Swara Bhaskar is known for her excellent acting skills right from her debut. Apart from her proven performance skills, Swara has shown her ability to multi task with flair this year. So far, it’s her busiest year as an actor. In an industry where actresses have often found it a struggle to find adequate opportunities, she is juggling two films in two ends of Mumbai with ease. She is currently shooting for Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, with Salman Khan and is dubbing for a just completed new project. The month has been hectic. Says Swara, “Indeed, this month has been crazy. Both the films require a lot of focus as the characters I play in the two are diametrically opposite to each other. In the film I am dubbing for, I play a mother and I have a specific dialect and diction. So, yes, I am going a little mad! But I’m happy to be busy with work.” Managing to work simultaneously on two films sets isn’t easy. A source close to her tells us, “While Swara is shooting for her next with actor Salman Khan in Karjat, she is dubbing for a recently- wrapped up film back in Mumbai. Every morning she travels to Karjat to shoot the film (a 2.5 hour drive). In the evening, she

Linklater’s experiment follows a boy over 11 years (Ethan Hawke) turned out to be a charming but thoroughly irresponsible man. Unfortunately, Olivia’s later husbands range from frustrated to abusive. The actor’s faces change, but the actors don’t, adding to the smooth unfurling of the narrative ribbon in Boyhood. There’s none of the drastic sharpness common in films because age is shown by actual ageing. (Or the lack thereof: Boyhood is concrete proof that Hawke has looked more or less the same for 11 years.) The story jumps from time period to time period without explanations or footnotes — after all, when did life come with subtitles and warnings? — but without feeling awkwardly paced. It’s more like a flipbook and all the episodes of Mason’s childhood come together to create a fantastic document of life in the early 21st century. umb and Dumber Three! is what you will wait for if you like moronic humour. Yes, the idiosyncrasies in Dumb and Dumber to grow on you, while watching this film. You’ll smile, chuckle and fantasise, as to what the next franchise will offer? For honestly, your mind can never settle on this film, it’s too dumb to ingest. This edition that comes 20 years after its predecessor is a poor show. The look, feel and antics of the rubber faced duo dummies Lloyd (Jim Carrey) and Harry (Jeff Daniels) in this film seem to have hit the screen a little too late. The narration takes off from where it left in Dumb and Dumber. After Lloyd is rejected by Mary Swanson, he goes into a coma. The film remains in suspended animation for two decades with Harry faithfully visiting him, at the institution on a weekly basis, to pamper him. Over a period of time, Harry has his own medical issues. He needs a kidney transplant. So when he reveals his predicament to Lloyd, he realises that his friend was pretending to be in coma all along only for a gag! Now jokes aside, the issue is serious and the duo gear up to find a kidney for Harry. Their only solution is to find a genetic TGS Rating match to enable the transplant. Their journey leads them through o`222 a long convoluted route which includes revisiting Harry’s old foster parents, friends and their long-lost love Fraida Flecher (Kathaleen Turner) who wrote to Harry years back informing him that she was pregnant with his child Fanny Felcher (Rachel Melvin) also known as Penny Pinchelow. Laced with sub-plots that include a bit of romance and suspense, along with an assassination conspiracy, the gags are passable, and ultimately underwhelming. What keeps you glued to the seat are the straight-laced performances and anticipation for the funny-bone to tickle. Though independently Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are brilliant actors, their on-screen chemistry now feels jaded. Playing clueless, nitwit grownups stirring a raging sea of stupidity, their once radiant lustre is now missing. Rachel Melvin as the dumb daughter Penny adds some bright spark to the otherwise witless comedy. Given that the original film’s stars, directors and screenwriter all contribute to this new installment, you would expect the outcome to be brilliant. But instead, what you get is a disgusting display of deprived and vulgar recycled gags onscreen which make you chuckle sporadically and keep you wondering if they’ll ever dare make another edition of the series with an equally retarded title - Dumb and Dumber Three! The evolution of North Western Frontier cuisine NWF cuisine has a sumptuous range of flavours and fragrant aromas

he USP of North Western Frontier cuisine is cooking in earthen or copper pots, on charcoal or a slow fire. This cuisine, influenced by several cultures, is mainly non-vegetarian, made from mutton and game like rabbit, venison wild boar. Spices like cloves, cardamom, cinnamon and saffron are used, along with aromatics like keora and rose essence.

