‘I play it by ear’ By Vidya Unnithan @TGSWeekly

W

ing Commander Anup Banerjee has been playing the harmonica for the last 50 years. His love affair with music started at a young age, when a couple of soldiers playing the harmonica inspired him to pick up the instrument. While at school, he was part of the ‘Nomads’, one of Pune’s first bands. As co-founder of Team Miracle, a social support group, he plays music at the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre, Artificial Limb Centre and at the Command Hospital, to cheer up patients and the seriously wounded soldiers. Recently, he held a solo show at Gyaan Adab, simultaneously playing the harmonica and the keyboard. Q: When did you start playing the harmonica and how did you get introduced to the instrument? A: I fell in love with the sound of the harmonica when I was in Class II, when I heard a couple of soldiers playing the instrument as they passed our house every evening in Meerut. I also heard it in Bishop’s School, being played by one of the seniors. In 1964, when I was in Class VII, my father gave me my first harmonica, a Hohner Puck bought from Fazal’s, on MG Road, Pune, and since then I have been playing it. I practiced, until I mastered the instrument. Q: Do you play any other instruments? A: Yes, a few years ago, I taught myself to play the synthesiser Q: Were you always inclined towards music? A: Yes, I love music, both Indian and western,

Wing Commander Anup Banerjee on music, life and more Q: What kind of music do you listen to? A: I listen to all kinds of music – both Indian and western, and particularly music that has rhythm, harmony and melody. Q: Are there any musicians who inspire you? A: The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, Elton John, Dire Straits, Eagles. And I love the Hindi film songs of the ‘60s and ‘70s – the evergreen Golden Oldies, as they call them.

but I cannot read music notations. I play it by ear. I am what you can call ‘a self-taught musician’. Q: What do you like the most about the harmonica? A: Though it’s a difficult instrument to play, I love its sound, and its size. It’s so ‘pocketable’ that you can carry it anywhere you want. Q: Why do you think music is necessary in one’s life? A: As Shakespeare said, “Music is the food of life...play on.” And don’t they also say, “Music has the power to soothe the savage beast.” It’s one of the best de-stressors, and at the same time it enriches our lives. Music like other arts help shape your thinking and philosophies, it eases the pressures of life. The melodies and the harmony a song carries makes people relate to it.

Q: Did you ever consider playing professionally? A: No not really, but I do play for social causes such as for patients in the military hospital, and for our soldiers who have become paraplegics or amputees, and if I can raise money for them, I would be more than willing! Q: The harmonica is not a widely played instrument; why do you think that is so? A: It’s a difficult instrument to learn, because unlike a guitar or a keyboard, or most other instruments, a teacher cannot hand-hold you. Once the instrument is in your mouth, a teacher cannot show you the keys or correct you. You have to learn on your own. Q: Your advice to budding musicians. A: Keep practicing. Don’t give up! It may sound very raucous and noisy in the beginning, but it gradually gets better, and suddenly one day you are able to play it correctly. Of course, you need a patient family who will put up with this screeching, as my wife and daughter did! vidyaunnithan@gmail.com

Recently, the actor bagged the trophy for the Sabse Achi Dosti category at Zee Rishtey Awards for his role as Bhagwan Das in his TV show Neeli Chhatri Waale. He is delighted. “It will always remain close to my heart as it’s my first award so far,” he added. With Christmas around the corner, get into the kitchen to cook up some Goan specials

Christmas is a good

season for foodies

Upasana Joseph

TGS NEWS SERVICE @TGSWeekly

T

he Christmas season brings along a feast of sweets, like kulkuls and the Goa special guava cheese. TGS Weekly brings guides you four recipes that are sure to brighten the Christmas cheer. Upasana Joseph, 24 shares, “Goans love this time of the year. We start preparing for Christmas sweets and delicacies a few weeks in advance. It is a time to come together for the family and near and dear ones.” feedback.tgs@goldensparrow.com

