T

he Yellow Line Project, an initiative by Gati Dance Forum, culminated in a short fi lm titled Dudro made by fi lmmaker Dhanya Pilo and Pune-based Bharatnatyam exponent Parimal Phadke. The fi lm has been selected in the international category, to be screened at the Short Film Festival, in Mexico. The fi lm has also been screened at the National Museum of Taiwan. The five minute fi lm meanders through the chaotic landscape of a large cycle rickshaw yard in Nizamuddin East, Delhi. The winter light, contrasted through the complex

stacking of the red and blue cycle rickshaws, highlights the individual frame of these vehicles calling out to the dancer for a jugalbandi. The main focus of the dance-fi lm was to cover public spaces in Delhi. “We were asked to make a fi lm around a specific urban site in Delhi, be it a heritage site, railway line, foot bridge, dilapidated building or pavement. The content and intention of the dance and the way it was fi lmed was shaped by the history of the chosen site,” explains Parimal. With dance, camera and Delhi as the buzzwords, the fi lmmakers set

out to explore the city. They used the rickshaw yard as a performance space of a most unusual sort. Parimal being a multifaceted dancer had to visualise the rickshaw yard as a stage. “When you watch the fi lm, you will see me dance atop rickshaws as well as dancing with them in quite a lyrical way. We didn’t have to spend too much time to convince the rickshawallahs to create synchronised formations with their rickshaws that we were shooting from a 50 foot crane. They were more than happy to be part of our adventure,” says Parimal. Parimal had earlier worked on the choreography of the movie Devi Ahilya Bai, which starred Shabana Azmi. He has created new compositions to enhance the scope of a male dancer in Bharatnatyam repertoire. He is also honoured with the national title Singarmani, and was awarded the Pt Digambar Paluskar Puraskar. “I had always focused on dance, and wanted to come out with innovative themes, not just perform on mythology,” he says. zainab.kantawala @goldensparrow.com

He is in the midst of finalising the script for his latest big screen venture, Yere Yere Pavsa, while setting up a music studio in Kothrud and giving final touches to his music album, AJ And His Friends. That’s a lot of work, one might think, but Ajay is more than happy to have his hands full. Yere Yere Pavsa is the fi lmmaker’s fourth fi lm after Satrangire, Lagna Pahave Karun and Bavre Prem, which received rave reviews and good returns at the box office. Sip your way to health

From planned liquid diets to park vendors and pouches delivered at your door step, TGS Life helps you find healthy juices across the city Anjali Shetty-Shirsath @shetty_anjali

H

eard of the latest fad of cleansing through juices? Well, we’ve heard about it too. So, we decided to give it a try. We got our hands on cold-pressed juices, herbal juices and healthy juice pouches. Available in different packaging and sizes, these juices provide great health benefits.

R AW Pressery Starting with RAW Pressery, cold-pressed juices in bottles that help cleanse and detox, these juices are delivered to suit your time. They work in a balanced and organised manner, meticulously providing you a planner that guides you through the process. Other herbal juices available in the city are packaged in pouches or served in glasses at nominal rates. We tried Nutritop Foods, Hadapsar, and Herbal Juices, Aundh. Benefits of R AW Pressery juices Lean (Spirulina, Kiwi, Kale, Green Apple, Cucumber and Mint) Powered by plant protein with almost zero fat, the juice cleanses from within Trim (Kale, Spinach, Doodhi, Amla, Celery, Green Apple, Ginger, Lemon) Helps manage weight and alkalise your system Glow (Cucumber, Coconut H20, Pineapple, Lemon grass, Aloe Vera, Lemon) A great source of electrolytes, the mix will show quick results

