laying Dr Prakash Baba Amte on film must have been really easy for Vishwanath ‘Nana’ Patekar, since the actor had known the visionary social worker for so long. But Nana feels that he was unable to do complete justice to the role, and feels he has fallen short of depicting the larger than life character and his work on screen. In Nana’s own words, “I have been friends with the Amte family for the last 40 years. I was only 20 years old when I first visited Anandwan and was introduced to Baba Amte. I used to think that he was a sadhu, until I came face to face with the man and his mission. Sincerely done, goodlooking film Film: Fireflies; Cast: Rahul Khanna, Arjun Mathur, Monica Dogra, Shivani Ghai, Aadya Bedi; Writer-Director: Sabal Singh Shekhawat

By Subhash K Jha

Things fall apart, the centre cannot hold, and a tear-dimmed tide is unleashed on the characters of this intimate character-study. Fireflies is a well-intentioned ‘Indie’ film with a very clear-cut target audience. Admittedly there is an inherent pretentiousness attached to an Indian film where the characters, no matter how urbane, speak only in English. Even the songs in Fireflies are in English. That’s like a sonata in Sonepur Mela. Nonetheless there is a fascinating undercurrent of sensuality to the proceedings — crimson-red wine clinking in crystal glasses, diamonds rustling against silken saris, the rain splattering against highe-rise windowpanes to accentuate the pain... all of this compounded by a

very good-looking cast that seems to intuitively grasp the nature of the goings-on. Fireflies is like chapters out of a dreamily-written half-finished novels about incomplete lives. It’s the story of two incompatible brothers Shiv and Rana whose lives seem to run on parallel tracks. As played TGS Rating by Rahul Khanna and Arjun oood2 Mathur these two brothers could be long-distance cousins of Shashi Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan in “Deewaar”. Except that the script here lacks the commercial expanse of those masala epics on brotherly battles. Fireflies is an elegantly-cut nugget about sibling bonding and an unspeakable family tragedy. Playing warring brothers, Rahul and Arjun are fluently frictional, frequently If you like watching cinema on intense and constantly in character. disintegrating relationships watch Wonder what stops Arjun from this one. Rahul’s disintegrating relationship with his upper-class wife (theatre actress Aadya Bedi, very effective) is weighed against Arjun’s growing bonding with the mysterious Michelle (Monica Dogra, sensuous and self-assured). While Rahul gets into a doomed extra-marital relationship with a

former sweetheart Aila (Shivani Ghai, quite a find), his brother’s relationship too heads fast to a deadend. Cinematographer Shankar Raman shoots the Arjun-Monica relationship in the non-judgemental bustle of Bangkok creating in the alien environment a feeling of emotional panic barely concealed because...well, strangers are looking. It all comes together at the end not too satisfactorily. In spite of a very week end-game, the plot of “Fireflies” secretes enough intrigue and mystery to keep us watching. It may not be the greatest of drama on the conundrum of human relationships, but debutant director Sabal Singh Shekhawat gets the mood, tempo and characterisations right most of the time. Fireflies is an imperfect film about flawed characters who disguise their spiritual ennui in tailored postures of sophistication. It’s not a great film. But it’s sincere and a largely well-crafted piece of cinema about fractured lives frozen in compromised relationships. IANS

The film was obviously written as the shooting progressed, thereby providing a rationale for the vast expanse of incidents that are crammed into this jungle-adventure story. What we get to know finally from this film about the relationship between Man and Nature is, it is one helluva screwed-up alliance. This could have a brutal avatar of Born Free. You may not think much of the characters’s shallow shindings during the time of exceptional stress. But one thing is for sure. You’ve never seen anything like this in Hindi cinema. Halloween in Poland

