3 Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal is loving his India experience. Spicy food and a warm weather has prepped the American musician for his gig at Classic Rock Coffee Co
Bumblefoot takes over the stage tonight By Anjali Shetty-Shirsath @shetty_anjali
R
eminiscing his first time on stage, when he was just a 7-yearold, Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal shares how he spent the day cutting up sheets of paper to make cups of confetti for the audience to throw up in the air at the end of the show. “We cut out the letters T-A-R-G-E-T along with a circular target symbol and hung it on the wall behind us. We were doing everything right. We wrote our own songs, and played our hearts out,” grins Ron, thanking his stars that he doesn’t have to spend time making confetti anymore. Inspiration comes from life experiences that have a personal impact, believes Ron. “We all Creative have stories to tell and I try to share mine the best way I can pursuits - through songs,” he adds. The musician will be collaborating with Blackstratblues, Siddharth Basrur and Shazneed Arethna at Classic Rock Coffee Co’s maiden gig tonight. “We’ll be doing lots of classic rock songs, some Guns n Roses classics, and I’ll be playing a few songs off the Little Brother Is Watching album,” says Ron, as he enlists reasons you should book a table soon. The performance is part of Gearhouse Sessions’ tie-up with the coffee shop to present live
acts every week at the venue. “It’s not what you normally think of when you think coffee shop,” explains Ron, while talking about the ‘coffee shop’s’ concept, “This place is like a big playground for people who love rock memorabilia, rock concerts, great food and drinks.” Apart from the interesting performance venue, local indie artistes have also caught Ron’s attention. He is impressed with the talented and authentic musicians he has heard while he’s been here. As always, though, he finds himself hoping indie musicians would find more support. “Anywhere I’ve been in the world, I’ve said, they deserve more support. You can find just as much talent, passion and energy from bands on the local stage as you do on the international stage. Don’t miss out on what your local artistes have to offer.” While the musician is in the city, he is doing his bit to help social organisations that, he thinks, are adding value to the society. As a matter of fact, Ron has been rather generous with charities over the years. “It happened organically, you meet someone, they’re involved, you’re inspired and you get involved. One of the most important things you can do, as a musician, is to motivate people to come together and make a positive change. Making music can be used for a greater good and I try to do this all

They’ve built over 1,000 schools and, a few days ago, I visited one of the construction sites in Urse, Talegaon.” If the stage did not call out to the 45-year-old rockstar ever so often, he believes he would still be involved with creative pursuits. He was a semiprofessional photographer and used to teach photography to high school students, 20 years ago. Even earlier, as a 12-year-old, Ron remembers painting on canvas and upgrading dungarees and jackets with his works for $20, each. The money saved up was used to buy music gear. Later, Ron had the option to choosing architecture to earn his living since he loves to “build things, mathematics, geometry, design, and home renovation” That’s not it, the guitarist also saw himself as a teacher for a while, “Over ten years ago, I was Professor Bumblefoot at SUNY Purchase College, New York, teaching music production, before the touring got too heavy to continue teaching. I still love to teach, conduct workshops and visit schools whenever I can.” Catch Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal live at Classic Rock Coffee Co, Kalyani Nagar; Time: 8 pm onwards

In the mood for Hindi-Urdu Rock? By Zainab Kantawala @kantawalazainab

f you are looking for a fresh sound, then you must checkout Mannfarid, a progressive alternative rock band that plays songs peppered with Urdu lyrics. The band’s sound is a combination of melody blended with heavy rock elements. The interesting bit about Mannfarid is that they play only original tracks. “The name Mannfarid is derived from Urdu word Munfarid, which means unique. Mann is a Hindi word for soul, heart or thoughts. So, by virtue of the inimitable style of our music, we named our band Mannfarid. It’s our effort to stand by our name and create original music, yet be very different,” says Lakshya Bhatnagar, vocalist. Apart from Lakshya, the band comprises
of Kirit Mandavgane and Onkar Tarkase on lead guitars, Elvis Massey on drums and Amit Gadgil, on bass. Their sound is a combination of melody and heavy rock elements. They have participated in multiple rock competitions and have featured in over thirty performances. “We aim to create a fresh sound that has a traditional and desi feel. We have diversified from English themes to Hindi ideas, while enhancing the sound of the band. We want to present rock music in our own language,” adds Lakhya. Mannfarid thrives to make original music in a typical Hindi alternate rock segment. Their debut single, Hoslo Ke Paro Mein, won the Best Song award at the VIMA Music Awards. The number came out tops among 700 entries from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. “The song talks about believing in your