on your skin Build (Almonds, Honey, Cinnamon, Pure H20, Sea Salt) Vitamin E helps boost brain efficiency; this blend will also help lower your cholesterol Run (Pineapple, Pear, Chia Seeds) The juice takes care of your daily requirement of Vitamin C Shield (Tangerine, Carrot, Ginger) This mix will help build immunity and beat stress Our take: Cold-pressed juices are an acquired taste. They are available in different flavours and combinations. Raw Pressery focuses on providing simple and honest ways to good health. The range of nutritious, cold-pressed juices is free of any artificial additives, water and sugar. The juices, also available in set packages like RAW Starter, RAW Resolution and RAW Commitment packages, have been developed under the professional guidance of medical and culinary experts. It was launched by Anuj Rakyan, last year, and a one-day cleanse costs `1,500. The juices by RAW Pressery are packaged and combined according to the time of the day. For example the 4.30 pm Tangerine , Carrot And Ginger drink pumps you up. It helps you revive your energy lost during the day. Similarly, the other five drinks serve their purpose. Definitely a better choice if you are looking at a serious, well-balanced detox. Nutro Top Foods, Hadapsar With the world going the organic way, we still have a lacuna in the market for the middle class. Smita Dhumal decided to fill this gap. She introduced Nutro Top Foods. Here, she packages juices in 100 ml pouches and delivers them to your doorstep at 7.30 am for `15. Benefits of Nutro Top Foods’ juices Carrot: Eye problem, skin spotting, bones and tooth, kidney, asthma Beet root: Anemia, eyes and skin Ginger-Lime: Constipation, gastric trouble, acidity and arthritis Bitter Gourd: Diabetes, blood

purification, weight reduction, constipation Wheatgrass: Rich in Vit-C, B. Contains anti cancer agent Laetrile. Helpful in cancer, acidity, anaemia, skin deisease, bronchial asthama, chronic cold, allergic disorders, arthritis, keeps away hair greying, has anti aging property, excellent skin cleanser Bottlegourd: Promotes virility, effective on heart diseases, disorders. The juice consumption strengthens cardiac muscles which helps heart function more effectively Papaya: An excellent source of Vitamin C and Potassium. Papayas contain papain, an enzyme that is similar to the digestive enzyme, pepsin Herbal Juice, stall outside Crossword Bookstore, Aundh The third juice vendor operates off a table at Aundh, opposite Crossword bookstore. Priti Jadhav has had a stall here for the last 18 years. She also boasts of a certificate that talks about her expertise in making these juices. Priti’s mother and she start their day at 2.30 am and prepare juices until 5 am. Priti then sets out to sell the juices in a glass, priced at `25. If you want the juice delivered, you will have to shell out an extra `5. Benefits of juices at Herbal Juice stall at Aundh Neem: Reduces heat, increases blood circulation and purifies blood Carrot: Improves skin, eyes and effective in preventing cancer Bottle Gourd: Helps in weight loss and used in heart ailments Wheatgrass: Helps diabetic patients, maintains blood pressure and aides weight loss Our take: The juices by Nutritop and Herbal Juices tasted more or less the same but they were fresh and refreshing. The vegetable juices actually gave one a feeling like one was gulping down the product. The carrot and beetroot juices were exceptional. anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

How do the drinks help detox? Anuj shares, “This varies from individual to individual. The juices provide you with an instant dose of healthy nutrition and the benefits can be felt immediately by many. For those undergoing a cleanse, it may take a few hours or days. Some of the benefits of our juice cleanses include a regulated, nourished colon, increased energy and stamina, improved mental clarity, better sleep patterns and a radiant complexion.” What is the difference between cold-pressed juice and other juices? Unlike household juicers or blenders, the cold-press technology produces no heat and allows no air to enter during the juice extraction process. The heat and air thrust through the juice when made in a normal blender or juicer destroys living enzymes and micro-nutrients. However, during the cold-pressing process, a lot of pressure is exerted on the raw produce to yield a fine consistent juice. The juice contains no preservatives, no chemicals and no added sugar, not even water. How much should you have? A pouch a day is good enough. In case you are a fitness freak and already have a check on your diet then you can have two variants within a span of 15 minutes. When to have? Maximum benefits are seen when consumed on empty stomach. The juices should be consumed before 8 am or stored for 12 hours at 4 degrees.

What’s cooking for IPL?

