Sonakshi doesn’t feel insecure in muti-starrer
Sonakshi Sinha will be seen in the forthcoming film Action Jackson and the actress says she doesn’t feel insecure due to the presence of multi-stars in the movie. “In my four years’ career, this is my first multi-starrer. I’ve always played solo heoine. But the fact is even in this film, I was very pampered,” Sonakshi, who will be seen along with Yami Gautam and Manasvi Mamgai in Action Jackson, told IANS. “I do films with all my sense. When I signed the film, I knew there are two more girls in it. But I am not the kind of person who gets insecure,” she added. “Every actor is different and their personality is different. So, you can’t compare. I have gotten along well with all my co-stars. From senior actors, you get to learn a lot. But with the young lot, you learn things together,” said the 27-year-old. IANS

P
ost 91, the restaurant at Baner, has been quick off the mark, and has introduced a new menu, just as the winter chill is setting in Pune. The winter menu takes into consideration health issues and makes use of the seasonal ingredients that are now available and are popular with the customers. Post 91 believes that high protein and high calorie foods are the way to go in winter, not to mention dishes that are high on taste and flavour. Chef Kiran Patil says, "Customers prefer grilled, fried and spicy food and we have ensured that our winter menu has a wide and wholesome variety of such fare." We started off with Yakitori, that is
Japanese grilled chicken on skewers and Chicken Pandanu, marinated chicken with Thai herbs and spices, wrapped in a Pandanu leaf. Chef Patil recommended the Korean grilled lamb chops, that are marinated overnight, and coconut prawns, served with pinacolada sauce.

THRILL OF DRIVING
200 times better?
No, this is not the S-Class. Ouseph Chacko gets acquainted with the spanking new Mercedes-Benz C-Class I can’t help but equate the C 200 to the dollops of ‘maska’ Vohuman Cafe serves Above: Cabin mimics that of the S-Class to offer a classy feel, apart from looking a lot more modern than its competition. P
une is still sleeping as I thumb the beautifully crafted start/stop button. The turbo-petrol is silent, the light steering is making easy work of maneuvering the narrow lanes and the cool blue waterfall lighting makes the interiors soothing. Forget the way the car looks, a lot of people will fall for the insides of the new C-Class. It’s seductively styled, built like a Merc ought to be and there’s not a millimetre of what I would call low-rent. The seats are proper chairs and the firmness in the old C’s cushions has been replaced by plush, supportive sumptuousness. Even more incredible is the way switches and the vents click – it is a sign of the tactility engineered into the car. Even little things like the slick driver interface and the 8.4-inch screen point to the man hours gone into getting the interiors right. Getting the dashboard to look somewhere between youthful and the stately, that must have taken some careful thinking. It feels expensive and the C 200 is expensive, as it has been launched only as a CBU currently, with the diesel and CKD versions to come later. We’re now accelerating past that famous Irani breakfastery, Vohuman Cafe, and I can’t
Specification: Mercedes-Benz C-Class C200 Engine In-line 4-cylinder, 1991cc turbo-petrol Transmission 7G-Tronic Plus 7-Speed auto Power 181bhp @ 5500rpm Torque 300Nm @ 1200-4000rpm Weight 1445kg 0-100kmph 7.8 seconds Top speed 237kmph Price `40.9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi)
help but equate the C 200 to the dollops of ‘maska’ they serve. It is that smooth. The four-cylinder, 1991cc turbo-petrol barely purrs when you accelerate and mid-range feels strong. It packs a satisfying punch every time I want to get away from some biker who has come uncomfortably close. I really like the gearbox – the 7G-Tronic Plus has been recalibrated and it feels alert. Unlike Mercs of old, tugging on the paddleshifter provokes immediate response. It even second-guesses you correctly by downshifting to the desired gear depending on how much pressure you put on the throttle. It feels effortless and when you switch to one of the more aggressive drive modes (there’s Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual), engine and gearbox responses sharpen up even more. None of the modes have an effect on the suspension though. The old C-Class seemed to find a perfect balance between a supple low speed ride and stellar high-speed body control, but this new one feels a little confused. Over Pune’s lumpy roads, there’s a hint of float and bobbing and despite the relatively high profile tyres the suspension crashes noisily at times. You hear it more than you feel it and I think this is due to the amount of aluminium used in the chassis – almost half of it is aluminium and it doesn’t have the sound absorbing qualities of steel. It’s also why
there’s more road noise than I ever remember in a C-Class as we hit cruising speed on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. But its the aluminium in the chassis has also helped make this new C-Class 100kg lighter and the C200 sprints to 100kmph in just 7.8 seconds. At speed the suspension finally realises it belongs to a Merc and the C-Class feels supremely stable. Gear ratios are long enough to allow relaxed cruising and the gearbox alert enough for a quick downshift. We get to Lonavala an hour after leaving home. Ramakrishna Restaurant is one of those places that let you gawk at your car while you grab breakfast. Except for the rear, I have to say the rest of the C-Class looks stunning. I love the two-slat grille, the aggressive bumper and swooping lines along the sides. Around Lonavala, the road is full of corners, tricky ones at that, ones which will put into sharp focus how much fun the new C’s Modular Rear-drive Architecture (MRA) chassis is. This new C 200 has great balance and the new multi-link front axle allows tyres to bite and turn like no C-Class before. It doesn’t understeer much or oversteer either. The party pooper is the all-new electrically assisted steering – its accurate but doesn’t have the sharp, point and shoot nature of a BMW 3 Series. It is a lot more involving than the Audi A4’s lifeless steering though. This new C-Class is 95mm longer and 40mm wider, and with a wheelbase that’s 80mm longer, there’s more space at the back to stretch out too. The rear cushions are comfortable but the seat base is a tad short. But, with the three-zone climate control set to what I like and the superb 13-speaker Burmester audio easily drowning out road and suspension noise, I’m feeling rather relaxed. It’s when I’m back home that it hits me – I’ve grumbled about the less than perfect cabin noise and the lighter build but this C-Class, on the whole, rises way above all that. It looks stunning and the interiors are fantastic – your neighbours might even think you’ve bought an S-Class! The C-Class is a great blend of cutting edge and traditional and that’s exactly what makes it stand a class apart. ouseph@evo.in

