The voice behind an imaginary bear, Paddington
I am very simple: Ranveer Singh
British actor Ben Whishaw shares his experience on giving his voice to an imaginary bear in the film, ‘Paddington’ By Yash Daiv @yash009
Q. Tell us something about your character; Paddington? A. I am the voice behind Paddington bear. It is a big deal stepping into the shoes — or rather paws — of the great Paddington Bear. I had imagined I’d just be putting my voice to something but the team actually filmed my face and mouth and took footage of my movements so there was a blending of me and the bear. I tried a few different things with my voice and over time realised that it should sound like I do in real life. Q. Is there any city or place that has intimidated you or has been completely different from what you had thought? If yes, in what way? A. Not really, Moving to different cities is an experience in itself. It all about adapting to new place and just enjoying the moment where you are. Q. What is the best element of the film for you? A. I think the movie itself is a special for me. I was much unknown about Paddington and his popularity. His cuddliness, his optimistic and cheerful behaviour keeps everyone on their toes all the time.
Q. What kind of homework did you do to voice an imaginary bear? A. The thing about voice is that, the more I tried to do something other than my voice, the less it worked. So I ended up voicing Paddington as myself. I didn’t expect that to be the case, but it was. At first, I thought he is young and should have higher, childlike voice, but that didn’t work, because he’s a bear and has to have some quality that sounds vaguely and beary.
Q. From playing Q in thriller Bond films to voicing Paddington, a cuddly bear — how do you get into the drastically different characters? A. I handled the most sophisticated gadgets on the set of Skyfall, it has taken me a while to find my feet on Paddington because of the complex process of marrying his voice to the computer-generated bear. But it was fun and working with a big stars like Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, and Nicole Kidman. Paul King and David Heyman are very motivating and kept encouraging me to do better for this role. yashdaiv@gmail.com
Q. How do you think the audience is going to react to Paddington? A. It is already creating a lot of buzz. I am pretty sure; people will love Paddington and his Hollywood cute tricks on the big diaries screen.
Ranveer Singh has played a conman and a thief on the big screen, but the Bollywood’s sought-after actor describes himself as a simple person, who doesn’t cheat or lie. Asked how innocent he is in real life, he said: “I am not a cheat or a liar. I am very simple. I find excitement in my work and do it honestly. I don’t like negativity, manipulation and politics. So, I stay very far from them.” “I’m blessed that I get an opportunity to do what I love for a living. I feel that you should approach life positively.” “Whenever I have done bad to anyone or betrayed anyone, the only person who suffers is me. It eats me from inside, so I have realised you should not wrong anybody. I choose to live an honest and clean life,” he added. His latest film Kill Dil, also featuring Govinda, Ali Zafar and Parineeti Chopra, released Friday. IANS

here are some strong similarities between last week’s Keenu Reaves’ John Wick and Denzel Washington’s character in The Equalizer. Like Keenu Reaves, Washington plays a man with a mysterious and deliberately cryptic past that involves a dead wife and an incident that revives his inner, baser instinct. But unlike John Wick, this is not a tale of revenge. Instead, its premise is strongly reminiscent of the February 2014 released Liam Neeson’s Taken. It is the tale of a man with a very particular set of skills who decides to balance injustice and exploitation by

First written as Belle et la Bete by French novelist Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont in 1756, there have been many variants of the original in literature, television, stage and films. THRILL OF DRIVING
Hero had given its new Splendor an adventurous cafe racer aura. How practical is it in the context of the Indian commuter arena, wonders Benjamin Gracias
T
he new Splendor Pro Classic is Hero Motocorp’s most adventurous mass motorcycle. Think about it — a 100cc cafe racer for the aam aadmi! The question then is, how cool is Hero’s take on the cafe racer? The motorcycle sports mechanicals and cycle parts from the Splendor. The engine is the same 97.2cc air-cooled single in the Splendor series of motorcycles. The headlamp is new, while the chrome mudguards seem to be from an earlier generation of the CD Dawn. The one piece handlebar, chrome mirrors, single seat and rear cowl are the new bits. This bike is sure to catch the fancy of those who like splashes of chrome. It seems to sit lowered thanks to the oversized seat cowl, and this low set stance is enhanced by the skinny rear tyre. The bodywork is minimal and the pinstripe graphics gel well with the chrome. Overall, the design is pleasing and despite the small dimensions, the bike will manage to turn heads, especially among others of the commuter ilk. Clip-ons are ditched in favour of a clubman type one-piece handlebar that makes for a mildly aggressive riding position. The round chrome rear-view mirrors are easy to adjust and dispense a wide field of vision. The soft-padded seat is roomy enough to accommodate bigger sized riders, but remember, this is a single-seater and therefore it does not even have rear footpegs.
The switches, carried over from the Splendor, are awkwardly placed ergonomically and using them, especially the pass-light switch, is quite a chore. The tail piece is prone to rattle but that said, the rider is insulated from vibrations, even at high speeds. The Pro Classic features the tried and tested 97.2cc mill in the same state of tune as all the bikes from the Splendor family. Tuned for efficiency, this mill generates decent grunt at low revs, which is good enough for puttering around town. The difference in kerb weight however isn’t enough to improve acceleration, and the bike may have its hands full to keep up with the current crop of 110cc bikes. We expected the bike to feature a mildly tuned engine but in vain. Leave alone ton up speeds, the Pro Classic will not get to 100kmph. The riding position is awkward, to say the least. Thanks to the handlebar, the rider is in a kind of crouch, but without rearset footpegs, the cafe racer stance is never fully attained. The lifted-off-the-Splendor pegs just don’t feel right in this regard. The Splendor Pro Classic then is fine for short hauls but with the riding stance, longer riders are sure to prove uncomfortable, and the soft padding of the seats doesn’t improve matters. It is a light and nimble bike, and fairly easy to navigate, but the heel and toe action is not really conducive to quick shifts. The tyres fail to inspire confidence around corners. The drum brake set-up works well enough, but a front disc brake would be far better. Given

