‘The idea was not to act like Tilak, but to be the man he was’

Subodh Bhave elaborates on the challenges of playing the larger-than-life Lokmanya Tilak in a new film that’s ready to hit the screens

By Prachi Bari @prachibari

S

ubodh Bhave is incredibly thrilled and almost in a state of disbelief. He is to portray Lokmanya Tilak in director Om Raut’s film, Lokmanya - Ek Yugpurush. It took Raut a lot to convince Bhave before the latter agreed to do the role of the great man. “I was hesitant and I took more than a year to decide about playing Lokmanya. I met Om, sat through the screenplay narration and a detailed research of the character. I remember only sketchy details about Lokmanya Tilak in our school textbooks. As a schoolboy it never entered my mind that one day I would be portraying Lokmanya,” Bhave said. The concept of making a film on Tilak emerged after the completion of the film Balgandharva. The aim is For the to bring the larger-thancountry life persona of Tilak to the masses. It involved three years of intense research into Lokmanya Tilak’s life and times. “I love history and I think I have a deep and instinctive connection to historical figures like Tilak. I was born in the wrong era. If I had lived in Tilak’s era, I would have been involved with his historical and nation-building endeavours,” Bhave said.

“Initially, I couldn’t see myself as Lokmanya, but Om reassured me and I started preparing for the role. Lokmanya dropped out of college to take up wrestling. As a young man, Tilak was well built and strong. I joined Parulekar gym in Mumbai where I built up my physique to the required standard. But my preparation was also of the mental, inner aspect. No one had seen me take on the Lokmanya character, in full

So on the first day of the film shoot in May 2013, not only was every one taken aback but I even surprised myself. Of course, a big share of the credit goes to make-up artist genius Vikram Gaikwad, for my transformation into the character and presence of Lokmanya Tilak on screen. “I believe Tilak focused on building up his physique so that he could withstand and endure the hardships at the Mandalay Jail. He was preparing for what the future

held in store, all the hardships in the fight for freedom against the British,” Bhave said. “It put to the ultimate test my skill as an actor. The idea was not to act like Tilak, but to be the man he was. I believe in finding the soul of the character. I imbibed the essence of Tilak’s character from every statue, every photograph I could lay hands on. There is a romanticism, patriotism and fire in Tilak’s eyes. I scrutinised his face and eyes endlessly so that I would be able to convey the same expression and essence. “The scene where Tilak makes his milestone statement about freedom being his birthright, is at the core of the film, and was a most difficult one to accomplish. I had to convey the anguish Tilak was experiencing under the yoke of British rule. “Another intensely emotional scene is when Tilak’s son dies of the plague. He is writing the editorial for Kesari, and only after completing it, does he attend to the last rites of his son. That shows his strength and stoic nature. “Lokmanya’s positivity and aggression helped to alter the attitude of Indians in the freedom struggle. This youth of India will do well to recall and imbibe the values that Lokmanya Tilak lived by,” said Bhave. prachibari@gmail.com

Watch it for Robin Williams only Film: Cast: Ben Stiller, Rami Malek, Ben Kingsley, Robin Williams, Rebel Wilson, Owen Wilson, Patrick Gallagher, Steve Coogan, Ricky Gervais, Dick Van Dyke, Dan Stevens Director: Shawn Levy

ith Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb as the last Hollywood film to be released in 2014, the year ends with a whimper. The third film of the series, where the exhibits in a museum come alive during the night, is touted to be a comedy. Unfortunately, it is actually an uninspiring, dramatic, family

pot-boiler where unlike its previous editions it tablet which was found in Ahkmenrah’s tomb lacks the lustre of a wholesome entertainer. with the malfunctioning of the exhibits. The film begins after a long prologue set He learns that the solution to this lies with in the deserts of Egypt in 1938, where an Pharaoh Merenkahre, who is an exhibit at the archaeologist who is searching for the tomb British Museum in London. So he travels all of Ahkmenrah, accidentally finds it and is the way there to learn the secret of the tomb. warned, “If any one disturbs this tomb the end Layered with parenting issues, where will come.” To which the archaeologist Larry a single parent is worried about his replies, “We are not making a mistake, son Nick’s college plans, this fantasywe are making history.” based adventure tale is superficially TGS Rating This sets expectations rolling constructed and hence there is no and the narration shifts gear to depth to the narration. ooo`2 the American Museum of Natural Also with dialogues like, “Let History in New York where night no man stand between you and your watchman Larry Daley is all geared up destiny”, “the young boy needs to slay to put up a great sound and lights benefit his dragons,” the dramatic junctures seem show. But alas things don’t go as planned and forced and pretentious. he soon correlates the corroding of a mystical Similarly the gags are staid, half-hearted

