Directors should make more films that showcase Indian heritage: Ghai

“Fourth time around, it’s extraordinary, we’re besotted. There’s a lot of children out there who don’t have the good fortune that our biological children do, so it’s wonderful. It’s wonderful to welcome a little girl into our fold.”

Entertainment

“Several Oscar-winning films based on Indiarelated subjects were not made by directors from our country. Through Gandhi the foreign audience saw India, but sadly that was not made by an Indian director. It was made by Richard Attenborough.”

Grab a sneak peek at Hola Venky After spending a year hosting screenings around the world, director Sandeep Mohan makes his way to the city, this weekend, to showcase his second film at NFAI, before an online release on April 2 By Sneha Krishnan @Sne_krishnan

ost assistant directors working in Mumbai’s bustling film industry make their way to the top of the hierarchy as directors after slugging it out with the who’s who of the industry on big budget films. Writer/director Sandeep Mohan rose up the ladder in much the same way. “I was always interested in the making of a film and working as an assistant director was my window to mainstream Hindi cinema,” said Sandeep. The filmmaker has two movies in his repertoire, the first Love, Wrinkle-free (2011), while the latest is Hola Venky. The director was in Aundh last week to screen his debut movie Love, Wrinkle-free, an ensemble comedy set in sunny Goa. This weekend, on an invitation from the National Film Archive of India (NFAI), Sandeep returns to the city with his second venture, Hola Venky. The film is an experimental comedy shot in Mumbai and San Francisco, USA. The stoxxxxx ry revolves around a techie who moves to San Francisco and learns to live in a modern society amidst a different culture. Scarred by the expe-

rience of seeking a censor certificate for Love, Wrinkle-free, Sandeep decided to move away from a commercial release for Hola Venky. In a rather brave move, he chose to make the film with a three-member crew and a budget of Rs 10 lakh. “The main challenge of making the movie was to ensure that it doesn’t look like a low-budget film from any angle,” he said. Hola Venky had a theatrical release in the United States and Singapore last year, with over 85 screenings. Sandeep prefers to have a one-onone interaction with his audience. So, rather than sell tickets to the screening, he has come up with an interesting idea, “I call this The Great Indian Traveling Cinema. After the screening, I distribute envelopes to the audience and ask them to pen down their comments. Those, who like the film, might also put in some money in the envelope.” To Sandeep, understanding what the Pune audience thinks about his works is an important aspect. Asked why he would travel to Pune to screen his films week after week, he said, “I have always felt that the audience in Pune has been very receptive to my kind of films. This could be because the city has a nice mix of corporate professionals and students, who love to go out and have a good time. Also, largely, the audience for my kind of films is urban and Pune is a growing urban base.” Elaborating further, the director pointed out, “When it comes to theatre and cinema, Pune has some of the best technicians, who move to the film industry in Mumbai eventually. FTII certainly has a great vibe. I really believe the film industry should have been in Pune instead of Mumbai. Pune would be a much cooler place to live in and make movies from.” The director will screen Hola Venky this Sunday at the NFAI and will release the film on the internet, on April 2 sneha.krishnan@goldensparrow.com

ollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan was disheartened after a teenager complained that he didn’t greet her on her birthday, saying the actor’s claims of being in touch with fans was false. The 72-year-old makes it a point to wish his fans. “Amita has been upset that I did not wish her on the 15th... my apologies... She has (said) on Twitter that I ... am false in my expressions of greeting. “Well...what can I say… no one that I follow shall ever be deleted from my list...if others wish to leave, I am no one to stop them... “I never forced anyone to come on board, I shall never force anyone to leave... this platform is most sacred to me, and shall ever remain so,” he posted on his official blog. The versatile actor also mentioned that his dedication to the social media would continue. The superstar is busy working these days on Piku and Wazir releasing this year. — IANS

TV lacks content due to daily soap concept: Kantaben Says TV shows are made as per viewers’ choice, and that’s why concepts end up being stereotyped sometimes

