Performance art is set in a time and space of the artist’s choosing. It is a take on everyday life, the grandeur of regularity and the intricacies of the surroundings. “It is also a political statement, a mirror to class, identity, feminism, gender, sexuality and identity politics,” said Saikia. The act based experience largely depends on how it is perceived by the audience. “It depends on how and what a person decides to perceive, which in turn is defined by the consciousness,” he said. Thus, there is no such homogeneous audience as yet in the country. In such cases the artiste provides a context which acts like a disclaimer. “The irony of the situation is that even though performance art has come from the West, the artistes see India as a ground for new subjects to act. The literature of religion and rituals is a fodder for their performances,” said Saikia. Another reason why performance art has not entered the mainstream is because of the rigid mentality of the people. Saikia classifies it as ‘bourgeois aesthetics’. An artist is expected to transcend these mental barriers but needs to prepare in his or her own way. Saikia says, “I do a lot of homework, understand the space, refer to textbooks and talk to the public of the city to understand the space. The performance has to be space specific.” Saikia also writes for Assamese newspapers like Asomiya Pratidin, Satdin, Janambhumi and magazines like Prantik and Satsori. yashdaiv@gmail.com

Film: The Theory of Everything Director: James Marsh Cast: Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, Charlie Cox, Emily Watson, Simon McBurney, David Thewlis, Christian McKay

James Marsh charges the simple chronological narrative by picking up the crucial moments from their life. Yet, it does not seem as if he has tried to show a life in moments. In fact, it is a realization that life has to be lived and felt as a whole; it is a survival of two different minds who have decided to live together. However, the movie concludes on confusing note. The movie is a heart-wrenching portrayal

of a marriage and also the genius of Stephen Hawking. These events unfold without much confusion but in the end one wonders whether Hawking’s priorities kill the essence of the film. But then, it is just a matter of interpretation as it is not a great disappointing hurdle. The last cinematic sequence probably compensates for this tiny bit of ambiguity. yashdaiv@gmail.com

Baby: Entertaining despite a silly plot Film: Baby Director: Neeraj Pandey Cast: Akshay Kumar, Tapsee Pannu, Anupam Kher, Kay Kay Menon Ratings: 3.5

it in such style and a breakneck pace that one can’t help but enjoy the ride. Sure, most of the plot points in Baby come dangerously close to the utter stupidity found in films like Holiday, but it’s very entertaining. It’s also a rare piece of event cinema — because how many Akshay Kumar movies turn out to be anything besides awful?

irector Neeraj Pandey’s films are a mixture of old school Bollywood formula, slick modern execution and bouts of intense suspense with some bombastic, social commentary. His films don’t have clueless idiots with walkie talkies pretending to be commandoes. They have reasonably realistic depiction of police work and ludicrous ‘holy cow that was awesome’ thrills. His latest venture Baby is another perfectly outlandish and white-knuckled action thriller TGS Rating — a seemingly intelligent but mindless piece of well-oiled ooo22 escapism that delivers several crowd-pleasing moments of action mayhem. And Pandey does

Baby is supposedly based on real life missions and characters, but the disclaimer before the movie mentions that all characters and events in the film are fictitious. This is probably Pandey pulling the prank that the Coen brothers did in Fargo, but more on that later. The film chronicles Baby’s final mission, starring Akshay Kumar as

Ajay who’s hunting down Kay Kay Menon’s Bilal Khan, an escaped terrorist. Ajay’s hunt for Bilal takes him (and us) through seedy streets in Bombay, the bylanes of Turkey, the mountains of Nepal, and the desert sands of Saudi Arabia. Also in the mix is a nutty, India-bashing, hate-spewing Mullah Maulana Mohammad (played by Pakistani

actor Rasheed Naz), a not so subtle derivation of LeT’s Zaki ur Rehman Lakhwi. Baby ups the body count and delivers the goods when it comes to gritty action, non-stop thrills, mood and style. What mainly works here is the sense of urgency. Our hero sticks to the mission instead of veering out for item numbers and even though he’s larger than life, he remains in a fairly realistic mode. There’s some interesting hand-to-hand combat, and Pandey somehow manages to balance the grittiness and realism balance the masala of commercial films. It’s quite refreshing to see a film that caters to its target audience and at least tries to not insult it. So no matter whether you like the film or not, it’s hard to deem Pandey a thought provoking filmmaker because Baby seems a lot sillier a few hours after you see it. Pandey is a smart, commercial filmmaker though, because Baby basically exists for the singular purpose of filling three hours of your life with slickly-crafted and frequently outlandish thrills.

