The other interesting aspect is that the workshop will be in an open space at a shopping mall. Normally, workshops are conducted in enclosures. We are attempting something different this time. It is always fun to teach a live audience.” Feroz started his career in 1996 as a dancer with choreographer/ director Farah Khan. We don’t want to be departmentalised

Imaad Shah and Saba Azad joke about getting tired of each others’ quest for perfection but that’s what helped them come up with their second EP, Union Farm. Madboy/Mink will be touring the city with the new song soon By Anjali Shetty-Shirsath @shetty_anjali

T

hey spell energy, quirkiness and madness together. Madboy/Mink aka Imaad Shah and Saba Azad are not your regular musician duo. Having achieved well individually, the two are now out with their second EP, titled Union Farm. This year, has been great for both Imaad and Saba thanks to the popularity of their song Calcutta Kiss that was included in Detective Byomkesh Bakshy and now they will be touring the country to release their second EP (Extended Play). A slight departure from their earlier release, Union Farm (https://soundcloud.com/ madboymink/sets/union-farm) has slightly political undertones in its lyrics and the guitar treatment is a step closer to their trademark high energy dance music. It is distinctly retroflavoured, a throwback to the 60s and 70s; an era both Imaad and Saba relate to. They draw their influences from various places, including different art forms, fashion, films. “From the weather to cinema we distil the concept down to our trademark. We don’t want to be departmentalised,” says Imaad. With individual projects and music

assignments, it must get difficult to find time for rehearsals but both artists have learned to make it work “We have our home studio and that is where we produce our music. We enjoy what we do and being busy is what we like,” smiles Saba. The duo has become a lot more discerning when it comes to choosing where to perform. “We have seen the scene and are aware of what works and what does not. Even if we have our creative difference we thrash it out right there,” Saba adds. Both Saba and Imaad have worked together for a while but that does not mean they get along just fine. “Imaad is a genius and multi-talented artiste. Having said that, he is also a workaholic. I have to literally ask him to breathe and take a break, at times. He is even learning on a break, which is a great thing but sometimes you need to relax,” shares Saba. Imaad says, “She has raw talent and a voice like silk but she takes perfection to an absurd level,” he says. The third leg of their promotional tour will be held in Pune. “The city has genuine music lovers. It is not just college students but people from different age group come out to hear new music. For musicians, it is a great high. We find a new crowd every time we perform in Pune,” says Imaad.

Lioba Rubik, co-owner of the restaurant Mahlzeit, suggest interesting ways of using chives in German cuisine By Anjali Shetty-Shirsath @shetty_anjali

L

ioba Rubik, one of the partners of the newly opened German street food restaurant Mahlzeit, brings chives to the chopping table. Often confused with spring onions or scallions, chives are herbs that come with a mild onion-like flavour. Spicy, pungent, crunchy and tubular are the words used to describe the herb the best. “It is stiff and hollow as compared to spring onion leaves. Chives look like grass at first glance. A generous sprinkle of the leaves add flavour to soups, salads and appetisers,” says Lioba. Chives consist just 30 calories per 100 grams. They are filled with flavonoid anti-oxidants, plant fibre, minerals, folates and vitamins. “They are best utilized for flavouring and garnishing recipes. Chives bring a bright green colour to dishes, which is appetising,” adds Lioba. He also suggests that one should always wash chives in cold water and dry them with a paper towel. Chop them to garnish and remember to add them just before the dish is done to maintain the flavour. When freshly chopped, the herb tastes great with mint, cucumber, shallot, parsley, tomato salad. “You can use it in risotto, mashed potatoes, stock soup, etc. The spicy flavour of chives brings a great twist to any dish,” says Lioba. In this new section, TGS brings to you flavours from across the world. An expert will share dos and donts related to a special ingredient from the cuisine of their country. The ingredient would be something you’ve seen at a supermarket but always wondered what to do with it. anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

