his month’s Ringan literary event from theatre group Aasakta yanked the audience out of its comfort zone and brought it face to face with two very different realities. Gaza and Aryabhushan theatre, Ganesh Peth. Israel’s ground attack on Gaza in July 2014, probably did not stir even a butterfly in Pune because it was then transfixed with the rainfall deficit. Around that time, Aasakta’s Mohit Takalkar was at a director’s lab in Lincoln Center, New York city. His extended interactions with theatre directors from 35 countries, including Israel, Lebanon, and Russia immersed him in a process of intense geo-political enquiry and consciousness. Willy-nilly Ringan found one of its two September themes — Gaza. Accordingly, on the first day of Ringan, a reading of ‘Seven Jewish Children’, British playwright Caryl’s Churchill’s powerful 10-page play against Israel’s stand, provided a powerful counterpoint to the ignorance and cliché-ridden viewpoints on the Palestinian conflict. Three short theatrical retorts by various pro-Israel playwrights tried to balance the Churchill offensive. The reading of Churchill’s play

Short theatrical retorts tried to balance the Churchill offensive saw established names like Parna Pethe and Sarang Sathe. In an experiment tailor-made for the intimate theatre format, upcoming actors from Aasakta popped out of the audience and read Churchill’s play simultaneously, to simulate the sort of din that only war can create. Radhika Apte and Abhay Mahajan presented one of the retort plays, in the form of a modern dance interpretation, set to Englishman Benedict Taylor’s live violin. Fails to take off Serial: Bigg Boss 8 Host: Salman Khan Channel: Colors
By Rajyashree Sen The cream of Indian reality shows began last week. I’m not being sarcastic. Bigg Boss really is the crème de la crème of reality TV in India. And this is purely because of Salman Khan. Whatever we may think of his acting chops or lack thereof, his superstar status makes his hosting a reality show equivalent to having Brad Pitt host Bigg Brother US. But that’s where the glory of the show ends this season. Eight years running, makes it difficult to find celebrity participants – at least known ones or ones we’d care even a smidgen about. So the makers have decided to show their creativity in the brand new set they’ve developed for the show. A crashed and grounded plane with tendrils growing around it. In light of all the recent airline disasters maybe not the best idea – but hey, what do I know. But going by the line-up of celebrities, the crashed plane set is hopefully not portending ominous times. The twist in the show is that there are three people who’ve been chosen to be part of a Secret Society which will give orders to the contestants and will remain safe from elimination. These are an RJ, a socialite (could it be Sheetal Mafatlal?) and an actor-cum-director-cum-muscleman (who I’m certain is Puneet Issar because there’s always one older person on the show, like Sidhu or Anita Advani). You don’t see their faces and they’re dressed in hooded cloaks and have actual beds to sleep in. We also got a social message from Salman, with the entry of the Secret Society. He informed us that wherever there are middlemen there will be scams, corruption and manipulation. Slow clap. After 90 minutes, here’s what I took away. As long as there’s Bigg Boss, there’ll always be a halfway house for the semi-celebrity. Also, maybe it’s time Bollywood and the small screen stopped pushing the stereotype of gay men being freaks of nature. If you must play the homosexual card, why not introduce a lesbian contestant? Most importantly, avoid plastic surgery at all costs. Who said Bigg Boss doesn’t have a social message? Disclaimer: Bigg Boss 8 is aired on Colors which is owned by Network 18, which also publishes Firstpost. (By special arrangement with Firstpost.com)

This kind of stuff keeps me busy. I have mostly read existentialists such as Albert Camus and Jean Paul Satre in my formative years. How did your experience with terrorism manifest in Quantum Siege? Terrorism is today’s most existential problem or the most important one. India has been battered by terrorism for decades. I have been a policeman for nearly two decades and closely observed cases of terrorism, interacted with people accused of terrorism and gained some understanding of their psyche. As a policeman, one is acutely aware of the geopolitical scenario of the Indian subcontinent. All this lends a very realistic flavour to the book. Is fiction liberating or incriminating? It depends on what you are reading. It is an individualistic journey. The same text will take you on two different journeys as a reader or a writer. It could be cathartic, but it was not for me. I wanted to give a raw, inside perspective on how the immune system of the society deals with terrorism on a day-to-day basis. Is there a method you follow for writing? How do you find the time? For me, writing is very organic. It has its own integrity and consistency; it can’t have external references. It has to be on its own. Different books come with their own methods of writing. I wrote my first book Quantum Siege continuously, without a break. I would write from 12 am to 3 am. You can see that kind of connectivity in the book. It has no break in narration. It seems homogenous.