Executive chef Girish Kumar shares IPL season 8 player’s specials only with TGS readers By Anjali Shetty-Shirsath @shetty_anjali

W

hat keeps up the stamina and strength of your favourite cricket player on and off field? A well-balanced diet and healthy meals, experts tell us. The eighth season of IPL is on and Kings XI Punjab are at the Maharashtra Cricket Association, Gahunje, since it’s their home ground. The team is currently staying at Courtyard

by Marriott Pune, Chakan. Executive chef, Girish Kumar has designed a special menu for the players and visiting teams, keeping in mind their diet. Girish shares some exciting information with us, “From a special room service menu that we have designed only for the cricketers during their stay with us, we have noticed that the most ordered dish is the good old Tandoori Chicken and we serve it with a Raw Mango Kachumbar Salad. The Jerky-style Netherland Pork Chops are also a big hit with the players and we serve it with corn, black beans and avocado.” Quite a few of the Kings XI Punjab cricketers have also found a favourite in the Sticky Soy-Glazed Meatball Skewers with Asian Vegetable Noodle Salad. The Spiced Austra-

lian Lamb Cutlets with Carrot and Chickpea Salad is also a big hit with the team. Before the teams arrived, the brief given to the kitchen was that dishes served to the players have to be extremely healthy. So, the menu has dishes that are high on fibre and protein, are cooked in less fat, and are also not very spicy. The cricketers must also have fruits in their diet. But the sportsmen also make special requests before the chef and are easily obliged. “Virender Sehwag loves having Chicken Kebabs and has requested our chefs to prepare the dish for him. We have prepared Roast Chicken for the Kings XI Punjab captain George Bailey and a special Sprouts Salad for Rahul Dravid,” points out Girish. anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

As the city opens its doors to different world cuisines, most of the ingredients and spices used in Thai cuisine are available in the local markets. Thai dishes are usually spicy but they can be tempered down according to your taste. Fresh ingredients like garlic, red chillies, lemon grass, galangal, basil leaves, kaffir lime leaf, bamboo shoots, and coconuts are used in almost all the dishes. 42-year-old Chef Pensiri Pattanachaeng, from J W Marriott, says, “Before trying to cook Thai dishes, it is important to underMethod Cut all the vegetables into small pieces. THRILL OF DRIVING

A-Class apart PHOTOGRAPHy: Vikrant Date

The smallest Merc gets a much-needed boost. Abhay Verma drives it

I

’ve always liked the Mercedes-Benz A-Class; it looks cool and sporty but the diesel version was far from exciting with just 107bhp from its 2.1-litre engine. Mercedes has been listening to our cries and this issue has now been addressed. The motor is now in the same state of tune as the GLAClass SUV, producing a far healthier 134bhp along with 300Nm of torque, which is still not as much as the BMW 118d’s 141bhp and 320Nm. The car also gets a new badge - A 200 CDI (the earlier car was badged A 180 CDI), while the additional 27bhp makes it feel more sprightly. Performance tests confirmed the same, as the updated A-Class diesel hit the ton in 9.53 seconds from standstill on our VBOX, which is more than a second quicker than the previous version. The car feels quicker throughout the rev range, and the engine pulls cleanly from very low revs with barely any turbo lag. The

engine feels as smooth as ever, and has no trouble pulling all the way to its 4800rpm red line. Top speed is over 200kmph, though, expectedly, the A-Class does seem to run out of breath after 200kmph. It feels nicer to drive in the city as well thanks to the improved performance, as mid-range is beefier now. This sporty hatch is best enjoyed in Sport mode, but the 7-speed dual clutch automatic feels slightly slower to respond than expected to manual inputs via the steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. Ride quality remains firm, and if you drive fast over potholes, thuds are felt inside the cabin. The stiffer set-up, though, helps in keeping the A-Class planted around fast corners. With the extra horses, the car feels more spirited to drive, adding to its credentials as a sporty hatchback. The steering feels well weighted for spirited driving but might feel