B

ollywood’s ‘Kanta Ben’ Sulbha Arya, who has over three decades’ experience in showbiz, says Hindi soap operas are deteriorating in quality because scripts are penned in fast mode on a day-to-day basis. Additionally, it’s because of viewers that concepts become stereotypical in telly land, she says. Sulbha, who has appeared in TV shows like Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, Piya Ka Ghar and Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki, says daily soaps have made a writers’ job difficult because of hectic shooting schedules. “When I started, we used to have weekly shows. But now we have daily soaps and both of them are totally different. “A writer’s job has become difficult now because they have to write dialogues for so many

characters on a daily basis. They have less time to think about scripts,” she told IANS. However, this daily demand has had a positive impact on the industry too, noted Sulbha. “The demand for manpower has increased in the industry. We can’t blame shows for lacking a subject because scripts are written in a fast way now.” “Viewers’ appreciation makes TV shows stereotyped. If a show or its characters get more popularity, producers try to make similar kind of shows because of the demand of viewers,” said the actress, best remembered for her role in 2003 romantic comedy-drama film Kal Ho Naa Ho. The actress is currently portraying ‘Badi Dadi’ - head of Thakur family - who is highly opinionated

and gives everyone a run for their money with her cutting remarks in &TV’s show Begusarai. Talking about her character, she said: “She is strict and keeps on taunting everyone. She is a strong woman, who looks after each and every person of the family. It’s a character that I have never done in the past. For the first time in my life, people are seeing me with a gun in my hand. This one is really different.” Begusarai is based on the “lifestyle of Begusarai (Uttar Pradesh)” and delivers the “real atmosphere” of the place. It revolves around Thakur family -- how they become head of the village and people get scared of them. It also has “love angle” and “property issues” in the storyline. — IANS

Clowning around is not easy Rahul Raut

Arwa Janjali, Prapti Oswal and Aniket Kale in a practice session at Empress Botanical garden

Theatre director, producer and actor, Arwa Janjali, speaks to TGS about what interests her about the stage and her performances in the city so far By Barnalee Handique @barnalee

W

e caught up with Arwa Janjali when she was staging Noses Are Red at a restaurant in Kalyani Nagar. Dressed like a clown, sporting a red nose, it was difficult to recognise her. Two other actors, Prapti Oswal and Aniket Kale, kept company with Arwa. In no time, the three clowns had the restaurant’s patrons in splits. As the evening progressed the audience got involved with the act but, it was the children’s interactions with the clowns which stole the show. Clowning itself is a genre. It is a monologue accompanied by

improvised comedy. It is an interactive session that does not necessarily require a script. After the performance, Arwa noted, “Clowning has not been explored to that extent in our country. Perhaps the audience was able to relate to it as they had observed clowning acts in circus. Clowning is much more than that, however. We organised the show to break the popular myth.” Before performing Noses Are Red in front of an audience, Arwa and her co-actors rehearsed for a couple of hours, every day, to build their spontaneity. Spontaneity was a key factor for the group and they hoped to be able to improvise on the spot, based on audience reaction. The venue also is a deciding factor in these kinds of performances,

Arwa points out, adding, “We didn’t want any demarcation between the audience and us. We wanted them to be one with us.” The young theatre artiste was drawn towards the medium when she was working as a journalist. Interviewing theatre and film artistes was her forte. Inspired, Arwa decided to pursue a course in acting and signed up for a course at University of Auckland, New Zealand. The course enlightened her about the different nuances of theatre and acting. She states that she became aware of the minute details that need attention while scripting and performing plays. Armed with a degree, the 27-year-old returned to the city bent on creating a niche for herself within the bustling theatre fraternity. Over time, the young theatrewala has staged a number of plays in the city. She played a part worth remembering in the play Bits And Pieces and followed it up with five other plays. Another performance that has remained with theatre audiences is Arwa’s monologue in the play Someone Like Me. The play dealt with one’s appearance, which plays a critical part in today’s world. When not on stage, Arwa teaches drama at Expressions Unlimited, an academy affiliated with London Academy of Music and Dramatics Art (LAMDA). She also organises theatre workshops in schools and colleges. Presently, she is working on taking clowning to the next level and is planning to put up theatre productions in association with schools. barnalee.handique@goldensparrow.com

Of street theatre and Indian politics TGS catches up with Delhi-based theatre person Sudhanva Deshpande, who is one of the key speakers at Lalit Kala Kendra’s Understanding Theatre series this week