Mangalorean winter treats

Neer Dosa

Ingredients One cup raw rice salt to taste ghee for greasing Method: Soak the rice in water for at least two hours. Then drain and wash it. Add water and grind to make a very fine batter. Add salt and more water if necessary to make a thin batter of pouring consistency. Heat a small non-stick tava and sprinkle a little water on it. It should steam immediately. Wipe hard with a slice of onion or potato. Grease the tava with a little ghee and pour a ladleful of batter from a little height so that you get plenty of holes. Do not try to spread the batter with a spoon. Cook the dosa on one side only, taking care to see that it does not brown. Fold it twice to make a quarter circle. Repeat with the remaining batter to make more dosas. Serve hot.

Moong Payasam

Ingredients 1/4 cup yellow moong dal (pasi paruppu / split green gram without skin) 1/4 cup grated or powdered jaggery 1/2 cup milk 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder One teaspoon + 1 teaspoon ghee Six cashewnuts, broken into halves Water Method: Heat one teaspoon ghee in a small pan and fry cashew nuts until light brown. Transfer them to a plate. Heat remaining 1teaspoon ghee in same pan and roast moong dal until light brown. It will take about 3-4 minutes to turn light brown on medium flame. Cook roasted moong dal in a steel/aluminium pressure cooker (3-litre capacity) with 3/4 cups water for 3 whistles. Use medium flame to pressure cook roasted moong dal. Turn off heat and leave it idle to let pressure come down naturally. In the meantime, dissolve jaggery in 1/4 cup hot water (use of hot water will make it dissolve faster). Strain it through strainer and discard any impurities it may have. Open lid of a pressure cooker carefully and mash moong dal with the help of large spoon or spatula. Add jaggery syrup, milk and cardamom powder and cook over medium flame. Stir to mix well and bring it to boil. When it starts to boil, reduce flame to low and cook until thick, for about 4-5 minutes. Stir it continuously to avoid sticking and burning of dal on the bottom and sidewalls of cooker. Turn off flame and transfer it to a serving bowl. Garnish paruppu payasam

ncluding almonds in your daily diet could help reduce belly fat, a well-established heart disease risk factor, says a study. A daily snack of 1.5 ounces (42 gram) of almonds instead of a high-carbohydrate muffin, eaten as part of an overall healthy diet, improved a number of heart disease risk factors in study participants. "Our research found that substituting almonds for a high-carbohydrate snack improved numerous heart health risk factors, including the new finding that eating almonds reduced belly fat," said lead researcher of the study Claire Berryman from Pennsylvania State University. "Choosing almonds as a snack may be a simple way to help fight the onset of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases," Berryman said. The twelve-week, randomised, controlled clinical study, was conducted in 52 overweight, middle-aged adults who had high total and LDL (low-density lipoprotein) or "bad" cholesterol but were otherwise healthy. Participants ate cholesterol-lowering diets that were identical except that one group was given a daily snack of 42 gram of whole natural almonds, while the other group was given a banana muffin that provided the same number of calories. Participants were provided all meals and snacks in amounts based on their calorie needs to maintain body weight, and followed each diet for six weeks. The results showed the diet containing the almond snack, compared to the muffin snack, decreased abdominal fat, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol non-HDL-cholesterol and other blood fats. In addition, the diet with the muffin snack reduced HDL (good) cholesterol more than the almond diet.

"Consumption of tree nuts should be encouraged as part of a healthy diet by health professionals to improve diet quality and nutrient adequacy," said Carol O'Neil, professor at Louisiana State University's agricultural centre.

