inutes before Louie Zamperini, an athlete-turned-war hero, boards a train to participate in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, his brother Pete tells him: “Louie, a moment of pain is worth a lifetime of glory”. From then on, pain becomes an internal part of Louie’s life — right from the 47 days he spent along with two other crew-members in a raft after a near-fatal plane crash in the sharkinfested Pacific, to the time he spent as a slave in two prisoner-of-war camps in Japan. It’s those inspiring words by Pete and the superhuman force of will that not just kept Louie alive but also taught him some of life’s important lessons. One of which is to have the heart to return to his captors in Japan many years later and forgive them. Unbroken is a highly inspiring and commendable tale of triumph and human endurance. But, director Jolie, who narrates the gut-wrenching true story of a real war hero with utmost conviction, takes too long to tell it. It’s ironic that it takes endurance to sit through this tale of endurance. But if you keep aside the film’s sluggish pace, there’s so much to take back from this awe-inspiring story of will power, survival and forgiveness. Jolie’s style of narration stands out, especially when she takes us back and forth in Louie’s life at crucial junctures of the story.

e’ve had enough haunted house stories! And seriously, filmmakers are running out of ideas to scare audiences. The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death makes a valiant effort of actually telling a ghost story, but it uses the old tricks in the book to scare viewers. There’s an emotionally scarred child latching on to a doll, chairs rocking in the middle of the night and loud knocks on the door. These don’t make our pulse race, heart pound or send shivers up our spines, at least not anymore. Although the film has an interesting premise, it’s not as involving or spookily atmospheric as the original.
But Jolie’s work in Unbroken becomes years of Louie, who as a wayward and aimless teenager spent most of his time stealing and generic after a point and she doesn’t have a clue smoking cigarettes and drinking. That’s not a bad price at all The GO+ is not quick, but not sluggish for three rows of seats, and would make this either. The claimed figure is just below the cheapest ‘MUV’ you could buy. Even if 67bhp from the three-cylinder petrol engine, you consider the third row notional (there’s borrowed from the GO hatch. The Original Hooligan Triumph’s Speed Triple was the original, fun to ride large capacity naked streetbike. Abhay Verma rides it to tell you more
I
t wouldn’t be wrong to say Triumph’s Speed Triple is the original litre-class streetbike. It was clearly aimed at enthusiasts looking for the thrill of riding, be it on daily commutes or in the hills on weekends. Most of us don’t go for track days very frequently, and fully-faired superbikes are not exactly comfortable for daily riding, which is why naked streetbikes like the Speed Triple make a lot more sense. So what’s this uber-cool Triumph that was famously ridden by Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 2 all about? Motorcycling madness at its best? Perhaps, I would have said before I rode it. Having ridden it now, I can vouch for the Speed Triple’s fun quotient. It’s almost as if the motorcycle detests being ridden on two wheels. There are some lethal doses of poke at the bottom end of the rev range and that makes pulling wheelies unimaginably easy, almost as if you don’t even need to try. The best bit though is that this is all friendly stuff – not the kind of scariness you would associate with the power wheelies that 200bhp litre-class superbikes are known for. But there’s a lot more to its character than just being a stunt-worthy 1000cc machine. Even if you aren’t the wheelie-fanatic that I am, the Speed endears itself to you with its friendliness. The Speed Triple was born out of the need to thrill in the real world without scaring its rider. If motorcycles were a drug, the Speed Triple would be rated very high for its potency. The bike was updated in 2011, when it ditched the famous twin-round headlamps in favour of the bug-eyed unit it sports now. Many found the design to be quirky, but I think they go well with the bike’s nature, along with the stubby design, minimal bodywork, tiny flyscreen and underseat

Four Idiots Why are our TV serials portraying young Indian women as helpless, guilt-ridden, tradition-bound victimsof their families and in-laws?