NOVEMBER 8, 2014 PUNE

TGS Reader Madhura Pangarkar from Poland shares her Halloween experience

T

his year I celebrated both Diwali and Halloween in Europe. It was great fun to see children dressed up as little demons and to attend Halloween parties in clubs and restaurants. I found some similarity between how Diwali and Halloween are celebrated. In India, we light up ‘diyas’ and lanterns on ‘Narak Chaturdashi’, signifying the victory of good over evil. Likewise, the Halloween lanterns are symbols of overcoming demons and evil spirits. Halloween is celebrated on October 31, in the United States and in Scotland, Ireland and Britain. The Scots, Welsh and Irish races are descendants of Celtic tribes. In 500 BC, the Celts celebrated Halloween to mark the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. From the ancient Celtic holiday, modern Halloween has evolved to be less about evil spirits and such and more about fun, dressing up in costumes and sweets. Pumpkin lanterns and ‘trick or treat’ is synonymous with Halloween. Pumpkins are carved into jack-o’-lanterns on Halloween eve. In Ireland, jack-o’-lanterns were made out of turnips or potatoes. The carved pumpkins are

placed on doorsteps and porches. The trick or treat tradition hails back to ancient times, when villagers offered treats to demons, to satisfy their hunger. If the demon was satisfied with the treat, it would not trick the person or cast an evil spell.

Halloween is a fun festival for kids, an occasion to dress up like monsters, ghosts or witches. As they go from house to house, the children knock at the doors and shout “trick or treat”. People then give these children apples, buns and candy, to keep from being tricked. In Poland, Halloween is not celebrated with as much fervour as it is in the United States. I saw just a handful of Halloween celebrations. However, November 1 and 2 are national holidays in Poland, Reader being All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day respectively. It is believed that connect the deceased visit the living on the eves of these two days. Polish people keep the windows of their houses open to welcome the spirits or visiting souls. They visit their family’s graves and beautify them with flowers and small lanterns. Special masses are held with prayers for the loved ones and votive candles are lit in memory of the departed. It was a unique and wonderful experience to be in Poland at this time and now I am looking forward to the Christmas celebration!

Originally launched with the F8B, 796cc engine, the more powerful 998cc K10 engine in 2010 made for an even more entertaining Alto. This is the successor to that car. Launched in 2000, the Alto continues to be among the highest selling cars in the country but it’s getting long in the tooth. Maruti Suzuki is aiming to position the new K10 a notch higher than the Alto 800. But the highlight on the new K10 is the automated manual transmission. An entry-level hatchback with a two pedal arrangement is certainly a bold move. Of course you still get the five-speed manual and both these transmission options are hooked up to the K-next engine, the codename for this pepped up K10. Minor tweaks to the engine have resulted in a higher power output of 67bhp, while the maximum torque stands at 90Nm. Maruti is claiming a 15 per cent increase in fuel efficiency as well, with a claimed 24.07kmpl. The little threecylinder engine is peppy, eager to rev and the tweaks have also made it smoother. The lighter components have reduced its weight, and this has made the three-pot motor even quicker to rev. It showed vibrations at idle, but on the move, it felt smooth. The car felt light thanks to the lighter steering, which reduced effort significantly. Maruti has tweaked the suspension and the gas-charged shock absorbers improve the

balance between ride quality and handling. I wish the tyres were wider than the 155-sections. The AMT version is far more convenient than the manual. There is no clutch pedal, so you stick it in D Verdict and being fully automatic, it’s a boon + Sprightly in city traffic. The AMT tranny isn’t as smooth or refined as a conventional automatic or a CVT. The Alto K10 felt familiar and better to drive than before. The car is slightly wider and taller than before (width and height both are up by 15mm) though overall length is now down by a significant 75mm. The interiors have been redesigned completely too, with a new dashboard that looks better and more driver centric than before, apart from a more upmarket twotone beige-black treatment. The eryone is using these days. 2: Engine dash layout is more ergonomic than before, remains the peppy 1-litre 3-pot K10 and the front power window switches have been moved to the centre, under the gear lever from the doors. Plastic quality and fitfinish levels are noticeably better too.