too heavy at parking speeds. Since this is not a facelift, the car has not changed visually, except for the panoramic sunroof from the Edition 1, which was a limited edition variant of the A-Class. Not that the A-Class needs a facelift yet, as it still looks extremely appealing, especially from the front, thanks to its unique grille. It does get new 16-inch alloys, which add to its sporty stance. The 2015 model retails at `26.95 lakh exshowroom, Mumbai which is a lakh rupees more than the outgoing A 180 CDI. But the extra horses under the hood certainly are worth the extra money, since the car now feels more like it ought to from behind the wheel. abhay@evo.in

ased on the well-regarded Gixxer, the Gixxer SF is the most affordable fully-faired motorcycle out there, and promises a lot in terms of dynamics and quality. Suzuki hasn’t gone the full hog by changing everything they could. Instead, they’ve simply slapped on a well-designed fairing, tested in the same wind tunnel as the GSX-Rs and Hayabusas, which speaks a lot for its efficiency in aiding straight line speeds and stability. Under the skin, the Gixxer SF is identical to the Gixxer, meaning you get the same tried and tested, air-cooled and carbureted motor. Suzuki didn’t deem it necessary to opt for fuel injection as they were able to achieve the same results with a carburetor, and injection would only add to costs. Cycle parts remain the same, and the bike is shod with the same tried and tested MRF tyres that left us super impressed with their grip levels on the Gixxer.

Let your pet keep it

cool this summer

By Barnalee Handique @barnalee

e pamper our four-legged companions as much as we pamper ourselves. They are an extension of our own personalities, after all. So, whether it’s to do with ensuring they stay healthy through every season, or that the pets look as ravishing as you do, it requires a lot of effort. When the sun beats down mercilessly, pets suffer as much as we do and need extra care and grooming. Eating light to stay healthy are the keywords for yourself and your pet until clouds take over the skies. According to Wanowriebased dog behaviourist, Huzannah Banajee Jose, pets should be given water, milk and curds to keep their digestive system cool. Jose also advises that even though you pet maybe fond of meat, it should be avoided as a regular meal. On the other hand, vitamins and minerals should be incorporated in their daily diet.

“Often, due to excessive heat, dogs and cats lose their appetite. They tend to use more body energy in trying to keep cool. This is why it is advisable to feed them a nutritionally balanced diet early in the morning, or late at night. They should also be given plenty of water to drink,” explains Jose. Water is absolutely essential, swears Manvi Pittie, who has been running Wag and Wash, Koregaon Park, for nearly three years. “Drinking water helps the pets stay cool and hydrated.

This is a holistic, skin and coat care centre, which includes an eco-friendly spa and a veterinary clinic. Clients usually drop in when their pet needs a shampoo, brushing and a haircut and land up picking something from the accessories section. “Pet owners scan the market so that can buy the latest stuff to make their pet’s world more colourful. Our store has a selection of furniture, tee shirts and matching shoes for the dogs, matching bowls and

containers. Customers also want to get personalised collars, tags, personal carriers, and so on,” shares Lochana Baney, owner of the store. Baney was once asked to make a dog look like a lion, while another pet owner wanted the fur painted a vibrant colour. But she discourages such requests, “If one loves their pets, they should never make such suggestions as it spoils the fur and damages the skin.” A pet haircut cost from ` 800 onwards at Gordon Just FUR Dogs.

Most pets like to take a dip in pools and fountains. However, they should not be allowed to wallow in water for a long time, as they might catch a cold. They should be taken for their walks early in the morning or late in the evening, not during the day.” In fact, make sure not to take your pet out for a walk in the afternoon as the skin tends get scorched. The concrete and the tar on roads may also cause infection on the pets’ paws. In the summer months, grooming plays an even more important role. All dogs have a natural tendency to shed hair and grow and new coat at regular intervals; this is the cyclic coat change. When an animal is moved from its natural habitat, into its owners’ home, most need help with their coat change. The best way to fight the heat is to give your pets a haircut. “Climate plays an important role in the development of the coat in dogs and grooming is required for any dog. During the summer season, dogs tend to shed a lot of fur. The only way to keep it in check is to brush the pet regularly so that all the unwanted hair from the body comes off. Brushing helps the skin breathe. It removes the grime, ticks, and fleas as well as helps better the blood circulation,” says Lochna Baney, owner, Gordon Just FUR Dogs. Another option is to get the cut the fur short. It is a must for breeds such as Golden Retrievers, Siberian Huskies and Saint Bernards, which have long and double-coated fur. At the same time, animal groomer Rupal Zinngdhe is careful to point out that a haircut should not involve shaving off the hair as that could damage your pet’s skin, due to exposure to direct sunlight. Besides trimming fur, it is essential to give your pet a bath at regular intervals. Girish Gupte, a pet owner, likes to give his Alsatian a bath every 15 days. He believes that it helps the dog keep cool and clean. On the other hand, Joanne