and at the most draw only a chuckle. With most of the characters being exhibits at the museum, their character graphs are bland and one dimensional with no scope for performance. Ben Stiller plays a double role which is distinct and cleverly plotted. Stiller as Larry, the night watchman and a single parent bringing up his son Nick, is jaded but he breathes life into the amusing Neanderthal exhibit “Laa.” Dan Stevens shines as the delusional Lancelot who is in search of Guinevere. Similarly, Rami Malek as Ahkmenrah, Steve Coogan and Owen Wilson as the miniature versions of the Roman leader Octavius and the cowboy Jedediah along with Rebel Wilson as Tilly, the night guard at the British Museum, have their moments of glory. This being the last meaningful role of Robin Williams as the exhibit Teddy Roosevelt, there are a few touching moments. But it is his energetic voice as Garuda that enthralls you for a split second. On the other hand, Ben Kingsley as Pharoah Merenkahre is wasted. With good lighting, excellent production values and computer generated images, the film is visually appealing but overall Director Shawn Levy’s lethargic efforts ensure that the soothsayer’s prediction, “the end will come” rings true in this series of ‘Night at the Museum’. All guns blazing important piece, a heavy piece to be precise, after the king. In the film, Chitti is next in hierarchy after Jothi. in singing duets with Hansika. But there’s one intimate number as part of a figment of Usha’s imagination. The action is realistic; especially the preinterval scene. But Meaghamann is more brain than brawn. In a standout scene, when Arya’s operation is called off by the police department and he’s wanted for the killing of over a dozen people, it’s quite natural to think it’s all over or expect the story to follow the path of a regular hero-centric action film. What follows is the exact opposite and that’s where I think the director proves he doesn’t like to follow the herd. Magilzh impresses in similar fashion at regular intervals and almost lets us down in the climax, at least to an extent. But there couldn’t have been a better climax. Magilzh’s narrative style isn’t the best,

considering how many times he goes back and forth to reveal crucial moments in the story. Although he does it convincingly, it isn’t easy to appreciate the screenplay without pointing out a few flaws. It’s a fresh approach and it’s perfectly alright to not appreciate if one doesn’t like it but he can’t be discouraged. It’s such a relief to see Arya in a serious role after a slew of comic characters in recent times. He plays his part subtly without trying to be an action hero for once. Rana and Sudhanshu Pandey are decent in their respective roles, and the best part is that they don’t speak Tamil in some fake accent even though the film is set in Mumbai and Goa. Meaghamann is an almost satisfying action film going by Tamil cinema standards. IANS

* Be honest with yourself about the body you want: Have a real conversation about where you’re at with your health. You need to find exercises with some sort of strategy behind them, a strategy for how you want your body to look and perform. * Exercise five to seven days a week: If you don’t work

out one day, you’re going to stay the same or gain weight. We need to get used to taking care of our bodies. We spend five minutes a day brushing our teeth, and teeth are tiny in comparison to the rest of our bodies. So if teeth take up five minutes of your day, the rest of your body can take up 30 to 60 minutes. * Diet and exercise go hand in hand: If you have weight to lose, you have to train yourself to be good at exercise. And diet is definitely important, but it’s not about calorie restriction. Avoid processed foods, and include foods that as are as close to nature as possible, as well as greens and superfoods like mulberries. * Create a good playlist: Working out to music is something that people need to do. —IANS

TOD rating ;;;76

T

he Bolt is the all-new hatchback that replaces the Indica and Tata is betting big on the new car, trying to offer young buyers a likeable, comfortable yet sporty hatchback. It is all-new but does share a few visual similarities with the Indica. Many would have expected Tata Motors to get rid of the Indica’s design cues entirely and start afresh, but they felt some similarities were necessary. That’s why the ‘humanity line’ (the lines above and below the engine grille that merge into the headlights) reminds of the Indica’s grille, and so does the curved design of the glass area on the sides. The allblack interiors look better and in sync with current trends too, a welcome change from the Indica’s drab interiors. Taking centre stage is a touchscreen display for the Harman sourced infotainment

The Bolt is a sincere effort from Tata Motors to veer away from the Indica system (yes, the same Harman that makes high-end music systems!), complete with navigation support for Android smart phones and video playback. Quality of plastics and fit-finish are a lot better, while surfaces are nice to the touch with a more premium feel. The steering wheel is new as well, and feels nice to hold. The seats are comfortable, and the Bolt is spacious, offering great legroom and kneeroom at front and rear passengers both, just like the Indica. The boot is fairly large, offering 210 litres of space.

