Five must-watch plays this week

FEBRUARY 21, 2015 PUNE

Features

Monday onwards, some of the country’s best plays will be performed at Balgandharva Rangmandir. Have you bought your tickets yet? TGS NEWS SERVICE

@TGSWeekly n its seventh year, The Vinod Doshi Theatre Festival brings together much-talked about plays from Jaipur, Bangalore, Pune and Mumbai. The mix includes awardwinning performances as well as debutantes, and, of course, stage veteran Naseeruddin Shah. Here’s a low-down on what to watch out for in every performance.

I

Ujaagar Dramatic Association’s Kasumal Sapno The festival kicks off with a Hindi/Rajasthani adaptation of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream performed by the Jaipur-based group. The forest outside Athens, in the original, is replaced by the enchanted woods of Amrogarh where the actors play out their parts. Watch out for foot tapping music by Raghubir Yadav (of Peepli Live fame), gigantic puppets, and a cast that includes over 30 actors. Director Ajit Singh Palawat does a fine job of interweaving three worlds: the palace, the forest and the puppets. “This is the first time that Pune’s audience will watch Shakespeare in Rajasthani colours. We have turned some scenes of the play into musical pieces. Collaborating with Raghubir sir was a big opportunity for us. The play also highlights Nakal, a Rajasthani folk art form that is rarely performed anymore,” says Palawat. Kasumal Sapno has been travelling across the country since its stage debut. It recently bagged the Best Play award at the Kala Ghoda Festival,

Mumbai. Next month, it travels to Pakistan to participate in National Academy of Performing Arts’ international theatre festival and later in the year, France beckons. For now though, Palawat is keen on performing before Pune’s audience, “The audience, in Pune, understands and appreciates good theatre. They also point out shortcomings of the play, if there are any.” When: Monday, February 23, 7.30 pm Flinntheater’s C Sharp C Blunt MD Pallavi is not a doctor. She, in fact, is an awardwinning actor and singer, who carries C Sharp C Blunt on her slender shoulders. Her job is no less difficult than a medical practitioner though. It’s not easy, after all, to engage a huge audience all on your own. Pallavi is, indeed, modest enough to share the compliments with director Sophia Stepf and the rest of the crew. C Sharp C Blunt essentially has Pallavi playing a mobile app called Shilpa, which behaves ‘exactly the way men want their women to behave...until the next update is released.’ She takes her time to think of the reasons one should make time to watch the play in the middle of the week. The Pallavi

begins the enumeration, “The play is funny, it’s current and it interactively involves the audience. We aspire to have a dialogue with the audience. It is a devised play, despite the bound script.

Getting the META Best Script Award was the jewel in our crown because the play is always a work-in-progress.” When: Tuesday, February 24, 7.30 pm Maharashtra Cultural Centre’s Aparadhi Sugandh Ask playwright-director Kiran Yadnopavit why audiences should buy tickets to Wednesday night’s performance, and his instant reply is, “because it’s about them.” He adds, “There are agents who are pulling away elements of the Punekaris’ lives, their heritage, pieces of their neighbourhood and Aparadhi Sugandh portrays this situation.” The playwright was troubled by the increasing number of incidents wherein sandalwood trees, nurtured over the years, were being cut down by ‘smugglers’. “Not just trees in public areas, those in private bungalows and housing societies, even sensitive areas, were cut down and there was no mechanism to arrest the thieves. This happened to one of my friends, who tried protecting a sandalwood tree near his house. The police refused to help since they couldn’t provide protection to trees,” Yadnopavit states, explaining the beginnings of the play. He earnestly hopes the audience finds a local connect within the play and, unlike the protagonist of Aparadhi Sugandh, is able to help preserve the environment they have lived in for years. When: Wednesday, February 25, 7.30 pm

Indian Ensemble’s Kaumudi Kumud Mishra, Gopal Dutt Tiwari, Sandeep Shikhar, Shubhrajyoti Barat ― the four cast members of the play ― are among the finest theatre practitioners in country the today. Just watch them on stage together would make Kaumudi a paisa-vasool performance. Audiences have been raving about Mishra’s performance and the play’s dramaturgist, Irawati Karnik, points out that Tiwari’s character is one to watch out for as well, “he really grows on you through the play and makes an impact towards the end,” she opines. The play, which essentially explores the changing relationship between an estranged father and his son, has been well-appreciated by both audiences and theatre critics. “The play has had some amazing performances in Mumbai and Bangalore. In fact, some people bought tickets to watch it consecutively because they enjoyed it so much. Kaumudi is essentially a play within a play. It is a retelling of Mahabharat from the Dalit point of view. It is set in an imaginary theatre in Allahbad, where the play within the play takes place over three days,” Karnik explains. When: Thursday, February 26, 7.30 pm Motley’s Ismat Aapa Ke Naam Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, and Heeba Shah ― just these three names should make sure you book your tickets for the evening well in advance. They play captures Urdu writer Ismat Chugtai’s indomitable spirit on stage. And, if that’s not enough, music for the play has been composed by noted writer,