dreams. Struggles and hardships might come along, but there would always be a light at the end of the tunnel. The song reflects the state of mind of every individual, who aspires to take the road less travelled,” says Onkar. The band is currently working on their debut album. Three songs - Fateh Ho, Hoslo Ke Paro Mein, and Gumraah - are already out on the internet and are receiving a positive response. The encouragement helps the band harness ideas for their songs, especially Urdu numbers. Lakshya says, “It is challenging to compose music and making a mark in the circuit. We want our music to gain a mass appeal. As a team, we ideate and try to create new music. While there are many fans of English Rock, it’s our belief that Rock music can make a statement in Hindi, or Urdu, too. People relate with our songs because connect
with their own language. The VIMA Award has proved that we are making a mark.” Like most indie musicians, members of Mannfarid also mourn the dominance of Bollywood music. Yet, they believe the audience in Pune is mature and appreciates good music. The band’s drummer, Elvis, explains, “We think Pune has really matured towards the independent music scene and there are good amount of indie music listeners. Pune audiences are very receptive to good music. But the sad truth is Bollywood music continues to dominate the music scene. The local crowd is still conducive to live shows. Plus, there are quite a few venues that facilitate live gigs.” Check out the band’s music on https:// soundcloud.com/mannfarid zainab.kantawala@goldensparrow.com
The play gives a lowdown on how urbanisation is impacting our lives. Everybody talks about infrastructure but nobody is paying attention towards decreasing agricultural land,” says Romi Jaspal, one of the actors in the play. Pramod’s theatre journey has been rather long and memorable. He has acted in over a dozen theatre productions while working with notable directors like Sunil Shanbag, playwright Ramu Ramanathan and the late Satyadev Dubey. Pramod has also written and directed eight short films and acted in eight feature films. This is Kathakar’s first performance in the city. The play features actors Bhupesh Singh, Akkash Basnet and Neha Chauhan, apart from Jaspal, in the cast.
Oka Boka Tiloka also includes live folk song performances. “It took me a year to complete the play. It took a lot of research and improvisation. I wanted it to be perfect,” says Pramod. Proceeds from the play will go to Nityaasha Foundation, an initiative that provides free medical aid and support to children from economically weak families suffering from Type I Diabetes and Epilepsy. feedback.tgs@goldensparrow.com

The troupe brings its maiden performance to the city this weekend, in association with Gyaan Adab, for the benefit of Nityaasha Foundation. Kathakar’s Oka Boka Tiloka traces how a simple world is turned complex because of urbanisation. Conveniently, for theatre director Pramod Pathak, the three lead characters of his play are swayed out of their beautiful reverie by a woman in need of their help. Until the damsel-in-distress’ arrival, the three able men lived ‘a simple life in the lap of nature, in a beautiful place nestled amidst the mountains.’ The similarity to the Forbidden Fruit story continues
until one of the men moves to the real world and returns to convince the others to do the same. Not concerning itself much on matters of morality, Oka Boka Triloka remains a bitter-sweet musical, which portrays the impact of development and modernisation on the environment. “I had the concept in my mind for many years. There have been many instances where farmers’ lands are being taken away in the name of development and industry. They have no choice but to accept what authorities offer in exchange for their land and water. I wanted to explore how they deal with the rapidly changing world. The play features people, who are living a stress-free and simple rural life, but are forced to move from a rural to urban scenario,” explains Pramod. The story explores the plight of these people, who become strangers in their own land and have to move out in search of a new place. “I am playing a character of a villager who has lived a simple life. But after getting taste of the other world, wants the urban life.