Space aside, the Bolt’s plush ride quality is truly noteworthy. Over broken roads, the Bolt was perfectly at ease, taking the torture without passing it onto occupants; it also maintains its composure well at speeds. Powering the Bolt is the 1.2-litre Revotron turbocharged petrol engine that debuted on the Zest first. With 89bhp and 140Nm of torque the Revotron’s outputs are on par with competitors like the Maruti Swift and Hyundai Grand i10. Like the Zest, the Bolt gets three drive modes, City, Eco and Sport, and you can switch modes at the press of a button on the dash. There’s a noticeable thrust when you switch from City or Eco to Sport and acceleration is brisk as you would expect from a modern engine. The engine felt smooth and refined throughout, and was unstressed even while cruising at speeds on

the highway. Gear ratios are adequate, and shift quality is decent too but the transmission isn’t as slick as the Volkswagen Polo’s or the Swift’s. On the handling front, the Bolt is a huge improvement over the Indica. That said, some amount of pitching and wallowing is present and the tyres could certainly offer some more grip. But understandably, these are tradeoffs in the interest of better fuel efficiency and comfort. The Bolt overall is a sincere effort from Tata Motors to veer away from the Indica and is part of their ‘Horizonext’ program to portray itself as a youthful, smart brand. There’s lot of positivity in the car but there’s still some ground to cover if Tata Motors wants to better the competition. abhay@evo.in Above: Spruced up interiors mean the Bolt feels a lot more modern on the inside. Left: 1.2-litre Revotron engine feels sluggish at low revs but is peppy once the turbo spools. Below: Curved glass area reminds of the Indica, but blacked-out C-pillar lends a contemporary look

THRILL OF DRIVING

Kawasaki’s ER-6n is the latest in the middleweight segment. Abhay Verma swings a leg over to tell you whether you should consider it or not

PHOTOGRAPHy: Gaurav S Thombre

here has been a growing demand for multi-cylinder, middleweight motorcycles of late, especially with a lot of motorcyclists in the country outgrowing their 250cc machines. These motorcyclists want bikes that are powerful and fun to ride, but practical enough to be ridden every day. The good news is that manufacturers are paying heed. Until not very long ago there were barely any options in the middleweight segment though, and the 1000cc machines on offer were not only frighteningly expensive but scarily powerful too, apart from being impractical. Interestingly, a host of motorcycles are on sale in the 600-800cc category today in our country, and most if not all are practical enough to be ridden daily to work while being fun to ride and comfortable too. The latest entrant in the segment is Kawasaki’s ER-6n. The bike is essentially a naked Ninja 650, with barely any mechanical differences between the two. The ER-6n is similar to the Ninja 650 visually from all sides except the front, the only differentiator being the lack of a fairing on the naked. But admittedly, while the Ninja 650’s front looks nice and sporty,

the ER-6n’s headlamp design isn’t very pretty. Look beyond that quirky headlight and you get a great everyday motorcycle that boasts of good performance and handling, typical Japanese build quality, reliability and everyday comfort. Having spent a weekend riding the ER-6n in and around Pune I can safely tell that this is a great motorcycle for daily use – practical enough to be ridden in traffic, and perfectly at ease cruising on highways too. It uses the same chassis and cycle parts meaning its handling is as sweet as the Ninja 650. Importantly, at Rs 5.29 lakh on-road in Pune the Er-6n costs almost Rs 40,000 less than the Ninja 650 which costs Rs 5.67 lakh on-road. Many found the Ninja 650 to be rather uninteresting despite being a great allrounder though, and I was keen to see if the ER-6n feels the same. It is powered by the same liquid-cooled 649cc parallel-twin engine making 71.1bhp and 64Nm of torque, while weighing 204kg, 6kg less than the faired Ninja 650. Even then it does feel heavy for a middleweight naked, but acceleration is quick and the ER-6n can actually surprise you with its ability to gain speeds. The engine feels butter smooth, and a twin-cylinder engine format means there’s lots of torque everywhere. The ER-6n will accelerate to 100kmph in well under 5 seconds, and top speed is expected to be close to 200kmph. However, lack of a fairing means sustaining speeds for long isn’t quite enjoyable. That said I enjoyed riding the ER-6n through city traffic. It felt a tad heavy at slow speeds but once you pick up pace it feels enjoyable. The engine tends to heat up in traffic, and there were times when I

