50 Shades of Grey is seen as an effort to mainstream BDSM. A xxxxxxxxxxxx sexual taboo and a practitioner’s minority, Pune feels that judging a fetish or a community is a matter of individual discretion

By Yash Daiv @yash009

5

0 Shades of Grey has been delayed. Enough questions have been raised against the censor board, which claims that the film will be srutinised for cuts like any other Hollywood film. The prevailing question here is whether the movie’s theme ‘Bondage/Dominance, /Sumbission, Sadism/ Masochism’ (a crunched acronym BDSM), will be accepted in the mainstream by the masses. Or is it that it’s mainstreaming has cut down upon the authenticity of the concept itself? “I personally see there is nothing wrong with the subject. This film is definitely not made to promote BDSM. It maybe the dominating theme but everything depends on viewer’s discretion. Censors will clear the film after some cuts. It also means that the subject will automatically get an approval from the board members. And if Kamasutra was released in India, which was muddled into controversies yet was screened, 50 Shades of Grey will attract such attention too. People will oppose yet go and watch it thrice,” said Pune-based actor Pushkar Jog. Some Indian films have not shied away from sexual taboos or portrayal of sexual minorities. But they have met with violent reactions from the masses, especially for having wronged religious sentiments. Films like Fire which showed a lesbian relationship or Chetna which talked of rehabilitation of prostitutes have met with abhorrence. The subject is always presented with pathologically wrong characteristics, the masses are inundated with negative imagery to make viewers believe that the practise being shown on the screen is wrong or

weird. Similar is the case with BDSM. “Just like any other taboos that have been portrayed through cinema, BDSM will meet with adverse reactions. I feel we don’t have an audience which can think of the BDSM in a mature way. We live in a society where talks of sexuality are confined to bedroom,” said actor Amol Vhatkar. The public believes that BDSM is far from sex in traditional sense as it involves elements to provoke the partner, a sexual minority that is subbed for its practices. A normative mindset would declare such a relationship as unhealthy. In the Indian scenario, sexual minorities have been given the lowermost position in the society. Be it the prostitutes or the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender (LGBT) community, their status in India is illegal. “People have a lot of misconceptions regarding sexual minorities. Evidently they gather attention for having done something, which is conceived to be against nature, immoral and unacceptable. Judgement comes in quick. LGBT community has suffered it for wrong. BDSM is still new, the practitioner are not out in public. But just as we say that they are a sexual minority, their preferences should not bother anybody else. Nobody has forced them to accept,” said 24-yearold LGBT activist Tinesh Chopade. Whatever be the ramifications of the concept, the masses are eagerly waiting for the movie to hit the cinema halls for obvious reasons. It remains in the hands of censors on retaining the USP of movie which the viewer is looking forward to. yashdaiv@gmail.com

very mother has gone through the ordeal of getting her kids to eat vegetables. Aarti Bafna, founder, FoodyFix was one such mother too. But she decided to change things, not by forcing her kids to eat veggies, but by coming up with fun ways to get them to enjoy what they were eating. She started Foodyfix, which caters to the health and nourishment of kids through ’Healthy Junk Food‘. “I make food which looks as delicious as junk food but with a healthy twist in the ingredients. I not only cook recipes but also organise live cooking with kids’ sessions, demo sessions for moms,” says Aarti. On February 28, Foodyfix is organising a one-of-itskind, child-focussed food event. This session will aim at helping mothers adopt healthy cooking habits, and celebrity chef Dhvani Shah will demonstrate around 12 recipes, along with Aarti. She says, “I realised that forcing kids to have something they don’t like is not an option. So I started experimenting with recipes. I first started substituting ingredients with healthier options. I started involving my son in the process of plating and gar-