The new Alto does feel more premium than before, and looks a lot more appealing. The headlights, grille, hood have all changed for the better, and the front end even reminded me of some fluidic design cues, especially from the Verna. The design of the doors and side panels hasn’t changed much, though the B-pillar has been blacked out. The rear looks a lot better, especially the tail lights. Overall, the new Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 is far better than before, and will add significantly to the 4.3 lakh K10s on the roads. The coup de grace is the AMT transmission and the new Alto will be the cheapest automatic car you can buy (at about Rs 3.5 lakh ex-showroom). In its new avatar then, the Alto remains cheap, cheerful and the perfect start to one’s motoring journey. abhay@evo.in

THRILL OF DRIVING

Power, handling, looks, equipment and street cred, the KTM RC 200 seems to have it all. Abhay Verma wonders if it has what it takes to be a leader in its segment

PHOTOGRAPHy: Gaurav s thombre

T

he RC 200 is the less potent version of KTM’s explosive new sportsbike, the RC 390. One could also consider the RC 200 the faired version of the Duke 200, and a motorcycle that aims to introduce a host of newer riders to track riding. While nearly identical to its naked sibling, some crucial changes have been effected to make the RC 200 better suited to track riding. These include changes to the rake and trail of the Duke, slight revisions to the chassis and rear subframe, and more importantly, changes to the gearing as compared to the Duke, which was known for its really short ratios. The RC 200 looks exactly like the RC 390, but a closer look reveals slight differences. Like the Duke, the RC 200 does not get the end-weights the 390’s clip-on handlebars get. The sides of the fairing are finished in matte black on the 200, while the 390 sports a glossy white finish. The tail piece under the pillion seat on the 200 is finished in glossy white, whereas the 390 has it in matte black. Most importantly, the RC 200 does not get ABS. Mechanically, the RC 200 is similar to the Duke 200, and the engine has the same crisp, refined feel, and revs up very quickly. On a race track, the RC 200 is most certainly fun to ride! It’s immense fun to push around a circuit, and it has what it takes to rule the entry-level sportsbike segment. Yamaha’s YZF-R15 has been the favourite amongst race track newbies for ages, but the RC 200 certainly has the potential to outshine the little Japanese machine on a track day, with both its explosive performance and handling. It could also help rookie riders hone their skills. The crisp throttle response, slightly taller ratios and brilliant dynamics make the RC 200 a proper scorcher. The MRF rubber at both ends is the same as the Duke 200 and offers lots of grip all round. This is one motorcycle that makes getting your knee down extremely easy, making you feel like a pro. The chassis, as we have seen on the Duke, makes for one of the best handling packages in its segment. The brakes offer lots of bite and are progressive enough to let you squeeze the lever hard all the way into the corner before backing off. The riding position is spot-on for hot laps around a racetrack, but it could prove cumbersome on the road. The low set clip-ons are perfect for the track, but the committed riding position will leave you with aching wrists on daily commutes. The RC 200 engine is the 199.5cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder of the Duke 200 so the power output is an identical 25bhp. The engine has a light, crisp feel, and feels slightly more refined than the 390’s, after riding the two bikes back-to-back around the circuit. However, this isn’t a motorcycle you would expect great fuel efficiency from, since it is primarily meant to be ridden fast. We expect efficiency to be similar to that of the Duke 200 since both bikes are mechanically identical, though the RC is slightly heavier than the Duke. As it stands, the RC 200 is the most explosive entry-level sportsbike in the country with its superb handling characteristics and peppy performance. KTM is known to get

things right, and the RC is another product that focuses on the job, of going fast around a racetrack in this case. With a number of track riding schools coming up and casual track days becoming common in the country, the RC 200 is a great motorcycle to be initiated into track riding with. Bajaj and KTM have ironed out the niggles that the first generation

Dukes suffered from, so the RC series of bikes should now be more reliable. The RC 200 retails at Rs 1.6 lakh ex-showroom New Delhi. At that price, it is the most affordable track-ready motorcycle in the country today, quite adept on the street, especially compared the R15, and a steal for the package it offers. abhay@evo.in

Pune brands go pan India

Five city brands have evolved into multi-city enterprises. Anjali Shetty explores...

