Films being targeted to get publicity: Aamir Khan

TGS LIFE FEBRUARY 14, 2015 PUNE

If his autobiography is anything to go by, his life might not be the most exciting thing to watch on the big screen

Aamir further said that the film industry has now become a soft target for people who want cheap publicity. “It is an unfortunate fact that nowadays, every film seems to have attracted some or the other controversy. There was a case of plagiarism filed against Rajkumar Hirani for PK. The person filing the

She has acted with R Madhavan and Dhanush in her films Tanu Weds Manu and Raanjhanaa and found them to be good people apart from being great actors. But a stint in the experimental film X brought her closer to the Tamil industry and the working of its technical crew. X is a film that looks at a filmmaker’s fractured journey through life, presented through fragments of his past. The narrative unfolds in the course of a night when he meets a mysterious girl who triggers off memories of all the women who shaped his life. Since no two women are alike, each woman has been treated by a different filmmaker. Eleven filmmakers with disparate styles worked on this bridge between different kinds of Indian cinema. And after all the chapters of his life were shot, the episodes were broken down again into further pieces and put together like a jigsaw puzzle by ace editors Sreekar Prasad and Vijay Prabakaran. Talking about his forthcoming movie, which stars Varun Dhawan, Yami Gautam and Huma Qureshi, he said: “For this film, we didn’t need a big star. When I signed Varun for ‘Badlapur’, he was just one film old and now he has become a star.” In the past, Raghavan has directed movies like ‘Ek Hasina Thi’, ‘Johnny Gaddaar’ and ‘Agent Vinod’. His last movie as a director, ‘Agent Vinod’, came out in 2012. Why take such a long gap between his films? Reviews Behind the crackpot writing, direction and acting, MSG without a doubt, is a gigantic advertisement for Dera Sacha Sauda. How dangerous is this, you may ask yourself. The Dera has millions of followers and heaven knows there are people gullible enough to believe all the magical tricks that Pitaji does in the film. However, keep your concerns at bay because it’s great to have more movies which are bad enough to be fun rather than the ones that are so bad they’re terrible. Besides, why wouldn’t you want more movies featuring a saint, with curly arm hair, in a rainbow costume, playing a guitar with both hands, while riding a bike, over a swimming pool, in the air, as two female fans in the pool cheer in awe? Why the film faced any ban is a mystery. You can laugh with the movie, and more so at the movie. It’s a win win. I reckon the censor board wanted to ban the movie for being too awesome. I am in a very happy space right now. A sense of being loved is such a great feeling. So there definitely is going to be a valentine’s celebration for me. Whether in love or no, Salman Khan will always be my first Valentine and given a choice I will love to celebrate with him.

Researchers have warned that the supplements could result in harmful side effects including liver toxicity. Also, drinking green tea in the weeks before taking supplements likely reduces risk of side effects, the findings showed. "Drinking green tea rather than taking supplements will allow you to realise the benefits and avoid the risk of liver toxicity," explained Josh Lambert, associate professor of food science at College of Agricultural Sciences, Pennsylvania State University. Tea is rich in catechins, polyphenols that are natural antioxidants. A number of animal studies have shown the preventive effects of green tea polyphenols against obesity. When food is cooked at high temperatures or aged for a long time such as in hard cheese, it increases the content of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), a group of compounds that are combinations of sugars and proteins and other large molecules. AGEs increase the risk of various chronic diseases through several mechanisms including increased inflammation and oxidative stress. They can also bind to the receptor for AGEs (RAGE). RAGE transports beta-amyloid proteins across the blood-brain barrier and contributes to the development of Alzheimer's disease, the researchers explained. "We found that mice kept on a diet high in AGEs, similar to Western diet, had high levels of AGEs in their brains together with deposits of beta-amyloid proteins, a component of the plaques characteristic of Alzheimer's disease," said Jaime Uribarri and Weijing Cai of The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York. The researchers found that meat made the highest contribution of AGEs, followed by vegetable oils, cheese and fish. The study was published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. IANS

ridge magnets and postcards with pictures of red and green chillies of all shapes and sizes - there you go! Picturesque Bhutan's love affair with chillies - and also with cheese - is so profound that it's not just a food seasoning for its people. It's revered as a vegetable in itself, so much so that the national dish - ema datshi - revolves around it. The tiny Himalayan kingdom, in essence, warms up to the sight and aroma of chillies -roundish, elongated, big, small, red or green. Be it the small plastic containers of dried beef and flaming red-chilly mix at the local store or the fresh and wholesome ones at the open-air grocer, it is ubiquitous. Take for example, a curry of ema (green chillies) and datshi (cheese) - the ema datshi. It is packed with fragrances and flavours accorded by the juliennes of chillies poking out from the creamy broth. It looks alarmingly fiery but is intriguingly mild on the taste buds. "The way chillies are cooked and mixed with other ingredients balances the heat. Chillies are available in dried, powdered and blanched forms as well," a host at the famed Folk Heritage Museum Restaurant in Thimphu, told IANS. Restaurants across the sleepy

