‘We are a country of masks’ Deepal Doshi brings Commedia Dell’Arte to the city with the staging of ‘A Tale Of Two Treaties’ Anjali Shetty
About the play A Tale of Two Treaties is a one-man Commedia Dell’Arte show where Deepal Doshi plays 10 different characters in a 70-minute performance. An actor has to master the physical art of transformation through mask and transport the audience into the crazy world of Commedia, where the primal drives of hunger, lust and greed rule the lives of its characters.

M
umbai based actor director and educator Deepal Doshi moved back to India in 2012, after completing a diploma in Grotowsky based Physical Theatre from Vårdinge By Folkhögskola, Sweden and MFA at Dell’Arte International School Of Physical Theatre in California. Commedia Dell’Arte is an Italian form of masked theatre that began in the 16th century. Doshi will present the play ‘A Tale of Two Treaties’, at Arc Asia in Koregaon Park, on Sunday, September 14. Music Matters has organised the event. “We are a country of masks and when I performed Commedia Dell’Arte in Mumbai, people could relate to every character I played,” says Doshi. “We as a society are still in our primal stage and Commedia talks about this. Primal needs cannot be denied as the only thing that changes is manifestation through technology, etc. This form
is characterised by the use of masks, improvisation, physical comedy. and grotesque humour,” says Doshi. He believes that theatre should transcend technique. “Some find A Tale of Two Treaties funny, while some find it inappropriate,” says the 32-year-old. “It is a taxing method as I play 10 characters. I don’t claim to give any message through it. It is an engaging piece devised by me with an experience that will be different.”
For his performance, Deepal trains through swimming, vocal training, music and many forms of exercise to give his best to every performance. “The audience today is aware of what they want and they come in for an experience and not to criticise,” he says. “One needs to understand the rhythm of the audience and acknowledge what they are feeling. The flow of energy has to be equal from the stage onto the audience and vice versa. It is a give-and-take of energies.” anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

Mens Avenue on Laxmi Road stocks apparel in the latest styles and trends for men wanting to upgrade their wardrobes
By Barnalee Handique @ barnalee
S
ubhash Jain launched his original Men’s Avenue store on Laxmi Road in 1996. But a decade later, Jain relocated the specialty men’s apparel outlet to a sprawling 16,000 sq ft venue, bang in the heart of the buzzing Laxmi Road. Mens Avenue is a unique enterprise that deals exclusively in men’s wear and accessories. “Initially, when I started Mens Avenue I didn’t have an idea how the store would take shape. But, I had to do it as it was my father Jivraj Jain’s dream. Since inception, the store has undergone many changes, owing to the demands and needs of the customers have changed changes according to time,” Jain says. Jain’s diligence and efforts have borne rich fruit as Mens Avenue is now established as the premium store of its kind, not just in Pune, but across Maharashtra. He relieved of some responsibility as his 25-year-old son Ankit has recently joined the Mens Avenue operation, and has brought in a fresh, new outlook and a host of ideas. The lavish store is s e t u p
on three floors and stocks the best brands in men’s wear, whether it be formal, semi-formal, western or ethnic wear. Reid & Taylor, Levis, pepe, Allen Solly are among some of the foreign brands, while Raymonds and Zodiac feature in the India-made wear. Elaborating about the store, Jain says, “The store is meant for men only. Today’s men are very conscious of good grooming and their turnout. Our store caters to all their needs. We stock a variety of apparels to suit every occasion, that is priced reasonably to suit everyone’s budget. We also have shirts, trousers and accessories for students and the work class.” Ethnic wear ranges from traditional Maharashtrian dhoti-kurta to pathan suits and jodhpurs, sourced from all across India. Besides there are designer suits, sherwanis and linen wear, in a wide array of material. While the store’s Irish and Italian linen are in great demand, the bridegroom couture and trendy Modi jackets are the current rage. To keep up with the trend, Mens Avenue offers the Modi jacket in a diverse range of colours, materials, styles and patterns, Jain puts forward his suggestions to the duo of the in-house designer, who also are

involved in creating custom wear for the connoisseurs among the store’s large clientele. Mens Avenue is also a treasure house of men’s accessories ranging from ties, caps and turbans to scarves, belts and mojris. Jain has also set up a Mens Avenue branch in Chinchwad. Though it’s for men only, the store also is visited by women shoppers, who are obviously buying the store’s products for their spouses and such. In Jain’s opinion, the urban, city dweller is greatly influenced by what he seen on the TV and movie screens. As result, this is reflected in their choice of apparel and style, which have become very showy and flamboyant. “Everyone wants to look like a TV or movie star and celebrity and we do our best to fulfill our customers’ needs,” says Jain. Kurta-pyjama, party shirts, slim fit trousers, semi-formal shirts and casual wear jackets are musthaves for fashion conscious males, Jain believes. Jain has plans to set up Mens Avenues branches in Hadapsar, Satara Road, Sinhagad Road and Nagar Road in the near future. There are many takers for the Mens Avenue experience and Jain sees many more to join the stream. barnalee.handique@goldensparrow.com