PN GADGIL The brand: "P N Gadgil Jewellers have always adhered to the highest business values and standards inculcated by our forefathers. We believe in the purity of gold and quality of service. Being in this industry for 200 years, we have always aimed in creating a niche in the market by always catering to our customers' demands. Our customers include people from all class and segments. Our jewellery comprises silver, gold, diamond and platinum with designs that vary with the demands of different generations. Innovation and retaining the nuances of our tradition and culture makes us stand out from others." says Saurabh Gadgil, the owner of P N Gadgil. Challenges: People in different cities have different preferences and expectations, so understanding these and designing the

jewellery accordingly is a major challenge. The different cultures, religions and regions of India dictate the different perspectives on jewellery. The overwhelming and positive customer feedback inspires us to deliver the best. We have expanded to Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, Thane, Nagpur, Latur and Mumbai. We also have a store in California. Our expansion plans include stores in Nanded, Chandrapur and Goa, in 2015.

Kaka Halwai The brand: One of Pune’s oldest and most popular confectioneries, Kaka Halwai's customers range across all classes and communities. “Our family has been in the mithai business since 1892, the legacy continuing for six generations. This has inspired us to take the mithai experience to the next level, available to more customers across the country,” says Sachin Gadve, partner of Kaka Halwai. "We have just finished our strategic planning but still have to finalise a lot of things,” he said. "Eventually, we want to set up a national network. For this expansion, we are working out plans, branding, the products and so on. We started by introducing Keppys, a sub brand that is available across the state,” he said.

T

he logical move for a flourishing business is setting up a branch or even branches locally. To evolve further, the business will then expand with branches in other cities. The four Pune brands, ABS Fitness & Wellness Club. Kaka Halwai, Hastakala and NIKS International, have done just that, evolving from local entrepreneurs to a thriving, national status.

ABS Fitness & Wellness Club Nikhil Botre, NIKS International

M.B.Ashtekar Jewellers NIKS International The brand: Saswad resident and owner of NIKS International, Nikhil Botre has always drawn towards the grooming industry. “When you start a business you have to simultaneously think of expanding. My basic idea after starting NIKS International was to reach every possible place in the country. I studied at Singapore Cosmoprof Institute and realised then that India needed these standards in the field of make-up, beauty and hair. Not everyone has access to such places, so I decided to bring in a franchise model following demands from my clients. I have a client who moved to Bhopal after marriage. She would travel down to Pune for a haircut. She suggested opening up branches in other places. We have a module which we will standardise across all branches," said Botre. Challenges: Botre believes that if his brand creates an impact, customers are sure to come. Branches in: Lucknow, Madhya Pradesh

The brand: Tushar Ashtekar, MD of M.B.Ashtekar Jewellers says, " M B Ashtekar Jewellers have revamped brand identity and processes to become expansion ready. Our target customers are farmers, landowners from small towns around Pune, who have not invested in customised jewellery yet. Being one of the oldest jewellery brands in the city, we have a perfect mix of experience and modern techniques of jewellery making, along with goodwill, top-notch service and customer-friendly policies. Challenges: Our biggest challenge is finding the right place. We have been conducting regular surveys to understand our customers' preferences and buying patterns so we can provide them exactly what they are looking for. We have a wide collection of designer silver and gold jewellery and gem stones.

The brand: Abhimanyu Sable has been involved in the fitness industry for 15 years, and the setting up of his own ABS Fitness &

Our immediate expansion plans include small markets around Pune like Wagholi and Chakan. In the next phase we plan to expand to cities like Ahmednagar and Aurangabad.