capital city also serve mushroom datshis and other variants but you can't escape the chillies, though. Slices of green can be seen sticking out through the brown-white stew. The cheese used for datshis is made from cow's milk and is usually put to use for sauces, stews, soups and the like. Ema datshi is served with another staple -

the slightly sticky, pale pink, fragrant red rice. Cultivated for thousands of years in the region, the nutty-flavoured rice is boiled and eaten with chilli-based dishes or also with bits of meat and potatoes (sham drey). For tourists without a clue about the local food, a dinner/lunch course at the Folk Heritage Museum Restaurant is worth the hike

uphill from Thimphu. Known to have played a key role in reviving traditional Bhutanese cuisine, a small dinner course includes soup, datshi, red rice, buckwheat pancakes, a meat dish (pork, beef or chicken) and a plethora of salads and pickles. And all these are served in shiny wooden bowls with wooden ladles. This is how locals normally eat their food - bite-sized portions of everything heaped on wooden saucers and plates atop wooden tables. Intricately painted with motifs - elephants, dragons, snakes and colourful geometric patterns - the tables and the wooden chests lined with kitchen paraphernalia set the scene for a magnificent meal. Watch the sunset or sunrise over the gigantic snow-capped Himalayas with a warm bowl of thukpa - filling mouthfuls of noodles and soup, accentuated with fried eggs or chicken. Rustled up in a jiffy, thupka for some is the ultimate comfort food. However, it also has its critics who find the thukpa bland. A cup of salty butter tea (shu ja), steamed dumplings (momo) stuffed with cheese or meat and generous sprinkles of fried puffed rice, around up a perfect snack in the laps of the Himalayas. Well, don't forget the spicy red chilli chutney that comes with the dumplings! — IANS

n February 14, the day set aside to revel in the glories of love, city couples relive memories of just how they happened to meet the love of their life, and how every day since has been Valentine’s Day for them.

Chalk and cheese: Anand Bhanushali and Shweta Chaugule When and how did you meet:

Shweta: It comes across as a surprise to many, but we actually met through a wedding portal, in 2008. We got talking and before we knew it we became really great friends. However, it was not until 2010 that we realised that our liking had blossomed into love, which culminated into us getting married in 2012. Over the years our compatibility, understanding and friendship has grown stronger by the day, which is a firm and perfect foundation for our relationship. A relationship that works is based on love and respect for one another and each other’s families, and, touch wood, we are blessed with a strong support system, though we both come from different cultures - Anand is Kucthi and I am a Maharashtrian.

The proposal: Shweta: It was Anand who proposed, of course! We had both realised that our relationship was working and that we should be together. And one evening when we were out with our friends, Anand decided to pop the question. It was epic, as our friends were telling me to say ‘no’, and Anand had forgotten to bring along a ring. But seeing the emotion in his eyes, and the frankness with which he expressed his feelings in front of all our friends, I couldn’t help but say ‘yes’. To tell you the truth, I was waiting and praying for such a day to dawn.

The journey: Shweta: We celebrated three years of togetherness in January, and I must say that it has been a rollercoaster ride, with all kinds of ups and downs. But just being there for each other makes it easier to cross any hurdle. I have learnt a lot after marriage, be it cooking, or just how to remain calm and composed. I used to be quite hyper before, and I probably still am. But after marriage, a

lot has changed. Responsibilities enable you to grow and evolve, for the better. For Anand and I, the journey has just begun. Anand: I have always liked my own space, be it from what to eat or how the house is kept. But after getting married, all that has changed. We give each other space by doing our own thing. Like when I go out with my friends without her, she makes her own plans or just watches a horror fl ick. Shweta loves reading too. This way, we give each other space and also balance it out by finding time to do things together. This balance has made this journey easy; though we have our share of fights, but then which couple does not, right?

Positive aspects Anand: One of the things I love about Shweta is her ability to make me smile and laugh even when times are rough. She gives me positive strength when I feel negative. She is always by my side through everything, good or bad. Shweta: I absolutely love everything about Anand, but the one thing that is most important to me, is how he is with my family. My mom and dad keep saying that they did not give away a daughter but actually gained a son, which is so true. Anand has always been there for my family through everything and his support means so much. I also love the fact that he accepts me for who I am, not for how I look. He is my strength; he is my critic, my friend, my partner in crime, which makes life so much more special.

