A riveting biopic Film:The Imitation Game Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Rory Kinnear, Allen Leech; Director: Morten Tyldum
By Troy Ribeiro

ased on a true story, The Imitation Game is a tribute to Alan Turing, a man who under nerve-racking pressure helped shorten World War II by nearly 2 years and in turn saved a million lives. Treated as a mystery film where detective Robert Noch of Manchester Police is TGS Rating investigating a break-in at Prof Alan Turing’s oooo2 home, the non-linear narration reveals the life of the enigmatic British mathematician and cryptanalyst and his time with British
Intelligence, MI6 outpost at Bletchley Park. It is here that Alan’s team helped crack the Nazis’ unbreakable Enigma code with a machine he created, that would become a prototype for the modern day computer. Like any other biopic, it shows that Alan’s life was not a bed of roses. With an emotional jigsaw play of trust and betrayals, the script by Graham Moore is adapted from Andrew Hodges’ 1983 biography, Alan Turing: The Enigma. The film is a watered down version of Turing’s short life, but nevertheless the screenplay — taut, engaging and dramatic — has a plethora of poignant
moments along with life lessons that propel the tale forward. It offers ample insight into the character of the mysterious Alan Turing. With excellent production values, the story arc is as familiar as they come for the biopic genre. The first half of the film sets in the intrigue quotient, while the second half lingers on for a bit longer with some technicalities involved since Alan is developing an Electrical brain, a digital computer. It’s the final act with its sad and unjust revelation that feels a bit rushed. The dialogues loaded with sarcasm and self-deprecation reflect the stiff upper lip British humour to the core and
Reviews keep you hooked. Director Morten Tyldum has delivered a finely textured film that is superbly crafted and tastefully projected with brilliant performances. The film belongs to Benedict Cumberbatch and he portrays Alan Turing beautifully. He dwells into Alan’s complex psyche to relay the right amount of cockiness and arrogance of the confident genius. He also manages to add that nervous twinge during conversations and oscillate from being a sensitive person to an adamant “monster.” And finally, it is his transition to a helpless defeated human being at the end that is touching. But it is the sensitive portrayal of Alex Lawther as the young Alan that contributes largely to what makes Cumberbatch’s character convincing. They are ably supported by a strong and impressive cast comprising of Keira Knightley, Mark Strong (II), Mathew Beard and Mathew Goode as his coworkers as also Joan Clarke, Stewart Menezies, Peter Hilton and Hugh Alexandre, who are ace cryptanalysts too. Visually with gripping metaphors along with snapshots of WWII and a colour palette that’s apt, the film captures the era and the fine nuances of artists to perfection. Over all, The Imitation Game is a good introductory film for those who are not aware of Alan Turing and it is worth a watch. — IANS

ajasthani or Rajwada cuisine is known for its mélange of flavours, that has been derived from different cultures. The royal families culinary tastes have been influenced by the Mughals, while the common man’s cuisine has remained unchanged over centuries. Maharaj Bhuralal Prajapati, chef, JW Marriott says, “With large desert and arid areas, water has always been scarce in Rajasthan. It is one of the reasons for the domestication of milk-yielding cows and buffaloes in Rajasthan, where milk and dairy products such as ghee and yoghurt are essential culinary ingredients.” With the dry and dusty land, cultivation of vegetables is arduous and the people therefore resort to drying and storing vegetables. The dried vegetables are soaked overnight before cooking, which restores the colour and texture of the vegetables. Rajasthani vegetables are slow cooked on a low flame.

We started with 50 to 60 films, and now we screen 200 films. PIFF has also been extended to include Pimpri Chinchwad, bringing the number of screening theatres to eight. We feature a lot of commercial cinema from across the world. We would like to screen art films but budget constraints do not allow us much leeway,” Dr Patel said. Pune film-loving audience and its heritage that is steeped in cinema are a big reason for PIFF’s success. The PIFF 2008 was flagged off on a musical note by popular singer Sudesh Bhosale and his son Siddhant, who performed tunes from Dev Anand and Rajesh Khanna films.

Hundred years of Indian cinema was celebrated, with screening of films from the NFAI cache, such as Raja Harishchandra, Kaliya Mardan, Sant Tukaram, Awara, Pather Panchali, Mother India, Ajantrik, Duwidha, Nishant, Khandar, Mukhamukhan, to name a few.

