One-to-one training for children to improve their learning skills

We think playing and solving puzzles are ways to measure the cognitive skills in a person. However, it is not so. Everyone is equipped with 70 mental tools, out of which only seven are most important, like attention, processing speed, working memory, logical reasoning, visual processing and auditory processing. Moreover the sensory motor development is important for a child’s growth.
vinash Bartakke is the founderdirector of Neural Space, the only cognitive skill training centre in the country. Launched in 2011, the centre provides customised BrainRx programmes, with a license from LearningRx, a reputed brain training institute in the US. The LearningRx brain development programmes have been developed by Dr Ken Gibson. Based on over 30 years of research and clinical trials, they identify weak cognitive skills and correct them be means of intensive one-on-one game-like exercise. BrainRx can help in diagnosing and treating reading and learning difficulties, dyslexia, attention deficit disorder (ADD), memory problems, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), learning difficulties in maths (dysalculia) and problems caused by Traumatic Brain Learning Injuries (TBI). made Bartakke says, “Training is my easy core competency. Having worked for 17 years with ICICI Prudential in the field of training and development, the scope of application of Brain Training, extends from children to senior citizens.” He tied up with LearningRx, the only organisation in the The team at Neural Space world with a specific procedure for one-to-one training.
There is a tendency to equate academic achievements with cognitive skills, such as visual and auditory processing, logical reasoning and memory. Unless children are approached with a view to first training their cognitive skills, academics won’t improve. Besides cognitive training, environment and adequate training also plays a role. “Our trainers work on the core competency of
the child, which he will never forget in his life. The centre believes in imparting oneto one training with the child so that he can improve his core learning skills. Therefore, early detection can help a child to harness these qualities and which will make the child perform better in academics and in his life,” explains Bartakke. Bringing this out in a child will help him focus in his academics and life in a more positive way. The ability to focus continuously and paying attention plays a key role in a student’s life. In case of adults also, the use of mental abilities is important because after the age of 35, the decline of cognitive skills begin. BrainRx specialises in making kids and adults smarter through research based programs. These help in better absorption, retention and recall of inputs which has a direct affect in efficiency. The USP of the program is that it is result focused with a highly committed personal training. The focus is also on learning while you play method. It helps a child to develop his or her cognitive skills. Neural Space holds workshops in schools for teachers and students free of cost. There are 24 training procedures which take place in 72 hours. There are seven trainers trained by Bartakke himself. During the workshops, 30 students undergo training for one hour, six days a week. barnalee.handique@goldensparrow.com

With Khoobsurat, Disney ceremoniously goes desi and goes all wrong. The movie dangles between too many moments without taking any singular one to its fullest potential. The major problem is that the movie blurts its scenes and scenarios. From Sonam Kapoor’s character to the narrative, everything happens suddenly, without prelude, preparation or consideration. Love just happens, so do kidnappings and deals worth crores. Sonam Kapoor as Mili always trips when she runs into Prince Vikram (Fawad Afzal Khan), as does the film. The chemistry between the lead actors is non-existent, though Fawad looks plays the prince perfectly. The film drags on and a genuine laugh comes only just before the intermission. The film is a remake of the 1980 Hrishikesh Mukherjee classic, with the title denoting the protagonist Manju Dayal’s inner beauty often eclipsed by her playful and irreverent nature. In the 2014 version, Mili’s spontaneity, against the backdrop of a royal house’s ‘taur-tareeke’ is supposed to lend weight to the title. In its Disney avatar, the remake is lent glossy palaces, a prince, a queen, a butler, but no soul. In the end, you end up admiring the palace and the decor more than the scenes or the acting. It’s khoobsurat, but only in the glossy and superficial way.