By Aditi Sharma

A

t the end of a long, tiresome day, Sudhanva Deshpande, managing editor LeftWord Books and actor, director and key member of Jana Natya Manch (Janam), Delhi, makes time to talk about Pune, the future of political theatre in India and Janam’s new street play, Natak Chhappan Chhati. After his parents, playwright and academician GP Deshpande and women’s rights activist Kalindi Deshpande passed away, Sudhanva’s visits to Pune have reduced drastically, he admits. But he makes it a point to travel to the city at least twice a year to look after the house he grew up in. So, when Lalit Kala Kendra extended an invitation to take part in a lecture series, Sudhanva was only glad to come back to the city where he spent his childhood. Next week, Sudhanva will discuss a rather loaded subject he has been closely associated with for years, Theatre of Commitment. Nevertheless, being a part of the street theatre group Janam, he is very well aware what the subject entails. He points out that his kind of theatre is politically committed, “There is also, of course, a commitment to art. But I’m not very

competent to speak about that,” he smiles. On a more serious note, Sudhanva says, “Street theatre, as it is performed today, may not be the same as what would be performed in the 1970s but it represents a new sensibility of younger participants. There’s a unique exploration of newer subjects that is very interesting.” Sudhanva believes that even though theatre may not be very visible on the streets anymore, a form of it is growing by the day in college and university campuses. It is a reflection on the changing times, he says. “Every period and time has its own way of articulating its relation with theatre. There are different ways that people are pursuing street theatre now and I find that exciting. There is a hell of a lot happening in colleges and I’m very impressed that youngsters are portraying their own ideas. Many youngsters are trying to persuade their professors to let

them pursue street theatre,” Sudhanva remarks. Moving on, Janam latest production has also kept him busy the last few weeks. The politically-charged performance, Natak Chhappan Chhati Ka, was recently performed in Delhi. Sudhanva keenly discusses the plotline of the play, “It is inspired by a certain Delhi gentleman’s alleged 56-inch chest. The play is about the times we live in, the aggressive stance by the Hindutva elements, the tacit encouragement by the government, and a new terminology - Swachcha Bharat, Make In India, First Develop India, etc. - that has taken hold. On the other hand, there is a huge sellout to the corporate lobby. Meanwhile, prices continue to rise and the poor are still dying,” he explains. Sudhanva points out that audiences find a connect with Natak Chhappan Chhati Ka because when they look at the number of restrictions that have cropped up recently, people feel disturbed. “Look at the ban on the documentary and the many other bans that have been put in place lately,” he remarks. Taking a moment to articulate his thoughts, the theatrewala concludes, “Remember the eight years that George Bush was the president of the United States? It turned into a very good time for humorists. When PM Modi won the general elections, I thought, ‘Wow! He is so much more interesting than the earlier PM and such a great figure to lampoon.” Understanding Theatre Part 2 will be held between March 23 and 26, 5.30 pm to 8.30 pm daily, at Jyotsna Bhole Sabhagruh, Tilak Road, Pune. Entry to the lectures is free, on first come first serve basis. For details contact Lalit Kala Kendra on 020-25601162

indulge If the Yankees made spaghetti and meatballs their own, could Puneites be far behind? City chefs tell us how Italian dishes are taking on a local touch

early a decade ago, the Chinese Szechuan sauce reached the roadside food stall as Schezwan sauce. Udipi restaurants weren’t going to get left behind, so they introduced the Spring Dosa. Of course, around the same time the local dhaba concocted the Chicken Lollipop. Ask a Chinese gourmet about any of these dishes and s/he will stare back at you, blankly. Now that the Chinese cuisine has more or less been completely Indianised, we turn our gaze towards Italy. Pizzas have been boasting of Chicken Tikka toppings for a while now, but have you tried including Kasuri Methi in your pasta yet? Pune’s chefs have and they claim patrons are lapping up the fusion dishes. Zesty Creamy Lemon Pasta Ingredients 1 cup cream 1 tsp Oregano Chilly flakes (as per taste) Salt (as per taste) 2 tsp Olive Oil 1 tsp butter 1 tsp black pepper 2-3 Garlic pods A pinch of cinnamon powder A pinch of Kasuri Methi 1/4th cup mushrooms