Where’s Magnificent Mary?
Camp resident Anusha Nandkumar’s documentary, ‘The Boxing Ladies’, won the National Award in 2011 for the best film on sports. We got her to watch ‘Mary Kom’ and talk about the issues the biopic glosses over
W
omen in India take up boxing as a means to an end. Coming from poor families, boxing is a viable option for them to secure a government job in the sports quota and to help them rise above their present standard of living. Most of them face opposition at home. They are told to take up a less violent sport; they are cautioned about damaged faces; they are warned that no man would marry a boxer. But these girls persist. It is interesting to discover what makes them go on.
Is it the freedom to hit, an outlet to channelise their frustration and anger? Is it a way to assert themselves and find an identity? The first 10 minutes of Mary Kom raise important issues of sexuality, violence, inner strength vis–a-vis boxing, and then the film conveniently forgets all about it. There is no doubt that Mary Kom is a story that needs to be told. Coming from an insurgentridden and neglected state, choosing boxing to lift her family from abject poverty, becoming a mother at the
peak of her career, and fighting all odds to make a comeback and win the first bronze for India at the Olympics for boxing; is nothing short of a fairy tale. But the film does no justice to ‘Magnificent Mary’, as she is known. Any biopic should be able to draw you into the character’s life. At the end of the film one should feel that they know Mary Kom intimately. Mary Kom is a ‘girlie’ girl at heart. She laughs easily, loves make-up and dressing up and celebrates her womanhood. Yet we come to know none of this. We do not know anything about her boxing style, or even her weight category. Mary Kom has done a lot for Manipuri boxers. She has started a training academy for them and even shelters poor students in her home while they train at the academy. This
28-year-old Anusha Nandkumar’s film traced the lives of three Muslim women from Kolkata’s slums as they became Nationallevel boxers
too is not spoken about in the film. It is the soul and inner strength of Mary Kom that needs to be celebrated, but the film reduces itself to merely chronicling Mary’s life, in a weak manner. It says nothing of the hardships faced by Indian women boxers. There are no facilities for women pugilists, very little prize money, hardly any sponsorships, recognition is hard to come by, and very little respect. They are neglected for the most part and a film like Mary Kom could have been the perfect vehicle for championing their cause. Sadly, the film ends up being a mere soap opera with a forced drama and stereotyped villains.