Vaghari prefers to take her Lhasa Apso to the spa. She says, “At the spa, the attendant also checks my pet’s teeth and nails apart from giving her a massage before the bath. I think she really loves it and looks forward to these outings.” Unlike dogs, cats can combat the heat rather comfortably. They prefer lounging in shady areas. However, water should be provided to the cats at regular intervals or they may suffer indigestion and develop rectal infections. Dogs are more prone to heat strokes. If your pet is panting, salivating or foaming through his mouth, ensure he drinks

plenty of water. If she doesn’t respond to your administrations, contact your vet immediately. While caring for your pet is important, it doesn’t mean that all the fun flies out the window in the summer. A number of pet salons across the city offer specialised services to comfort your pet, especially in this heat. Although an appointment at a pet salon is capable of burning a tiny hole in your pocket, it’s fun watching your pet enjoy all the accessories and pet care products. Helping the animals look their stunning best are a string of pet salons that offer a range of services in the city:

Wag and Wash Koregaon Park Pawsh Baner

According to pet groomer Rupal Zingade, the latest cuts in demand are lion, puppy, doddle or cocker cut. “There are a variety of shampoos for pets. One may select the medicated shampoo or go for the oat meal scrub shampoo, which is usually used for dogs with dry skin. For dogs, who sport a black, or brown, coat of fur, owners usually go for specific shampoos which add

an extra shine to their coat,” says Rupal. Pets can also be treated to aroma massages and baths that help them relax their muscles. She also cleans their ears and clips their nails. Besides dogs, services are available for cats too. The feline pets are usually brought in for a bath, to get their whiskers trimmed and their nails clipped. The price of the services starts from `1400 onwards.

This high-end salon, set up by Manvi Pittie, is known for its many styling and grooming services. Manvi believes in safe grooming without getting the dogs stressed. She specialises in fancy haircuts for Maltese, Yorkshire, Toy Poodles and Terriers. Diya Moolani ,who has been taking her dogs to the salon for a while now, says, “I have two dogs and they are usually excited about going to the salon. They are well taken care of when they are there. Usually, Manvi suggests what shampoos are to be used after a consultation.” The cost of a treatment varies according to what it involves. If a flea and tick treatment

shampoo is used, then the price starts from Rs 1,000 and may go up according to how big the dog is. Wag and Wash is the only salon in the city that does hair colouring for pets. According to Manvi, owners tend to follow the latest trends in pet fashion very closely and there has been a huge demand for hair colour lately. They usually ask to get the ears, tails and the pony tails coloured. To keep it safe, Manvi uses colours that do not burn or bleach the animal’s fur. The entire routine is rather expensive - just to get a tail coloured, it may cost between ` 3,000 to `3,500.