that something was, perhaps, missing in her dishes. “I started adding touches of Indian spices, like chili flakes, cumin powder and mint, to the recipe,. I haven’t had to worry about leftovers ever since,” she smiles. Slowly, and steadily, chefs across Italian restaurants in the city are hitting the same realisation as Ekta. So, cumin and coriander seeds, turmeric, hot chilli, ginger, garlic and soy are nudging their way into the spice shelves of cooks dealing with Italian cuisine. “The trend is picking up pace in the city and I get a lot of customers asking for spicier, hotter sauces and toppings in their pastas and pizzas,” says Chef Anurudh Khanna, executive chef at The Westin Pune. “The best part about this kind of a fusion is that you get to experiment with ingredients as the Indian spice list is vast. When customers request for exotic vegetables in spiced sauces, we add some garlic, fresh tomatoes and a mix of spices that includes cloves, cinnamon and peppercorns,” Khanna adds. Most Italian food lovers in the city prefer to overload their pizzas and pastas with cheese and this cuts down on the intake of veggies considerably. A fresh tomato sauce with the right amount of spices and garlic is all you need to get started with Italian food. But, most city chefs believe that a dash of curry powder and smoked paprika can freshen up a patron’s taste buds. “I often have customers asking for slightly more spice in their meal, so I add some flavour with cayenne pepper, dry red chilli or local jalapeños,” says Wanowrie-based gourmet chef Sajjani Nair, adding, “Some of the recipes that my customers ask me to tweak are the Stroganoff and the Chicken Wings. I add more spices, as per their request. I prefer cooking authentic dishes and dig up old recipes. I generally don’t mix and match or try out fusion recipes.” sneha.krishnan@goldensparrow.com

estled in the heart of Punjab is Amritsar, known for the Golden Temple and the Jallianwala Bagh. The town is also known for its delectable cuisine, which though similar to Punjabi cuisine, is richer in flavour and spices, with ingredients like gur used to add a unique flavour. Amritsari preparations are generally cooked on a low flame in the interest of preserving the taste and colour of the ingredients. Naina Bhasin, marketing professional and our guide to Amritsari food, says, “The cuisine has been greatly influenced by the farming community, and it makes use of vegetables and dairy products that are available in Punjab. Cow and buffalo milk is plentiful and thick, creamy lassi and assorted dairy products are common in every Punjabi household.” The foodie shares some of her favourite recipes with TGS readers: Sarson da saag Ingredients 500 grams mustard (sarson) leaves 250 grams tomatoes 2 to 3 green chillies 1 small piece of ginger 2 tbsp oil 1 to 2 pinches of hing (asafoetida) 1/4 tsp Jeera (cumin seeds) 1/4 tsp turmeric powder 1 tbsp corn flour or gram flour 1/4 tsp red chilli powder Salt, add as per taste 1 tbsp butter or ghee

Sarson da saag

Method Cut Sarson into big pieces and put them in a cooker along with a bowl of water until one whistle. In the meanwhile, make a fine paste of tomatoes, green chillies and ginger. performance gains though. Hyundais are not exactly perceived as fun to drive but the Active does a lot to change that. With the revised suspension it felt more sure footed than the Elite i20, while the additional ground clearance gave me the confidence to drive over rough patches. The engine pulls cleanly from upwards of 2000rpm which makes it more fun at lower revs as well, helping you take off quickly from standstill or low speeds. The Active enjoyed being thrown around fast corners as well, the Alnac 4G tyres from Apollo providing good

grip. Feedback from the steering wheel was amiss though, and it felt a tad too light. Hyundais are known to be easy on the pocket and we expect the i20 Active to follow the trend. The public launch will happen on March 17, which is when prices will be announced. Expect the i20 Active to command a premium over the Elite i20 in lieu of the extra bodywork and mechanical tweaks. The Elite i20 is very popular, which should give the Active an edge over its direct competitors. abhay@evo.in

THRILL OF DRIVING

The Benelli TNT 899 is as explosive as its name, says Abhay Verma

Top: Plenty of bottom end grunt on offer from the 898cc triple. Middle: Fat 190 section rear tyres offer more than adequate grip. Bottom: Smartly designed tail lights merge well with the underseat exhaust

Specification: Benelli TNT 899

Engine In-line 3-cyl, 898cc, liquid-cooled Transmission 6-speed Power 120bhp @ 9500rpm Torque 88Nm @ 8000rpm Weight 205kg 0-100kmph NA Top speed NA Price `9 lakh (estimated)