Fuel efficiency has been the Splendor’s forte, and we expect the Pro Classic to live up to and fulfil expectations priced motorcycle that will stand out in the crowd, that pays homage to the cafe racer concept but without their exorbitant price tags or high maintenance with this class of motorcycle, the new Hero Splendor Pro Classic does make a valid claim for itself. It costs a little more than the regular Splendor but makes up for the premium with an eyecatching demeanour. The downside is that it imitates the aura without backing it up with an authentic cafe racer feel and experience. As a result, the new Hero Splendor Pro Classic remains a sketchy and cost effective replica of the real thing, more cutting chai than a high class, refined brew. That said, Hero deserves a big hurrah for trying to infuse a new edge of excitement into the humdrum 100cc segment. The little Splendor Pro Classic has been left bereft of the cred it would take to rate as a cafe racer. And the single seat robs it of the practicality that is second nature for a motorcycle of this price and category. It will remain to be seen how the Indian commuter buyer takes to Hero’s mass market take on the iconic cafe racer. benjamin@evo.in
Left: Seat hump looks massive especially when viewed from the rear Below: Compared to a regular Splendor, the Pro Classic looks lowered and compact.

How to host talk of the town
parties Winter is party time and you need to know how to host the most hot and happening dos in town. Anjali Shetty shares the details
O
nce upon a time, good food, great music and a decently decorated venue would ensure that you were the host with the most, of the town. Not any more. Today if you want your party to be the talk-of-the-town, then LED-themed decor, photo booths, hot air balloons etc are what you must have. We have compiled a list of what you need to be counted as a hit host among the city’s party people. Photo booth, a hot, new trend on the party circuit, is as the name suggests, a closed off area, with handy props for you to don, to shoot fantastic pictures. Varun Mukhi of Shutterbug photos, a photo booth pioneer, says, "The demand for photo booths is increasing by the day. It is a most popular trend at corporate,

college events and weddings. The photo booth has props like hats, wigs, glasses and placards about the occasion. Customised placards and props are great to personalise the event. The photographs are given to the guests immediately as souvenirs. Avinash Panicker of Karma Digital, specialises in electronic trance music parties. The decor and theme are created with UV lights. "It depends on the type of music or DJ. The decor involves lycra, shiny threads and materials that give out bling. People in the city are well travelled and aware of what the world is offering so one has to provide the best. The guests today expect more than the usual," says Avinash.

Must-haves: 1. LED balloon 2. Sky lanterns 3. LED color changing table clock 4. Pocket LED lamp 5. Glow stick 6. Mushroom LED night lamp 7. Flashing LED shutter
Topnotch Entertainment and Caprice Enterprises turn regular balloons into illuminated glowing spheres, filled with air or helium, in static or flashing modes. You can also organise hot air balloon flights. Jayant Dofey of 29028 Adventure World says, "We provide controlled flights by hot air balloons if the criteria of wind condition, ground distance and landing space is met. The rate for controlled flights is Rs 1,000 per head and we require at least a 100 people per day. We organise one-hour flights subject to wind conditions and location landing."
Party themes Geetika Chattpar, of Pyjama Party, says, "The first and the foremost aspect while planning a party is your budget. Once that is decided, the next step is to zero in on a theme. Theme parties are popular and the hottest theme right now among kids and adults alike is Game of thrones. Name your drinks after the characters in the game. Themes add an extra zing to a party. Make sure you have all the supplies and arrangements needed for the theme. The three things that make or break a party are drinks, food and most importantly, music. “Even a party without a theme can be fun. You can improvise in case of delays or insufficiency. A lot of people get upset over decor, but that is easy when you have a clear idea. You don't want

your house to look like a fairy tale. So keep it simple, unless your theme demands an over-the-top arrangement.
DJ Music at house parties is easy to choose because you know exactly who you are catering for. You know the guests and know exactly what they expect. Bollywood is the safest bet at any given house party since it is familiar. It's the best way to get a party started. For the first few hours don't play heavy music as the guests are settling down or walking in. Do not play unfamiliar music genres as you don't want them leaving the dance floor. A winter theme party could comprise anything from a winter wonderland with fairies and elves and santa claus on the higher scale to something as simple as putting up cotton everywhere and making it a snowy evening! anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com
1. White party: Set the tone with white, silver and black. Arrange for a stylish cocktail party, twinkling lights for a stylish atmosphere. Keep the dress code bright and colourful. 2. Sports Party: A winter sports theme party will make you a hit in your neighbourhood. After a fun-time on the ground head home to warm up with hot cocoa and fresh cookies. A make-shift ice-skating ring is also an option.
3. Food on coal: Gather the grill, some burgers for a barbeque. This is a popular way to celebrate winter. 4. Food-theme party: Pick a theme, for example, Game of Thrones. Now, set your menu as per the characters and plots of the various seasons. Let the colours and textures of the dishes replicate the theme.

Boat shoes are traditionally worn without socks. Modern boat shoes were invented in 1935 by Paul Sperry after noticing his dog’s ability to run easily over ice without slipping. Using a knife, he cut siping into his shoes’ soles, inspiring a shoe perfect for boating and a company called Sperry Top-Sider. Sperry Top-Sidersare still a popular brand of boat shoe today, among many others, including Sebago and Timbeland Boat shoes are used by sailors, as the name suggests; however, since the 1980s they have become fashionable footwear in North America, Argentina, China, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy and the UK. Some boat shoes today have traditional white, nonmarking soles, though many others today have dark
