eteran actor Dimple Kapadia, who will be soon seen on the big screen when the English-language film Finding Fanny says she found the script of the film “brilliant” and her role “lovely”. There are not too many filmmakers in Hindi filmdom who attempt to make a film in English, but Dimple says, “It didn’t matter to me whether it’s an English film as long as I was working with Homi Adajania.” “The script
was brilliant and the role was lovely, which I thoroughly enjoyed doing. So, it didn’t really matter to me. And where it’s going to reach is not my concern. My concern is with what I’m doing, and I’m happy doing that,” Dimple, who had worked in the director’s dark drama Being Cyrus. And she’s happier that the family is loving the promos of Finding Fanny. Dimple may be seen as an accomplished and strong actress, but the Kaash and Rudaali star, who displayed her versatility in films like Zakhmi Sher, Arjun, Aitbaar and Drishti, is not yet creatively satisfied. “I’m not satisfied in the sense I am not looking for any roles, but I do
make peace with myself saying that ‘I am not the best in the world’. But I have tried to give my best and I want to get better.” “That struggle will remain till the time I really feel that I have achieved it in my head. I keep falling short,” the 57-year-old said. But she is happy to get good scripts at this age. “At the moment I am very happy and the kind of scripts I am getting and the feedback I am getting is making me feel happier and makes me feel that whatever I am doing is right. It just helps me to choose my roles better,” she added. “Over the years, a lot of things change. You start off when you are young and you are fearless. And then a lot of things keep happening and a little bit of fear sets in and you are not as brazen as you have been. Overall, (it’s) okay,” added the actress whose life has seen many ups and downs. BYOND Journeys and VCONNECT Holidays take the travel experience to happier levels for their clients By Barnalee Handique @ barnalee

ajnikant Sinojiya and Bhushan Rathod launched VCONNECT in 2008. The concept aimed at making travel hassle-free and convenient for their clients. Sinojiya’s personal experience was that when he wanted to set off on a long travel vacation, he was unable to find a travel agency that could undertake all the tasks and formalities, like tickets and such. He was forced to do everything on his own and it proved to be quite time-consuming and complicated. This experience spurred Sinojiya to conceive of VCONNECT in which he roped in his friend and colleague Rathod. Dealing with the entire range of travel formalities such as passport, visa, tickets etc, the vconnect travel services, ensured a complete package for its clients. However Sinojiya decided to focus on holidays after some time. BYOND Journeys was the new venture that the duo launched with its focus on India, Nepal and Bhutan. Meanwhile, VCONNECT Travel and Holidays was devoted to customised international travel. The distribution of tasks has enabled the organisation to provide efficiency of service. Rathod manages VCONNECT while Rishikesh Shah takes care of finance and special interest tours. The twin enterprise emply 20 staffers and they can attend to the needs of around 3,000 clients. The use of sotwares for every aspecr of operation is a unique feature VCONNECT & BYOND journeys. They employ an enterprise resource planning system that keeps tracks of everything from he beginning of a tour to its completion. This immaculate attention to every details and their ability to plan and organise tours in clockwork fashion has proved to be a great success, both for the organisation and more importantly for the customers. BYOND Journeys offers special interest tours, leisure tours, premium tours, short break tours and getaways. The special interest tours include a road-trip in Ladakh that provide for leisurely sight-seiing. Also on offer are motorcycle rides to Numra valley. A holiday package includes rafting, camping at Pangong lake and more. The
Rajasthan holiday package involves bicycle tours, taking in the Aravalli region and lodging at palace hotels and such. The packages for senior citizens cater to their special needs and involve a more easygoing and leisurely schedule. Even children are catered for with visits to recreational spots and centres Leisurely holidays run over from five-10 days and nights. Premium holidays provide5star facilities and travel. The short trips and getaways cover 20 destinations, that are within easy access to airports. Reviews exist 46 years ago. Each of the characters enlivens this weird journey, with their overlapping, frivolous and humorous concerns. Are the right people finding Fanny?