Verdict

+ Performance, exhaust note, styling - Feels slightly dated

PHOTOGRAPHy: VIKRANT DATE

ne of the world’s oldest motorcycle manufacturers, Benelli of Italy, is now in India, by way of their new Chinese masters. DSK Motowheels has brought the brand to the country, having had success with Hyosung over the past few years. The TNT preceding the 899 on the badge denotes Tornado Naked Triple, indicating an in-line triple-cylinder engine. Benelli is a revered brand that has made some interesting motorcycles in the past, including a supercharged 250cc race machine, way back in the 1940s! I’ve never ridden a Benelli before and the TNT 899 sounded interesting. How would it rate against established competition like the Kawasaki Z800, Triumph Street Triple and the Ducati Monster 795? Streetfighters are meant to look aggressive yet appealing, and the TNT does that with a different vibe. Styling is typically Italian, but more on the lines of the smaller, more exotic Italian manufacturers. It looks a lot more aggressive than most nakeds with the quirky headlight design and tank cowls on either side that house two radiators. The visual effect of the front end with the fat 50mm upside down forks and 120-section tyre especially when the lights are on is that of a snarling beast, ready to charge. Quality of components is decent, but not as great as the benchmarks set by others. There’s some carbon fibre bits as well such as the front mudguard, underbelly cowl and alternator cover which look nice though. At the back a tubular swingarm holds a fat 190-section tyre below a compact seat and an underseat exhaust. The underseat exhaust looks old-fashioned, but makes for a throaty exhaust note, more like a free-flow race exhaust. The liquid-cooled 898cc, in-line threecylinder engine aptly matches the brutish looks producing 120bhp, which is higher than the competition. The engine sounds a bit gruff at low revs but that feels more like a part of the beastly character. This is by far the sportiest sounding motorcycle in its class, and the whine from the Z800’s in-line four and Street Triple’s grunt are no match for it. The TNT has a raw feel to it right from the word go; initially it sounds a bit hoarse but as revs pile on it changes to a smoother, racier tone. At the same time the bottom end grunt surprises you with its might, and in a straight line the TNT can truly take off like a bat straight out of hell. It can accelerate to triple-digit speeds very quickly, and I reckon the TNT 899 will hit the ton in well under four seconds and should be able to outgun the competition without much trouble. The TNT was made to thrill. The torque curve is linear, and the bike pulled strongly to its 10,500rpm redline. First gear clutch wheelies are a cakewalk and it was a delight for stoppies as well. It’s easy to get carried away with the explosive performance, but you need to be careful as there are no electronics like traction control or riding modes. It doesn’t even get ABS in this day and age, but the brakes offer ample retardation from the Brembo callipers that grip large, 320mm twin petal discs at the front. The TNT is old-school in terms of handling too, especially at slow speeds where

March 21, 2015 PUNE

;;;34

it feels heavy. Around corners the heft helps though, making for a planted feel thanks to the loads of grip from the Michelins and the well-sorted suspension. Ride is on the stiff side. The TNT 899 lives up to its name. It has the go as well as the show. We estimate

its pricing will be on par with the Kawasaki Z800 and the Triumph Street Triple. It is a unique motorcycle but will it appeal to the Indian enthusiast, who wants nothing but the very best? abhay@evo.in

TGS takes a night trail around the city to look for places that will silence a grumbling tummy in the dark of night

By Barnalee Handique @barnalee

D

id the office overload leave you famished at midnight? Perhaps you were planning a late night movie and skipped dinner instead? How many times have you been left in the lurch as the clock strikes 11 pm and the city restaurants close doors? Of course, there are a bunch of five star hotels that operate round-the-clock coffee shops but they offer such limited menus. If a plain cheese sandwich won’t satisfy your wailing belly, then what you’re looking for is street-style, local taste. Team TGS takes you across Pune’s famous chow counters on this week’s food trail. Since the hour of the meal had been turned on its head, we decided to do the same with the food trail. Beginning with dessert, the yearning for scrumptious food started with a few smooth and luscious dollops of ice-cream.

Shri Swami Samarth Snacks Centre, Karve Road (near Mayur Colony)

Locating this little joint requires Sherlock Holmes-like skill. Way past midnight, the food cart is hard to detect. But a lone man sitting outside Swami Krupa Hall tells us we would get food here until 5 am. Peep in and a different, albeit welcoming, world enfolds. Here is a bustling food spot, indeed. The snacks centre is popular for its upma, vada and idli sambhar and vada pav as well as tea and coffee with crunchy cream roll. Thanks to quick and efficient service, we were done with our meal within ten minutes. Price - ` 20 onwards Time - 1 am to 5 am

Hinjewadi, the only area in the entire city that can boast of a traffic jam in the middle of the night, is a foodie’s delight. This home to workaholics has several restaurants open till morning