T
he right amount of fat in your daily food intake is a topic of some controversy. Some fat is required in the diet, and fat (in the form of oil) is also essential for many types of cooking. The FDA recommends that about 30 per cent of calorie intake should be from fat. Some nutritionists recommend that only 10 per cent of a person’s daily calorie intake should come from fat. In cold climates, a diet made up of two-thirds fat is essential. Besides use of oil is also important to know what oil to use in what season and for what dish. Oil content should be low during summer as the body needs to remain cool itself and oily foods take long to digest, make you sweat and can cause diarrhoea. Naturopath Dr Sunita Gupta says, “During winter, the metabolism is very active to keep us warm, and hence it’s easier to digest oily food. In fact, oily food is recommended in winter and sesame oil, ghee and butter should be used. Monsoons bring high humidity, so lighter oils such as olive oil or rice bran oil should be used.” Tips on what oil to use in what season. Summer and monsoon Oils: Rice bran, olive oil, coconut oil Why: Rice bran oil is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids and has cholesterol-lowering properties, due to the presence of a component called oryzanol. It improves insulin resistance and contains Vitamin E. It can be used for deep as well as shallow frying. Coconut oil is known to fight bacteria, build immunity and increase metabolism. It has a bad reputation because of its saturated fats, but these are healthy saturated fats. Coming from the coast, it suits coastal cuisine and climate. It imparts a distinctive flavour too. Olive oil contains anti-oxidants, reduces arthritis pain and is known to lower incidences of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. Its use can prevent heart attacks and strokes. In extra virgin form, it can be used as a dressing for salads. Mustard oil, in moderation, improves digestion and builds appetite. It can prevent cold, cough and skin problems, and eases inflammation. It is neutral and can be used throughout the year. Its strong taste especially complements potato dishes. Winter Oils: Sunflower, sesame, palm, soyabean, ghee, and almond Why: Sunflower oil cardiovascular diseases and free radicals. Its anti-oxidants make it especially beneficial for cancer patients and those suffering from arthritis. It prevents colon cancer, boosts
What’s a smoking point? Each oil has a critical heating point when it starts to break down and smoke. This is when unhealthy compounds are created, not to mention safety hazards (flash fires!) along with an unpleasant, burnt or overcooked taste. Oils with a high smoking point, then, are better for deep frying. Oils should have a higher smoking point than the temperatures you’ll be cooking at. Good quality oils are packed in dark glass bottles or metal containers for a reason — they tend to break down when exposed to light and heat.
the immune system, and promotes proper functioning of the nervous system. It is good for frying. Sesame oil suits diabetics and lowers blood pressure. It also helps oral hygiene by fighting plaque. It prevents atherosclerosis, cancer and depression. It is a source of Vitamin E, magnesium, copper, calcium, iron, zinc, and Vitamin B6. Its polysaturated and unsaturated fats reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) levels in the body. Palm oil is rich in anti-oxidants, carotenes and Vitamin E, which makes it a bit heavy. It’s beneficial for those with Alzheimer’s, arthritis, atherosclerosis and cancer. Soyabean oil is high in poly- and monounsaturated fats and low in saturated fats. It is also contains Omega 3 fatty acids, which reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. It’s high in protein hence suited to use in winter. Soybean oil is mostly used for frying and baking, but can also be used as a condiment for salads. Ghee is a better alternative to butter. It helps digestion, improves brain function and helps in
weight loss when accompanied by exercise. Cow ghee is lighter and better for digestive tracts. Because ghee is clarified butter, it contains only a minimal amount of calcium — 1 milligram per tablespoon. It has a high saturation of Vitamin A and one tablespoon provides 12 and 15 per cent of the recommended daily intake for men and women, respectively. Almond oil helps prevent two main health problems – heart disease and cancer. It improves cholesterol, eases irritable bowel syndrome and protects against colon cancer. Almond oil is given orally to patients who have dryness in their intestinal tracts. Aakanksha Nayyar, a programme associate for public health programmes at Global Health Strategies, tells us how to pick oils according to their function. For Deep Frying Oils: Canola, peanut and grapeseed These have the highest smoke points; we generally deep fry at 350F, and these oils have smoking point of around 450F. They also have a neutral taste, which makes them suitable for frying. For sautéing and pan frying Oils: Regular olive, sunflower and coconut These are generally more neutral-tasting (coconut oil being the exception, which suits curries). They’re usually lighter in colour and don’t change the hue of the dish. For r aw use Oils: Extra virgin olive oil, nut oils such as walnut or hazelnut, and flaxseed oils These are great for salad dressings, or as finishing oil to drizzle on pasta, meats or bread. Here we’re talking about cold-pressed, unfiltered oils, that have a pronounced flavour and generally have a rich colour.