He also stressed the need for nutrition education programmes that increase awareness and consumption of tree nuts. The team found that when it comes to nutrient adequacy for most nutrients, tree nut consumers fared better than non-consumers. "This new research further supports the need to encourage people to eat tree nuts for overall health," stated Maureen Ternus, executive director of the International Tree Nut Council. We need to encourage people to grab a handful of nuts every day, he added. IANS

perts. The warning about snacking on sugary fruit comes from a poll of 458 dentists, hygienists and dental professionals. Four out of five professionals warned that snacking on fruits contributes to decay, plaque build-up and enamel erosion, and a third said that apples can cause major damage to teeth and gums, alongside chocolate and biscuits, reports femalefirst.co.uk. The findings echo research by Professor David Bartlett at the King's Dental Institute, which found eating fruit may be as damaging to dental health as carbonated drinks. Just under half of the experts questioned in the poll warned that fruit juice is also a key cause of tooth and gum problems and more than a third pinpointed savoury snacks such as crisps as problematic too. "We may be keeping our teeth longer, but there are still gaping holes in many people's dental health regimes,” said Robin Seymour, Emeritus Professor of Dental Sciences at Newcastle University and leading periodontologist. "A 2009 national survey of adult dental health found that 23 per cent of adults brush their teeth only once a day and, despite the popularity of more efficient powered toothbrushes, many of those who brushed twice a day still had visible deposits of plaque, which cause dental decay and gum disease,” added Seymour.

Mercedes goes straight for the A3 in the compact luxury segment

T

he CLA-Class is the smallest sedan to bear the three-pointed star and rounds off Merc’s NGC (New Generation Car) offerings for India, along with the A-, Band GLA-Class. The car that you see here is the saner version of the bonkers CLA 45 AMG we all love. Taking inspiration from the Merc CLS, the CLA too gets a swoopy rear roofline that lends real drama to the styling. Along with the lovely LED-detailing in the optics and that aggressive grille, the CLA is a properly stunning car to behold.

Specification: Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class Engine In-line 4cyl, 1991cc, turbocharged Transmission 7G dual clutch automatic Power 181bhp @ 5500rpm Torque 300Nm @ 1200-4000rpm Weight 1510kg 0-100kmph 7.8sec (claimed) Top speed 235kmph (claimed) Price `26-38 lakh (est)

cruise, but it doesn’t like being pushed hard and gets very noisy and runs out of breath. Both engines are mated to the smooth and refined 7-speed twin-clutch automatic. The CLA has a nice, sporty chassis and over the few corners we found in Goa she displayed great front-end bite and a strong resistance to understeer. It steers with great agility and precision. The brakes are also up for some action with good bite and feel, complementing the character of the car very nicely. The CLA rides like a Merc ought to, albeit with sporty intentions. The ride height has been raised for Indian roads and it doesn’t touch down even on larger speed-breakers. It’s a comfortable car with which you can undertake long road trips. The space-saver wheel is strapped into the boot eating up a lot of usable luggage space, however. Competition for the CLA will be restricted to the Audi A3. To sweeten the deal, Mercedes now boasts an ownership cost of `1.99 per kilometre, claimed to be the lowest in this segment. Pricing, of course, will be key to the CLA’s success and finding that sweet spot between the A- and C-Class will be crucial (though not difficult as the C has now moved up the ladder). We expect it to start at `26 lakh, going up to `38 lakh for the loaded variants, though by the time you read this, official prices will have been announced. All said and done, I’d stick my neck out and say Mercedes is on to a winner with the CLA. sirish@evo.in

THRILL OF DRIVING

The Unicorn CB 160 improves upon the Unicorn we know. Abhay Verma rides one and finds it is an absolutely fuss-free motorcycle