Head-strong and focused is how one would describe Nikita Naiknavare, who runs the show at Lost the Plot Rahul Raut

By Anjali Shetty-Shirsath @shetty_anjali

W

ith the weather is turning schizophrenic, Nikita Naiknavare, founder of the open-air film screening space Lost The Plot (LTP), has her plate full. She meets us on the seventh floor of Seasons Apartment Hotel, Aundh, where LTP’s activities take place. Nikita is peering through her black-rimmed spectacles at the roof of the venue. The weather has been mean and the gusty wind has ripped off the roof that she had specially got made for the site. Despite the scene, the 25-yearold remains calm and composed, while explaining to the staff how Theatre to salvage the situation before turning to greeting us. with a twist The sky and above Nikita founded LTP nearly a yearand-a-half ago, calling the project a rooftop cinema and pub. LTP has recently tied up with the Koregaon Park-based art centre, Monalisa Kalagram, to launch Twilight Talkies, a premium picnic-in-the-park style outdoor concept. As the name suggests, at Twilight Talkies, you can watch your favourite films on a big screen set up under the stars. “Just as Lost The Plot is not a traditional film club, Twilight Talkies also offers a different experience altogether. I happened to visit Monalisa Kalagram and was amazed to see that there is such a quiet and serene place right here in Koregaon Park,” says Nikita, who studied law

in UK, before returning to Pune. Creating special memories By now, the film enthusiast is used to answering queries on her choice of location. People often ask Nikita about her decision to set up a film screening on a terrace, or garden. She chuckles, “Ya, so many people have come up and asked me the same question. Today, people have home theatres and can catch a film in the comfort of

their homes but watching a classic on the big screen is a different experience altogether.” In fact, the conversation reminds Nikita of a screening of My Fair Lady, where a family had come along with the grandparents. “It was such a sweet moment when the grandma came up to me and said, ‘Thank you so much for screening this movie.’ The last time she’s seen the movie was in Mumbai’s Eros Theatre when it was first released and she was just a girl. She still remembered

the lyrics of all the songs and really wanted her grandkids to watch the film too. These anecdotes light up my day and I feel good about what I’m doing,” she adds. It hasn’t all been hunky dory though. Nikita shares how the process of setting-up the procedure to procure films has been tedious. India still does not have an actual framework when it comes to the supply chain for films. “It is hard to get rights for the films. Now that we are in touch with a distributor things are easier and we have a bank of films,” she adds. The next move Divulging details on her vision for the future, Nikita adds, “I intend to provide a platform for indie filmmakers. The set-up will help extend the life of their movies too. shelf Non-theatrical spaces have just begun to come to India, although in an isolated manner. It is not like indie music where you could instantly find takers. Indie films need to get into public domain.” Nikita wants to organise more workshops, short film festivals and language film festivals at LTP. “There are many indie films and other not-so-popular films, which get very short theatrical runs. They are targeted at the urban youth and working population. Unfortunately, theatre time slots don’t fit in and that is why LTP wants to create a platform for such films. In addition, people associated with the film also get an opportunity to attend the screening and discuss their vision with the audience.” anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

Congress supporter and entrepreneur Tehseen Poonawalla shares his views on being in love and why he says what he wants to By Anjali Shetty-Shirsath @shetty_anjali

T

he much-in-love-couple can’t stop gushing over each other. After every answer they look at each other for approval. Entrepreneur and Congress supporter Tehseen Poonawalla brought his lady love Monicka Vadera to Pune to celebrate a year of togetherness and give her a tour of his city. TGS met with the young couple at an up-market restaurant. The couple entered an hour late but quickly seated themselves at a table away from the noise and crowd. LOVE BIRDS Dressed in a green and black number, Monicka is poised and greets us warmly. She is excited about her visit to Pune after five years. “He is a very different person. Tehseen stood out since the first day I met him. He speaks his mind and is genuine at whatever he does,” says Monicka, who met the entrepreneur for the first time on March 6, last year, through a common friend in Delhi. Within five months of dating, the couple decided to take things further. “Ours is a semi-arranged marriage. After newspaper articles started appearing about us, our families prodded us. They asked us whether we are happy with each other. There was no realisation or epiphany. We were meant to be,” smiles Tehseen.