By Abhay Vaidya @vaidya_abhay
S
uyash Tilak, Subodh Bhave, Rashmi Anpat, Swarada Thigale, Niranjan Kulkarni and Tanvi Palav belong to the community of young, talented and attractive actors working in Marathi television serials. It’s fun to watch them. They have a strong, loyal fan following and they and their TV serials go about bagging awards for “Best Actor”, “Most watched serials” and other categories. The characters that they play such as Ishwari (Asawa Sundar Sapnacha Bangala); Raya and wife Pranjal (Javai Vikat Ghene Ahe), Shubra (Mazhe Maan Tuzhe Zhale) and Jairam (Ka Re Durava) is what we wish to discuss in these columns. There are thousands of people who would rather die than miss these serials. They typically behave like addicts who need their daily fix. Unfortunately, a number of homemakers, the invalid and the elderly are among those who have fallen in this trap. Homemakers relax in the afternoons once their husbands have gone to work, children to school and the cooking and
other housework is under control. They need light entertainment and diversion before the second round of their household duties begin in the evening. The elderly and the invalid are home-bound and the addictive nature of TV serials makes it easy to spend time. There are thousands others, like this writer, who find these very same serials intolerable. You feel like vomiting within minutes of watching them. You feel like going out of the room, muting the TV, changing the channel or switching off the idiot box completely. You don’t want to watch this “shit” yourself and don’t want your children to watch it either. Why this pendulum-like strong reaction? One set of people swear by these serials and the other set finds them trashy. These serials are all about succeeding in making family members feel guilty and keeping them trapped in their guilt. They are about extreme examples of envy, jealousy, competition and revenge. At the same time, there are characters in these serials which are warm and positive such as those of Arav and the writer Shekhar who stand by their wives amidst family and joint-family conspiracies. I find these serials stupid and regressive and yet, don’t mind watching them from time to time because it’s
What's the point?
"These serials are popular because they are “fantasy shielded in reality”. The way people like to watch everything bright and beautiful, there is also a side to us that enjoys dirt and ugliness. It is exciting for most. It is a sad fact but true." - Dr Bhooshan Shukla, Psychiatrist
TGS LIFE JANUARY 10, 2015 PUNE
"Limiting serial episodes will solve most of the script issues. It is sad how script writers are not respected and directors control the ship. Most of these serials start with a good intention but end up being stretched for revenue. The worse part is that these serials increase expectations and cause issues in households. In India, most women are ideal at home once husbands and children leave for work or school. For entertainment they turn to the TV and end up getting influenced by nonsense scripts." - Varsha Bhanu Kale, managing editor, Antarnaad
"Be it Bhojpuri or Bengali; Marathi or Malyalam, most of our serials, Irrespective of the language, play out to a typical formula. Young Indian women are shown as submissive characters, completely under the command-and-control of their a) in-laws b) parents and c) husbands; the weepy “Bharatiya Nari”, “Pati Parmeshwar” types who will suffer any amount of humiliation, injustice, mental and physical torture for the sake of their husbands and so-called “family honour”. instructive to see third-rate stuff so that you can then appreciate on how not to be. I have always been inspired by nature. The troubles and hardships of the downtrodden have always touched me. Gyandev is an avid reader and was inspired by the poems of Namdeo Dhasal, Nirmala Putul and Arun Kolhatkar. “I have read all their works, but Dhasal’s Manuskobita, Kolhatkar’s Jejuri and Putuls - Apne Gharki khoj have inspired me. For me, poetry is a means through which I can reach out to the masses, where I can be heard,” said Gyandev.
Gyandev has also written poems on social issues. She said, “My uniform has been a blessing to me. It has helped me to move forward and meet people from different sections of society. Every day, I come across people at the police station who have come to register a complaint or file a case. The anger, frustration and stress are mirrored on their faces. I interact with these people, hear about their issues and understand them. The agony, pain and suffering of these people is intense. In some of the later poems I have tried to portray the feelings and emotions of these people.” About the title of the book, Magazinenitun Suttey Goli, she said, “The name symbolises the space between the trigger and the nozzle.” There are 71 poems in the book. Published by Lokwangmay Graha from Mumbai, the book is priced at Rs 120 and has 118 pages. Gyandev is now working on a book of short stories. barnalee.handique@goldensparrow.com