enelli is an Italian brand with a history as one of the oldest motorcycle manufacturers in the world. And what we’re riding this day is unique: a made-inChina Italian-designed inline-four upright adventure tourer, the Benelli BJ600GS-A or BJ600GT. First things first, because it’s the first thing asked: yes, it is made mostly in China, and will likely be assembled here by DSK Motowheels. But you can’t really tell with a cursory glance. The BJ600GS-A is an impressive-looking machine. It looks (and feels) larger than it’s 600cc displacement would indicate. It has a massive 27 litre fuel tank, beefy 50mm inverted front forks and a trick-looking Banana swingarm with an offset, directly mounted shock, reminiscent of the Kawasaki Ninja 650. The front section of the frame is of a trellis design, something of a Benelli trademark. The front is finished off with a nice looking bikini fairing housing a projector headlamp, while the rear gets a trendy under-body exhaust and spacious plastic panniers. All is not well, however, once you start taking in the details. The console, for instance, is bare and basic. Looking at the bike sideon, inconsistencies are apparent. Welds are average and the swingarm looks handpainted. The exhaust is the worst offender, as is evident from the photos. Thankfully, the visual question-marks don’t translate into any red flags while out and about. The BJ600GS-A is a heavy bike. It’s a real effort moving the bike around at parking speeds and god help you if you’re stupid enough to park nose-in at a kerb. The wide, comfortable seat is probably ideal for inter-city commutes, but splays the rider’s thighs out enough to make planting one’s feet securely on the ground impossible. Once you’re off, however, the weight simply disappears. We rode the BJ600GS-A with a full tank of fuel, which is carried high up on the bike, but it felt planted, almost graceful. The inline-four 600cc engine makes most of its power in the upper rev range. This means that down low, there isn’t much poke, but the gearing is satisfactory; one doesn’t need to slip the clutch much even at low speeds. It sounds like an inline-four, but doesn’t really go like one. Doing our tracking shots was a dawdle on the bike at 40-60kmph, despite the high centre of gravity. You wouldn’t want to slam the bike down from side to side in a chicane, but it glides gracefully from corner to corner with a certain poise and confidence that you don’t really experience with smaller, lighter motorcycles. While it lacks ABS, braking on the BJ600GS-A is effective and progressive. The tyres use a touring compound, and I had

no trouble with grip even on rough, dusty roads. Ride is pliant and comfortable, as is expected of a bike with this intent. While the panniers look like they’re made of cheap plastic, they are in fact, very solid. The BJ600GS-A, when it is officially launched, is likely to be the cheapest middisplacement motorcycle in the market. With its upright touring stance, it will be a unique proposition as well. It has enough equipment and presence to turn heads, which it did on our test ride. Everywhere. As a soft-roader, for 1: Metal bits are a bit inconsistent in finish 2: Plastic panniers feel flimsy but are very sturdy and reasonably spacious
someone who wants to do some comfortable two-up touring without leaving behind a potato-potato doppler effect, this Benelli is a good choice. Your other options in this genre are far pricier. The downsides are down to the heavy weight and relative lack of power. The China-Italy schizophrenia is palpable in the build quality, but let’s face it: if it weren’t for the Eastern investment, this bike would never have been built. More power to Benelli, then. Particularly this one, we wish. tushar@evo.in