Originally from Afghanistan, the NWF cuisine shows influences of the region’s nomadic past. Its unique aspect is from ‘tent cooking’, a lifestyle where the time after sunset was given to the enjoyment and celebration of food and camaraderie. As the people of the region travelled in caravans to new places, they discovered new ingredients and spices that gave the cuisine a distinct style and idiom even as newer and more eclectic influences were incorporated. Executive chef of the Westin Hotel, Anurudh Khanna, says “In India, North Western Frontier fare became a community cuisine. The cuisine became broader as it embraced places like Lucknow, Punjab, and Rajasthan. The tribal people had their own connotation. Gradually the North Western Frontier cuisine became an amalgamation of the common man’s and Mughlai cuisine. In Lucknowi dishes, spices like saffron and mace were incorporated. Since the royals enjoyed it, the dishes were enriched with almonds, cashew nuts, walnuts and cream .The common man could not afford the spices, so he used yogurt.” The meat is marinated with different spices and yoghurt and cooked slowly on charcoal in earthen or copper pots. The favourite desserts of at that time were shahi tukda, phirini, kheer, gulab jamun, sheer pakora, rabdi and khubani ka meetha. Milk was common in all the dishes. It is condensed, and khoya, sugar and a variety of nuts, rose or keora are added to it. Experiences in the Land of the Thunder Dragon Ruchin Shah and Nishit Chandan highlight their experiences of touring Bhutan @TGSWeekly

Adventurous, Exhilarating, Exciting and Fulfilling: This is how we would describe our vacation in Bhutan. The allure of Bhutan, the Himalayan Kingdom at India’s mountainous north, lies in its unique geography: Soaring snow-capped peaks, gushing rivers and whistling cold winds are complemented by ornate dzongs (fortresses), hot chilly-cheese and the kindness of the people. Bhutan is connected by serpentine, scenic roadways; and the best way to enjoy these is on a cruiser motorbike. The 64-km highway from Thimphu to Paro is built quite well and is abundant with painting-like landscapes; with rivulets and bridges, valleys and mountain tops, settlements and pop-up markets. A visit to one of oldest monasteries in Paro, Takhtsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), was the highlight of our trip. The green cover, fresh air, breathtaking views and numerous colourful flags on the trail make this three hour trek one enriching experience to take back home. Bhutan has managed to retain its unique identity and culture thanks to its location, royal patronage and compassion of the people towards their country. A perfect tourist destination, Bhutan has lots on offer for adventureenthusiasts, nature-lovers and people who appreciate the arts and crafts. The artwork and the architecture of the monasteries and Dzongs (fortresses) is intricate and depict the stories from the life and times of Guru Rinpoche, Gautam Buddha and many other deities. The Bhutanese are warm, friendly and simple folk. For foodies, the traditional (but spicy) dishes of Bathup, Thukpa and Ema Datshi are a treat for the palate. Visiting this gorgeous kingdom is highly recommended (Indian passport holders have an economic advantage) for the beauty of its nature, planned cities and friendly people. tgs.feedback@goldensparrow.com

Modern man's greatest challenge is to silence the mind

Finding solace & comfort under the

Yoga teacher Trisha Singh

ver the last decade yoga has been gathering new devotees and today it is mainstream, with just about everyone, from stockbrokers to celebrities toying yoga mats, in the quest for inner peace - and flexible hamstrings. To cater to the clientele’s needs, yoga teachers have developed a plethora of innovative styles, moving yoga outside of their studios and combining it with other fitness forms or lifestyle practices. Yoga goes back 5,000 years, a tradition that has stood the test of time. Traditionally, yoga (Sanskrit for ‘divine union’) has one single aim: stilling the thoughts of the mind in order to experience one’s true self, and ultimately, to achieve liberation (moksha) from the cycle of birth and death (samsara). Patanjali Yoga, the basis of all yoga sutras, has been practiced since the times of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The ancient sages practiced yoga and meditation, and acquired supernatural powers of creation. Over the centuries, yoga has changed and has been made accessible to the masses. But its spiritual essence remains the same, connecting the mind, body and soul. The earliest known innovations to Asana practice can be attributed to Sri Krishnmacharya, the grand sire of modern Hatha Yoga. The ‘props’ he devised were then further worked on by Sri B K S Iyengar. Iyengar Yoga‘s intelligent use of belts, bolsters and chairs has enabled countless people to recover from diseases and injuries and lead healthy lives. Yoga teacher Trisha Singh says, “Yoga trends are changing because people’s minds are undergoing change. Modern man's greatest challenge is to silence the mind. Growing industrial needs and the fast paced lifestyle have made yoga necessary for peace of mind. Yoga truly stirs up one's inner strength which is