The ER-6n boasts of great build quality and friendly performance in a very practical package could feel the heat on my legs, but it never got unbearable. Ride quality is pliant if not super-absorbent, and the ER-6n offers a good balance between ride and handling. The brakes work well too, offering a sure footed feel but lack of ABS even as an option is a bit surprising. The pillion seat is perfectly usable and comfortable unlike several big bikes, which means riding two-up isn’t a problem. What’s more, the instrumentation offers a lot of information including distance to empty and fuel efficiency apart from a large fuel gauge and two tripmeters, which is nice to have on a motorcycle you ride every day. In a nutshell, the ER-6n is a great everyday machine at a very inviting price. It boasts of great build quality and friendly performance in a very practical package. It is a motorcycle you could ride to office everyday and have fun on a ride to Lavasa with friends too, if you do not mind the slightly quirky looks, and Kawasaki India is only selling the bike in black colour. But there’s no doubting that the ER-6n is a lot of motorcycle at a very reasonable price point, one that can spice up your daily commute effortlessly. abhay@evo.in

New Year Resolutions & how to keep them Anjali Shetty lists the top 10 resolutions for 2015 & dispenses tips on abiding by them

By Anjali Shetty

"The smaller duration resolutions help you build inner strength." -Narendra

@shetty_anjali

W

e all do it at the end of one year and with the beginning of another, make resolutions, turn over a new leaf. Of course, how many persist with it beyond January 1, is another matter. Any way, it is fun, doesn’t cost a dime, and who knows, some good may transpire from the turn-of-the-year resolutions, whether it’s to do with following a healthconscious diet, time management, curbing unnecessary expenditure, or seeking peace of mind. TGS Life spoke to celebritiess and life coaches, on making new year resolutions, and asked them for tips on how to abide by them.

How to decide on New Year resolutions:

Nancy Katyal

Narendra Goidani

Goidani advocates weekly, monthly and annual resolutions. "These three kinds ensure fun without pressure. The smaller duration resolutions help you build inner strength to live up to your longer resolutions." Founder of Lead Image Consultant and soft skills coach Nancy Katyal says. "Belief is the very first essential. Say to yourself that it is my choice, my life. You cannot do something based on someone else’s preaching or assurance that it will reward you. Those resolutions may last for some time, but soon you will be looking for excuses to break them. If the passion of keeping a resolution doesn't consume you, it’s not a good resolution."

How to stick to New Year resolutions:

New Year resolutions should be rewarding. Mark the milestones in your resolution with celebrations. Goidani says, “If I resolve to lose 10 kg of weight, I will celebrate the loss of every kg. Not only fitness, but the celebrations inspire me to stick to my resolve. Surround yourself with friends and family, who are as excited as you are with your success. The Sanskrit word ‘mudita’ means the joy I feel when others are successful. Have people around you who feel mudita with your success.” Katyal says, "Be reasonable and be clear in what you

Inner strength

Life School CEO Narendra Goidani says, "Keep these factors in mind as you decide your resolution; visualise that you are feeling proud of yourself on December 31, 2015. What will make you feel that way? What do you have to drop or take up, to make you feel that way? What must you achieve to make you feel that way? So make your resolutions keeping all this in mind."

How to do it

No regrets:

A

Make resolutions that make use of your strengths. If discipline is your strength, make resolutions that are based on discipline. Thus, you will be able to stick to your resolutions. If you make resolutions that will bring out your weakness, there are chances of failure. The more we live life out of strengths, the higher are the chances of success.

B

Lyricist and songwriter Prashant Ingole: People who make resolutions think a lot about life. I live life, so I never make resolutions. I go with the flow, as I am love the journey of life.

‘I was lucky to discover Vonnegut’ Saaz Agarwal picks five of her favourite books By Ritu Goyal Harish

@ritugh ity-based author, painter and publisher Saaz Aggarwal discussed her top five books of all time with The Golden Sparrow on Saturday. “These books are from different phases of my life. They are my favourites primarily because they are so enjoyable. Looking at these frail, dog-eared and beautifullywritten books all together now, I also realise that they influenced my worldview, my writing style, and my understanding of Books human nature. They I Love helped me become who I am,” said Aggarwal.