KALKALS

Ingredients: 1/2 kg plain flour 1/2 tsp baking powder 2 eggs 1 cup coconut cream 4 tbsp sugar, powdered 1 tbsp butter Oil for deep frying 1 cup sugar (granulated) 3-4 tbsps water Preparation: Mix the flour and baking powder well. Add the butter a little at a time, mixing gently. Beat the eggs in a separate bowl and add them to the flour-butter mix. Add the powdered sugar and coconut milk to this and mix into a soft dough. Form the dough into small marble-sized balls. Grease the back of a fork with some oil and flatten and press a ball of dough on it. Starting at one end, roll the dough off the fork and into a tight curl. The end result will be a tube-like curl with the design from the fork on it! Make the remaining dough similiarly till it is all used up. Heat the oil in a deep, heavy-bottomed pan on a medium flame. When hot, fry the kulkuls in it, making sure to turn often, till they are a light golden brown in color. Drain and cool on paper towels. Put the granulated sugar and water in a separate pan and cook till the sugar melts fully. Put the cooled kulkuls into this sugar syrup and coat well. Remove and allow to sit in a plate till the sugar encrusts on the kulkuls. When fully cooled, you can store the kulkuls for a considerable amount of time if kept in an air-tight container.

MARZIPAN

GUAVA CHEESE

Method: Blend all the ingredients, except the food colouring (add that later to portions of prepared Marzipan as needed) together until smooth. Make into desired shapes - fruits, Christmas related shapes like stars, Christmas trees and snowmen can be made using cookie-cutters or you can roll out the Marzipan into a thick slab and cut into diamond or square shapes. If you’re using paint-on food colours, let the shapes sit for at least 3-4 hours before painting, so that the surface is sealed and colour does not seep or run where you do not want it to. You can also dip each shape in melted chocolate and allow to set. Top with nuts, sprinkles or other smaller Marzipan shapes. Allow to set for a day at least.

Method: Cut the guavas into quarters and remove the seeds. Put the seeds in a sieve and add a small amount of water. Rub into the sieve and press down with a flat spoon so as to extract the pulp surrounding the seeds, into a bowl kept below the sieve. Blend the guava pieces to s smooth pulp in your food processor. Christmas invigorates you with a childlike spirit. Each one of us starts to feel like a child and we tend to leave our adulthood behind and step clear of the years lived. This December too, this spirit basks merrily. While for many Christmas may mean all about gifts. Young couple Sheetha and Nithin Maranoor share why Christmas is not only about exchanging gifts but spreading love and cheer. “Whether we admit it or not for most Christmas is about presents. But Christmas’s gift-giving tradition has its roots in the Three Kings’ offerings to the infant Jesus. However, gift-giving did not become the central Christmas tradition it is today until the late 18th century. Stores began placing Christmas-themed ads in newspapers in 1820. Santa Claus, the increasingly popular bearer of gifts, started popping up in ads and stores 20 years later,” says Sheetha. Today, Christmas is a bonafide gift-giving bonanza. “But we forget the essence of the festival. The idea is to spread cheer and happiness. As a rule, we do not buy each other expensive gifts. Instead we try and utilise the money for a good cause, example buying blankets and food for the underprivileged.” Christmas itself is really about a big present that God gave the world about 2000 years ago - Jesus! One of the most famous Bible verses, John 3:16, says: ‘God loved the world so much, that he gave his one and only Son, so that whoever believes in him may not be lost but have eternal life.’.

The idea is to spread cheer and happiness. We do not buy each other expensive gifts

Why Pune

cinema screens are constantly

a-glitter

Besides the enthusiastic audiences, Pune has a number of clubs and organisations that are serving the cause of cinema and film-making. Yash Daiv and Ishani Bose share details The Lost Plot

P

une is a fi lm hub of high repute. Not only is the city home to a vast multitude of fi lm buffs, but it is also constantly abuzz with a variety of fi lm festivals, and other fi lm-oriented events and activities. The city abounds in fi lm clubs, that besides instructing and informing their members about Indian and world cinema, also educate them about the nuances and aesthetics of fi lm-making, through fi lm shows and discussions with experts and the fi lm-makers themselves. The clubs also have regular screenings of rare and classic fi lms for their members. The following are the clubs and organisations who are lighting up Pune’s fi lm-scape with their activities in the celluloid arena.