PHOTOGRAPHy: Vikrant Date

T

he Unicorn CB 160 is Honda’s attempt at strengthening its position further in the 150cc segment, especially with newer machines from other bike makers threatening to eat into its market share. The Unicorn’s engine has been revised so heavily it deserves an all-new tag. A host of changes have been effected to reduce friction and weight to aid efficiency and refinement. These include a longer stroke (resulting in the higher displacement) apart from counter balancing, new bearings and better heat management. The seat is longer, and the new engine and seat together called for a revised chassis, making for an all-new tag for the motorcycle. It’s interesting how the Trigger and the old Unicorn continue to co-exist alongside this new Unicorn, though we believe in time the older machines will be phased out. What’s noteworthy is that the new Unicorn 160 is both lighter and more powerful than the Trigger, which is supposed to be relatively sportier. In essence, the Unicorn 160 feels like a revised, refreshed version of the older Unicorn, and is a lot better thanks to a host of small changes and improvements all round. The all-digital instrument cluster uses a fresh design, and even brings to mind some of the Japanese bike maker’s larger commuter machines sold internationally. On the flip side, there’s no engine kill switch yet, and the finish of some of the plastics, such as the ones on the instrument cluster and switchgear could have been better. Overall fit-finish levels are good though, and paint finish and sheen are really good. The seat is longer now, making it more accommodating, but it could have been slightly softer to make the bike more comfortable on longer rides. On commutes, its lighter kerb weight and more power along with tried and tested parts mean the Unicorn 160 feels effortless. The front end is light yet sure-footed, and allows quick directional changes. The suspension and brakes are the same as before, making for confident handling, though the MRF Zappers could have been softer to offer better grip. Not that they don’t offer confidence, but they tend to start squealing under hard braking. It is supposed to be a light, zippy commuter machine, and the Unicorn 160 does well on that front. The Unicorn does a great job of being an able motorcycle for city riding, and doesn’t give you cause to complain at all about its performance or handling, but it isn’t huge fun to ride, especially with the commuteroriented riding position.

Arranged

Love

Love or

Arranged?

What is your choice? Inter caste

These are changing times for India and young women want to break free from the traditional forms of match-making. Are parents supportive?

RAHUL RAUT

I was treated like an object in a showroom and whether I was worth buying.

By Ishani Bose and Yash Daiv

W

illiam Shakespeare wrote, “For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.” The star-struck lovers, torn asunder by feuding family and societal norms, have been a symbol of love over all the intervening centuries. And not much has changed, it seems, since Shakespeare’s times and now. Love is still just as splendoured a thing as it was then, but the enemies of love have not been eliminated or reduced. In fact, in the 21st century, besides, caste, community, faith, religion, social status,

geographical location and profession, there are other countless hurdles and obstacles, taboos and torments to be overcome before a girl and boy, or man and woman may walk hand in hand into the sunset, to live happily ever after. Take the case of 27-year-old Anushree Hegde of Pune. Anushree and her boyfriend’s story is a lot like Two States, the Hindi fi lm based on Chetan Bhagat’s popular novel. Anushree said, "The story was more or less the same. In Two States, the boy is a Punjabi and the girl is South Indian. We thought that if we followed the script, we would be married after a few months of disapproval. Little did we know that the real story begins

after the parents meet." But the couple's parents treated Anushree and her boyfriend like theirs was an arranged marriage. "I was made to dress up and sit among 13 people, while my in-laws to be questioned me about cooking, balancing work and household duties, and so on. I was asked for a valid reason why I want to marry him (my boyfriend)," she said. About the humiliation, Anushree said, "I was treated like an object in a showroom and whether I was worth buying. As if this was not enough, my mother-in-law to be demanded that the wedding expenses be borne by my family. She would select the venue, menu and dresses and we

Prachi Jadhav looks at intellectual compatibility in a relationship. "They say opposites attract but in reality people are on a look out for someone who is a lot like them. were supposed to foot all the bills, including a reception guest list of over 2000 people." Anushree and her boyfriend had decided on a court marriage followed by a small reception. But their parents’ reaction was what would people think and that we have to live up to our status. "Somewhere down the line, both of us completely lost faith in the idea of marriage. Things got worse as egos clashed and demands increased. I had always thought that marriage is about two people and what they want. But it turns out that people who do not even know you have a say in the matter. A long lost relative will come up with 100 reasons on how the girl is not fair and how it will affect the generation to come. Sadly, issues like a working girl will cause fights and trouble the mother-in-law. As of now, we are letting our parents bicker and fight, while we may just elope," Anushree said. Twenty-three-year-old Siya Badave and 31-year-old Mukesh Badave (name changed) were married in January, after a six-year courtship. Siya’s family thought Mukesh was too old for her and also disapproved of his family background. “They looked down on him because his father remarried after his mother passed away,” said Siya. Siya’s family used her education and career as excuses. “They told us to wait three more years, until I turned 25. We were told