The Open Film School Pune

JUNE 6, 2015 PUNE

Filmmaker Jay Gholap started The Open Film School Pune earlier this year. Having studied at the New York Film Academy, Jay realised the need to introduce the core of fi lm-making to India. He realised that Indian fi lmmaking schools teach students how to get into television or fi lms whereas the idea of fi lm-making or acting is misplaced. This is what gave birth to The Open Film School. “Film schools in our country offer long term and expensive courses. There is a lack of focus on technical aspects. The club addresses people’s curiosity about many aspects of fi lmmaking. It also teaches the nuances and core of the art form,” says the 36-year-old. The club usually meets every weekend and is also present in Bangalore and Mumbai. There is no membership fee to be a part of this club. “We have paid workshops or seminars but more often we try to conduct free screenings and discussions. The idea is to have people interested in fi lms or plain amateurs to understand the art better,” adds Jay. He agrees that fi lmmaking is a continuous learning process and the club offers members a first try. “Our USP lies

In case, you have a script ready and they like it, they would buy and produce it. The club also offers students an assistant fi lm-making programme. “As a teacher, it is wonderful when people come up to me and discuss how they view a fi lm differently now. It

helps me too as I have to constantly stay updated. I have to keep reading and it is an enriching experience,” smiles Jay. Documentaries are the perfect place for young fi lmmakers to begin learning their craft. That’s because fiction fi lms are about re-creating a version of reality that is attuned to the story’s dramatic necessities. The club organises fi lm festivals, screenwriting and screening of short movies and documentaries.

Pune Strategy Board Games Meet-up

The GrapeWine Oenophiles Pune has hosted wine festivals and seen stores retailing impressive stocks of wines. Over time it has turned the right to becom home to a great wine club. The GrapeWine Oenophiles is a platform for wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs, who want to explore different wines, but might not be sure how to go about it. It is a meeting place for those who want to learn more about wines, sample a variety of wines and different types of food that wines can be paired with. The GrapeWine Oenophiles is a monthly wine club conceptualised by wine expert Sujata Patil. The club hosts theme-based wine and food evenings showcasing wines produced at Indian wineries as well as wines imported from different countries across the world. “We meet once a month and discuss wines. I wanted to create awareness among wine lovers about wines available in India. We conduct informal meets on a weekend evening to taste, discover, understand and explore wines. It is a club to enjoy wines with gourmet food and great conversation,” says Sujata.

They have over 20 active members who are regular at every meet. The meet starts with introduction to a particular wine, followed by a wine tasting and food pairing session. The club is very active on social media too, where they inform members about different grapes used in wines and facts associated with wines.

Gaurav Roy has been an avid board gamer for years. He is also responsible for hooking Padma Jangala on to the games. Eventually, Zubi Nema joined the bunch. “Zubi suggested we make the group public and invite likeminded people. So, we started Pune Strategy Board Games six months ago,” says Padma, who organises gaming meet-ups on Wednesdays and Thursday, every week. Their first meet-up was attended by 15 people and today they are a 250-plus member group. For every meetup an experienced gamer has to be present to explain the rules and regulations of the game. “The club is open to all and does not charge a membership fee. Those completely new to the world of board gaming are also welcome. We ensure the games are explained to them and they can experiment as they play,” says Padma. The games played include Dungeons & Dragons, Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Agricola and Dominion Board Game.

Weekend Fun Club This club was started with a single objective- having fun and creating memories. Members organise weekend trips, sports events, parties, dinner gettogethers and more. “The club was formed with an intention to help working professionals get a chance to forget work stress and add some fun to their lives. We started around two years ago, and now have around 2,000 members. We inform the members about the weekend plans through our social media page. People

come if they are interested in that particular activity,” says Nishi Kant, founder of the club. The club comprises of people from all age groups belonging to different walks of life. They get together often and share a strong bond. “We have members from every age group, there are students, professionals and housewives. We celebrate every festival with equal enthusiasm. We organise dandiya nights, new year parties and many other cultural activities,” says Nishi.