Rahul Khatri at his stall

Khatri Ice-cream Stall, Karvenagar

The Khatri stall at Karvenagar sells an assortment of homemade icecreams. A swelling crowd near the counter is proof of the ever-increasing popularity of the store. Unmindful of fl ies, dust, sweat and noise, patrons jostle and shout to make sure their orders are heard fi rst. We deftly placed our order even while we could manage just a foothold on the edge of the pavement. The menu, which offered 15 delectable flavours, was quite surprising. The pot ice-creams, a churning of milk and natural ingredients, garnished with dry fruits, were really tempting. We decided to be gluttonous and try not one, but three flavours - Rose, Mango, and Kesar Pista. The flavours tantalise the palate and the dry fruit garnishing add the right touch. Price - ` 25 to ` 110 Time – open until 1 am

TGS LIFE

Amruteshwar, Nal Stop

Dawn is about to set in and that means it’s time to beat the morning chill with a plate of steaming hot samosas and a cuppa of coffee. The menu at Amruteshwar has an assortment of South Indian delicacies as well as vada pav, coffee and tea. The joint is popular among students and morning walkers. According to patrons, poha is the hot favourite dish among the student community. The poha, tempered with mustard seeds and curry leaves, with a hint of fresh coconut, was delicious. The midnight hunt for food came to a satiating end with a hot coffee here. Reasonably priced, the joint is open from 3.30 am onwards. Price - ` 7 onwards Time – 3.30 am onwards

Market Upahar Gruha, Mandai Our next stop was at this 30–year-old joint located in the busy market area. Open till the wee hours of the morning, this place is always packed. Regulars know how to squeeze in through the gates even though it appears closed. When we walked into Market Upahar Gruha, the place was humming. People were packing food, some were eating in, and a gorgeous aroma of spices, rice and meat wafted in the air. The menu has a variety of offerings from snacks, biryani, misal pav, tea and coffee. Since patrons highly recommended the Chicken Biryani, we decided to go for it along with Egg Curry. We found the Chicken Biryani fresh and delicious. The rice, long grained and not the least bit oily, had just the right flavour of green chillies and lemon. The chicken was soft and well spiced, and the biryani was a nice change from the over-spiced and greasy rice preparations that you get in most restaurants in the city. The Egg Curry too was different from what is usually available at restaurants. The gravy was thick and aromatic, yet not overly spiced. Price – ` 10 – ` 100 Time – open 24x7

Eternia, Hinjewadi

Hinjewadi is, perhaps, the only area in the entire city that can boast of a traffic jam in the middle of the night, what with the odd-hour drops to and from the office. Despite the traffic mess, this workaholic’s heaven is home to this foodie’s delight with a menu featuring favourites - Dal Eternia (Kaali Dal), Rajasthani Laal Maas, Hyderabadi Dum Gosht Biryani, and of course the Choora Paratha, which should really be moved to the list of starters rather staying in the breads

section. We suggest you stick to the Indian, rather than the Chinese menu. As the World Cup matches are on, Eternia, along with most other restaurants in Hinjewadi, has drawn up a giant screen to air cricketing duels until the wee hours of the morning. We prefer getting there early to have Salman Khan sing us songs between courses before Dhoni’s boys take over. Price - ` 110 onwards Time – 11 am to 2 am

Swargate has over a dozen food carts, all serving egg dishes

We decided to try out the Aloo Mutter Ki Tikki and Bhatti Da Murg for starters. The crispy veg tikki is served with tomato ketchup. The night’s meaty order, however, is worthy of a lengthier description. The chicken, which tasted much unlike a regular Tandoori Chicken, turned out to be quite a mouth-watering experience. For main course, we asked the manager for a recommendation and he suggested Chhole Kulcha along with the onion chutney. The combination proved to be appealing. The gravy was so well-cooked that we lost count of the number of kulchas we gorged! Price – ` 10 to ` 300 Time - 24x7