C

1. Love of Seven Dolls by Paul Gallico “In this story, a complex and rather depraved character expresses his higher self through his puppets.

I read this book in college and, besides enjoying the interesting and very sweet story, I also learnt quite a lot about human nature.” 2. Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut “I was lucky to discover Vonnegut also in college. I’ve loved all his books, and was a great fan of the way he writes and the way he thinks, showcasing the transience of reality, and the sheer ridiculousness of most human activity and aspirations.” 3. The Road Less Travelled by M Scott Peck “Th is is a self-help book which conveys concepts which I feel no young person in today’s world can consider themselves educated without knowing!” 4 The Beaver Book of Funny Verse chosen by Raymond Wilson “Th is is a collection of some of

the best comic verse in the English language. But it has a value beyond humour because it showcases different writing styles and inspires a love for language.” 5. Tales of the Saints of Pandharpur by CA Kincaid “Th is book was a gift from my grandmother when I was little, and I have treasured it for more than forty years. She used to also tell me the stories of Dnyaneshwar, Namdev and the others, and I found them fascinating. In later life I realised what I had absorbed from these engaging tales, about plain thinking, the value of prayer and piety, and the equality of human beings.” ritugoyalharish@gmail.com

Protecting Jarawa tribes without compromising Title: The Last Wave An Island Novel By: Pankaj Sekhsaria

By Jaya Nair @TGSWeekly

T

he Last Wave- An Island Novel by Pankaj Sekhsaria — is a wonderful, engrossing story set in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The objective of the author to draw attention to the perils of deforestation and the invasion of the islands by settlers is very clear from the word go. As it weaves in facts, history and fiction, it gives an insight into the early days of the settlers in what was no more than forest land, where people of all regions and religions co-existed and did well for themselves, some better than others. A critical aspect of building new settlements is the rather enduring and extensive labour required to survive, let alone to succeed. Stories of how land

was cleared for building towns highlight the islands, Seema’s need to document the the delicate balance in ecosystem that is history of the early settlers, Uncle Pame’s endangered by the demands of a growing knowledge of land, David’s interest in the population and greed of politicians. The crocodiles and the illegal fishing, poaching, Bengalis, the Ranchis, Tamil refugees, the logging all weave an interesting story in Burmese, the corrupt politicians, policemen the backdrop of a beautiful island, and its and the Western photojournalists, all play a disappearing fauna and changing flora, an role in the wanton exploitation of the tropical indication of the impact of deforestation and rain forest. encroachment. The story calls attention to the At the centre of the story callous exploitation of the Jarawas who were are: Harish, a confused soul the original inhabitants along with the Onge who seeks both solitude and and answers for some of Andamanese and the Sentinelese his painful personal who existed in an insulated world in experiences, and harmony with nature for over 20,000 Seema who is years. Seema’s outburst against the Book a ‘local born’ ‘slimy middle class male tourist review researcher and (Jarawa Tourism) intent on taking descendant pictures of naked Jarawa women, of the inmates the naïve junglees who are easily of the infamous won over by paan masala and tobacco, Cellular Jail, who’s simple minded villagers and manipulative short lived romance officials are some of the everyday characters leaves her feeling angry in the story that is both informative and and humiliated, we introspective. The coming of the Andaman also have Uncle Pame, Trunk Road that cuts across their land spells a ‘Karen’ boatman of doom for this tribal community. The story Burmese origin and ends with the giant tsunami of December the Jarawa tribes. Harish and Seema 2004 that ravaged the island and altered the are both idealists, Harish’s fascination with lives of its inhabitants. The Jarawas are forced

to step outside the reserves to seek help to survive the tsunami and the multiple diseases that surface as a result of their interactions with the settlers, interactions that can annihilate their lot, quite like the tsunami that ravaged the islands less than a decade ago. As they attempt to make sense of the new world descending upon them with unprecedented speed, changes in their behaviour and toned down aggression could only mean the end of a civilisation as it existed. Protecting the Jarawa tribes without compromising on the overall development of the island is not unlike the dilemma we face in several other parts of the world. The amount of research that went into the writing of this novel and Pankaj’s love for the islands with its turquoise waters, the white sand beaches and tropical lushness become abundantly clear. The author’s deep understanding of the indigenous communities, held my interest to the final page. Though I have never been to the Andaman Islands I could visualise the areas on the island being described. I have always wanted to visit Andaman & Nicobar Islands after reading the book the Andaman Islands move several notches up on the list of places I must visit. tgs.feedback@goldensparrow.com
