of this lifetime. “I realised that sports and entertainment (movies) is what appeals to people today. They are more in touch with fi lms and entertaining themselves. On further research, I found that these fi lms have romance, drama, action,
comedy, tragedy and glamour. I immediately connected it to our scriptures. Ramayana has all of the above, and more. The scripture is more than 5,000 years old, yet it holds a perfect example of everything from drama, to tragedy, to action. It is a complete entertainer. I am not saying that scriptwriters read the Ramayana and write a script. But the basic plot is similar in every situation. You have a good person, something goes wrong with his loved ones and he sets out to take revenge. The bad guy is powerful and resourceful, yet good prevails over evil. Th is is what Lord Krishna aims to spread through his teachings,” Baladev Das Prabhuji explains patiently. There are many rasas father-son, mother-daughter, brother-brother, master-servant and these relationships are used in fi lms as well. Most pop culture fi lms revolve around stock characters. “If you go on to check the origin of entertainment, you will know people adapted scriptures to catch the audience’s attention, take Ram Leela as an example. Even when fi lms were fi rst introduced, Ramayana and Mahabharata were favourite picks,” he adds. Baldev Das Prabhuji believes that the entertainment industry provides what people want and, Krishna has inspired entertainment in its purest form so people should appreciate it. “In every lifetime, Krishna descends from the heavens to make his teachings available to his devotees. He brings his entire troupe along. Whether or not you accept this connection, scriptures will never become redundant.” Still think the connection between mythology and modern-day fl icks is too far-fetched? Read on to see if our analysis convinces you otherwise

countries to win her back. Girl’s father plays spoilsport. However, after much ado the couple is together. The film was a huge hit and has now become part of Bollywood lore. Mythological rethink: Actor Shah Rukh Khan’s character Raj is the Ram in this story, the late Amrish Puri’s Baldev Singh is Raavan, Kajol’s character Simran is akin to Sita, while Dharamvir Malhotra, played by Anupam Kher, is the Hanuman equivalent. The lovelorn girl goes back to the knight in shining armour with the help of the boy’s father after a lot of drama quite like the goings-on in Ramayana.
Taken Synopsis: Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson), a former government operative, is trying to reconnect with his daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace). His worst fears become real when sex slavers abduct Kim and her friend while they are vacationing in Paris. With just four days until Kim is to be ‘auctioned off ’, Bryan must call on every skill he learned as a black operative to rescue her. Mythological rethink: Liam Neeson is Ram while the various villains in the many sequels of the movie represent Raavan. The father’s struggle to save his daughter brings a filial twist to the Ram-Sita love story but he ensures she stays alive and everyone lives happily ever after.
Features PK Synopsis: A stranger on earth dispels long-held notions that people cling to, usually, without knowing the actual reason. He solves problems and helps people. He also exposes a bogus godman. Mythological rethink: Aamir Khan plays PK, think Ram, Tapasvi Maharaj played by Saurabh Shukla is the Raavan here, Sanjay Dutt’s Bhairao Singh is Hanuman. Sanjay Dutt’s character helps the protagonist at crucial points, just like Hanuman assists Ram in the mythology.
Chennai Express Synopsis: Shahrukh Khan’s character’s journey to fulfil his late grandfather’s last wish turns into an unexpected adventure when he meets a young woman (Deepika Padukone) from south India. Mythological rethink: SRK represents Ram, again, Nikiten Dheer’s Tangaballi is the Raavan equivalent, the female lead, Deepika Padukone, stands in for Sita while all the villagers represent Hanuman. The connection in this movie is pretty evident with the hero taking on the villain and saving the heroine just like Ram did for Sita.
The Dark Knight Synopsis: The Dark Knight is the caped hero known to save the city of Gotham often. His nemesis, the sinister Joker has another card up his sleeve. This is one of Batman’s biggest challenges, yet. Mythological rethink: Every superhero seems to be inspired by the gods. Gods, after all are the original superheroes. Take Krishna, Ram and even Hanuman as examples. All of them did the unthinkable, from lifting mountains to slaying demons. In fact, the Joker would seem like small fry compared to the powerful villains pitted against the gods. anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

Is it easy sharing the stage with your wife? “The success and appreciation the play received from the audience was quite overwhelming,” says the entrepreneur-actor, adding, “I go into this with no expectations from myself. I simply tell her (Nandita) that I shall do the best I can, as an actor and a producer. Yes, there were ego clashes. She is very disciplined when it comes to work but with time you cope with these things.”

