However the movie may be of such academic value that it may soar above the head. Birdman willingly takes this flight. The viewer may be pushed into a new kind of cinema with, but he or she comes out baffled. Directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, the film is crafted beyond the ordinariness of a chronological order and yet is a continuous linear narration. The film looks like it’s been shot in one day, in real time, giving the viewers a glimpse of what’s going on behind the Broadway curtains. Protagonist Riggan Thompson played by Michael Keaton’s mindset,

his imaginary world and traces of split-personality gets beautifully highlighted through this technique. It grows on the views, the turmoil of the mind is a first-hand experience of frustration, fading stardom, regrets, guilt and metaphorical and literally escapades. Another highlight of the film is Mike Shiner, played by Edward Norton, a seasoned Broadway actor whose whims are dangerous, embarrassing and very popular. If it gets accepted, doesn’t that make this hybrid form a well defined genre in itself? It defeats the purpose. In the end, the movie ends up being neutral. It does not evoke a particular emotion. It will be wrong to say it fails, it does not. A single interpretation is miniscule but individual. If there is no retention or more importantly no story that can charm, it ends up being stagnant. It has theatrics, it has valuable personal struggle and it has drama quite literally. However, the film, as a cinema package falls a little short than its nominated alleys for the lack of its after-effect. To quote a dialogue from the film itself, “when an artist fails, he becomes a critic”, what right does that leave anybody to put forth an individualistic opinion. But the movie narrates an incident about fractured identities and evolving out of the circumstance to create a new one. yashdaiv@gmail.com

THRILL OF DRIVING

Better I by tweaks The Xylo gets a host of improvements under the skin. Ouseph Chacko drives on to see if it’s any better.

Verdict

+ Improved road manners, space - Not as car like to drive as rivals

TOD rating ;;;42

t doesn’t look like it, but this is the updated Mahindra Xylo. The facelift is almost inconsequential – there’s just a chrome ‘moustache’ over the grille, full length decals and that’s it. Oh, the interiors also get a new beige and black theme, so on the face of it, not much has improved. However, it’s what you can’t see that’s been thoroughly revised and to know what’s been improved, you need to start at the front independent suspension. There are new polyurethane bushes that improve the Xylo’s bump stop characteristics, the lower control arm bushes are stiffer, the coil springs on the front struts are stiffer and the stabiliser bar is now thicker. At the rear, there’s a new anti-roll bar and the coil spring and shock absorber run stiffer rates. There’s also a new polyurethane bump stop that eliminates a lot of the transmission of jolts to the cabin when the suspension bottoms out over bad roads. The improvements are apparent and most noticeable when you’re travelling at speed. The old Xylo’s tendency to bob and wallow has mostly been cured, there’s a new-found stability through corners and the body does stay a lot flatter when you really start to lean on it. You can now confidently hammer it over bad patches of road without having ‘heart-in-the-mouth’ moments. Still, the Xylo remains a tall vehicle on a relatively narrow track, so it does have its limitations. It still does not have the absolute confidence inspiring manners of say the Toyota Innova or the Maruti Ertiga which

are far more car-like to drive. Also marginally improved is the ride but there are still some cross cabin shudders that are typical of a body-on-ladder frame chassis. The good news is that the Xylo’s strengths remain – it can seat eight people comfortably (seven with our car’s captains chairs) and that mHawk engine on this topend H9 variant remains torquey as ever. The high driving position and relatively tight turning circle also make it easy to maneuver and park in urban conditions. Prices haven’t been announced at the time of going to print, but we expect a marginal increase over the current Xylo’s `12.9 lakh sticker. Overall, the new Xylo is a definite improvement and one that will help keep it fresh till the new Xylo comes out some time in the latter part of 2016. ouseph@evo.in

Js are in a constant and growing demand these days. In fact no occasion seems complete without a DJ, be it a wedding reception, birthday party or a weekend club blast. In fact, every second person in urban India seems to be a DJ, with new and fancy names popping up everyday and every minute. So is being a DJ so simple, that anyone can do it? Professional DJs of the city beg to differ. Deejaying is an art and not everyone can do it, they say. According to them a keen ear for music and the ability to understand a crowd’s sensibility is what makes a DJ click. Pune’s top four DJs tell us about their mantra for success, and what makes them special to the party crowd.

Twenty-two-year-old Sukhvinder Gujral, aka DJ Sukhi started deejaying in 2003, and got his first residency in 2004. But the paradox is that Sukhi was not aiming to be a DJ. “In school, I wanted to be a game designer or something like that, since I was a complete computer geek,” says Sukhi, who has a BSc in computers. Avneet Sawhney’s aka Sonu’s career as a DJ began in 1996, when he was just 14. He has never looked back, and over the course of the last 18 years he has had a very enjoyable and music-filled years, during which he has attained the pinnacle of popularity and fame in the city’s party circles. A self-taught deejay, Avneet, who has a BCom degree from Ness Wadia College says, “I would watch my friend who was a DJ, and I learnt the art bit by bit. My friends and I were obsessive party animals and I was a keen observer of what the DJs were playing, and how they handled the equipment and sound.” Abhishek Mantri, 32, founder of Mantri Music Mantra, wanted to join the Merchant Navy when he was in standard X. Deejaying happened by chance when the DJ at a party he was at, disappeared. “I went up to the mixer and DJ console. It fascinated me and I decided to take it up. I was 15 and self taught. I then started learning the art from a few online course (2002-2003) and international artistes who came to the city,” says Mantri, who has a BCom degree from Ness Wadia College.

vibrant, positive, full of energy and good vibes. The crowds is educated thanks to music channels like VH1 and the internet. With Pune being a major culture and music destination, there are many artistes touring the country, which act as an additional factor. “But I miss the era of the 90s and early 2000s when people actually knew their music and artistes, and did not go by what was trendy,” he says. The music scene in Pune has not evolved as much as it should have, the music makers believe. A Wanowrie resident, Abhishek says, “People come up to me and say play new retro. How can retro be new? People are not evolved as yet. They will travel all the way to Goa and enjoy Sunburn but won’t enjoy the same music in Pune. It is the ambience, atmosphere and mood that help but I have a faithful following and stick to my genre no matter what. I do not play Bollywood.” Avneet has many funny anecdotes to recount. “People request for a song, but don’t even know its name and try to sing it out and get it totally wrong. Once a young guy in high spirits came up to the DJ console and asked for a drink. He thought the console was a bar. At a recent gig, someone came up to me and asked me if I was Virat Kohli.”

Idols and influences:

Sukhi is a huge Michael Jackson fan; in fact, he idolises him. But there are many other artistes he likes. “My family and friends are great inspirations,” he says. Abhishek is influenced by Moby, Deep Dish, Danny Tenaglia, Dennis Ferrer and Sebastien Leger. Avneet’s idols and influences happen to be mostly from the 90s. Artists and sports personalities like Freddie Mercury, John Lennon, Sachin Tendulkar, Paul van Dyke and Tiesto. “I think my immediate family and close friends inspire me the most. It’s because of them that I have been able to achieve what I have and last this long. They have supported me in what I love and that’s the most important inspiration for me and has kept me going.”

Advice for the aspiring:

Sukhi says, “Don’t get demotivated with all the struggle; be passionate about your work and have fun.” Abhishek believes in hard work to serve, to change and keep evolving. Avneet, 32, has trained over 100 aspiring DJs. Remember that you are playing music for others and their happiness matters. “Remember who you are and where you started. Deejaying is an art that requires great skill and technique.” anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com