frankly, isn’t saying much. Common factors between them are their turbo-diesel engines and circa-90bhp power figures. There’s more – the Polo and the Punto have always been solid handlers. Their ability to hang through corners where the i20 would understeer has been a distinguishing factor but that’s not entirely true any longer. Hyundai’s engineers insist that a lot of work went into making this new Elite i20 more fun-to-drive and that’s exactly what we’re setting out to prove today. I’m going to work my way down this order because I know the Fiat makes the most power. I also know that the Punto Evo 90HP diesel has always been underwhelming when you put your foot down. To be honest, measured against itself, the 90HP feels like it has decent grunt but only when you use lots of throttle. Part throttle responses feel flat and unexciting and it doesn’t feel like it’s making the 209Nm of torque Fiat claims it does. The gearbox is rubbery and to get the best out the engine, you have to row through it quite a bit. The end result is a car that has a willing chassis and nothing to really challenge its abilities. Driving uphill makes you work really hard and wring out the engine and gearbox and it’s on the way back down that you realise how good the chassis is thanks to the extra speeds you carry. The steering is feelsome but goes curiously light when you pile on lock but the brakes are strong. Next up is the Polo. With it’s flat-bottomed steering wheel and infinitely adjustable

driving p o s it ion , it sets the right tone from the off. The 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel also feels instantly peppier after the Punto and power delivery is definitely more linear. Fact of the matter? You don’t need to work the engine as hard as the Punto’s and so, motoring in the Polo feels more relaxed and easier. The steering is light though and there is some pitching from the heavy nose over undulations but mostly, the Polo remains a safe and secure car to drive fast. That last bit, surprisingly, applies to the Hyundai too. It’s impressive how the i20 has transformed from a light, floaty car to something that likes to stay connected to the road. This improvement comes from a lot of things – the wheelbase is longer and the car is wider, the spring rates have been tweaked and the suspension struts are more vertical than before to better control wheel geometry under cornering loads. Add to these decent road manners, the 1.4-litre, 89bhp common-rail diesel. It does have some lag and the engine fully wakes up only at around 2500rpm but from there on the Elite i20 feels quick. It’s best to upshift around the 3800rpm mark, as power delivery starts to flatten out after that. But, there is enough grunt below 2000rpm for trundling around town in high gear and low rpm; it’s just that you will have to downshift through that light, slick six-speed manual if you want a quick overtake. The other stand-out feature of this engine is its sheer smoothness. At idle and low rpm you will be hard pressed to tell it’s a diesel and this is true even if you are standing outside the car. It really is that good. What’s strange about the i20 is the steering that’s still light at speed but weights up when you’re trying to park. Then again, you can forgive it this little glitch because its rivals aren’t that great in this area either. What it does need is better brakes – they simply feel too wooden and lack

the feel you expect after stomping on the brakes of the Punto or the Polo. When you’re done driving fast and want to get back home, it’s the Punto’s ride that will impress you the most – the suspension never runs out of travel, has excellent bump absorption and it works very silently. Not that the others are far behind – the i20’s suspension is just a bit firmer and the Polo’s is comfortable but doesn’t have the same sophistication or ability to control body movements as the Punto does. The Fiat also has the best ground clearance as you can clearly see from the opening image of this comparison.
Practically speaking, it’s the i20 that has the most cavernous cabin and the most equipment. The Polo scores on sheer quality but it’s a bit understated and Fiat has really upped the Punto’s, shall we say, feelgood quotient. Know that the Polo has the least space at the rear but trades that off somewhat with the big boot. The i20 costs the most at `7.7 lakh, the Punto the cheapest at `7.2 lakh and the Polo slots neatly in between at `7.4 lakh. The Elite i20 is worth the stretch – drive these three cars back to back and it’s the one that feels like it has got the best blend of everything. It may not be the best looking car in the trio (looks are very subjective anyway), but it is the best all-rounder. ouseph@evo.in

en and women have different attitudes to shopping. They are different not only in what they buy, but also how they buy it, the money they are likely to spend and how they feel afterwards. Twenty-four-year-old Jenny Mistry, a resident of Undri and a psychologist, says, “The basic difference in the shopping attitudes between men and women can be judged through the price tags. Men do not see them; women will bargain even for a pair of slippers. There are some myths about shopping. Women are said to take longer to choose. I feel the opposite is true. Men take longer and spend larger amounts.”

Spending pattern Generalisations can be misleading but men are known to spend sporadically, incisively and impulsively. They spend large amounts on electronic gadgets and brands without thinking twice and without guilt. Thirty-four-year-old Ameet Palkar of Bavdhan says, “There are times I have just woken up, logged on to websites and spent Rs 6000. But since I don’t spend that kind of money daily, the guilt over big purchases gets nullified due to long gaps.” Twenty-one-year-old Himanshu Joshi of Bibwevadi, says he always knows what to buy and does not spend impulsively. “If I need to buy something, I go out and buy it,” says the engineering student, “And I ensure that my purchase is of the best quality.”