The Marathi Film Club was founded with an aim to promote Marathi cinema. The members screen Marathi films and hold discussions where everyone present expresses their opinion on the film. The club has over 100 members within the city and wants to expand all over Maharashtra. “We support Marathi films. We also invite actors to our screenings to talk about their upcoming films. So far, we have had actors like Swapnil Joshi, Madhura Velankar, Mrunal Kulkarni, Priya Bapat at our club,” says Shrikant Chandane, founder of Marathi Film Club. To create awareness about the club, members hold screenings at various colleges too. “We want to give access to everyone and create an audience for Marathi films. We call celebrities to discuss Marathi cinema, and hold question-answer session with them,” adds Chandrakant.

The Toastmasters Club provides a supportive and positive learning experience through which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in increased self-confidence and better personal growth. The education programme is an important part of every Toastmaster’s journey and is a critical aspect of every club meeting. Tushar Sonje says, “The Toastmasters Education Programme is based on a proven curriculum that enables you to develop communication and leadership skills one step at a time. It is built on four guiding principles that have been in place since Toastmasters was founded in 1924 Experiential Learning: we learn by doing, by giving speeches and fulfilling leadership roles, we practice and improve; Self-paced Program: we learn best at our own pace and comfort level; Peer Feedback: through

honest and supportive peer evaluation, we grow and improve and experienced members help us achieve our goals.” The club holds regular meetings that help prepare speeches, evaluations, impromptu speaking ability followed by reports and rewards. Members also organise educational sessions and theme-based meetings that help members get more from Toastmasters Club. “Within Toastmasters you can learn, unlearn and relearn many things. As a software engineer, I need to interact with customers who are located all over the world. Toastmasters helped me become a better communicator and that helped me while interacting with customers. At a personal level, I learnt the art of leadership from Toastmasters and now I can build a team, delegate tasks, take ownership, and help the club achieve even more success,” adds Tushar.

Pune Movie Buffs Pune Movie Buffs is all about bringing together a diverse group of people with a passion for great cinema. See a film and then go to dinner with your fellow movie buffs and discuss cinema. “You don’t need to be a film expert to join the group. We all just enjoy seeing films and talking about them. The main idea behind creating this group is to create a community where people can discuss cinema,” says Ashwin Mathew, the founder of the group. The group is small and is still growing. They conduct screenings at Lost the Plot in Aundh. “We are a group of just six, but we want to expand the club. We plan on inviting film directors to our sessions to talk about their work. We have discussions on various film themes like romance, drama, action and horror films,” Ashwin adds.

Risha Kadam creates 3D baby hand and feet impressions. She talks about her love for the art that’s become her profession Zainab Kantawala @kantawalazainab

t is just impossible to freeze time, it simply runs away. When it comes to babies, you want to hold time and cherish each and every moment even more. Risha Kadam, a 3D sculpture artist has a way to do just that. She creates life like sculptures of baby’s hands and feet, that gives out the minutest details, including the lines and creases. Each piece by Risha evokes admiration as much as excitement. Her youngest subject has been a five-hourold baby. She makes art for adults too, but its The process new borns that Risha has worked with the most. After the birth of her daughter, she was keen on hardly takes a preserving the childhood moments forever and minute. Being for that she found the most creative and unique way possible. “I wanted to create something that a mother, I am would bring back memories of Kyra’s childhood. extra careful I was always inclined towards art, and that led about the to learning this form. I attended a 3D sculpture course and tried the art on my daughter. In the safety of the beginning, I experimented with a lot of things child and tried it all on my family members. When I gained experience, I took this up as a profession,” — Risha Kadam says Risha. It isn’t always working with babies though and that requires a lot of patience, Risha agrees. “I have always been a baby person. But, yes, I have to be patient while dealing with new born babies. It is not easy to make a mother comfortable, while you are holding their baby’s hand and putting it into a mould. I have to make them trust me first”.