enowned film-maker Jabbar Patel was once asked by former MP Suresh Kalmadi, regarding how to go about putting Pune on the international map. “This made me think. I bought books and guides about Pune, which has all the heritage and historical places needed for it to be a prime tourist destination. Besides, Pune is also home to the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and National Film Archives of India (NFAI), which make it an ideal venue for international film festival. I voiced my views to Kalmadi and he told me to go ahead with the film festival concept. Eventually this materialised in the form of Pune International film festival (PIFF), in 2002.” “For the first two years PIFF was non-competitive, and finding good films was difficult. But it still was exciting to contact film personalities around the world, and urge them to send their films for screening when the film festival was at its nascent stage,” he said. Initially, PIFF received films through the foreign embassies and consulates, and through Dr Patel’s many contacts on the international film circuit. In 2004, the then chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh announced a purse of Rs 10 lakh for the Prabhat Film company’s 75th year celebrations. The state government was also urged to support PIFF, which by then had launched a world competition section. Good films were coming but roping in local film theatres to collaborate with PIFF was not so easy. Inox and NFAI were the only venues then. However, NFAI itself was a rich source of films. It was called ‘Gems from NFAI’, and unveiling these NFAI film treasures for public viewing was a richly rewarding idea. The competition section also sparked great interest among global film-makers, but rounding up a reputed jury took some doing. The majority of the PIFF crew and volunteers were very young, as were

‘Lighting up the
Pune stage’ TGS Life speaks to talented members of Pune’s theatre groups, who are making a mark in the world, after starting out as students

P
une has been an important venue for Marathi theatre. There is a happening buzz around theatre, with a number of festivals spotlighting this live art form. TGS Life catches up with some theatre groups from the city, to outline their coming into existence and evolution..
"Our company was launched six years ago. The members of our group share a common bond, which is our love for theatre. The rapport we share makes whatever we do a fun experience rather than work. The intention has never been to earn money but to experiment and create something people can enjoy as well as learn from." Aalok Rajwade, actor-director, Natak Company
The scripts are based on the current socio-political scenario of our country. “Dharmakirti Sumant writes our scripts but we also have used scripts by stalwarts like Satish Alekar and Sadanand More,” Rajwade says. The group has also performed overseas and won acclaim for its performances. “Geli Ekvees Varsha was presented at the Italian theatre festival, Universo Teatro in Benevento where we received a special jury mention. We have won the Thespo award consecutively for three years. We have performed at various venues in Mumbai and across Maharashtra,” Rajwade said. It is their own conviction of what they do that enables them to connect with an audience, Rajwade believes. The group includes theatre luminaries like Nipun Dharmadhikari, Abhay Mahajan, Amey Wagh and Siddharth Menon. Swatantra Theatre launched by Abhijeet Choudhary, in 2006, is a Hindi theatre group. “My idea was to bring Hindi theatre and plays to Pune and offer upcoming actors a platform to perform. We don't have any criteria for our members apart from commitment and dedication,” says Choudhary. Swatantra Theatre plays portrays social issues and truth. “In our plays we highlight all that exists in society,” he adds.
Educate and entertain
The start: Natak Company was formed with the aim to both educate and entertain. Its founder, actor/director Aalok Rajwade says, “Our company was launched six years ago. The members of our group share a common bond, which is our love for theatre. The rapport we share makes whatever we do a fun experience." Natak Company is a collaboration between students of Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce and Fergusson College, who have continued with the endeavour after stepping out of college. Rajwade has featured in Rama Madhav and Vihir. “The intention has never been to earn money but to experiment and create something people can enjoy as well as learn from,” says Rajwade, who directs all the group’s plays.

nuradha Upadhyay is an artist and painter, who has worked arduously at attaining proficiency as an artist. She also has a fervent obsession with and is an avid collector of tribal Indian art. So ardent is she that she has set up her own atelier in Pune, called ‘Anukriti’, to promote tribal art. Anuradha’s landmark moment happened in 2011, when she travelled with her family to Bhubaneshwar in Odisha. She experienced a life-changing event when she saw ‘Pattachitra’, a form of traditional Indian art. ‘. Anuradha was so completely fascinated and intrigued, that she defines this as a God-sent opportunity. Motivated intensely by the Pattachitra aesthetics, Anuradha Art immediately began her training in

Anuradha’s collection has a vivid spectrum of tribal art, including puppets from Rajasthan, artworks from Bastar, Madhubani, Pattachitra, Warli, Dokra tribal art and painting. After attaining proficiency, her creative instincts took over. Putting to creative use what she had learnt and absorbed from Pattachitra, Anuradha set about devising her own interpretation and artistic impression of the tribal art forms. A fusion of
Madhubani and Warli painting styles, the subjects of Anuradha’s paintings were Ram-Sita, Rasleela and Radha-Krishna. She also experimented with Dokra art, using painted, handmade paper. Anuradha’s art throws up traditional Indian aesthetic colour schemes, with splashes of crimson, cobalt blue, black, white and golden yellow. She also took up painting on crab shells. Anuradha has also delved deep into the domain of Indian tribal art of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar, discovering and collecting paintings, wall hangings, tableware and metal sculptures. Anuradha’s collection includes a vivid spectrum of tribal art, including puppets from Rajasthan, artworks from Bastar, Madhubani, Pattachitra, Warli, Dokra, album jewelry, a rich mélange of Indian tribal culture and heritage.
