Canadian DJs Sultan and Ned Shepard think the music scene today is good, bad, overwhelming, inspiring and crazy By Anjali Shetty

TGS: How often do you rehearse together? Do you have set traditions while rehearsing? Sultan and Ned Shepard: We don’t exactly rehearse, but we have a studio so we are always discussing what we want to play. We like to have spontaneity in our shows or else it wouldn’t be fun. We like to surprise each other while we’re deejaying. Sometimes we get into little arguments about whether we should play something. TGS: Do your travels inspire your music? Sultan and Ned Shepard: Yes, always! Even though we spend most of our time in hotels and airports, we always try to make time to see things and go to places that inspire us.

TGS: Who do you idolise? Sultan and Ned Shepard: Anyone who is an honest person and lives their lives according to their inner voice. Musically we admire Max Martin for always knowing what a hit is, Eddie Vedder for sticking to his guns, and Prince for being a total boss.

TGS: How important are awards to you? Sultan and Ned Shepard: Awards are definitely cool, but it’s a double-edged sword. On one hand, if you get them, it’s great. But if it’s the reason that you are doing it, then it’s all wrong.

TGS: What is your view on Bollywood music? Would you be interested in collaborating with an Indian artiste? Sultan and Ned Shepard: Yes! We’ve spent a lot of time in India and love the music and instruments here. We also appreciate how enthusiastic people are for Bollywood music. If we connected with an artist that we liked, we would 100 per cent collaborate on something cool. anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

merican Sniper is quite literally the story of a legend. It is based on one of the hardcore snipers in the American History, Chris Kyle’s life, who was referred by his comrades as a legend for the terrorists he shot at Iraq. The movie is real telling of what happened in this man’s life post 9/11, when he decided to go to Iraq, shuffling between duty and family only to return with a psyche conditioned by the war. What is essential to Kyle’s story is the perspective the sniper gets over an ongoing war.

He observes every movement behind the scope. A rational decision awaits the shot, a decision conveyed by the people on field and headquarters. It is a job that requires utter stillness and a dynamic mind. Kyle was sharp predator or what his father calls a “sheep dog” that can plunder the opportunity for the safety of his herd. Chris’ story is somewhat episodic in the telling. It is sequentially organized with action and significant mission developments. The sharp scenes take away the intimacy from the film. Kyle is seen as the warrior, on the battlefield. In contrast the emotional sequences seem to be stoic. This

photograph is like a picture and every picture tells a story. Photography today is a universal and most effective medium of human expression. As a child I used to tinker about with my uncle’s camera. That I could capture a scene or a moment with just a clock on the 8GB memory card was like magic. I used to remain engrossed with the camera for hours, clicking away at random. But photography really took centrestage in my life after I did a course with Satish Paknikar, a leading photographer of Pune. Paknikar taught me the basics of photography, and a great deal about the camera. A camera is more than a toy; it is a magical instrument that enables the photographer to document a scene in any way that one wants to. I can click a picture during the day and make it look like a night shot by playing around with the shutter speed. I took to travelling to other

places just for the sake of photography. I am fascinated with landscape photography and portraits. It is really inspiring when other people appreciate and admire my photographs and say things like, “I wish I was there to see this view.” That is really what made me take up photography as a profession. My aim is to make a scene look better in the picture than in reality. It’s easy to make an amazing view look good in a photograph. For instance, the army bunker I shot in Sikkim was not that appealing in reality, as it appears in the picture. Photography is a modern and technical art, and a thorough understanding of the camera is essential before one can take amazing photographs. For me, learning is a constant process in photography, and there are always new places to visit and memorable moments to capture. A great photograph expresses exactly what one feels when the camera goes click. tgs.feedback@goldensparrow.com

Memories: The Kolhapur floods in 2005 are a real bad memory for the Aptes. “The Chevrolet was under water and it took me three years to restore it. The heavy spoke wheels needed time and energy to restore. Money was not an issue as we have an inhouse workshop to maintain the vehicle. You need to relate to it and understand the vehicle. You can just own it for the sake of it. If one has no time, one should not go in for these cars. They should be happy with

I am very finicky about the maintenance of the cars. I have groups of people who take care of my cars 24x7. Some take care of the engine, others take care of the engine and the interiors. It is expensive to maintain these cars.”