@yash009
ANIRUDDHA RAJANDEKAR
Translator Leena Sohoni has been translating novels into Marathi for 25 years. She talks to Yash Daiv about the nuances of the endeavour and the cultural exchange it brings about
L
eena Sohoni’s (age 55) stint with translations began when she found her father’s diary in an attic. The diary had stories of war soldiers who fought during independence translated by him. Later, she went on to translate pieces of literature from all over the world, into Marathi. Her translations of Jeffery Archer’s To Cut a Long Story Short, Kane and Abel to the most recent The Accidental Prime Minister by Sanjay Baru have been on the Times Bestseller and Crossword Bestseller Lists. At her home in Bibwewadi, over a large mug of coffee, she speaks truthfully about translations in general. Excerpts from the conversation. From your first translation of Henry Denker’s Outrage (1989) to The Accidental Prime Minister (2014), how has it been translating books for over a quarter of a century? Every book has been a different experience. It has been an amazing journey which has given me an insight into different genres, styles of writing and mental
I translate for the pure joy of creation; the rest does not bother me
Write choice
What are the challenges that come with different genres? There is a challenge with every genre. My task is to make a faithful translation without giving the author’s content a different interpretation. For instance in Arvind Adiga’s The White Tiger, the hero belongs to a lower economic strata. It was necessary for me to travel into his mind to understand his thought process and then find suitable alternatives for all the uncouth remarks he makes. Political books pose a greater challenge. When I translated ‘Lajja’ Taslima Nasreen a political party thought I was endorsing a particular agenda. I got calls from them asking me deliver speeches. Do such reactions determine the success or failure of a translated book? I translate for the pure joy of creation; the rest does not bother me. As far as success and failure, it depends largely on how the reader interprets the text. Everybody thinks differently. A text is an open source of contemplation. Will it be safe to say that 100 per cent translation of any novel is then a myth? Word-to-word translation of any text is impossible. At the most, any translated novel can be 80-85 per cent true to the original. The rest goes away with the flux of the language. There can never be a word-to-word translation of anything. How has the Marathi-reading audience reacted to your work? I have a wonderful publisher. Mehta Publishing house ensures the books reach every corner of the state. People have called me throughout the day telling me that the Marathi rendition of works such as Not without My Daughter has moved them to tears. The language certainly has powers to incite emotions. I feel it has enriched the Marathi literary scenario. Translations bring cultures into cultures. In the bigger picture, do translations bring about cultural exchange? When you translated Sudha Murthy’s books, what kind of interaction did you have? I have received one of my best compliments from Sudha Murthy. During a speech, she claimed that I “know her heart”. Our conversations regarding her books have been in Marathi. Not many people know that she is fluent in the language. Our conversations gave me such insight into her work and the cultural nuances that she trusts me with the Marathi version of all her writing. And what about with international books? With international authors, a translation becomes a medium to reach a larger audience. Give us an instance… This was one of my most cherished incidents. Four years ago, when my idol Jeffery Archer was in the city, Sunil Mehta owner of Mehta Publishing House asked me if I would like to meet Archer. I was out of town but I could not miss out on this opportunity. I hopped on to a morning bus and reached Pune at around 10:00 am. We were supposed to meet him around 1 pm for 20 minutes. I was two Jeffery Archer translations old then, and showed him the copy of ‘To Cut a Long Story Short’. He was thrilled and enquired about the reach of the book. It turned out to be more than the population of England! He thanked me for such a [good] translation and gave me a copy of his the unreleased book ‘Prisoners of Birth.’ He requested me to translate it before its release. yashdaiv@gmail.com