Eventually, the actors do justice to the fictional characters. Deepika Padukone makes for a pretty Goan village belle, Dimple Kapadia is believable as a control freak mother-in-law, Arjun Kapoor, a forlorn lover and Pankaj Kapoor the oddball artist. But the soul of the film is Fanny’s lover Ferdie, played by Naseeruddin Shah. He is an overgrown child who writes sorry notes and thank you letters even though he can barely balance himself on a vehicle. He has waited for her all his life, not knowing where she is. He daydreams about Fanny, still young, waiting for him at the door. The actor delivers a superlative performance with child-like expressions, smiles and (allergic) reaction to cats. Lesson of love
The film proves it is easy to find love in any corner of the world. You just have to go looking for it, feel it and embrace it. Again, not really a new message, but the composition of a road trip gives it a fresh interpretation. Finding Fanny is disturbing in parts, especially in the manner that deaths have been portrayed. It’s supposed to be funny, but goes overboard. In between, the film’s pace falters, a few things get repetitive but overall, it does not bore you.

he Yeti hasn’t really set sales charts on fire – it’s been too pricey, too feminine in its styling, too small to sway traditional SUV buyers from the default Fortuner. So why is Skoda India persisting with the Yeti? Ostensibly there are still inquiries, however small, for the Yeti but mostly it is to maintain a presence in the SUV segment till Skoda’s next generation SUVs (which includes a big 7-seater) debut in a year or two. This Yeti isn’t really an all-new model. The nose has been given a nip and tuck, there’s a new steering wheel, a more sophisticated Haldex differential for the 4×4 and a new range of accessories. There is only one topend ‘Elegance’ trim with the 2.0-litre diesel engine and still no automatic transmission. Changes to the nose mean the funky fog lamps have been papered away and the headlights are now conventional units, though incorporating bits of Skoda’s slinky new design language. The fog lamps are now small units in conventional positions at the bottom of the bumper, and I bemoan the loss of the Yeti’s distinctive funkiness. What we get in India is the off-road styling package that includes a silver-finish bash plate at the bottom of the front and rear bumpers to give it some off-road credo. The roof is a two-tone job (black with some colours, white and silver with others), bi-xenon lamps with LED DRLs are standard, as are roof rails, and there are three new alloy wheel designs (all 16”). The rear gets C-shaped tail-lamp graphics
but that’s about it. Overall the effect is not too different from the older Yeti but it remains a very attractive car, so long as you don’t want the Fortuner’s domineering SUV-stance. The interiors are mildly updated which means a steering wheel borrowed from the Octavia. But then again, it is not like there was much wrong with the Yeti’s interior. Quality remains top notch, there’s keyless entry and a new touchscreen infotainment screen (no parking camera or navigation), the driving position is lovely, the varioflex rear seats (the centre part can be chucked out to make it a four-seater) are retained and the boot is, well, small. The Yeti retains the 2.0-litre diesel engine with the 6-speed manual transmission. The front-wheel-drive variant gets 108.5bhp Haldex differential (that weighs over while the 4×4 gets 138bhp. We got a kilo less and makes the clutch the 4×4 variant which made action lighter), and the Yeti can light work of lugging the be hustled with such vigour Verdict cycle up to Gulmarg and that an enthusiastically + Ride and Sonmarg from Srinagar. An unbridled big feather in its cap. And joy, I should add. it can also off-road decently The Yeti definitely does not – far better than its size might drive like an SUV. Over wet roads suggest. The 4×4 also gets an offand in the mountains the Yeti was an road mode for the ESP and ABS along absolute joy to punt around. There’s terrific with hill-descent control and an electronic grip, thanks also to the fifth generation differential lock.
In terms of fuel efficiency, even in the hills – and given the stick – the Yeti returned well above 14kmpl, which is great. The problem always was the sticker price, and it remains: the new Yeti starts at Rs 18.99 lakh, going up to Rs 20.53 lakh for the 4x4. The Fortuner has all but stitched up the Rs 20 lakh SUV segment and the Yeti isn’t going to worry Toyota too much. More to the point though, the Renault Duster AWD undercuts the Yeti by a fair margin at Rs 12.18 lakh. We might love the Yeti but there are other SUVs that make far more sense. Fact remains that no matter how great it is to drive, or how unique its styling, the Yeti makes little sense from a value perspective and that remains its one and only stumbling block. sirish@evo.in

S
uzuki India’s newly crowned flagship motorcycle, the Gixxer, is the newest entrant to the 150cc segment. Aimed to take on its entrenched competition, the Gixxer has been developed to deliver the best in performance, handling, and efficiency. The new bike does not share any parts from Suzuki’s other 150cc offering – the GS150R, save for a few bolts. In fact, it will not replace the GS150R and will be sold alongside it. The streetfighter design is well executed and overall the bike excudes a clean minimalist look. The 155cc engine and cycle parts are new. The Gixxer catches the eye as sharp, clean lines project a lithe, agile-looking machine. The compact design enhances the riding experience. The raked headlamp is complemented by the thick 41mm front forks and tank extensions. The sculpted tank has deep knee recesses with the rear sloping sharply towards the rider. The rear gets a short tailpiece with body coloured grab rails designed to look like a part of the tail. The triangular LED tail lamp gets a satin black finish shroud. The stand-out feature is the stubby exhaust with twin functioning exhaust ports. The all-digital instrument console is minimal and provides comprehensive data legibly. The 140-section tyre makes for a streetfighter look from the rear and provides loads of grip. The engine uses Suzuki’s SEP (Suzuki Eco Performance) technology which reduces frictional losses to ensure optimum performance and efficiency. The result is a smooth and vibe-free engine that loves to be revved. Claimed output from the carburetted 154.9cc motor is 14.6bhp at 8000rpm which is the highest in class, while torque delivery