He said, “During my school and college days, I used to collect miniature models of various cars. My father gifted me an Opel when I was in college. Later on, I bought a 10-horn Convertible Impala. As years passed, my fascination grew. I dreamt of owning different cars and having my own car museum.” After that, there was no looking back! He bought the Chevrolet Impala Convertible used by the late Indira Gandhi, from a government auction 12 years ago, and an Austin from an English jockey in 1978. TGS LIFE JANUARY 31, 2015 PUNE

features S Hussain Zaidi and Mukul Deva were among the prominent crime writers at India’s first Crime Writers Festival held in Delhi recently By Salil Desai

I

n his seminal book, The Better Angels of our Nature, Harvard academic Steven Pinker has successfully argued that murder and violent crime is at their lowest ever levels today in the long bloody history of mankind. Hard to believe given the amount of crime news we encounter daily but, the truth is quite contrary. Indeed, as human beings have become less murderous in real life, we have perhaps found a vicarious, peaceful way of satisfying our blood lust between the covers of the latest crime thriller. No wonder crime fiction is the second most popular literary genre the world over. But who pens these novels of blood and gore and death? Are they dark, sadistic, bloodthirsty individuals playing out their repressed fantasies and desires or deceptively mild and gentle souls who wouldn’t harm a fly?

A perfect setting

The first ever Crime Writers Festival in India held at New Delhi on January 17 and 18 provided the perfect opportunity to observe these perpetrators of literary crimes at close quarters. Being a crime author myself, I was delighted to be invited as a speaker for the festival. And boy was it an experience to rub shoulders and exchange notes with some of the best crime writers from all over the world and India – Hakan Nesser, Ashwin Sanghi, David Stuart Davies, Surender Mohan Pathak, Mukul Deva, Tarquin Hall, Hussain Zaidi and over 30 other fellow

Killing with the Quill practitioners of the craft. The setting was perfect – a cold, misty winter morning at the open air amphitheatre in Delhi’s India Habitat Centre. One by one, the crime writers trickled in – of all shapes and sizes and personalities and nationalities - and for the next two days held forth on the nuances of writing whodunits and noir, sharing the finer points of their craft, voicing what drives them to write about the dark side of human nature and their opinions about the evolution of the genre and its impact on readers and society. It was exhilarating stuff.

isher and an Australian respectively, all of whom have settled in India and embarked on crime fiction featuring Indian detectives.Even Caryl Ferey, a French author who sets his thrillers in different parts of the world like New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina with local, social, political or historical themes expressed a desire to set a book with the theme of female foeticide. The concluding sessions of the first day included an insightful analysis of the works of the prolific Pakistani crime writer Ibne-Safi, born in pre-partition India, by Urdu writer Khalid Jawed, while film-maker Dibakar Bannerjee and actors Dhritiman Chaterji and Rajit Kapur explored the factors behind the continuing popularity of ‘Byomkesh Bakshi’ created by Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. Day two began with a crackling interview of Swedish writer Nesser by Pinto. Nesser summed up why crime fiction is an excellent literary vehicle by observing, “You can squeeze in existentialist questions naturally into a crime story.” However the day belonged to some of the most brilliant Indian thriller writers who shared nuances of their craft. “The four things that helped me succeed as a writer are discipline, knowledge, focus and knowing that I don’t know anything,” Deva said while Sanghi advised wannabe authors, “You’ve to find a way to grip the reader, suck him into the story because surveys say an average book is read only upto page 17.”

Mumbai mantra

Mumbai figured prominently in the consciousness of other authors. Jha who sets his noir novels in Mumbai remarked that the cosmopolitan city was soon going to be engulfed by its dark underbelly as crime had already penetrated gated communities, while Zaidi, the man who has relentlessly chronicled the Mumbai mafia recounted some chilling and amusing encounters with the denizens of the underworld. As the sun set on India’s first Crime Writers Festival, I reflected on the words of the French crime novelist Jean-Patrick Manchette, who once said, “The crime novel is the great moral literature of our time.” Indeed, crime fiction often reflects the moral, social and psychological quotient of the society like nothing else and needs to be celebrated and nurtured.