BLOOD TIES How does Tehseen react to claims of supporting his brother-in-law or rumours that he is in the limelight because he is dating Vadra’s sister? “It doesn’t really matter. I started off my political career with Congress way before I met Monicka. So there is no connection whatsoever. People can think whatever they wish. My stand is irrespective of who I marry. Tomorrow, if Congress is wrong, I will go against the party too. My thoughts are not influenced,” says Tehseen who has been actively involved in promoting gay rights and has been working hard to make gay marriages legal in India. “I think the government has no right to decide for us. You cannot term the LGBT community as unnatural. In the larger sense, marriage is unnatural because animals don’t marry to reproduce. Also, when I support a cause it is because I have seen it closely around me.” PUNE CALLING

MIXING WORK WITH PLEASURE The couple, as a rule, doesn’t attend calls or check phones when they are together. They

spend three nights a week going out to dinners or a drive. They also make it a point to work out in the gym together, thrice a week. “I have realised you don’t need big things to be happy or content. We find happiness by just sending each other text messages. There is no grand gesture. It could be something as small as going out for coffee together,” adds Tehseen. They share that they usually discuss anything under the sun. Their basic principles are the same and that makes it easy for them to agree to disagree on various issues.

Monicka hopes to start a retail outlet for her jewellery designs in the city soon. “Initially, I thought Pune is conservative when it comes to jewellery but I was wrong. The crowd here is

ready to experiment.” The couple is planning a December wedding but do not have much to reveal about it as yet. anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

Love in the time of satyagraha

Author Laxmi Dhaul traces the love story of Ayi Tendulkar and Indumati Gunaji, who were involved with the Indian independence movement

By Barnalee Handique @barnalee

I

f you have always been interested in history and want to know more about colonial India, be sure to pick up Laxmi Dhaul’s Ayi Tendulkar – Two Nations, Three Lives, that was recently launched in the city. The novel is Marathi version of her tome in English, In The Shadow Of Freedom. The novel speaks about the essence of romance in the corridors of history. The true story is based on the life of the author’s father Ayi Ganpat Tendulkar, Thea von Harbou and her mother Indumati Gunaji. Laxmi reveals, “I wanted to share the story of my parents with people. For a very long time, I have been contemplating about putting my parent’s love story into words. Their love brewed during India’s struggle for freedom. The story needed a lot of experience and maturity to deal with it. The incidents

had to be linked together and the story needed a lot of research and travel. I need to meet people who could throw a light on my father’s life. I had the letters by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Gandhiji, who had written to my father. The personal records maintained by my mother helped me write this novel.” Laxmi contacted various people via the internet, apart from visiting Berlin where she met people and found clippings of her father’s articles in a library. While writing the novel, the author was indecisive about writing the story from the point of view of her parents, that is, the story being narrated by her parents, or whether she should write it from her own perspective. Eventually, on the publisher’s request, Laxmi presented her work in the third person. Tendulkar was a part of India’s struggle for freedom. He had participated in Gandhiji’s satyagraha movement while he was working with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as a secretary. He was awarded a national scholarship and soon left for France to pursue an education at Ecole Normale Superiure in Paris. After completing his studies, Tendulkar decided to pursue his doctoral thesis from Humboldt University in Berlin. While there, he took up journalism as his profession. By that time, a flamboyant Tendulka could speak six different languages, including Sanskrit. He

had written articles for national as well as international newspapers about India and various issues of the time. As the story spins off, the author tries to conjoin contemporary history with the dilemmas of contrast that romance has to play in the backdrop of nationalism. Tendulkar returned to the country in 1934 to start a newspaper at Belgaum, Karnataka. That’s where he met Indumati Gunaji. Meanwhile Tendulkar had already married thrice abroad. Harbou was his third wife. Gunaji’s parents were against the match and her father asked Gandhiji to intervene. Later on, Gandhiji himself solemnised their marriage, but he asked them to lead a life of celibacy until India achieved independance. Various sections of the novel bring forth a picture of how ordinary people made sacrifices and the challenges, which impacted their life. “The different incidents interwoven in the story were an eye-opener for me. Ordinary people were bound by the diktats of the political leaders. The leaders were not even sure whether they would gain freedom and what would happen to the country after the Britisher’s left,” said Laxmi. This is the author’s second novel after her coffee table book on Sufi saints of Ajmer. Currently, she is busy writing scripts for 2D and 3D media works.