beyond the limitations of external circumstances. True power lies in being in control of one’s own body, mind and being connected to ones spirit.” Singh, who has been teaching yoga since 2004, specialises in 'Fusion Yoga' which is blending the physical with classic asanas with free flowing movements derived from martial arts, contemporary dance and Tai Chi. She believes that by stimulating the breath through challenging poses and movements, one can create an inner awareness and peace. The asanas will help in inner balance through physical strength, external beauty through a change in inner perceptions. Bikram Yoga director Paloma Gangopadhay said, “We have made Bikram Yoga more effective medically and scientifically. There are 26 postures and two breathing exercises in this pattern of yoga. This is catering to individual needs. The

Hatha Yoga we teach is medically proven as it helps to detoxify, makes the human body and cures all ailment from the roots like lungs, knee injuries, blood sugar, insomnia till the third stage of cancer. Meditation gives one tremendous self control and become strong individuals. One also masters the craft of controlling various emotions. “Due to time constraint, we cannot meditate every day. We teach suryanamaskar, kapalbhatti, standing breathing postures that makes us biologically strong. It helps to control our core muscles, digestive system and gives and gives the basic warm up for spine. That is the most natural benefit for yoga. It is self healing process. One is not depended on external forces for healing. You yourself are curing the body with the help of Yoga. It is the best medicinal science and alternative medicine.” There are others who still adhere to the old

form of teaching yoga. They do not believe in and trust the new formats. Founder of Param Yoga Dr Renu Mahtani said, “Some of the yoga trends are not suitable for our country. The basis of yoga is inside out and not outside in. All the asanas has to be well co-ordinate and one has to breathe properly. For instance, in Vinyasa Yoga one has to link one’s posture with another. The asanas should happen in a flow. Yoga is strength based, not fast based. Fast yoga can also lead to injuries. All the new trends should be medically and scientifically proven; otherwise one will end up with back and knee injuries.” barnalee.handique@goldensparrow.com

New trends in yoga

Aerial Yoga was considered the biggest trend in 2012. This form includes performing asanas whilst being suspended from a piece of cloth attached to the ceiling. The benefits include a prolonged holding of inversions – thereby sending nourishing blood supply to the head.

In Rope Yoga, you are suspended and leaning over from an Iyengarstyle wall with ropes attached to the wall.

Acro Yoga is a physical practice. It blends elements of yoga, acrobatics, dance performance and lately Thai massage also. It involves the pair of people usually – a Base (who is the person in contact with the ground usually lying down supine or prone) and a Flyer (who is the person elevated off the ground). he traditional black suit is often paired with a black oxford shoe, which is standard, but this look may also look like yo are attending a funeral. Suits today are available in different colours and we should be a little experimental with the shoes we pair them with. As they say you want to know a man take a good look at his shoes. There are five standard colours for a suit: navy, medium or mid-gray, charcoal, brown, and black Now to team them up with the right pair of shoes is a task most men have, so I have just three main colours

Bespoke shoemaker Naman Shah introduces us to the types of men’s shoes and their appropriate function. He can be reached at naman@cuero.in for a pair of shoe which you can team up with your suits. Black, Tan & Burgundy: The Navy suit is the most versatile colour as it can be paired with all three colors the balck, tan and burgundy. The Tan and Burgandy give it a playful and more vibrant look. You can make a pair of nice classic brogues or a once piece laceup to go with the suit. Brown Suits: The brown suit needs to be paired with a brown, tan or burgundy colored shoe, do not pair a brown suit with a black pair of shoes. Charcoal Grey Suit: They say you shouldn’t pair a charcoal grey suit with a brown shoe, but I’d say you team it

up with a nice pair of brown two tonned or a tan color shoe and your good to go. Black Suit: The conventional thinking suggests that a balck suit be paired with a black shoe, I believe to add a little bit of fun in to the suit a tan pair would do just fine, all you need to do is match the belt & watch strap to the colour of the shoe and you will be the one who will stand out from the crowd. Shoes which one must have in wardrobe for a suit: Laceups (classic oxfords), Monk straps (preferable double monk straps) and a pair of nice sleek lace up boots.