The film festival circuit The Pune International Centre (PIC) curates fi lm festivals, featuring cinema of the world. It is not a fi lm club. It started as a think tank that focused on economy and politics. “Art and culture was left out and the founding members felt that the PIC needed to be culturally active too,” said Prashant Girbane, director, PIC. The concept of holding fi lm festivals is credited to founding member Latika Padgaonkar, who curates most of the festivals. The club had to

manage the first fi lm festival on their own, and on a shoestring budget. “The difficult task was to acquire permissions from the directors and the producers for their fi lms,” said Girbane. Over time, the PIC networked with national and international fi lm personalities and academicians, and now the PIC fi lm festival is a highlight of their annual agenda. The PIC organises a Niche fi lm festival, which is unique. The PIC fi lm festivals feature talks and lectures by fi lm historians, besides bonding with international bodies and fi lmmakers. PIC in association with the National Film Archives of India (NFAI), has highlighted cinema literature from different countries. The list of festivals includes the Buddhist fi lm Festival, Bangladeshi War Film Festival, Afghan Film Festival, Kazakh Film Festival, and the recent Timeless Shakespeare event. “The festival has received a phenomenal response. The festivals owe their success to Pune’s cosmopolitan nature. We have people from all over the country and students from all over the world,” said Girbane. Recently PIC invited note screenwriter Anjum Rajabali, who spoke about Satyajit Ray’s adaptations of Rabindranath Tagore’s stories, to Vishal Bhardwaj’s retelling of Shakespearean tragedies. “People benefit when a celebrated personality conducts a talk or a workshop. Students and fi lm lovers from different colleges and professions avail the valuable dissemination,” said Girbane. In the coming year, PIC plans to organise the Buddhist Film Festival once again, in the wake of the overwhelming response the first edition received.

Comprehending short films: Arbhaat Arbhaat was launched by noted director Umesh Kulkarni, in 2013, to promote short fi lms. The club has evoked an enthusiastic lot of members right from the start. Today, it has 90 members, who meet once a month, for fi lm screenings and to discuss fi lm-making.

"The idea behind this club was to promote the independent form of art of shot films." -Shreyas Dasharathe

Features

“The idea behind this club was to promote the independent form of art of shot films. In India it is yet to go mainstream, whereas in European countries it is looked at as an experimental medium. We want to inculcate it within our system,” said Shreyas Dasharathe, the club’s co-ordinator. The monthly screenings are based on a theme. From short films about cityscapes focusing on architecture and history, to gender based films which talk of perspectives, the screenings are followed by members’ interaction. The critically acclaimed Marathi film Fandry was recently screened by the club. The cast and crew of the film was present for the interaction.“We try to get the film-makers to interact during screenings. It helps the participants gain insight into film-making which goes well beyond any theoretical learning,” said Dasharathe. Kulkarni also organises national level filmmaking workshops. “It helps amateur film-makers develop a vision. The technical knowledge of audio and visual elements as well as the aesthetics are conveyed through the workshop,” said Dasharathe. A workshop called ‘Shoot a Shot’ will be conducted on December 26 by Kulkarni. The club is aiming at full time filmmaking or as a regular activity.