director, music-composer Vishal Bhardwaj, while Sanjiv Abhyankar and Rekha Bhardwaj provide the vocals. The play premiered in 2001 and through the last 14 years it has travelled all over the country and the world, coming to Pune for the second time. In fact, just before reaching the city, the play will be performed in Pakistan, where Naseeruddin Shah will also release his book And Then One Day. Heeba, the youngest cast member, points out that she has literally grown as an actress with the play. “I’ve learnt so much by doing this performance. It changes every day. It grows richer because of its audience. Ismat Chugtai’s writing is the real hero of the performance. She really knew how to use the language. She captures the prejudices, historical facts and so much more with a sense of humour and she manages to communicate the words so beautifully,” says Heeba, about the play. When: Friday, February 27, 9.30 pm

THRILL OF DRIVING

Drop-top dream

A compact luxury drop-top. Tushar Burman wonders if the recipe will work

W

e’ve ruminated on the concept of “compact luxury” in issues past, and the world has moved on even in that short period of time. Not that we’re surprised. We’ve known from the get-go that the Audi A3 Cabriolet would be coming to India. Within a span of a couple of years, we have a new product category and already, segmentation within it. Who’s the A3 drop-top for then? The sedan makes a good entry point into the Audi stables. A second or third car to run errands in, for the very well settled. A reasonable statement for the up-and-coming MNC golden boy. Take away the top and the diesel motor, add significantly more to the sticker price and what do you have? All those sensible cases are out the window. To be fair, the A3 Cabriolet still ends up being one of the cheaper convertibles you can buy in India, outdone only by Mini, and I’ve seen a few of those around. It occurs to me that the market for the Cabriolet is the same as the one for the Mercedes A-Class, which sold only for its looks and panache. If there’s one thing that attracts more attention than a sports coupe in India, it’s a drop-top. And that top drops in 18 seconds, while on the move. Us hacks may be jaded by it, but it never fails to elicit at least a few mobile videos from passers-by. Once you roll all the windows down, all four of you in the car can use individual selfie-sticks for your twit-facing. It’s got to be worth at least a hundred likes. The group will have to pack light, though; the top takes up a bit of the boot, so you’re left with 275 litres. Never mind. Just buy what you need in Goa. Remember to take plenty of breaks though; the rear accommodations aren’t as friendly as the A3 sedan, which was tight in itself. This is thanks to the 42mm reduction in wheelbase (the same as the A3 Sportback). You’d think that this translates to a different driving dynamic, but for the most part, it doesn’t.

Which brings us to the driving. The Cabriolet is about 135 kilogrammes heavier than its hard top brother, and the suspension Right: Seats are well bolstered but appears to have been tweaked to compensate could do with more for the different weight distribution as well. under-thigh support. Where the A3 was competent, the Cabriolet Below: Interiors and is downright soft. Sure, if you push it hard equipment are the enough like some of the rally drivers in the same as the A3 sedan team, it’s going to feel wallowy and vague, but thanks to the soft springs, this is a car you can drive fast and not think about crashing through every minor imperfection in the road. This is a more important issue than most would give credit for. The 177bhp 1.8-litre turbo four is silky smooth and takes the Cabriolet from 0 to 100kmph in 7.8s, about half a tick slower than the sedan. Keeping it in sport mode provides reasonably quick shifts from the 7-speed DSG ’box and there generally seems to be Verdict enough power in reserve for + Sharper looks, most maneuvers. improved ride and Steering is characteristically light, refinement and while not sports car - Engine lacks thrills, sharp, you can generally tough price-point tell where the wheels are TOD rating pointed. If you’re in the ;;332 market for a sporty driving experience, then it’s best you look elsewhere. This is a leisure vehicle derived from a front-wheel drive compact platform. It’s not going to give you anywhere near the thrills of a BMW Z4 or even the erstwhile 330d convertible. At `45 lakh, you get a small, fun vehicle that you can throw a few bags in and take off for a weekend with friends. Sure, for this sort of money you could get a properly equipped luxury sedan, but then you probably have one of those already, leaving the A3 cab to (if the weather is right) live out your Dil Chahta Hai fantasies with the top down. tushar@evo.in