Support young theatrewalas Head to Lalit Kala Kendra this weekend to watch a student production TGS News Network
@TGSWeekly n artist should be like an empty vessel, observing and seeking inspiration from everywhere around him. So believe students of Lalit Kala Kendra, Savitribai Phule Pune University. They’ve clearly sought inspiration from far and wide until now. Broadening their horizon further, the students present Goshti Shejarwasachya based on two plays a 1960 play by Lawrence Hansberry called The Raising in the Sun and Brandon Jacob-Jenkins’s recent play, The Neighbour. Besides dealing with racial issues in the United States, both plays comment on racial discrimination and post racial problems. Working on Goshti Shejarwasachya got the cast and crew of the play thinking about the many issues it threw up. “The play has taught me that even though we belong to different ethnicities, we are essentially humans. It’s about how simple concepts can complicate social situations. We aren’t trying to provide any solutions through the play, but, as youngsters, we thought the play

could become a medium to bring up such issues for a discussion. The play is the voice of the unheard,” states Vaibhav Lokur, a student of the institute. At a time, when the scope and opportunities for performing arts is on the rise, plays like Goshti Shejarwasachya gain more importance. “Every year, we explore different themes for the play. We decided to combine the two very popular plays so that students could learn and get hands-on experience. Marathi theatre has seen many translated works being put up on stage, but not a single Afro-American play has been produced in Marathi so far. This is the first attempt by our students,” says Praveen Bhole, assistant professor, Lalit Kala Kendra. Talking further about the play, Praveen says, “In the last century, the newly migrated Afro-Americans have established their own entertaining form called minstrel shows, which advanced into popular Broadway musicals. Goshti Shejarwasachya also narrates this history of American theatre.” Students adopted various literary elements to capture these elusive tones. “This is my fifth play. In this play we have used poems, compositions, and puppets. The play talks about social issues that people faced in the past and are facing presently,” says Ajit Sable, a student.

y first visit to Juna Bazaar was in my teens, in the 1990s. As a young boy, I would collect old coins and the market was a treasure trove of second hand and antic stuff. The things that were sold in the market could easily qualify as junk for someone, but were a priceless treasure for others. As a school boy, I was mesmerised by the number of old British and Mughal-era coins that were available in the market. My fascination for collectibles took me back to Juna Bazaar over and over again. Several years later, I outgrew the hobby and visits to the market slowly took a backseat. It was almost 15 years later that I revisited Juna Bazaar to scout for some stage property (props) for my theatre production and I was not disappointed. The market was still a thriving place. Yet, certain things had changed ― there were more electronic items on sale than earlier. The bi-weekly bazaar, held every Sunday
and Wednesday, was bustling with people. Although Juna Bazaar largely caters to the lower strata of society, if you have a good eye for artefacts, you can easily end up buying some priceless goods at a throw-away price. While at the market, I browsed through road side stalls that sold old mobile phones, computer monitors, glassware, clothes, perfumes, antique furniture, shoes, and so on. I was astonished to find numerous DVDs of foreign and Indian classic movies along with antique gramophone players. I was keen on buying a brass statue of a Gorkha soldier. I had to bargain hard with the salesman, but my patience was rewarded and it is now one of my prized possessions. Juna Bazaar has been around for more than a century. It was initially a market that sold a lot of used material, such as army uniforms and other military materials. But, now, one can find almost everything under the sun. One has to be willing to be pushed and jostled in the crowd, apart from bearing the

Nothing like some cardio to kick start a wonderful day Your current four-wheeler: I live in Mumbai, I can’t afford to spend hours stuck in traffic, so I don’t drive here Your fitness regime: I work out six times a week, sometimes even two times a day. I’m a complete gym rat and my day isn’t complete without my daily dose of endorphins Your food indulgence: I am a complete foodie. I can indulge in anything from south Indian food, to desserts, to Italian fare