hey have the Grand, the Elite, the Fluidic and now this, the 4S and no, it is not preceded by Carrera. This 4S is in fact, preceded by Hyundai, followed by Verna, and the esses are what separate this ‘new’ Verna from the old one. The 4S stands for Style, Sophistication, Safety and Speed, and the revisions to the Verna revolve around these key words. Before this, the Fluidic Verna was sharply styled, both the 1.6-litre diesel and petrol engines were the most powerful in the segment, it had plenty of equipment and it was quite ho-hum when it came to driver involvement. The 4S is still ho-hum when you are looking for engagement. There’s no seat-ofthe-pants communication, the steering is numb and the car simply isolates itself from the driver. Verna owners love the power and torque surge the car has and that remains unchanged. What have noticeably improved are the high-speed manners of the 4S. The spring rates have been played with and I suspect the electrically assisted steering has been programmed to offer more weight when the car is at speed and these go some way in making the Verna feel more grounded. The high-speed ride has improved as well, there’s less wallow from the overly soft rear of the old Verna and in its place a flatter, more controlled ride. At lower speeds, there is a wee bit more firmness from the suspension but really, it’s comfortable enough. Hyundai has made a few minor changes to make the suspension feel more refined – the bump stops now have an etched

Ducati is differentiating the Scrambler from the its line-up, pegging it as a retro-cool, urban motorcycle for leisure riding. There is a huge range of accessories, ranging from T-shirts and shirts to caps, protective gear like helmets, riding jackets, boots, backpacks and a long list of custom parts. The bike will be offered in four different versions, each getting an individual logo. The Icon is the base version, followed by the Classic that looks more retro with a brown seat, orange paint and wire-spoked wheels. The Full Throttle is lower and sportier with a shorter handlebar, humped seat and Termignoni exhaust to replicate flat-track racers. The Urban Enduro is the off-road version with matte green paint, headlamp grille, engine bash plate and other similar cues. The bike for the press ride was the Icon in bright yellow. It is really small, and save for the longer wheelbase, the Scrambler doesn’t look any

here are motorcycles that quite literally take you into the future and then are some that take you back in time. Most Ducatis may belong to the first camp, but the all-new Scrambler is firmly in the second one. In the 1970s the Scrambler was Ducati’s do-it-all motorcycle. It was a big hit until production ceased in 1975 and the manufacturer decided to focus on sportier machines, that, while desirable, were intimidating for inexperienced riders. In a nutshell, Ducatis weren’t meant for everyone. Until now, that is. Ducati has sprung a surprise with the Scrambler, which revisits the classic, allpurpose motorcycle realm, while looking stunning. And it is neither expensive nor intimidating to ride. With the Scrambler, Ducati wants to lure new riders to its exciting world. That makes the Scrambler important for the Indian market in several ways, not to forget that Ducati is kick-starting its second innings here. Given its positioning as an entry-level Ducati, this isn’t surprising, since the Rs 6-8 lakh price segment is booming. We rode the Scrambler in Thailand, close to the very facility where it is put together for Asian markets. Ducati’s heritage and Italian bloodline make it impossible for them to design anything that is not lustworthy and the Scrambler is no exception. It is extremely simple in many ways, as Ducati wants to make the motorcycle more accessible to riders of varying calibres. The Scrambler is not just a new motorcycle but is in fact a new sub-brand for the Audi-owned manufacturer.

attoos have significant symbolic value. Right from certain tribes to polished communities the permanent inscription has held definite meaning. In earlier times a women’s forehead and her right hand forefinger would be inscribed for a long married life and for great culinary skills respectively. The art has definitely evolved over time. It has retained its symbolic nature and has become more personal. Every tattoo has a meaning. Pune folks have come up with trendy demands that comprise of vivid designs, scribal patterns and ethnic art, from Maori to Bio Mechanic to tribal art.