Road side stalls at Swargate Bus Depot

There is a strange delight in walking, or hopping, around congested streets in the busy Swargate area. A large group of people walk to their own rhythm and in mismatched steps vie to walk on the sidewalks as vehicles create a background score. Swargate is popular for its street-side stalls that sell all kinds of dishes conjured out of a humble egg. These stalls start functioning post-midnight and as we approached them, we were greeted by the intoxicating fragrance of butter-toasted pav. Choose from a Sunny Side Up, that could be runny or well-cooked as you wish, the popular Omlette, desi Anda Bhurjee or an Egg Pulao. We ordered a plate of bhurji and watched as the vendor quickly scrambled the eggs with various spices and garnished the dish with coriander. There is a distinctly homely feel to the spicy Anda Bhurji, which a growling tummy just cannot refuse. If the sweet-tooth beckons, call for a high-on-sugar chai and a cream roll to dip in. Price - ` 30, for a single-egg dish Time – Post-midnight barnalee.handique@goldensparrow.com

Mallakhamb ensures gymnast remains supple and the sport being easy on the pocket are two reasons for its popularity among youngsters By Archana Dahiwal @ArchanaDahiwal

T

wo centuries have passed since Balambhatdada Deodhar, fitness instructor to the Peshwas, revived Mallakhamb as a fitness regime and, now, Pune’s teenagers are signing up to take the tradition forward. In the last few months, training centres in the city, as well as Pimpri-Chinchwad, have seen a steady rise in the number of new members. Parents, of course, are happiest to support a fitness trend that does not burden the monthly budget. Madhavi Shinde’s twins, Manav and Saurav, can play basketball. They have even tried their hands at athletics. But every few months, the kids tire of the sport Madhavi hopes they will find interesting.

Rishikesh Pagwane

This was until the 37-year-old mother heard of Kreedakul, Jnana Prabhodini Navnagar Vidyalaya’s sports club at Nigdi, where her children could learn the ropes at under-Rs 500, per month. “I am quite satisfied with the individual performance and fitness levels of my children ever since they took up Mallakhamb. The sport also involves a number of yoga exercises so my twins’ hyperactive energy is utilised fully. Their concentration and height has also increased ever since they’ve taken up Mallakhamb,” says Madhavi. Most of all, she is happy to support a traditional Indian sport, “We must do something to preserve our tradition too,” she smiles. On their part, the children are excited to be part of a sport that is as desi as it gets. Saurav points out that he and his brother have been enjoying their training sessions. “It’s fun to master the adventurous exercises,” the seven-year-old says, meekly. Prathmesh Kadam, 13, who also trains at the Kreedakul, adds, “Ever since I undertook Mallakhamb training, my flexibility and body strength have increased. The sport helps me workout the entire body at the same time.” Rigorous training has ensured that Prathamesh has been selected for the national-level competition that will be held later this year. Rishikesh Pagwane, a class e i g ht student of Jnana Prabhodini Navnagar Vidyalaya, believes that Mallakhamb not only improves physical fitness but makes the mind sharper too. “I have been practising Mallakhamb for the last four years and over time I have started to concentrate and focus better too,” he notes. Mallakhamb training usually takes place in the evenings, which makes it easy to fit into a child’s post-school s c he du l e . For most pa rents, afford-

ability is also a huge factor. Sports like football, cricket or tennis require branded sports gear, which cost upwards of Rs 3,000. Add to that, the monthly training fees for any of these sports is between Rs 500 and Rs 1,000. So, when a child gets disinterested, it burns a huge hole in the pocket. Mallakhamb, on the other hand, does not require fancy gear, just an interest is enough. Jnana Prabhodini Navnagar Vidyalaya has, in fact, been imparting training in the traditional sport to its students for the last decade and a half. As the demand for training has increased, the school has commenced evening classes for students from other schools as well. At present, nearly 300 students undergo Mallakhamb training at the Kreedakul and the number of calls enquiring about training has been increasing by the day. In a chat with TGS, Tushar Bargude, the senior-most coach at Kreedakul, agreed that the demand had increased in the last few months. “I believe the main reason that youngsters are attracted towards Mallakhamb is because it leads to total fitness, from your nail to hair. It is not just about physical fitness, but a student’s concentration, balance, as well as focus also better because of the sport,” Bargude claims. The Kreedakul takes in students from the age of 3.5 years. Another centre that imparts Mallakhamb training is New Pune Gymkhana, located on Senapati Bapat Road. The gymkhana trains boys and girls, from various age groups, in Mallakhamb as well as Rope Mallakhamb. Alok Deshpande, along with six other training staff, imparts ‘scientific training’ of Mallakhamb at the gymkhana. He says, “In this traditional sport, the practitioner’s overall development is the key. Mallakhamb develops the strength of the legs fingers, and even the stomach.” archana.dahiwal@goldensparrow.com