THRILL OF DRIVING
T
Family matters
he Ciaz attempts to retain those customers that Maruti would otherwise lose to the Honda City. Those who sing praises of Maruti’s quality, reliability and massive network but didn’t have a car they would aspire to own. The Ciaz is an all-new car, inside and out, sharing nothing with the SX4. The wheelbase is 2650mm, overall length is 4490mm and width is 1730mm. The figure you should be most interested in, though, is the kerb weight: 1010kg for the petrol and 1105kg for the diesel. The weight of the body in white has gone down by 56kg to 307kg, despite the Ciaz being larger than the SX4 in every way. All this amounts to a good-looking car. All variants get neatly done projector headlamps and while there is more than a passing resemblance to the City from the rear, it is a strikingly attractive car, complemented by big 16-inch wheels on the top ZXi+ variant. Long, low and sleek, the Ciaz is claimed to be Suzuki’s most aerodynamic car. The interiors, while completely new, do feel familiar, while being a bit more upmarket. The top of the dash has a nice soft touch feel to it though the rest of the plastics, particularly the cubbyhole lid and infotainment surrounds are hard and, well, plasticky. Quality and fitfinish are absolutely top-notch though. Equipment on the ZXi+ variant includes leather seats, a properly integrated touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and reverse parking camera, single-zone climate control, keyless entry, rear air con vents and a manually operated rear sun blind. A big deal is the space inside the car, which is significantly more than its rivals. With me sitting comfortably up front, a 5’ 10” colleague could sit at the back and still have nearly 8 inches between his knees and the Verdict seat back. That’s impressive! + Strong engine But I also have one Engine-gearbox criticism. The seats are combo, interior space set too high up. The rear - Ride quality could seat back angle is good, but you feel like you’re be better 0-100kmph time of 11.7 sitting on top of the car, TOD rating seconds is quite good, thanks not within it, and that ;;;32 to a very competitive power-toalso makes for just about weight figure. adequate head room. Shoulder The available diesel is the space is good and the transmission venerable 1.3-litre DDiS (essentially Fiat’s tunnel is almost flat so you can seat MultiJet) that makes 88.8bhp at 4000rpm and three at the back. 200Nm of torque at 1750rpm. While the petrol Though the driver’s seat is heightis just under adequate, the diesel feels wonderful adjustable, you’re sitting too high up and the – the turbo kick at 2000rpm makes it feel far steering adjusts only for height, not reach, so sportier, the claimed 0-100kmph time at 11.3 you never get a perfect driving position. seconds is quicker than the petrol, the gearbox One more thing: The ZXi+ gets twin front action is nicer and, when caned, the engine is airbags and ABS (no ESP). But in the base not that much noisier. And to top it all, it has a versions you don’t get either airbags or ABS claimed fuel efficiency of 26.21kmpl, making it (and the mid variant gets only a driver airbag). the most fuel efficient diesel in the country, bar I feel Maruti, as the undisputed market leader, none! Wow! needs to take a stand and have airbags and ABS For the record, the petrol has a claimed standard on all variants. If Honda can do it… efficiency of 20.73kmpl which also makes it The petrol engine is the same 1.4-litre K14 the most efficient petrol in its class. And it from the Ertiga with 91.2bhp at 6000rpm and gets the option of a 4-speed automatic; the 130Nm of torque at 4000rpm. For a car of this diesel has only the 5-speed manual. size, the 1.4 engine does feel a little inadequate If you’re looking for the Swift’s fun-to-drive and has to be caned to make quick progress on DNA in the Ciaz, you will be disappointed. the highway, which is when it does get a bit This car has been tuned for rear seat comfort noisy as well. That said, for a 1.4, the claimed
The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz takes direct aim at the Honda City. Will it keep customers in the family, Sirish Chandran wonders

and Maruti’s engineers have done a very good job at that. The ride quality is very good as is stability on the highway and the bad sections, the Ciaz took in her stride. Multiple bumps do see the Ciaz bounce about on its springs but overall top marks on the comfort front. Behind the wheel though, the Ciaz lacks zing. The steering is far too vague and disconnected (though there is nothing wrong with the weighting), the soft suspension does lead to roll when pushed hard in corners (though grip is good thanks to 16-inch rubber), the brakes lack that sharp bite, the Ciaz asking why you’re in such a hurry. We expect the range-topping Ciaz to be at Rs 10 lakh for the petrol and Rs 10.5 lakh for the diesel, undercutting the Honda City by roughly 80K. Let’s see how close we get once prices are announced at the launch in midSeptember, but it has to undercut the City! As a fun-to-drive petrol car, the Ciaz is wanting. But with good space, a nice diesel engine, features, efficiency and style, the Ciaz might just have the legs on the Honda. sirish@evo.in