ASHOK BANKER from Mumbai
Ashok Banker is a noted mythological fiction writer who has given us bestsellers such as The Ramayana series, Krishna Coriolis Series and the Mahabharata Series. Ashok feels his entire life is designed to leave him in a constant state of inspiration, but he finds motivation in this quote by Erica Jong: We write as leaves breathe. “Writing is breath to me,” he says. “I have to keep breathing to live, every minute, every day.” The 50-year-old writer works best within distraction. “Noise, confusion, people, dogs, kids, traffic, construction sounds, music — everything fades away the moment my fingertips touch the keyboard,” he says. Writing advice Athletes train hard daily. Singers do riyaaz. Actors rehearse. Writers can only become better writers by writing and reading. Staying on track Don’t get off track, ever. Don’t ever stop. Never give up. Never lose hope. Stay inspired. Find inspiration around you, in books, people, life, nature, whatever gets your engine running. Creativity is a perpetual motion machine if you nurture and feed it constantly. Best tip you’ve been given Read, read, read; write, write, write. Don’t write to publish; in fact, don’t bother about publication at all. Writing is its own reward, as is reading. Live to write and write to live. Manjiri Prabhu, co-founder and festival director of PILF, is noted for blending mystery with the esoteric in such books as The Cosmic Clues, The Astral Alibi and the Cavansite Conspiracy. The Shivaji Nagar resident focuses on writing that entertains but she also hopes that her books will create memories in the minds of people through characters that will live on forever. “Before I write, I like to go for a walk and tune in with nature, my one assured source of creative energy,” she says. “If I have a deadline, I write with a tight schedule; mostly from 10 am to 6 pm. But if I am left to write at will, it is late into the night. Basically, I am a moody, undisciplined writer.” Writing advice Always write from the heart.
“I have to still meet a writer who can give me that one awesome tip.” —Dr Manjiri
Staying on track Write from your heart, and you will automatically stay on track. If you want to write that book, you will. Best tip you’ve been given I have to still meet a writer who can give me that one awesome tip. Writing has taught you You are always on your own, in whichever world you choose — fiction or real.
“The only thing that can guarantee productivity is focus.” —Shatrujeet
PANKAJ SEKHSARIA from Hyderabad
SHATRUJEET NATH from Mumbai
A researcher, writer, photographer and environmentalist, 43-year-old Pankaj hopes he is able to reach out, share, tell stories and open new windows of opportunities through his work. He has written two non-fiction books set in the Andamans Island: Troubled Island and The Jarawa Tribal Reserve Dossier. His latest offering is a work of fiction also set in the Andamans called The Last Wave, an island novel. Early bird gets the verb in his case. “The couple of hours before the sun is up and life begins is my most productive time,” he says. “I re-visit what has already been written the day before and take it from there.
From writing advertisement copy to being a business journalist and finally an author, writing has been an integral part of 43-year-old Shatrujeet’s life. His notable works of fiction include The Karachi Deception and he is in the process of publishing The Guardians of Halahala, the first book of the epic fantasy, The Vikramaditya Trilogy. He starts writing as early as possible in the day, ideally right after breakfast. “The more I delay, the less I end up writing,” he says.
Writing advice Be very patient with yourself and with the writing. You can’t push it; we have to keep working, re-working and re-shaping the words, the sentences and the ideas.
Writing advice The more you write, the more you unlock, the easier the thoughts and words flow. It is as simple as that.
Best tip you’ve been given Show, don’t tell.
Staying on track The only thing that can guarantee productivity is focus. It is easy to get distracted or wait for one’s muse. But some days, the muse will just not show up. Those days, specifically, the writer must show up. Best tip you’ve been given It comes from Kurt Vonnegut: Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water. Writing has taught you Patience. Creating anything of value takes time.
Staying on track Straying is the best way to stay on track. That being said, a balance needs to be maintained between what a writer delivers and what the deliverables are. One has to be alive to those needs as well.
“Patience; also that things are not always in your control. ” Pankaj
Writing has taught you Patience; also that things are not always in your control.

features Stand up comic Daniel Fernandes, Kannan Gill and Biswa Rath in Pune for their show. We chat with Daniel on the comic scene in the city
Stand up for the comedian keep getting up on stage. Not just us, but every club and promoter on the scene is very supportive of new talent. It is up to the comedian to make that stage time count. There is a need for more comedians; the demand supply ratio is very skewed right now. There is a pool of open mic comics, some of whom will hopefully make it to live shows soon.
By Sneha Krishnan @sne_krishnan
S
tand-up comedy has been around in India for a while. Veteran film comedian’s Johnny Lever and Kader Khan made as much a living travelling through the country and abroad with their shows in the ’80s and ’90s as they did from movies. The last five-six years have gestated a more westernised version of stand-up comedy for the urban audience. Dinner, drinks and stand-up comedy have became a staple of our recreational vocabulary. We spoke to Daniel Fernandes, founder of Microphone Entertainment, which organises and produces comedy shows and events, about the movement and whether it’s here to stay. How did you become a stand-up comedian? Was it an accident or ‘I always knew it as a child…’ sort of thing? It happened completely by accident. I tried my hand at stand-up for the first time when I was studying for an MBA at the Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication in Pune in 2011. When I moved to Mumbai, I found a small comedy scene was slowly taking shape. A few open mics later, I was hooked. I was also at a personal and professional crossroads. After the Metallica concert in Bangalore in October 2011, I decided to quit my day job in an ad film production house and took up odd writing projects to pay the bills until stand-up began to pay. As a writer, what are the ground rules to be funny and original?
Comic capers There’s just one rule really: Write! Write every day. I try to keep my comedy as personal as possible so that it stands out. Even with certain premises that could be deemed common, I try to bring something different based on what I’ve observed or experienced. I’ve only just scratched the surface of the kind of material I hope to put out. A lot of hard work is needed to dig deeper beyond the obvious and create comedy that is unique. This is a long journey that takes years so I’m learning and writing as much as I can and most importantly, I’m being patient. How liberal can the content be? Are we comfortable with sex, drugs and same sex relationships? Stand-up audiences in western countries are more segmented and evolved, mainly because the art form has been there for so much longer. The industry, in terms of talent and infrastructure (comedy clubs, theatres, open mics) in the UK and America, is well established. Indian audiences lap up jokes on sex, relationships, etc, but comedians tend to tread carefully around religion or politics. Dark humour is something that has not caught on yet.
With time, we will see a shift in sensibilities. That’s when edgier material will start finding fans. What made you start your own company? I started Microphone Entertainment because there was a need to create more opportunities for stage time. We did that by setting up gigs at various pubs in Mumbai and then other cities in India. We also consult with brands and venues looking to leverage comedy. The concept of a comedy company itself varies. Some companies are focused entirely on content creation, some on the business of comedy and others on both. These companies are all led by comedians and are crucial to the Indian scene. Companies such as Weirdass Comedy, All India Bakchod, East India Comedy and others have been around for a while now, and have all made their mark across platforms. Microphone Entertainment encourages new talent. What are the touchstones of comic potential? We offer stage time to anyone with the hunger and potential. As complex as stand-up is, it is really that simple. Write jokes and just
What brings you to Pune often? Pune and I go back a long way. I have family here; I completed my MBA from SIMC, and now run a comedy property in collaboration with the awesome folks at The High Spirits Cafe. Pune is young, has a vibrant spirit and the people here love their comedy. I feel like an adopted son of sorts.
How should comedians deal with trolling, heckling and booing? On the odd occasion, one may face a heckler who yells out random stuff because (s)he wasn’t hugged enough has a child, lacks attention and does not understand the concept of someone else having an opinion. It is part and parcel of the live comedy experience and most comics are adept with handling these situations. The first instinct is to ignore the person. If (s)he continues being a nuisance, the comic will verbally take them down. The trick is to keep the audience on your side while you do this so that they enjoy watching the heckler go down with the same pleasure you do. You are bringing Kanan and Biswa to Pune on September 24. Tell us about them. Both Biswa and Kanan are popular for their YouTube channel ‘Pretentious Movie Reviews’. I think they are both highly talented with great comic timing. They have found an interesting way to connect with their fans. Eventually the audience will be segmented on the basis of whose humour they prefer more and that will happen one comedian at a time