Singletons from the city have a harrowing time hunting for a house on rent as most societies put them in the same bracket as stray dogs and hawkers. They are now slowly but steadily grouping up and coming up with ways to battle the tanashahi By Zainab Kantawala and Rajil Menon @kantawalazainab and @RajilMenon
I
t is not difficult to spot ‘Bachelors not allowed’ boards outside housing societies across Pune and neighbouring suburbs. Almost every second society here has the rule. While some prominently display it to dissuade real estate agents and singletons, there are some who sternly inform home seekers that they will not allow bachelors or spinsters at any cost. With the number of such societies on the rise, singletons working in the growing IT industry, student community, among others are having a tough time finding a roof above their heads. Sharing, not just to save money but also the hassle of looking for multiple houses, is one of the easiest routes taken by most singletons. Fighting back is another trend that fast picking up. The helpless youth are now arming themselves with rule book which clearly states that discrimination is not just unconstitutional but also nothing short of extortion. Aggrieved by the decision of housing societies in Pune that bars single men and women from renting apartments, bachelors and spinsters are now coming together to raise a united front to counter the unlawful ban and bias and to find a viable solution to the problem. Some have taken to social media to share ideas, while there are those who are organising meetings to tackle the menace from managing committees of various housing societies. Farrukh Khan, who is used to the outright rejection whenever she has looked for a house on lease, says, “Being single is the biggest disadvantage if you are looking to rent a house in Pune. This is because most housing societies disallow their members from leasing their properties to bachelors. So,
even if the owner wants to give it on rent to a group of singles, the housing society won’t give him a no-objection certificate (NOC). But thankfully I am now staying at NIBM, and my society here has no such issues.” Despite being a well-qualified media professional without any criminal history, she has been refused rental accommodation by most housing societies. But can a housing society bar its members from letting out their flats to bachelors or spinsters? According to the Maharashtra Co-operative Societies Act of 1960, if you are living in a housing society, then the society is in charge of making laws that govern members who are living there. However, the housing society regulations don’t have the same stature as that of a law. Every Indian citizen has the right to reside anywhere in the country and discrimination is not allowed on the basis of religion, caste, sex, eating habits or marital status. So, if a tenant feels a housing society has not been fair, he can always file a police complaint against it, claiming violation of his rights as a citizen. If the owner of a flat has no objection in renting his/her flat to a bachelor, the society cannot have any objection. “My housing society in Pimple Saudagar has forwarded a circular that henceforth they won’t allow bachelor tenants in any apartment, as some of them are causing problems to some of the residents. My question is, can a society really discriminate on the basis of marital status and decide on which type of tenants are allowed? Everyone in the building thinks that bachelors only drink, smoke and party, and so they don’t want us here. But the truth is we don’t bother anyone,” says Husain Pothiwala, who is a student. Now these ‘unwanted’ bachelors and spinsters, or single men and women have taken to online signature petitions and other social media to raise the issue. These victims of the housing society taboo are also giving vent to their frustration on Facebook. Some of them have been deliberating about holding protest marches in areas where societies just do not allow singletons. On the Facebook page ‘Flats Without Brokers in Pune’ they have been deliberating about getting all the facts in place and then organising protest marches. Naushi Samad, a member of the group states, “If they want a bachelor-free society, then can we have a society where families are not allowed? There are so many families who recklessly leave their children to loiter around and play on the driveways, thus causing a serious safety hazard. We also don’t complain when their infants keep wailing at nights, leaving
others awake, but they sure have lots of issues when we listen to music, even if it’s within permissible limits.” The housing society opposition to singles stems from the feeling that such a group is likely to cause regular disturbance and disrupt the family-oriented ambience of the residential complexes. Therefore, it is decided at society meetings to not rent out flats to singletons, and then this is made into a law. That said, there is also the stray case of a single misbehaving or making a nuisance on the society premises, and the consequent complaints from other residents that force them to take action, and then flats are rented out to only families thereafter. But does that justify making every singleton suffer for the misdoing of a few? Shantanu S Parthe Shantanu S Parthe, 17, is the son of a teacher, who is studying in Wadia College in the 11th standard. “I’m from Panchgani where there are only two Marathi colleges. My only options are Mumbai or Pune for English education. During my online admission process I was going to Wadia College and was forced to stay with a friend. We used to hunt for flats in our spare time and had to face rejections because I am a bachelor. My grades have gone down from 84 to 64 percent now because I don’t get accommodation in a decent place. Flats for bachelors are costly,” said Shantanu