Specification: Harley-Davidson Breakout

Below left: 21-inch front rim looks smashing. Below: Slim brake light above fat tyre is eye-catching

Abhay Verma thinks that the Breakout is the coolest looking Harley-Davidson yet

I

f the Oxford English Dictionary were to include HarleyDavidson in its rapidly increasing base, the definition would read something like this: V-twin engined motorcycles epitomising the American concept of freedom and the open road, with George Thorogood and the Destroyers screaming Bad To The Bone on the onboard audio system. For Harley riders, it’s all about their motorcycle looking good, which also explains Harley’s virtually never ending customisation catalogue. One of the newest Harleys that has just gone on sale in the country, the Breakout, is yet another dyed-in-the-wool HarleyDavidson with its long rake, low stance and wide handlebar. The Breakout has been developed by Harley-Davidson’s Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) after all. Custom paint jobs and accessories, even bigger engines with Screamin’ Eagle performance parts are par for the course with CVO specials and the Breakout gets all of that. It is the newest addition to the Softail family (the same as the ridiculously popular Fat Boy), and is styled on the Gasser drag racers of the sixties. It boasts a wide, flat handlebar and a massive rear tyre, which has had it being compared to the Night Rod. However, while the Night Rod is more of Harley’s modern-day take on drag bikes, the Breakout is more retro, cool in its own way, with a spindly 21-inch tyre up front and massive 240-section, low profile 18-incher at the back. The Breakout looks so good out of the box you don’t need to change anything! It was

built to stun with its presence. The design of the fuel tank, the starry silver finish, raked out front end and massive rear tyre are all traditional Harley traits that contribute to the awe inspiring appearance. At nearly two and half metres, the Breakout is a long motorcycle, with a low saddle height of 660mm. It is easily the best-looking Harley-Davidson on sale, I think. As I got astride, I had to stretch my legs halfway to the horizon to reach the footpegs. Turning the Breakout in the rather cramped parking lot of the showroom was a task. With a wheelbase of 1710mm, this is the longest Harley on sale, and its 322kg kerb weight doesn’t help matters either. The massive, chrome-laden 1690cc, aircooled V-twin looks and sounds familiar, producing 130Nm at a mere 3000rpm. Harley doesn’t reveal power figures but I reckon this

engine makes approximately 90bhp. It feels as smooth as ever, and is mated to the same six-speed transmission as other Harleys. First gear arrives with a massive clunk, almost as if someone slammed a hammer on a thick metal sheet, and gearshifts aren’t feather light either, though precise. And each time you shift up through the tractor-like transmission (you need to go by the sound, Harleys have no tachometer, remember) you need to hold on tight to that flat handlebar because 130Nm can deliver some serious turn of speed. Despite its heft the Breakout can gather momentum rather quickly, and the speedometer

needle will surprise you with its alacrity to swing around. Even at a speedo indicated 120kmph in sixth, the engine was barely crossing 2500rpm which speaks a lot about its nature. The seat is nice and comfortable though, and I’m sure moving the footpegs an inch towards the back will help. The Breakout is an apt description of what Harley-Davidsons are about. It is a motorcycle that’s about living a dream, and not manic performance. And that’s why you buy Harleys, don’t you? abhay@evo.in

“Dance is universal it has a tremendous reach. Today dancers around the world are doing wonders, creatively, physically and imaginatively” — Irisha Poonawala

They have got their moves right and are dancing their way to fame. Anjali Shetty chats up with members of popular dance troupes in the city

A

merican psychologist Wayne Dyer said, “When you dance, your purpose is not to get to a certain place on the floor. It’s to enjoy each step along the way.” Following that philosophy, and enjoying and making the most of each step they take are the talented dance groups of Pune. From intercollegiate events to national level competitions, these dancers have carved a niche for themselves. Now that they have attained some status, they are also keen on dispensing their knowledge of their art and craft to a younger generation of dancers. TGS Life speaks to Dinit Roham,

Young blood: Dinit’s Xternal Force Crew Founded in the year 2008, Xternal Force Crew has made a big mark of Pune’s hiphop scene. Founder Dinit Roham, 26, who has an MBA in marketing, has been teaching dance for six years, and he has trained more than 3000 young dancers from all over India.