L
age Raho Munnabhai was the immensely entertaining fi lm of two taporis, Munnabhai and Circuit, smitten by the sensuous voice of a jockey on FM radio. With as many as EIGHT FM stations on air in Pune how many wanna-be Vidya Balans, do you think, are rocking the city air? And consequently, how many would stand smitten by air waves emanating through Pune FM? To be sure, there’s a lot of small talk on FM; a lot of time-pass and a lot of fl irty, informal back-slapping talk too. One would only want to caution the Munnabhais and Circuits of Pune not to get carried away by RJs who talk the way they do to grab attention and climb up the popularity charts to rake in the moolah. The RJs run by various names- there’s someone who calls herself ShoShoSho Shonali; there’s Shrikant, MJTia, RJ Smita from Radio Mirchi, RJ Sangram from Red Fm, Filmy Chokri RJ Apurva from Radio City and a dozen others.

"I am 'the' favoruite among Pune radio jockeys for my humour." -RJ Sangram
RJ Sangram: Humour, well-read, witty RJ Sangram
RJ Smita
Undoubtedly, listeners have their favourites. Networking engineer Pinaki Chatterjee says, “My job means working at odd hours. In my free time, the last thing I want to do is switch on the television or laptop for recreation. For me, the radio is a real saviour. No strain on the eyes or mind. I switch it on and the music automatically relaxes me. What’s more, we have some great RJs who do wonders to lighten up my mood.” The 27-year-old’s favourite is RJ Sangram of Red FM, and Chatterjee catches his show on most days. “His show Morning No 1, is like my morning cup of tea. That is the time when I am heading back from work and it gives me a summary of what has happened while I was stuck at work. His quirky humour and vast knowledge of things are what set him apart. He is a complete package. Above all, you feel connected to him. He is very active on his Facebook page and is quick to reply and interact with his fans. It is like I know him." Software developer Soham Shinde loves classic Marathi hit songs. “RJ Smita (of Radio Mirchi) not only plays soulful music, but she also informs you about the nuances of the music and gives trivia on the singer and the song. Today, we have radio stations blasting Bollywood numbers throughout the day and then we have Smita who is bringing to us these classics. Her voice is very soothing and she always manages to hold my attention. Her style of carrying forward the show in a flow is what I like,” says Shinde. Durva Deshmukh, is a diehard fan of RJ Apurva (of Radio City), her casual style and Bollywood gossip. “I am a complete Bollywood person and never miss Filmy Chokri Apurva’a show for anything. She gives you an update on everything that happens in the lives of the stars and actors. I do not have to wait for the newspaper or monthly film magazines to know it all. I also love Ranbir Kapoor just as much as she does!” says the 19-year-old student.
RJ Apurva: Bollywood drama and gossip
IT professional Balaji Phunde, 29, is an ardent follower of RJ Sangram, “He has this knack of getting you to think out of the box. He is extremely passionate about what he does and that shows when he talks and interacts online. He is also very witty when it comes to interviews and knows exactly how to get information out of the interviewee.” Purchase executive Laxman Kusekar likes both Smita and Sangram. “I like Smita’s melodious voice and Sangram’s witty humour. They both are different and are the best at what they do. It is a hard to pick one of them as my favourite.”
Jockeys speak
Smita started out in 2002 when Radio Mirchi was launched in Pune with her show. Twelve years later she is still with the same radio station and one of the most popular RJs in the city. "While doing my M Sc, I had planned on a teaching career before I randomly walked into a radio audition," says Smita, whose shows like ‘Purani Jeans’, ‘Nineties Not Out’ and ‘Khoobsurat’ are extremely popular. "I have recently taken on the job of executive producer of the company and do just one Sunday late night show called ‘Chanderi Nights’," Smita said. Smita is thrilled that she is one of the favourite RJ for Pune’s radio buffs. "I am thankful to all my listeners who have heard me through 12 years. It is great to know that Pune loves me and though a generation has changed since I started, people still enjoy my work," she said. Sangram, who has no doubts about his rapport with his listeners, said, “I am sorry, I am not one of the favourite RJs in the city. I am ‘the’ favourite! The reason, you ask? Well, humour is defined as the difference between what is and what ought to be. So, this is the gap I thrive in. It is a space I call my own. I give people a perspective on various topics on what it is and what it could be. This gets them to relate to me.” anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com
Radio ga ga
RJ Smita: Chirpiness, humble and fluency.
Pinaki Chatterjee
What should change? There are two sides to a coin and to every story as well. While most of the people we spoke to, gave a thumbs up to the radio stations and the jockeys, some are also irked by all the commercials (advertisements) and the repetitive play lists. Chatterji says, “The songs are often the same that we heard the previous evening. I can understand when it is of an upcoming film but we still want more variety in the song selection.” Kusekar has a suggestion about all the advertisements that disrupt the flow of music. “They should have a time slot of adverts. The rest of the day should be for music and other shows,” he says.