Risha, therefore, prefers to visit clients in the comfort of their home, or even at a hospital to capture the imprints of the little one’s hands or feet. She dips the hand, or feet, in the moulding with an impression material, that is non-toxic, biodegradable and absolutely safe for the baby’s skin. “The process hardly takes a minute. Being a mother, I am extra careful about the safety of the child. It takes a day to form a moulding, then buffing, cleaning, drying and finishing takes another 20 days. Afterwards, I frame the sculpture according to the clients specification; some add pictures, while others even write poems. There is a unique exclusivity to this art,” she adds. The 3D sculpture is then finished with silver, copper, bronze or even 24 carat gold, depending on the client’s budget. Since Risha understands the emotion that goes behind, it shows in her detailed approach. A month later the sculpture is ready to be packed in a custom made box. Risha has, in fact, also taken impressions of the hands of Bollywood personalities, Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao. The price range for her creations starts from Rs 12,000. “It’s all personalised. The art will not only capture the minutest details of the chubby hands and feet, but also capture the most peaceful moments of your bundle of joy,” Risha says. zainab.kantawala@goldensparrow.com

Tales of war, innovations, brainpower and economics

BOOKS

G

o back in time to the Kurukshetra war, learn how innovators innovate. Want to know how food can increase your brainpower or why fl ight attendants aren’t tipped? It’s assorted fare from the IANS bookshelf to keep you company this weekend. Take a look.

THE THIRTEENTH DAY  A STORY OF THE KURUKSHETRA WAR Author: Aditi Iyengar; Publisher: Rupa; Pages: 246; Price: Rs.295 It was the tenth night of the great war between the Pandavas and the Kauravas. Bhishma, the venerable patriarch of the families, lies fatally wounded on the plains of Kurukshetra. While on his deathbed he offers Radheya, his nemesis, a chance to rule the Kuru kingdom by capturing Yudhishthira. Meanwhile his young and impulsive nephew, Abhimanyu, a warrior prince, dreams of glory and yearns for a chance to save the Pandava cause. And when the lives of these three warriors - Yudhishthira, Radheya and Abhimanyu - collide brutally on the 13th day, history is irrevocably changed. Th is book attempts to reimagine one of India’s greatest epics like never before to reveal how stories are created, how fact becomes fiction, how history becomes mythology and how men become legends. GRAIN BRAIN Authors: David Perlmutter and Kristin Loberg; Publisher: Yellow Kite; Pages: 323; Price: Rs.399 Renowned neurologist and author Perlmutter proves in this book that the dysfunction of brain starts from daily bread. The author blows the lid off a topic that has been buried for too long: gluten and carbs destroy your brain. He explores that not just unhealthy carbs, but even healthy ones like whole grain can cause dementia, anxiety, chronic headaches, depression and other conditions related to the brain. The book helps its readers with a four-week diet, supplements and an exercise programme for a healthy brain and how to protect and improve its functioning. The book proves that by changing what one eats, life can get longer and healthier.

INDIAN INNOVATORS; Author: Akshat Agrawal; Publisher: Jaico; Pages: 210; Price: Rs.299 Th is book chronicles the journey of 20 individuals who have created cutting-edge products with global appeal. The interesting part is that the innovators come from diverse backgrounds - from those who hold a PhD to those who have had no formal education at all. Despite the differences, the book explores how the passion to innovate united them to fight adversities and to dream for a better world. The products range from a haptic shoe for the visually impaired and offl ine internet on mobile phones to low cost sanitary pad-making machines. Each of the stories celebrates the spirit of these individuals, who are fast breaking the status quo in the Indian innovation landscape.

WHEN TO ROB A BANK: THE FREAKOPEDIA Authors: Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner; Publisher: Allen Lane; Pages: 387; Price: Rs.625 Th is book is one of the series of books from the authors of Freakonomics. The authors, one being an economist and another being a writer, have interbred pop culture and economics to give it an interesting spin. Th is book speaks of facts and all things fun, combining them with the economics behind them. Know more of things like this: Why don’t fl ight attendants get tipped? Why does KFC always run out of fried chicken? THE SIEGE OF KRISHNAPUR Author: J.G. Farrell; Price: Rs.996 India, 1857—the year of the Great Mutiny, when Muslim soldiers turned in bloody rebellion on their British overlords. Th is time of convulsion is the subject of J. G. Farrell’s The Siege of Krishnapur, widely considered one of the finest British novels of the last fi fty years. Farrell’s story is set in an isolated Victorian outpost on the subcontinent. Rumors of strife fi lter in from afar, and yet the members of the colonial community remain confident of their military and, above all, moral superiority. But when they find themselves under actual siege, the true character of their dominion—at once brutal, blundering, and wistful—is soon revealed.