Improvements: Anand: Shweta can be very lazy and loves to eat all kinds of junk; she is a complete foodie. I would love for her to be more active and eat right to lead a healthy life, as we are not getting any younger. Shweta: I don’t think I would like to change anything about Anand, because this is who I fell in love with. Yes, one thing I would not mind him working on is his compulsive nature. He has definitely worked on it after marriage, but he can be a tad difficult at times.

Valentine’s day: Anand: Actually I am not a romantic person at all. For me, February 14 is just a regular day. But since I met Shweta, it has come to mean something, because she loves Valentine’s Day and loves to celebrate it in simple but memorable ways. Shweta: I love Valentine’s Day, for the reason that it’s one day when we can celebrate our love, I know we can do that every day or any day, but who has time now with our crazy and hectic lives? So, on February 14, I make it a point to do something yet special.

Over the years our compatibility, understanding and friendship has grown stronger by the day. -Shweta Chaugule

Space matters

Anand Bhanushali and Shweta Chaugule

The romantics: Sheetal and Santosh Gaikwad When and how did you meet:

Of crushes and love: Minoti Makim and Riaz Lawyer When and how did you meet:

Minoti: We met when we were 16 years old, at St Xavier’s College, Mumbai. I had a crush on him and thought he was really hot. The rest is history.

The proposal:

Minoti: He proposed many years later, if that could be called a proposal (laughs).

The journey: Minoti: It has been a combination of travel

and leisure, MTV Spring Break, Lost, Ally McBeal, Sex And The City and Game Of Thrones! It’s been really awesome in parts and challenging in others. We have a lot in common and the plan is to keep building on that. The journey has been colourful and full of memories.

Positive aspects: Minoti: He is really handsome, very intelligent and has a beautiful laugh.

Improvements: Minoti: His listening skills.

Valentine’s Day

Minoti: Valentine’s Day has sometimes meant a bunch of beautiful flowers; other times it has been a ‘recycled’ box of my favourite chocolates, which is a great memory. Sometimes it’s a dinner out with just the two of us. It’s always something different!

Sheetal: We met online. We were both trying to rebound from the bitterness of failed relationships. It was great to share my innermost feelings with someone I didn’t know, because I had no fear of being judged. At the same time our families were looking for prospective matches for us. It was an emotional ride as nothing was working out. We realised that we both understood each other like no one else did. In 2002, we decided to meet at Vaishali, FC Road and I still remember the day very clearly. We met at 7pm and he was standing there in a grey T-shirt, which I still preserved as memory. We did not have cell phones back then. He called me before leaving from Mumbai, and told me the colour of the clothes he was wearing. My first impression when I saw him was, ‘Oh god, he is such a teddy bear.’ He was a little heavy back then and had a dense beard. I went up to him and introduced myself and that was the first time I was dazzled by his beautiful smile.

The proposal: Santosh: My parents were pestering me to get married and that is when I thought of Sheetal. She always understood me and I felt connected to her. I never wanted an arranged marriage and had no girlfriend, so love marriage was not an option that time. I liked chatting with Sheetal and felt that we were very compatible. So I asked her to marry me instead of playing the dating game. Sheetal: I was hesitant. I liked him, but was not sure how my parents would react So I asked him to speak to my parents. After a three-hour grilling, my dad said that he wanted to meet Santosh’s family. Though we belong to different castes, it did not matter at all, and to our surprise, our parents didn’t even discuss caste.

The journey: Sheetal: It’s been 11 years since we were married but we have not had a single fight, touch wood. Our journey together is wonderful and beautiful, because we are there for each other always.

Positive aspects:

Sheetal: He is always positive about everything. We started as friends and till date we have maintained our friendship even after getting married. He is my best friend first.

Improvements: Santosh and Sheetal Gaikwad

Sheetal: He doesn’t need to improve on anything as he is just perfect. Our most memorable day is the one when we got married. anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

Sam Bullough’s art exhibition held at Gyan Adab, Kalyani Nagar in January, was a demonstration of art’s therapeutic value and the individual rejuvenation BY YASH DAIV @yash009

Canvas, for 35-year-old Sam Bullough has been a space to unshackle his thoughts, sentiments and creativity. Art is a perspective on the inner turmoil and has the power to liberate the enchained anxieties. Bullough has channelled this turmoil through his art, which is in turn a therapy for the self. Art therapy involves this kind of non-verbal communication, through creative expression. The emphasis is more on the process (rather than the product) to uncover and develop meaning – then the verbal communication can take place, or not.