each to the entire class. It was a great leveller because it prevented the richer girls from being lavish and shows the not-so-rich ones in poor light! I’m not a great stickler for giving or receiving presents on birthdays, anniversaries, etc. as a ‘must do’. I prefer giving a gift without occasion if I feel it’s something a friend will like.
But surely you like something? You have turned 64! What plans this year? I must confess that flowers are my weakness My play Happy Birthday Sunita opens in and I love receiving them, especially Indian London. On my birthday I will be in technical rehearsal till 10 pm. Javed has come fragrant flowers - Mogra, Rajnigandha, to be with me and I’m thrilled. I’ve embraced life at all stages. I remember people were horrified when I celebrated my 50th! ‘Don’t announce your age’, I was advised! How stupid is that. As an Indian actress, do you feel restricted by your age? This is the best time to be an actor. There are many parts available for all age groups. It’s no longer the stereotypical mother in a white sari and terrible wig sacrificing all for her family! Any unfulfilled dreams? I would have loved to play the piano! Alas! It’s too late now. IANS

Aditi Shashtri @aditiclicks In Koregaon Park was an old man surrounded by people, performing magic tricks. Akbar chacha was reluctant, almost to the point of being afraid, about talking about himself. “We are a small bunch of people who do magic tricks on the street to earn our daily bread. We perform magic, nothing wrong. We don’t cheat or con people,” he said before this photojournalist could ask anything. No matter how much she tried, he made excuses such as, “Beta zara ghum ke aao, mai yahi hu (Child, come back after a walk. I will be right here)” ; “Beta, humare liye gunha hai (Child, it’s a sin for us to talk about ourselves)”; “Hum aapko kuch nahi bata saktey (I can’t tell you anything)” and finally he became firmer, saying, “Aap kyu mere peeche padi ho? “Ab pyaar se nahi bolengay. Walk or cycle to office for better mental health
W
alking or cycling to work does not only save fuel but also leads to an improved psychological well-
being. According to a new study, people who stopped driving and started walking or cycling to work benefited from an improved well-being. In particular, active commuters felt better able to concentrate and also felt less strain than if they travelled by car. “You might think that things like disruption of services or crowds of commuters might have been a cause of considerable
stress. But as buses or trains also give people time to relax, read and socialise and there is usually an associated walk to the bus stop or railway station that appears to cheer people up,” explained lead researcher A d a m Martin from the Universit y of East
Anglia Norwich Medical School. The team studied 18 years of data on almost 18,000 commuters in age group 18-65 in Britain. The data allowed them to look at multiple aspects of psychological health including feelings of worthlessness, unhappiness, sleepless nights and being unable to face problems. “Our findings show that the longer people spend commuting in cars, the worse their psychological well-being. And correspondingly, people feel better when they have a longer walk to work,” Martin noted. The study appeared in the journal Preventive Medicine. IANS