Old is gold: Aashay Film Club Satish Jakatdar, Prasannakumar Aklujkar, Pradeep Apte, Vandana Bhale, Deepak Deodhar, Prabhakar Wadekar and Mukund Sangoram, together started the Aashay Film Club on August 1, 1985, when Pune’s film buffs had very little access to world cinema. "In those days there was not much awareness about world cinema. Our aim was to generate a film culture in Pune, the kind that now exists in the city. Thus I, along with a couple of college friends, who used to often have long discussions on world cinema and classics, got together to set up Aashay. Initially, we were just about 15 members all over the city but, over the years, have grown in number," says Jakatdar, co-founder of the Club. Aashay would get prints of world cinema through embassies and consulates and hold screenings of the movies for students at Fergusson College, SP College, University of Pune and so on. They also hired screening equipment like 16 mm and 35 mm projectors to screen films at venues like the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics’ Kale Hall, Fergusson College Amphitheatre, Film and Television Institute's main theatre etc. The biggest change, Jakatdar says, came in 1999, when the All India Conference of Film Clubs was held in Pune. It was hosted by Aashay and was attended by 400 film club representatives secretaries from all over the country. "This conference brought about a change in the focus of all film screenings. It brought about the advent of DVDs as a tool to turn people's attention towards film appreciation," he said. In 2000, the club also started the Asian Film Festival, followed by the Pulotsav in 2002, that brought in audiences from varied fields such as music, art, culture, theatre and films. "2000-2005 were thus easily the best years of Aashay," he says. Jakatdar added that the greatest challenge that Aashay faced was the technological, which was shifting from the 35mm screening equipment to DVDs. "The advent of DVDs and cable TV have also led the film clubs to shrink over the years. But Aashay with its varied and unique theme-based film festivals has tried to offset this

aberration," he said. Aashay has been conducting workshops and theme-based film festivals over the years that are looked forward to by the film connoisseurs in the city. Today the club is looked after by Jakatdar and Virendra Chitrav. who joined in 1995. The club has 1600 members and the annual membership is Rs 700. "Aashay has certainly brought about a positive change in the film culture of the city and has contributed in making Pune a culturally rich centre. In the future, we want to continue our work in popularising world cinema and will persist in reaching out to all the college film clubs in the city," said Jakatdar.

Lost The Plot

Nikita Naiknavare's Lost the Plot endeavour is more like a rooftop cinema and pub, where one can watch classic films, to unwind and de-stress. "It's a place where one can put one's feet up, unwind and literally avoid 'losing the plot. We also wanted to give people a different cinema experience, an alternative to the multiplex model, both in terms of ambience and film selection. Our venue is thus completely open to the night sky, for a touch of romance and magic. We also provide wireless headphones to all those who come to watch our film screenings," says Naiknavare. Lost The Plot began film in January 2014. The club screens one film per evening on the weekends, at Seasons Hotel in Aundh. It has now also added Wednesdays to its schedule, when they showcase only documentaries. Currently, the club screens popular and cult classics like The Godfather, My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, Forrest Gump, The Lion King, Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, The Motorcycle Diaries, Andaaz Apna Apna and The Dark Knight. "These are films which one can watch over and over again. They strike a chord and are known for their popular appeal. But we’re working towards becoming a platform for independent films and documentaries. Eventually, these are the genres that we want our guests to come try out, because they like the space and trust our taste," she says. The group has also conducted workshops for kids, including one on poi, which is an indigenous performance art form from New Zealand. The kids made their own pois to take home. The group has also conducted a storytelling workshop, which involved kids in making up their own stories, a rooftop slack-lining session as part of its Adventure Sports Documentary Series, which "Our aim was has never been done before in India. "To help promote independent films, we also invite the directors to the screening. We’ve seen some extremely interesting to generate discussions take place at these events," she says. a film culture Naiknavare says that there were challenges in the setting up of The Lost Plot. up this group was not easy, as it had never been done before in India. in Pune, the "Setting So everything, from the legalities to the execution has been a challenge. But we kind that now worked through it one by one, taking special care to go by the book. All it took was a little bit of determination and patience," she says. exists." With the club nearing its first anniversary, it has a list of exciting ideas. "We are -Satish definitely going to conduct more workshops and activities based on certain film genres and have planned screenings in surprise locations," she says.