More Karizma
THRILL OF DRIVING Specification: Hero Karizma ZMR Engine Single-cylinder, 223cc, oil-cooled Transmission 5-speed manual Power 19.2bhp @ 8000rpm Torque 19.4Nm @ 6500rpm Weight 154kg 0-100kmph NA Top speed 126kmph (claimed) Price `1,04,988 (ex-showroom, Pune)
Below left: 223cc engine gets a boost upping power to 19.2bhp. Below far left: All-digital clocks house digital speedo and tachometer. Below: Brakes are progressive but could benefit with reduction in bike’s weight
The Karizma has been given a complete makeover but it retains original handling characteristics, says Benjamin Gracias
T
he original Karizma arrived when performance motorcycling in India was coming of age. At a time when 150cc bikes ruled the performance roost, the Karizma was the undisputed king. The game has moved on quite a bit since, with other manufacturers bringing in updated models and new players entering the fray. Hero MotoCorp’s flagship motorcycle has been given a complete makeover to keep up with the times and the current crop of quarter-litre motorcycles. Styling wise, the twin vertically stacked headlamps are flanked by two LED strips with turn indicators neatly integrated in the organically-shaped bodywork. The seats are now two-piece and the rear features a LED tail lamp mounted atop the tail-piece. The design borrows styling cues from the EBR 1190RS, thanks to the association with Erik Buell Racing. Elements like the vertically stacked headlamps, the pointy rear end and the LED tail lamp mounted on the tail piece are reminiscent of the superbike. But the positives for the new Karizma are its size and its long stance, that ensure a striking road presence. The tried and tested engine and suspension set-up from the previous ZMR are carried over. Braking duties are handled by a 276mm disc in the front and 240mm disc at the rear. The all-digital counter sports a tachometer and speedometer. The blacked out exhaust gets two heat shields, quite unnecessary, we think. The fuel-injected 223cc mill puts out 19.2bhp at 8000rpm - a 2bhp increase and
19.4Nm of torque at 6500rpm. The ZMR trades outright power for mid-range poke. The engine is inherently unstressed, making it ideal for long distance cruising. However with the 154kg kerb weight playing spoilsport, it will not set the performance charts on fire. However the low-down torque are a boon for puttering around town. The riding position is sporty and the bike exudes a big-bike feel when you’re once aboard. The clip-ons are set just right. The super-soft seats are large and comfortable. Pillion comfort is also assured, albeit the perch is on the lofty side. Contributing to its touring attributes is the high-set fly-screen which does a good job of deflecting wind blast. The gearbox is notchy but precise. Despite being fuel-injected, there is throttle lag. The long wheelbase and twinshock set-up at the rear translates into a plush ride and sure-footed handling. The bike is very manageable in the city despite its bulk. The non-foldable mirrors could prove a bother in narrow alleys and extreme congestion. Brakes are progressive but could do with more bite.
Going by the predecessors’ performance, the new Karizma should return a fuel efficiency of 25-30kmpl, which is acceptable for its class. Hero has established a reputation as a manufacturer of the most reliable bikes in India, and the earlier Karizmas are a case in point. Expect the new ZMR to be just as reliable. The Karizma ZMR retails for Rs 1.04,988 (ex-showroom, Pune) which is on the expensive side. But for that price you get a full-faired bike with tried and tested, reliable mechanicals. It is also a bike conducive for touring, thanks to its comfortable ride and reassuring stability. benjamin@evo.in

Is sibling rivalry as prevalent as sibling revelry? Anjali Shetty has the clues
Fine tuned
“We cleverly channelled all our energies into music.” — Alexander Fernandes
T
he first memory of your sibling could be either of playing together or attempting to (mock) kill each other. So how does it feel to continue that rivalry or revelry into professional life? Or, what if your sibling has the same job as you but with your competition? Will this generate insecurity or strengthen your bond? Some admit that the situation can get sticky, while others say it brings out the best in both.