Mukesh Soni Mukesh Soni, a businessman who hails from Rajasthan, has been staying at the Palace Orchard housing society since 2011. Five months ago the society came up with a rule not to allow bachelors in the society. “I also know of a flat in the Lords Lake society, where a good 1450 square feet flat is lying vacant for want of a tenant, as the owner is not able to rent it out to bachelors. Many bachelors have approached him but the owner is hesitant because the society will create problems. “When we are legal tenants, have made agreements and have also got police clearance, how can the society ask us to leave?” asks Soni. The owners don’t want any legal issues to come up, so they are hesitant. Most houses are like an investment or second homes, so they residie out of town, in Mumbai, Delhi etc. The society has sent a letter saying they will fine the owner Rs 10,000 for keeping bachelors, but the rule book says the maximum fine that can be levied is 10 per cent of the maintenance charges.
Features Sachin Singh Sachin Singh, 25, works with a bank.“I have stayed in this society for five to six years but this new law and the society’s notice that we are illegal tenants have disturbed us. The owner had to get some ownership documents signed by the society, so he layed along with the society and asked us to sign a document, that we will be removed from this society since we are bachelors. We had to sign it,” he says. “I had heard of these issues in the past but had not thought I would face such problems. The society pressurised the owner, the owner pressurised us, and we had to sign. What else could we do?” he says.
Tanuja Ranganathan Tanuja Ranganathan, a physiotherapist from Delhi, trained with Hansraj, who was the physiotherapist for the Indian cricket team. Tanuja has now moved to Pune. She has had to spend her savings on hotels “For a month, I had to pay Rs 3000 per day, while I was searching for a house. I was told at every society that I will not be given a house on rent because I am single. When I found a room at the Raheja Garden in Wanowrie, the owner and the society charged me a premium for many things and gave me a flat with lots of small problems. They took Rs 1,000 as contingency charges. The worst part is that the society had objected at the last moment. The society was asking the owner not to allow singletons to stay and I was asked by society members and the flat owner to say that one of my friends was my fiancé, and technically I am not single. I had to give in to their demands and it was a very embarrassing situation for us,” said Tanuja. Snehal Raut Snehal Raut, 25, came to Pune with her younger brother to start her own boutique. “I have to look at bigger societies as options because I have to take care of my brother and my security. Though I’m going to stay with my brother, the big societies have refused me accommodation. I had to go to my native place Nagpur for a family emergency. I have to come back to Pune and continue our search for accommodation,” she says.
Society speak
Ravindra Bhambre, Mithras Park, Pimple Saudagar “The society feels that a group of singles is likely to mess up the place and create a nuisance for other society members. They make a lot of noise and indulge in drinking and smoking too. Many youngsters are extremely arrogant. We have faced a lot of trouble in the past. A few months back, a flat was rented to a girl. Some of her men friends visiting her place refused to park their bikes in a section allotted to visitors. They were under the influence of alcohol, and when the security guard intervened, they bashed him up badly. After that the society members decided to stop bachelors from renting the flats.”
Deepak Salvi, Chairman of Sarita Sangam Society, Kasarwadi “The bachelors create a lot of nuisance, whether it be late night
partying, smoking or drinking late at night, and disturbing the neighbours who have their families and morning jobs to worry about. While I personally don’t see anything against renting out flats to bachelors, many residents in our society are of the belief that single men, or women, create disruptions. They might bring their boyfriends or girlfriends over, something that members don’t want their children to be exposed to. Also there have been instances in the past, because of which the society had to face a lot of trouble. It was found that one of the accused of the JM Road blast two years back, was residing here. The residents had to go through a lot of police inquiries and a lot of inconvenience. Once a bachelor created a lot of ruckus under the influence of drugs. Since then we have stopped giving flats to bachelors.”
Suraj Chalke, Chairman, Kailash Society, Kothrud “Renting out flats to bachelors leads to several problems. When we rent out flats to a group of people, some of them move out due to job changes. This creates a lot of hassles as we draw up agreements. Also a number of youngsters are in live-in relationships these days. There have been instances of inadequately dressed females and males gathering in the open area of the society at odd hours. All these are bad influences on the children. They play loud music and party till late hours and disturb other residents.”