Essa Duhaime’s warm, passionate and contagious energy might just inspire you to become the diva you’ve always wanted to be By Zainab Kantawala @kantawalazainab

L

et your body sing to the music and your moves will lights up the essence of your heart,” exclaims Essa Duhaime, a well-known belly dancer from the city. The danseuse is a pioneer belly dancer who is working hard to take the art form to new levels. While working on her performance, Essa focuses not just on the choreography but also works towards improvising her moves as well as costumes. Born in Quebec, Canada, Essa has made Pune her home over the last few years.

The Indian audience is a little less welcoming of belly dancing. Sometimes it is people’s conservative mindset that stops them from learning the art form.

ANIRUDDHA RAJANDEKAR

S h e believes she was born to be a performing artist. Her tryst with dance began when she was only five years old and that was pretty much when she decided that she wanted to be a dancer when she grew up. Having dabbled with ballet and jazz, Essa even learned gymnastics, funk, hip hop and break dance before finding belly dance. “I found my true calling when I was introduced to belly dancing by my teacher. I was hooked right away but found it hard to dedicate time to classes so my learning process was gradual. I practiced a lot on my own when I couldn’t attend classes,” she recalls. Over time, Essa has studied and practised various forms of belly dancing practised across the world, including Turkish Rom Gypsy and Turkish Cabaret, Egyptian Raks Sharqi, Lebanese Folk Style and even American Tribal Style belly dancing. She has trained and studied with world masters such as Rachel Brice, Issam Houshan from the Bellydance Superstars, Mahmoud Reda, Tito Seif , Nada El Masriya, Fifi Abdou, Aziza, Yousry Sharif, Didem, Bozenka among others. “I was always a tomboy but through belly dance I got in touch with my feminine side,” Essa says, smiling warmly. The danseuse has performed at HipNosis, an international belly dancing festival held in Bangalore, apart from representing India at the International Belly Dance Festival held in China and Canada. Essa has also choreographed dance moves for the New York-based rapper Shabaam Sahdeeq’s music video. She was, in fact, only a step away from appearing on the dance reality show, India’s Got Talent. “Unfortunately, I had to step back because I was born in Canada. I’m quite for dance reality shows since they encourage talent and provide a platform for novice performers. A number of my students have participated in shows like Boogie Woogie and Footloose,” Essa shares. Despite all her achievement, Essa points out that it will take a while for the Indian audience to fully appreciate belly dancing. “The Indian audience is a little less welcoming of belly dancing. Sometimes it is people’s conservative

mindset that stops them from learning the art form. I have had to alter my costume a number of times in order to fit into the Indian perception,” explains Essa. The conservative attitude has not deterred the performer though. In fact, at her dance class, Diva Bellydance Academy, she hopes to emotionally and physically empower learners

through dance. “Belly dance moves are about moving different body parts like hips, stomach, shoulders and chest with grace and sensuality. The dance has special emphasis on hips and muscle control,” says Essa as she explains the essence of the dance form. zainab.kantawala@goldensparrow.com

An evening out at a popular lounge brought lovers and long-lost friends together. Of course, everyone made sure they stepped onto the dance floor looking absolutely dapper

Hey, good looking! By Manasi Shroff

T

he party starts when the sun sets and at Stone Water Grill a party quickly transforms into a celebration of life itself. Happy faces swaying to house music and stylish people rocking the dance floor make this place a popular hangout. It was the perfect evening to let the dresses go short while the wine complimented the mood. As couples made their way to the dance floor together, a bunch of friends group-hugged each time the DJ dished out an old favourite. Surely, since the mood was set for a romantic evening, we spotted the best dressed guy and girl together on a date. Anushree Tak and Amit Mendiratta sure did look classy together. An

Infosys employee, Anushree Tak kept it short with her peplum little black dress and totally rocked the sexy deep back. The red and golden thong slip-ons added the perfect amount of bling to her look while the black and gold stud earrings were just the right accessory for the peplum cut dress. Amit accompanied Anushree in a black and grey floral tee. It isn’t quite conventional for a guy to wear a bigleaf motif tee but Amit did a fi ne job of carrying the look off. The cool tee was paired with light blue distressed jeans and casual runners. Well, his fit personality only complimented Amit’s look perfectly and the chunky black strapped watch was just enough for him to stay co-ordinated with Anushree’s look.