“I am more practical and she is extremely emotional.” — Pratik Bendale
FEATURES
An engineered bond
In perfect tune
Alexander & Arthur Fernandes from Wakad Brothers Alexander and Arthur Fernandes are inseparable. Alexander, 33, is founder of Rock Solid Music Academy, while 31-year-old Arthur is co-founder of Music Matters, a company that consuls and manages artistes, and organises drum circles. Alexander is soft-spoken and reserved, while Arthur is outgoing. “I envy his selling talent,” says Alexander. “I love the way he markets his work. I really need to get a hang on that.” Arthur laughs, “He is very good with people and has managed to hold the band, Gospel by The Christbearers, together since 2006. He is the good cop while I am the bad one. He is much better at co-ordination too.” The brothers think that music has dispelled any rivalry. “We stopped fighting way back in school,” says Alexander. “We never really beat up each other. We cleverly channelled all our energies into music and it holds us together.” Arthur joins in, saying, “We both travel a lot and often, we have to substitute for each other in the church choirs. I have been told that Alexander is a better singer than me. But I do not feel jealous or irritated. In fact, I like it and take it as a catalyst to improve myself. You can never know everything, you have to keep learning.” The two founded their gospel band with the aim of glorifying god. They target youth and try to guide them to a spiritual dimension of music.
A bond that clicks
Pratik & Shraddha Bendale from Talegaon Dabhade Twenty-four-year-old Pratik Bendale adores elder sister Shraddha. To him, she is a friend first and then a sister. This admiration led him to follow in her footsteps and become an engineer. A junior software developer, Pratik graduated from Indira College, while 26-year-old Shraddha studied MCA (masters of computer application) from Modern College of Engineering. “I was in Standard X when Shraddha was in the first year of engineering,” says Pratik. “I found every subject fascinating and made up my mind to study engineering too. She was supportive and till date, is my teacher in everything I do.” How does she feel about her brother following her into a profession? She laughs, saying, “It saved us the cost of educational material as he inherited all my books! On a serious note, I was worried when he graduated as
the job market was down. But I used my references to get him a job. It feels nice that your younger brother looks up to you.” Pratik envies Shraddha’s fluency in English. “She is very fluent in the language while I can barely complete a sentence,” he smiles. “I wish I could speak like her. Otherwise, I am more practical and she is extremely emotional. I have to explain the way of life to her many a times.” Knowledge sharing is important for them and it bypasses any professional rivalry. “His logic is better than mine but I have the advantage of experience. Also, he lacks the patience to read or refer. He tries to find all solutions online,” says Shraddha, who dreads the very mention of football. “He is obsessed with football and expects me to watch the matches too. I cannot make head or tail of this game but have to watch it to make him feel good. Another issue now is that since he knows my work timings and profi le, he immediately reports everything at home…”
“Our professional journey has just started so far.” — Mrunmayee Deshpande
Role call
Mrunmayee & Gautami Deshpande from Swargate Hailing from a family of artistes, fi lms and theatre were an obvious option for the Deshpande sisters. The older sister, Mrunmayee, is known for hits such as Kunku, Agnihotra and Pune Via Bihar. Gautami, who is five years younger has recently completed her engineering. She has been dabbling in amateur theatre for a while. “Gayatri’s advice to me is to forgive but don’t forget,” says Mrunmayee. “Our professional journey has just started and we’ve had a great time so far. She comes to Mumbai often as she has started working in commercial theatre now. She is very strong-headed and can be shrewd too. But only towards people who hurt her.” Is having an established actor sister an issue? “I am constantly told that I look, act and speak exactly like Mrunmayee,” says Gautami. “But I take it as a compliment as she is one of the finest actors of her generation. I am completely in awe of her and imitate her completely.” “I am a horrible dancer,” she continues, “and always complain to mom that she only gave Mrunmayee the dancer’s genes.” Mrunmayee laughs off Gautami’s lack of dancing abilities, “We have nicknamed it the crab dance. But she is a great singer and I think she should seriously pursue that as a career.” These two talented girls have long ago crossed over beyond the realm of sibling rivalry. anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

inhagad fort is a towering landmark and a getaway destination for visitors round the year, situated as it is on the outskirts of Pune. During the monsoons, this fort which was built by the great Maratha warrior king Shivaji, takes on an even greater allure. Enveloped in the mornings by a blanket of mist and fog, the rains also have the effect of covering the environs of the fort with lush green vegetation. The towering stature of the fort is very evident when one reaches the foot of the mountain. And to the urban dwellers, being surrounded by the myriad facets of enchanting nature, is also an enlightening experience. Be it the absence of city noise replaced by the gurgling of a water stream, the sounds of birds, the fragrance of wet earth and the emerald greenery. For DINK couples, outsourcing parenthood is cool

or double-income-no-kid (DINK) couples, raising a child is the most difficult part. For them, creches and day-care centres are playing the role of real parents. According to a study, modernday parents feel that outsourcing traditional parental duties is ultimately protecting parenthood. Two to Today, parents are increasingly tango outsourcing care-giving activities. “The expanding array of care-giving services is blurring the boundaries between family and the marketplace and raising new questions contentious decisions,” said authors Amber about what is acceptable to outsource and M. Epp and Sunaina R. Velagaleti, of the how parents make sense of these sometimes University of Wisconsin, Madison.
To better understand the role of the marketplace in modern-day parenting, the authors conducted in-depth interviews with participants. The interviews revealed that parents are more willing to turn to the marketplace for help once they have provided a strong baseline of activities that allow them to direct how care is given, protect their connections as parents, and assert their role as the primary caregiver. “Achieving this balance helps parents maintain their feelings of responsibility, control and intimacy,” Velagaleti said. For instance, when deciding whether or not to hire someone to help plan their child’s birthday party, parents might ask
themselves if it is their job as a parent to do this (responsibility), how they might feel if the party planner does not do things the way they want them to do, and whether or not they should be the person who has created the excitement and joy on their child’s face (intimacy). Understanding this can offer insight for companies looking to better market their services to parents. “Our findings run counter to the widespread idea that family and the local community should always be the first and second lines of parenting help,” Epp noted. The study appeared in the Journal of Consumer Research. IANS