is 14Nm at 6000rpm. Add a low kerb weight of 135kg to the mix and you get a pretty quick motorcycle. Suzuki has opted for a five-speed gearbox instead of the GS150R’s six-speed unit, which helps acceleration. The long-stroke mill provides grunt from low revs accompanied by mid-range punch. The low seat and rear-sets coupled with flat handlebars make for a sporty riding position. The 41mm front forks and 7-step adjustable rear monoshock set-up work brilliantly, soaking up bumps with ease while delivering class-leading handling. Riding the bike in
the wet highlighted its poise and composure aided by sticky 110-section front and 140-section rear MRF Zappers. The Gixxer is very easy to ride on the limit thanks to the communicative nature. The tyres grip well on all surfaces with the limits of adhesion felt with a gradual slide rather than a violent snap. The front disc rear drum combo works well with excellent feedback allied to sharp bite. On loose surfaces, the low-down torque allows you to provoke the rear to step, while its compact dimensions allow you to control the slide. This is a fun bike to ride.
Suzuki claims a fuel efficiency of 63.2kmpl made possible by the SEP tech. High quality components are well put together and the bike exudes a built-to-last feel. This should ensure reliability and low maintenance costs. Priced at Rs 72,199 (ex-showroom, Delhi) the Gixxer undercuts its closest competitor, Yamaha’s FZ series, significantly. And, for that price, you get a well designed and well put together motorcycle which uses quality components with excellent performance and handling. benjamin@evo.in

afe culture has taken root and is here to stay in Pune, though there are no cobblestone sidewalks as in Paris. And these cafes serve as neighbourhood hangouts for people from all walks of life to mingle, to see and be seen. And these days most such cafes provide wi-fi connectivity, besides offering a showcase for their clientele’s art or handicrafts — and some also harbour readers’ nooks with a library, no less. The main attraction is the brew and the most cafes serve very high quality coffee in a range of flavours, to suit their discerning clients’ tastes.

The idea for this unique little cafe was conceived about a year ago when Vishal and his wife Neha were travelling together. “We wanted a place where we could settle into a cozy nook, adrak chai in hand and read our favourite authors all day long,” says Vishal. “As we are always on the move, we also wanted to serve healthy and wholesome food. Pagdandi is an endeavour in that direction. A place you can relax, chill out and interact with like-minded people,” says Vishal. Vishal had been backpacking for two years before he met Neha, who she was touring Kerala. “It was my dream since college to see every state in the country and after working as IT manager at Convergys, a customer management solutions company for five years, I quit my job to fulfi l my dream,” says the 32-year-old Baner resident. “I was travelling from state to state, city to city, learning from various

A born rebel who died a lonely death Title: The First Naxal: An Authorised Biography of Kanu Sanyal; Author: Bappaditya Paul; Publisher: Sage Publications; Pages: 249; Price: Rs.550