Aakash, a tattoo artist at Kraayonz, Koregaon Park is trained under the popular artist Sameer Patange. Aakash is known for his trained skills and his knowledge in versatile tattoo genre which he utilises in creating scintillating body suits. The oriental designs are most popular when it comes to body suits. “I create a melange by combining the old and the new school designs,” he said. Besides the large tattoos, people also come up to him for cover-ups. For one of his clients and good friend, Pranay Gupta, he used an elegant Koi fish and surrounding elements to cover up for an earlier one. The Maori art of lines and black work is also used extensively to cover up the old tattoos. People also come to him

with requests for names and small elemental tattoos. He counsels them by giving suggestions on variations in their designs. Arshah, an Iranian settled in India, is in the process of getting a body suit made at Krayon. The tattoos that he has made with Aakash mark some of the highs and lows he has lived through. “Every tattoo has a story behind it. A plain design is meaningless. It has to say something about you personality,” he said. Body suits take a lot of time, depending upon the persons bearing capacity and internal healing. Aakash dedicatedly works with his clients in completing the piece. He believes that unparalled dedication and creativity speak for his art which is splayed across his client’s body.

Out of the 100 people who visit RK Studio on FC Road, 80 go for covering up their ex-flame’s name. Rahul Chandrakant Gaikwad, the founder of RK Tattoo Studio says, “I suggest a cover up instead of removal because that leaves a scar,” he said. Besides the removal, those lovebirds who come to get the names tattoo, the ambigram names are a huge hit. People like to mix two names in the same format. Beyond the ink nomenclature, tribal designs are trending too. Most of these designed are infused with the bio mach 3d effect to give it that extra dimensions. Micheal Gaikwad, an event organiser got a bio mach tattoo done to go with the trend but later on went on to truly relate to it. “I relate to it for its exclusivity and it makes me stand out. I am an artiste and it helps as people remember me for it too. In the tattoo you can see fish, pumpkin, buttons, cap, stitches, eye,” he said. Rahul says that a person must thoroughly consider before getting a tattoo done. “One should not get a tattoo done just because it is trendy. It must reflect his or her personality, it should look like it a part in itself,” he said.

Being a veteran in the industry he too recommends rigorous consultation before getting a tattoo. “A trend is what the crowd makes, it rests on the individual’s part to give it a thought before getting inked,” he said.

Magic on your body: Tattoos activated by mantras Power tattoos are sacred geometric symbols that explore and explain the energy patterns that create and unify all the things. In the art of sacred geometry one can see as never before the wonderfully patterned beauty of creation. For instance, the molecules of our DNA, the cornea of our eye, snowflakes, pine cones, flower petals, diamond crystals, the branching of trees, a nautilus shell, the star, the galaxy we spiral within, the air we breathe, and all life forms as we know them emerge out of timeless geometric codes. They are said to be embedded in what are trending as power tattoos. “There is awareness that these designs can enervate and bring positivity to one’s life. It is also one possible way of connecting to the higher universe,” said Andy of Inkalab Tattoo. Some of the most common tattoos which clients opt for are the flower of life, Koi fish and the Warriors of light. The Flower of Life symbolizes the whole universe as well as its diverse components working together in harmony. On the other hand, the Koi fish is a Japanese lucky charm. It brings in good fortune and luck. It stands for courage and the ability to attain high goals. The warriors of light is associated with people who believe that have a higher purpose in their life. They intend to find the true meaning of their life and try to fulfil their dreams. tgs.feedback@goldensparrow.com

The interpretation that the viewer would carry away from the artwork is where his success lies. “I cannot be an extremist and force people by making them understand the painting. It all depends on what element from the painting excites them,” said Kadam. Street art is another medium that has resulted out of his continuous explorations in art. Last month, he ran a street art project in Pune, where 23 different artists from different countries painted large walls across the city. “The artworks had multilayered motifs. It is a powerful contemporary medium where the primary intention is to get the best strains of culture within one piece,” he said. The odyssey of reimaging the stories and tradition has transformed Kadam into a humbler person. It questioned, for him, the core existence and embraced everything what life had to offer. “I became humble, the ego vanished and found peace in things that mattered. What am I in relation to those anonymous artworks in the caves? Who might have carved them? There is a large tradition encapsulated in the anonymity,” he said. It was a journey of creation and vindication of the self. yashdaiv@gmail.com @yash009