When
love
comes knocking Leaving behind traditional customs, young couples are getting more creative when it comes to expressing their commitment to each other

he days of getting down on one knee to express feelings of love and affection almost seem primitive now that more and more couples spend time planning the nitty-gritty of a proposal. Grand gestures are getting bigger and so is the surprise (read, shock) value. Friends and family members often step in to help the knight in shining armour charm his damsel. Clearly, a crazy proposal makes for the best chai time conversation starter. These conversations, of course, come with their own ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ inducing powers, so we suggest you surround yourself with gullible hearts as you read on.
Love in the time of MBA classes
College libraries seem to provide a healthy environment for love to prosper. Sanchia Ribeiro and Calvin Symss’ love story would surely have been poorer without college library. “Calvin and I had been dating for about two years while we were still in college, pursuing our management degrees. He was a senior and he knew that I picked up the same set of reference books from the library every day. As a routine, I headed to the library to pick up my books. When I turned the pages, I found a note that said, I Love You, on a chit. I returned the book thinking the message was for someone else. When I picked another book, I found a chit again and this continued to happen with every book I picked up. By this time everyone in the library was staring at me,” recalls Sanchia. This is as romantic as a library can possibly get. When Sanchia finally stepped out of the library she found Calvin waiting for her, “Calvin was standing right there with a rose in his hands. Instantly, all the anger disappeared and before he could say anything I said yes!”

Booked by love
An aspiring film director, Chetan Jadhav knew he had to do something different to express his love for Nikita Sharma. She was the one who encouraged Chetan through every important decision of his life. He wanted the proposal to be memorable and something they could cherish later too. “I decided to publish a 26-page collage book and place it in a cafe that we often visited. The book had a note of everything - from the day we met to the trips we took to why I love her. The idea was to pen down my thoughts as I am not a very expressive person,” says Chetan. Nikita instantly loved the gesture. “I am an introvert and rarely talk. She wasn’t expecting this kind of display from me. She was thrilled and till date flaunts the book,” laughs Chetan. The couple plans to marry soon.

Anujeet Majumdar and Vidya Rao
Anujeet Majumdar, a content specialist, is capable of endlessly talking about how much he loves Vidya Rao. The two have been together for four years and will tie the knot in December. “When I first told Vidya how I felt about her, she brushed it off saying that I was too young and not in the right frame of mind to take a serious decision. This was at her favourite French restaurant in Colaba, Mumbai. So I decided that this would be the very place where I would propose marriage. But I wanted it to be a grand and memorable event. My friend, who is a choreographer, suggested a flash mob with people she knew. Every girl wants her friends and close people to be around when she is being proposed to, I was told,” recalls Anujeet After a few weeks of planning, Anujeet booked the first floor of the restaurant, luckily his friend worked there. “My friend choreographed a sequence wherein the dancers were in disguise as waiters and customers. I staged a fight with the waiter, who broke into an impromptu jig, and I joined in. I went down on my knee and popped the question. Vidya was thrilled to bits,” smiles Anujeet.