YOUR RETAIL COACH Your Retail Coach (an initiative of Mind-A-Mend Group) is a retail business management company. Varun Shah, CFO at YRC says, "Only six per cent of Indian retail is currently organised. More than 90 per cent of the Indian retailers run in an unorganised or haphazard manner. Most common challenges faced by retailers during expansion include lack of standardised policies, procedures or processes, which gives the employees as well as the customers the liberty to run the show in their way. Nikhil Agarwal, COO at YRC says, "Every five years, the technique of doing any business, changes. One such major change or challenge, is getting your organisation “growth ready". Rupal Agarwal, CSO, at YRC says, "One of the biggest challenges we face as Consultants are that the retailers have their fixed "Retailers have mindset and they do not wish to get out of their comfort zone fixed mindsets and and face the change."

they do not wish to get out of their comfort zone and face the change."

Challenges: Few of our clients had difficulty to remotely monitor the stores to ensure the standard processes are followed by the staff at stores as well as warehouse and the customers are given optimum service."Through our process audits, stock audits and mystery shopping, we help them gain insight into every department of the organisation, right from purchase to warehouse, from HR to accounts, from marketing to sales and many more. Audits trigger the most important ability of our living, ie, “thinking”, which we ignore because of daily chores.

Abhimanyu Sable, founder, ABS Fitness

Gym & juice

Wellness Club in the city was a logical step. Sable was among the first city enterprises to venture out, by opening a wellness club in Raipur. “The goodwill and affection of ABS members has given me the courage to venture out of Pune. Initially all that ABS had was word of mouth publicity. Our motto that we live by is 'the club is a place to stay fit and unwind'. Fitness today is important to everyone. We were stressing the importance of fitness seven years ago. Today, we have 20 clubs across the country,” says Sable. The latest club is at the Sachin Tendulkar Gymkhana, Mumbai. "What sets us apart is the focus on caring. We are not just a room full of equipment and trainers. We ensure we know your needs and guide you accordingly,” Sable says. Challenges: "Maintaining the high standards, the quality of services and a staff of qualified trainers are major challenges. We have clubs in Nandurbar (Gujarat) and Latur, where people are very keen on fitness, but finding capable trainers in such places is difficult. A trainer from Mumbai does not want to work and live in such remote towns. This is why I have started an in-house academy, and I offer my 100 per cent guaranteed placement. It is a winwin situation,” Sable says. Branches in: Bangalore, Mumbai and Raipur anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

The ten golden rules of shoe care Bespoke shoemaker Naman Shah introduces us to the types of men’s shoes and their appropriate function. He can be reached at naman@cuero.in 1.

New shoes should initially be worn for no more than two to three hours at a time. Only when the shoes and the feet are completely accustomed to each other should the risk be taken of wearing them for a whole day. 2. A pair of shoes should not be worn on two successive

days, but should be given 24 hours to recover after each wearing 3. They should always be put on with a shoehorn, regardless of whether they are lace-ups, buckled shoes, or slip-ons. 4. When taking off lace-up shoes, the laces should first be loosened at every point, allowing the foot to slip out of the shoe easily and effortlessly. 5. Custom-made shoe trees must be inserted in the shoes immediately after removal. 6. Shoe trees should be inserted immediately even if the shoes have been saturated with rain or snow. The shoes should then be left to dry, lying on their sides rather than standing on their soles, for at least 24

hours. 7. It is advisable to wipe the shoes down and polish them up with shoe cream after each wearing, even if they appear to have lost none of their original gleam. 8. If to be worn for an extended period, a thin coating of cream should be applied, a textile bag obtained from the shoemaker, and the shoes placed inside it in their original box. 9. Custom-made shoes should never be lent to somebody else, as no two pairs of feet are the same. 10. Every new shoe has its own special character: Its true beauty will not appear unless it is worn with appropriate clothing and on appropriate occasions.