His other major expenditure is computer games as he buys the latest games off the racks. “Gaming is like recreation; there is no guilt whatsoever when I buy games,” says Ameet.
Cricket and football jerseys are also in great demand. Ninad Paganis, 23-year-old CA student, recounts his hunt for football jerseys during the World Cup. “I wanted Germany’s jersey with Klose’s name and number,” says the Karve Nagar resident. “I was ready to shell out any amount of money for that jersey, branded or not.” Women are compulsive shoppers, but some feel a sense of guilt. on unnecessary things, I do lie about the price,” says the 23-year-old CA student. Salma Prabhu, a clinical psychologist, says that women feel guilty because they shop to fulfil emotional needs. “This vacuum which women try to overcome with shopping is not filled easily. The shopping happiness lasts only until they reach home. Then the guilt sets in, when they see the large bags or when they see that there is no place in their wardrobe for their shopping. “Men do not shop to fulfil any vacuum,” she adds. “Shopping is not a substitute emotion. Thats why they can be specific and quick. Shopping is an easy task for them, like shaving.”
Intensive shoppers
What sparks the desire While both genders shed their monetary inhibitions for a while, the impetus differs. “I would spend before a public meeting, when I would have to address 200 people,” says Ameet who often travels to different cities. “A fresh shirt and a pair of nice trousers would be my pick.” Natasha feels the same: “If there is an occasion, say like a family wedding, I spend quite a bit.” But, people spend impulsively too without occasion.
Gadgets break down gender barriers. Ameet has gadgets including an iPad to a smar tphone. Himanshu also loves to spend on gadgets. Natasha splurges also on gadgets. “Smartphones make life easier. They help you stay updated,” says Natasha.
Himanshu only spends on gadgets when they wear out, as do Natasha and Afreen. However, Natasha wants her phone is the latest android. She now plans to buy a Kindle to stop her bookcase from overflowing. Natasha and Afreen only own two gadgets; a smartphone and a laptop. Ameet owns a smartphone, a Bluetooth caller device, an iPad, an Xbox, a laptop and a personal computer. Men and women have different attitudes. For men, it’s more an investment than raw material for ornaments. Ameet says, “I buy gold wires as investment. When I start feeling guilty over my spending, I immediately go and buy gold. It is necessary for me.”
The balance
In the end, if the spending is balanced by saving and a sense of deserving it, all is good. Afreen says, “I love shopping. I feel happy afterwards, so I guess I deserve it.” Himanshu says, “I am still a student and do not earn. I have never thought of whether I deserve my shopping. But one thing is for sure, expenditure is power only if I spend it in the right manner.” Ameet doesn’t think before shopping or of the guilt. “I have savings which I do not touch. Whatever is with me is my disposable income.” yashdaiv@gmail.com

WRITERS’ RETREAT
Story contributed by: Mukta Raut, 35, technical writer, Baner
T
hey sat on a purple sofa that was slightly askew. He didn’t mind it as much as he would ordinarily have. After all, she was gracious enough to have invited him over. Wait. Not gracious. They had spoken on the phone a couple of times and she had seemed nice enough. She at least showed some interest in him and not his salary or whether he had a house… his ‘own’ house. By that, most women seemed to mean a house that she could share but his parents would have nothing to do with. It had been so long since he’d been on this matrimonial trail. He could trace the evolution of this conversation. There used to be a time when a woman and he’d be in the intimate darkness of a car. They’d have met a few times earlier, laughed, watched movies or gone for walks. Then just as he would re-arrange his biases to make space for a future, this conversation would come up. And he’d get this slightly bitter taste in the back of his throat. “No,” he wanted to say. “It’s not my ‘own’ house. I dragged myself into a dead-end job to pay for it. I didn’t buy that guitar because the EMI would cut into it. I swallowed my pride in the company of ‘entrepreneur’ friends for being a conventional rug-rat and living with my parents while they lived out their dreams in rented apartments. All that made me resentful. And I took it out on my parents every night when I’d shove the food and turn up the TV volume and not talk to them. No. It’s not my “own” house and it certainly won’t be yours.”
It’s not my ‘own’ house. I dragged myself into a deadend job to pay for it. I didn’t buy that guitar...
Writing tips by Michael Moorcock 1. Find an author you admire and copy their plots and characters in order to tell your own story, just as people learn to draw and paint by copying the masters. 2. Introduce your main characters and themes in the first third of your novel. 3. If you are writing a plot-driven genre novel make sure all your major themes/plot elements are introduced in the first third, which you can call the introduction. Resolve your themes, mysteries and so on in the final third, the resolution.