The dying craft of creating a grinding pot By Nirbhay Shah It has been a while since the homemaker moved away from the grinding stone and mortar-pestle and chose the comfort of mixers and blenders of every kind. The whizzing of the gadgets has brought a sense of loom over artisans like Laxmi Pawar, Gangaram Balu Dhotre and Tukaram Jadhav, who are facing the heat due to vanishing trade. “This business was started by my great grandfather. Since then the craft has become our only mode to earn a living. My sons Raju and Santosh are keen on carrying the family tradition ahead. All of us work together in the same area,” says 60-year-old Laxmi Pawar. Gangaram and Tukaram share a deep love for their craft and earn a living out of it. However, many a times

they have incurred losses and have been forced to sell their products at a marginal rate. “A lot of hard work goes into this. We have to shape the clay, heat it at high temperature in a kiln, and harden it. But now-adays people prefer a mixer grinder over the traditional grind pot,” complains Gangaram. He has almost given up on his trade bringing in any money for the family instead Gangaram hopes his daughter and son would do something big in life. The artisans have to travel all the way to Malegaon and Baramati to procure the stones that costs them between Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000. They sell the earthen pots for Rs 100-Rs 200, depending on the size. “In order to feed the family we even sell them for Rs 50,” adds Tukaram. feedback.tgs@goldensparrow.com

Kate Moss hates being pampered Supermodel Kate Moss hates being pampered and would prefer to spend all her free time with her 12-year-old daughter Lila. While the 40-year-old is used to having her hair and makeup fussed over on photoshoots, Moss says she dislikes indulging in beauty treatments, reports femalefirst.co.uk. The supermodel, who had Lila with her ex beau Jefferson Hack, said: “I always like a bit of dark red paint on my nails. If I’m not doing them myself I go to a nice little salon in Primrose Hill (London)- it’s totally no-nonsense. I hate all that pampering business, I prefer hanging out with Lila to sitting through a long manicure.” Moss also refuses to spend time planning her holiday wardrobe and insists she could get ready for a trip at a moment’s notice. “I don’t really plan my holiday wardrobe. I’ve

collected it over the years and have favourite pieces I always take, though I buy a new bikini every time. “I’d throw in black jeans, grey jeans, some T-shirts, ?a jacket and flats - or a bikini if we’re going somewhere hot. I have a travel bag ready to go, with all my beauty essentials and passport. “I don’t think I massively over-pack but I’m definitely not a one-case kind of girl. If the plane lost all my luggage and I was somewhere sunny like Ibiza I would just get a bikini, shorts, T-shirt and sandals. If it was somewhere colder like New York I’d go for jeans, jacket and a pair of Louboutins,” she said. — IANS

Channing Tatum puts on strip show for wife

Actor Channing Tatum puts on strip shows for his wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum because she likes to “take advantage” of his former career. Asked if he strips for his wife, he said: “Of course! She’s got a stripper for a husband and she’s not gonna take advantage of that.” While he is happy to strip for Jenna, the 35-year-old star finds it tiresome when his fans ask him to perform for them, reports femalefirst.co.uk. “That happens every time I walk out of my house. It can get old. I’m not a monkey!,” Tatum told Empire magazine. Channing decided to become a stripper because he wanted to “experience madness” and had a lot of “good times”, though he knew it wouldn’t be his career forever. He said: “I’d no idea I wanted to act. I went looking for crazy. All I knew was I wanted to experience madness. And it was madness. “It was women, money, good times. But that’s what ‘Magic Mike’ was about, at what point have I had my fill of this? I can’t tell you I had any big dreams. But I knew I wasn’t going to get a college degree.” — IANS