t is amazing that Krishna Kumar Sanyal alias Kanu Sanyal, who played vital role in the genesis of the Naxalite movement, began life as an anti-Communist. Kolkatabased journalist Bappaditya Paul tells us that Sanyal developed a hatred for Communism after the CPI denounced Subhas Chandra Bose for siding with Hitler. This very readable book is the story of how Sanyal later embraced Marxism in its most extreme form — Book and went on to regret it later. This is also as much review a story of the Naxalite movement that plagued India 2007, this book meticulously unveils in the late 1960s and early ‘70s as it is a saga of Sanyal. Paul reveals how Sanyal and his comrades built the that Sanyal who was the real initiator of the CPI and later the CPI-M in Siliguri that peasants revolt in Naxalbari village in West included Naxalbari. Mazumdar was the Bengal in May 1967 it ignited what came to reason Sanyal embraced Communism. But be known as the Naxalite movement. Charu Sanyal says his biggest regret was his failure Mazumdar was its ideological father — and to oppose Mazumdar’s disastrous advocacy face. of “annihilation of class enemies” that turned Based on 121 sittings with Sanyal since West Bengal into a killing field for years —
and ultimately destroyed the CPI-ML from within. Sanyal speaks of his many differences with Mazumdar. A highlight of the book is the clandestine journey over land via Nepal that Sanyal and three other CPI-ML leaders made to China Mao told them to follow what was suited for Indian conditions and not to blindly ape Chinese methods. Mazumdar refused to pay heed, triggering the beginning of the end of the CPI-ML formed in 1969. When Mazumdar died in 1972, there was nothing left to keep together whatever was left of the CPI-ML. China’s bombastic claims that the Naxal revolt would herald a revolution in India proved to be hollow. By then, Sanyal was in and out of prisons - and a wiser man. In an otherwise excellent book, the author has gone overboard comparing Sanyal with Mahatma Gandhi, calling the Naxalite leader “one of the very few Indians whose life was a message in itself ”. No Naxalite leader should or can ever be compared with the Mahatma. Sanyal himself admits to giving the green signal for revenge killings. Indeed, when one looks back, even the blame for the killings of a large number of bright young men and women who took to Maoist ideology in the 60s and 70s should be blamed on Mazumdar and his lieutenants, Sanyal included. It is a different matter that Sanyal repented much of this later. IANS
The joys of re-reading favourite books Baner-based content writer Mukta Raut names the books that fascinate her

hy go back to a book when there are millions of new ones to read? In an age when we’re so driven to make a day newer than the previous one, why revisit a familiar story? For me, re-reading a favourite book is like going back to a childhood spot for the comfort it offers. It reminds me of time when I was open enough to let something change me. All kinds of re-reading, then, are a kind of a returning. Here are three books that I keep returning to. On Writing: Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King I read this book before I’d read anything else by Books to King. Not only did revisit I love the book, I wanted to commit it to memory. There’s
a lilt to the way it is written. Yes, prima facie it is about how to write. It has tons of superb exercises and discussions on plot, character and dialogue writing. But also, more importantly, it’s about the life of a writer and the lifecycle of his craft – and how there can be no real distinction between the two. (Hence the word ‘Memoir’ in the title, I guess.) As a child, King spent a lot of time being lost in a vacant backyard of some industrial building. T h e s e memories form the setting in ‘Sa lem’s Lot’. His ex per ience of going through substance abuse finds its redemption in another of his books. His first short story of a rabbit (which he wrote at age six or
seven) and his mother’s praise is the green light his writer’s destiny was waiting for. The publishing of ‘Carrie’ is the goalpost for why Stephen King conventions have ‘Long Live the King’ banners today. Despite King being the writer of ‘pulp’, I go back to this book for the nuances – the way he describes how he fell in love with Tabitha over a reading of one of her poems. Or why he wrote when all his days felt like dead ends. Or why he still writes when he doesn’t have to keep writing anymore. On Writing, to me, is a chronicle of how a writer is born, made, and continues to remain. It’s always one melting memory at a time. Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway To me, this story is told in broad strokes. An old man goes to a tavern every day and shucks oysters with other fishermen. He dreams of seal lions. He goes out to the sea one day and catches a fish. The fish struggles. The man struggles. The sea roars and nature plays its part to make life difficult for everyone concerned. And then the narrative quietens. The man senses a kind of nobility in the fish. He observes at one point, ‘there was no panic in his fight.’ There is a transformation that happens when nothing really is happening. It is for this reminder that I go back to this story over and over again. Life is a big thing. But it’s a simple thing too. ‘Old Man and the Sea’ shows me how.

Why fat people tend to overeat
T
riggers such as the smell of popcorn at a movie theatre or a commercial for a snack may have a stronger pull for obese people due to differences in brain chemistry, says a study. Obese people tend to have greater dopamine activity in the habit forming region of the brain than their lean counterparts and lesser dopamine activity in the region controlling rewards, the findings showed. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that helps control the brain’s reward and pleasure centres. These differences could potentially make the obese people more drawn to overeat in response to food triggers and simultaneously make food less rewarding to them.
“Eating based on unconscious habits rather than conscious choices could make it harder to achieve and maintain a healthy
weight, especially when appetizing food cues are practically everywhere,” said lead author Kevin Hall from the National Institutes of Health in the US. The study involved 43 men and women with varying amounts of body fat. Study participants followed the same eating, sleeping and activity schedule. Tendency to overeat in response to triggers in the environment was determined from a detailed questionnaire. Positron emission tomography (PET) scans evaluated the sites in the brain where dopamine was able to act. The study appeared in the journal Molecular Psychiatry. IANS