Now, the ‘own house’ discussion would come up soon after “hello”. This girl hadn’t asked him that, though. She’d asked him to come over to her house in the next city instead. At first, this struck him as a little forward. She lived by herself. And this match was arranged, so to speak. Somehow, in the way she’d said, “Come over then,” he’d sensed escapism. He wasn’t sure if they’d be compatible but he had driven four hours to find out. Her house had been a mess but the food was excellent. Mushroom with haleem masala was a first for him, but it went excellently with brown rice. Most of the furniture was tilted or skewed. Her clothes were weird, or ‘eclectic’, as he thought she would call them. She was nice looking, but that strange, untameable scent that came off her body when they’d hugged that afternoon was funny. Actually, it was not. He doubted whether she’d ever have the maturity to stick to or commit to anything unpleasant. Although, why he thought marriage with him would be unpleasant, he didn’t know. He was being eccentric. No, wait. Weird. She had a tiny garden in front of her kitchen. “They’re such pretty weeds,” she’d said by way of explanation on why she hadn’t bothered uprooting them. He got a little irritated. Sure. If you were ditzy, anything is ‘pretty’ enough to leave as is. Maybe the garbage clearance staff could tell her once, “Oh but miss, your trash has all these primary colours. Let’s leave it here.” But there were a few tiny bulbs strewn around and she’d also lit a half-used vanilla scented candle. There was a cup of whiskey for him (she didn’t have the right glass) and a cup of green tea for her. They shared a wedge of carrot cake he’d brought over and after a long time, he felt a sense of something going calm inside of him. A knot that stayed lodged in the middle of his chest… it seemed to be rounding off the edges a little. It was nice, he thought, looking around. Maybe he should have invested in a house with a Mushroom garden. Almost delicately she broached with haleem the subject of why they were meeting. masala was a What kind of girl was he looking for? What kind of life did he want for him first for him, and his wife? Children? His take on but it went fidelity? He liked that she was coaxing out his responses and not demanding excellently them. He liked that this conversation with rice was happening without a timer. It was close to midnight now. He
really had to get back unless… unless she insisted he could stay. Her invitation was there, of course. Her insistence would make the difference. They got up. She asked him if he’d like more cake for the road. Or a thermos of strong coffee maybe. They entered the living room again and he collected his things. As she filled a thermos with black coffee, she turned and asked him, “Do you really want to marry?” He looked in her eyes and saw her answer. No. And there was that again. That slight rise of bile. That irritation with free-floating types that had made a lifestyle of being lost, clueless, and irresponsible. She’d never ever take a home loan, he thought. He tried to get the edge out of his voice when he said, “Yes. I’d like to.” Just before he left, he straightened the purple sofa.
They sat on a purple sofa which was slightly askew. He didn’t mind it as much as he would ordinarily have...
Next fortnight’s premise: He/She had woken up with a tingling relief. Last night was just a dream. The relief had vanished as soon as it had come, for a solid evidence, a piece of blue cloth lay on the floor....

Suffering from bipolar disorder? Practice yoga Yoga practice may bring significant benefits for people with bipolar disorder, a survey study suggests
A
lso known as manic-depressive illness, bipolar disorder refers to a brain condition that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. “Some individuals with bipolar disorder believe that yoga has had a significant positive impact on their life,” said co-researcher Lisa Uebelacker from Brown University in the US. For
the study, the researchers recruited 109 individuals who identified themselves as having bipolar disorder and as being yoga practitioners. Of 86 individuals with useable responses, 70 had positive results on a screening questionnaire for manic symptoms. Participants reported practicing yoga for an average of six years; they attended a yoga class twice a week and practised yoga at home three times every week, on average. Most participants believed that yoga had benefits for their mental health. Twothirds said that yoga positively affected their depressive and manic symptoms. They also reported positive emotional effects of yoga, such as reduced anxiety and worry;
positive cognitive effects, especially in terms of increased mindfulness; and positive physical effects, such as weight loss, increased energy, and improved sleep. Fifteen respondents said that yoga had been significantly life-changing. However, yoga is not without risks - including potential worsening of symptoms related to bipolar disorder, the researchers noted. “Our results suggest that hatha yoga may be a powerful positive practice for some people with bipolar disorder but that it is not without risks and, like many treatments for bipolar disorder, should be used with care,” the researchers wrote. The study appeared in the Journal of Psychiatric Practice. IANS