Dinit also set up the XF Academy at Karvenagar in 2009. The dace group has won 30 national and 50 state level dance competitions, include prestigious competitions at the Mood Indigo IIT Powai (2010, 2011, 2012) and Channel V Indiafest (2010, 2011, 2012). They have performed on reality TV shows like Dance India Dance, Dance Maharashtra Dance and Channel V Street Dance. The group has also produced and choreographed the biggest hiphop dance show series in Pune called ‘It’s Showtime 1.0 , 2.0 , 3.0‘. Avikk Parkour, director and choreographer, has been involved with dance for over a decade. He has directed, choreographed and performed in countless shows and shoots, from Bollywood to international projects. “I consider myself fortunate that my dance and musical journey has given me the experience of working with so many talented artists and performers, on international platforms. My passion, dedication and belief has been strong and I have pursued acting and dancing even as a commerce student and doing IT Engineering. It took me a few years to give up my stable corporate job and take up my art as the only profession. I couldn’t have made a better decision,” says Avikk. Connect with your inner self

“You can party, eat nonvegetarian food and still be spiritual” -Smita Jayakar

Film and theatre actor Smita Jayakar has another facet to her personality not many know about. She is also a spiritual healer. Jayakar is well known to Hindi film audiences, having featured in popular movies like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Mast, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, Devdas and Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani, and her co-stars include Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor. But off camera, Jayakar has been playing quite a different role for almost thirty years, that of a spiritual healer. Through her seminars, workshops and healing sessions, Jayakar has helped and influenced countless number of people across the country. Excerpts from the interview:

Rahul Raut

When and how did you get initiated into spirituality? The seed of spirituality was sown by my first guru Prabhuji. That meeting stirred up many thoughts and issues I had never focused on. I did not even know the difference between religion and spirituality. I visited my guru often, seeking answers to mysteries of life I had never been able to fathom. That was the beginning of my spiritual journey, 30 years ago. What did you learn from it? Simplicity is what defines spirituality. Just be what you are. Spirituality doesn’t mean that you have to pray to God every day. The connect with your higher self is important. You can party, eat non-vegetarian food and still be spiritual. The main focus of spirituality is to connect to the absolute power, and how you do it is absolutely your business.

Seeds of spirituality

Smita Jayakar

Your journey after that… I couldn’t get enough of spirituality. I joined the ‘Oneness University of Spirituality’ at Chennai. The various courses, teachings, processes and deekshas at the University taught me to move and flow with life and to connect to the absolute power. That’s where my learning happened and I could feel my inner self

being cleansed. Today, everyone is waiting for spirituality, but they do not know how to get it. Whatever I have learnt about spirituality and chakras, I wanted to spread the knowledge among my friends and colleagues. On my guru’s insistence, I gave my first talk in Pune. It has been 12 years since then. I have been regularly organising talks and workshops in Mumbai and in Pune. What is chakra healing? Chakras help one to connect the internal and external world. When universal light passes through your body, the chakras light up like a rainbow. They are in the same colours and in that order. When the chakras get aligned, one gets aligned to the universal energy and is happy. Which spiritual writers influenced you? My life has been influenced by the writings of Paramahansa Yogananda, Osho, Brian Weiss and Eckhart Tolle. What is Before Tomorrow about? In both my spiritual quests and my material pursuits, I have had many ups and downs, which have blessed with me a treasure trove of experiences. These have enlightened me with different shades of our existence. In the book, I have shared these experiences with my readers. In fact, you can call it a practical manual to upgrade your world view so that one can function better than beforein this world. The best part of it is that you can sample it all while still holding on to your car, your job, your faith, your food and all other lovely things in life. What will change, though, is your view about spirituality. More importantly, about the one that really matters in life: you! Is spirituality needed for youngsters and actors? Most of the youth are suffering from broken relationships and peer pressure. They are looking for answers, findings ways to connect. Spirituality will help them to understand and connect to the world around them better. Movie stars live in bubble. They lap up the adulation showered by their fans. They cannot face it, when their career ends. That’s when the trouble begins and they find it difficult to accept life. It’s important to find the perfect balance in life. There’s inherent dichotomy in everything - black and white, yin and yang, night and day, positive and negative, characterised by polar opposites. And, yet everything works just fine because there is balance. How can one balance one’s life? Like everything else in nature, there are two factions to our life too the external and the internal world, and it takes both of our worlds to be complete. The material conquests and our worldly pursuits comprise our external world. Our spiritual nature, which is intricately connected with our attitude, emotions and feelings make up the internal world. These two worlds are like two wings of a bird, which have to be in perfect sync for the bird to fly. barnalee.handique@goldensparrow.com