Delhi Metro gets a loving feeling
There are love stories where people go to extreme lengths to win over their loved ones. Tanya Young and Nicana David’s story is similar. Tanya, a human resource professional, and Nicana, who works on an oil rig, had been dating for nearly two years when the marriage proposal was popped. Tanya recalls, “A week before the proposal, we had an argument and were not talking to each other. We had gone to Delhi to attend one a friend’s wedding. After the wedding, I headed out to metro station with a few friends. Everybody was behaving a little bizarre. They were wishing Nic good luck and giggling amongst themselves. I was clueless and anxious but I pretended that I didn’t care because I was also upset. After a while all my friends started excusing themselves, leaving me all alone. I knew something was amiss. Suddenly, I see Nic down on his knees with a ring in his hand. I remember what he said to date, “I can’t imagine my life without you even for a day, will you be mine forever?” I was shocked!” Orchestrating a surprise wedding proposal is one of the sweetest things you can do, but as with any well-intentioned plot, things can go a tad overboard too. “I was very aware that there was a lot of staring and glaring happening by the commuters. But then I realised that this was my moment. We didn’t care about what other people thought,” says Tanya.
Rachit and Anika Verma
The McDreamy proposal
Fine, Dr McDreamy proposed to Meredith Grey in a hospital elevator but remember the episode when Dr Grey etched the boundaries of their dream home with candles? That’s pretty much how Rachit Verma proposed to his then-girlfriend Anika. A clueless and rather unwell Anika was dragged out of her home by her sister to make Rachit’s plan a success. “It was about a year ago. My sister asked me to get ready. After reaching the gate of our home, she blindfolded me with her scarf and pushed me inside her car. I had no clue what was going on. She simply asked me to relax and the car drove off.” When the car stopped, the driver (Rachit’s friend) and Anika’s sister took her through a flight of stairs. “I was clueless and petrified. I was still blindfolded thinking I had been kidnapped, despite my sister’s presence. Then I heard a voice asking, ‘Will you marry me?’ Someone slowly took off my blindfold. I saw Rachit sitting inside a huge circle of lit candles on the terrace with our friends recording it all. He had a ring in his hand,” says Anika, still excited by the memory. Rachit’s proposal to his ladylove is indeed rather dreamy and he chose the perfect setting to declare his love. “It was a magical moment for me. I was stunned and it took me a while to believe that it was happening for real. Obviously I said yes and now we are happily married,” says Anika.

Kiss of Love
Kirtan and Twashti
Kirtan and Twashti knew each other from the time they were in the same school. As teenagers, sharing the same school bench with the opposite sex can either make you hate your ‘partner’ until you pass out of school or love each other until the end of time. Kirtan, a final year engineering student, has known Twasthi since they were 13. “We were best friends but she was seeing a moron at the time. He didn’t treat her right. One day, we were in a garden and Twasthi was on a call with him. She was crying and she suddenly stormed out. She returned in 10 minutes and kissed me passionately. I was stunned but I mustered courage to kiss her back. Everyone was staring at us but it made no difference. We were in each others’ arms and we were loving every bit of it,” smiles Kirtan as he recalls the date, August 3, and time, 4.30 pm, of his first kiss precisely. The couple is deeply and madly in love and it shows, “She understands me well. There is nothing I can hide from her. It is fun to have her in my life.’

Style soared when it poured By Manasi Shroff
Shirt, trousers, shoes, belt - Zara
It was a day that called for a romantic drive all the way to Lonavala. With the weather turning cosy thanks to overcast skies, the party scene took on a special mood too. At the Oak Lounge, Koregaon Park, the girls were treated to drinks on the house, while the guys tried their best not to be left behind. Footwear designer, Aishini Zaveri, who’s launched her own shoe brand, portrayed thorough class. With a perfectly balanced grey and black combination, the lady grabbed eyeballs as she enjoyed the evening with her girl gang. A black drop shoulder top and a grey slim pencil skirt set Aishini’s look apart. She nailed the look with a pair of strappy heels and accesso-
rised with a black neckpiece and a velvet box clutch. A guy sporting a white linen shirt and beige trousers wouldn’t usually make the best dressed list anywhere. But Aziz Anna’s nonchalance only bought him more style points. As the casting director stood by the bar, nursing his drink and tapping his feet to the music, it was hard to miss his statement geek-framed eyewear. With that one standout accessory, Aziz drew our attention. The well-fitting shirt and basic choice of colour finally sealed the deal. Aziz might call himself a lazy shopper but he certainly has a keen eye when it comes to putting together a look. A brown belt and a pair of casual canvas shoes completed the semi-casual attire.