to think about our difference in age. But having been together for six years, we understood each other’s mental space,” said Siya. Siya’s family worried about her being tied down with household chores after marriage and that her career would take a backseat. Siya completed her MA in English Literature from Brighton, UK last year. She has to pay back on the loan taken for the study abroad. “I understood my parents’ concern, but I also realised that Mukesh was under pressure from his own family” she said. Eventually, the couple got married in a private ceremony. Twenty-nine-year-old Urvashi Rao (name changed) doesn't want to think of marriage because of the societal pressure it brings along. "Marriage is nothing but a legal contract that allows two people to cohabitate, which is acceptable by society. However, the irony of the situation is that, after marriage, for half of one's life one goes to work and the other half is spent in attending family functions, rituals, festivals, leaving no time for one another," Said Urvashi, who was rejected by her prospective mother-in-law for being 'too independent.' "Women are capable of handling everything. If some day I come across a guy (which can be through arranged or love marriage), whose family believes in it and gives me the space to work and

History plays testimony to the fact that women have been subjected to age old societal dogmas, especially when it comes to marriage. In the earlier days, the boy and his family used to go to the girl's house and judge her on the basis of her abilities—whether it was the way she looked, or the way she cooked, stitched, conducted herself before family members and the like. This is nothing but the patriarchal impact on the society which is prevalent since 500 years or more. And this impact is not easy to wash away. Even today, with changing times, it is the women who are judged, or examined before they are proven as the ideal Indian wife material. In this entire process, it is the parents who have to condition their minds, that if they have educated their daughter, she must be given the independence and freedom to stand up for herself, and not be subjected to these societal norms. They must, in fact, support their daughters to stand up for what they believe and not give into socie-

handle things at home, without pressurising me, marriage will definitely be an option," Urvashi said. Prachi Jadhav looks at intellectual compatibility in a relationship. "They say opposites attract but in reality people are on a look out for someone who is a lot like them. I would want my parents' opinion to be considered while I make this decision," says Prachi. The 23-year-old has a BA in Economics from Xavier’s Institute, Mumbai and has been to the parliament for a prestigious fellowship programme. She is currently studying law externally from National Law Institute of India University, Bengaluru. She stays in Baner with her brother and sister-in-law. She believes, "Marriage as an institution has evolved and the traditional approach does not appeal the youth anymore. It's important to know the other person before making the commitment. And my family shares my belief." Matrimonial websites have completely changed the way couples meet. Twenty eight-year-old Purva Joshi, a Kothrud resident, is put off by matrimonial sites and the questions they ask during registration. Being a Maharashtrian Brahmin, her parents made her register at the Anuroop Wiwaha Sanstha. The questions were materialistic and humiliating, Purva recalls. "Questions like, which phone do you use, what kind of a car do you have, I felt were completely uncalled for. These are just materialistic questions. Are these the only criteria on the basis of which you choose your life partner? " she asks. However marriage bureaux have a more sensitive approach. Nandini Dange of Harmony Marriage Bureau, Shivajinagar is extra cautious about any gender bias during the matchmaking process. "I am dealing with a sensitive issue and have to be extremely careful with what I am getting into. I handle all the clients myself and know each of them by name and face," says Dange. Her clients come from across the country and the globe. "I don't have a criteria or bar. the only question I ask is if they want dowry. I do not deal with people who want dowry," she said. ishani.bose@goldensparrow.com yashdaiv@gmail.com

tal pressures. Things have definitely improved from what they were once upon a time but only on a superficial level. Even today, in the Maharashtrian culture, we have a ritual called, 'Kande pohe karyakram', where the

Parents must support their daughters to stand up for what they believe and not give into societal pressures potential groom and his family come to the girl's house, in order to see her. Just a few hours of meeting is not enough to judge whether the other is an ideal life partner. The two must, in fact meet each other several times after that and then be given the space, time and independence to

decide whether they want to spend the rest of their lives with each other. And, mind you, both should enjoy equal rights in rejecting or accepting the other. Usually it is the man and his family who has the final say. Men have this wrong notion that if women are given the independence and freedom to do what they want, or an equal status in marriage, they will lose their importance. They fail to understand that if women are treated equally and if their opinions are valued and taken into consideration, it will only enrich their relationship. Already, today most independent women, who are job oriented, feel that they will not get an equal status or enough space and independence after marriage and hence have decided to stay single. There is a level of cynicism that has set in. If every one starts changing the way they think on an individual level, they will be able to transform the society's patriarchal bent of mind. There is still a long way to go in bringing about the transformation, but if we begin now, things will surely change for the better.
