une’s fashion scene has a new entrant. Actor turned designer Amrita Puri is all set to showcase her works in the city. For someone who enjoys films and theatre, launching a fashion line was an obvious, yet gradual, decision. “I love travelling and fabrics. My mother Anita and I have been sourcing fabrics and materials from local artisans over time. We noticed that we had collected a lot of fabrics and decided to have an exhibition

for friends and family. on This led to experimenting with designs and we started enjoying the process. It happened organically and in the start of this year we launched our label,” says Amrita, known for her critically acclaimed roles in films such as Aisha, Blood Money and Kai Po Che. She has also worked in plays such as Quasar Padamsee’s A View From The Stage’ and The Interview. Currently, she is a part of Rage production’s The Glass Menagerie. Amrita has always been cre-
atively inclined and finds it difficult to sit idle. “I have to keep busy and I just cannot sit doing nothing. My films got shelved this year and I am happy I found time to pursue this. There are days when I am stressed and bogged down with deadlines, but at the end of it all, I am enjoying the process,” she says. Years of grooming and being a part of the entertainment industry has helped Amrita gauge what works and what does not in the world of fashion. “Akuri includes a
T mix of Indian fabrics and contemporary designs. Exposure in the industry as to what works on an Indian body helped me form a design sense.” The collection features Indian motifs and fabrics in contemporary silhouettes. The designs have a global appeal with casual, hipster and formal looks. The range includes dresses, maxis, kaftaans, beachwear, kurtas, pallazos apart from other Indian wear. Amrita describes their style as comfortable, all-occasion wear with an ethnic twist. anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

Papon is passionate about creating contemporary folk music that has a mass appeal listen to my heart’s calling.

A
ngaraag Mahanta, popularly known as Papon, is a rock star in his own right. His songs are deeply rooted in the classical and folk music traditions of Assam. Papon has been greatly influenced by his parents, the late Khagen and Archana, in all aspects of his life and music. His parents being doyens of Assamese music, Papon trained in classical music with his mother’s guru Animesh Dutta. It was during his college days in Delhi that young Angaraag really began his musical odyssey. Since those formative years, he has evolved into the big league of music in India, and he has to his credit a number of albums in the Assamese language, besides making his mark as a singer in the Hindi fi lm industry. We caught up with Papon when he was in town recently. How did you decide to take up music as a profession? My parents were well-known

In that phase I gained confidence and the trust of people, who did not know my background, or how renowned as musicians my parents were. I also realised that I wanted to do music all my life. Is the popularity of your Hindi film songs making people listen to Assamese music? Yes, it is. Many want to get my old albums from Assam. In my shows, around 30 per cent of my songs are Assamese. I’m trying to popularise folk music by making it stylish. These day’s young people are listening to folk music because I’ve designed it in a new way. The times are changing, so you have to connect the old songs with the new generation.

indulge Increasing number of people are taking fancy to organic food By Sneha Krishnan @sne_krishnan
O
rganic agriculture is a production method that focusses on the use of renewable resources and energy and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality, which in turn, yields food products that are rich in nutritious content. Considering all the positive attributes of organic foods, such as they being good for health, rich in nutritious value, and being grown by means of earth-friendly, sustainable agricultural practices, they should be the universal choice. And if this were to happen, it would bring about a happy state of affairs for everyone, prosperity for the organic farmers, the consumers, and planet earth, whose environment will be preserved for the benefit of future generations. “Earlier, most stores in India sold only packaged, dry organic food products. Organic fresh produce like fruits and vegetables is still not readily available, because most retailers do not wish to undertake the risks involved in selling unpreserved products,” says Mus-

People blog about these Swati Maheshwari, co-founder products, read up on the Internet, of Rustic Art, an organic product and this way, even those in remote line, says, “Organic products reareas are gaining knowledge about quire a lower use of machinery for this,” says Maheshwari.
SOCIAL APPROACH Organic products are grown under a system of agriculture without the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, with an environmentally and socially responsible approach. This is a method of farming that works at the grassroot level, preserving the reproductive and regenerative capacity of the soil, good plant nutrition, and sound soil management, produces nutritious food rich in vitality which has resistance to diseases.
Stores that stock organic products Fabindia, Either Or, Dorabjees. Apart from these, there are retail websites that deliver organic products at your doorstep.
There are several misconceptions about organic products. “The concept is very simple. The pH level of eyes is close to 7 and the pH level of skin and hair is 4.5 to 6. We have to use products with the matching pH level to ensure that it is not harmful to us in anyway,” explains Maheshwari. “When the soap/shampoo of a different pH level comes in contact with the eyes, the eyes react and the baby feels the irritation. Many companies claim that their products are ‘zero irritation’ for the eyes, which essentially means that they add synthetic surfactants to mask the irritation. It is suggested that you use regular soaps and shampoos for your baby so that you know when the soap is getting into their eyes, and you must wash it out with water
if it does. Since distilled water has the same pH level as the eye i.e. 7, it will not cause any irritation to the baby,” Maheshwari said. The other big misconception about organic products is the term ‘soap-free’. Soaps are made out of authentic oils to cleanse your skin and leave it feeling healthy. But of late, most people are switching to soap-free products. There are more bathing bars and beauty bars available, which do not help your skin in any way. Today, there are organic and chemical-free products in every section of the local supermarket. From toiletries to food products, from candles and clothes, colours for Holi and idols of deities, everything is organically produced. snehakrishnan@hotmail.com

Khorisa, a new restaurant at Seasons Mall Magarpatta, serves traditional Assamese fare By Barnalee Handique @barnalee
K
horisa is the name of a recently opened restaurant at Seasons Mall at Magarpatta, which specialises in traditional Assamese cuisine. ‘Khorisa’ means raw, pickled or fermented bamboo shoots. Nilakshi Handique, who is the proprietor of Khorisa, said, “The first response to our restaurant was if we were going to serve momos and chowmein. But there is a lot more to Assamese cuisine, which in essence, is simple and wholesome. We use oil and spices sparingly. Khorisa is an important ingredient in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian Assamese preparations.” As expected the restaurant serves food prepared in the traditional Assamese style. Even the décor reflects traditional Assam, with its red walls, bamboo wallpaper, cane furniture, and Assamese artefacts and curios. And the background music features folk songs of Assam, and on the TV screen are the art and crafts of Assam. Coming to the menu, the snacks include popular varieties like narikolor laru (coconut balls), nimki (namkeen), pithas (rice flour rolls stuffed with sesame seeds or coconut), and varieties of tea. For starters, the Assamese people have khar, followed by a sour dish and dessert. The vegetarian menu offers masur dal, sak bhaji (leafy vegetables fried), Kon bilahi chutney (tomato chutney), khar (alkaline papaya), bengena bhaji (brinjal coated with gram flour and deep fried), labra (mixed vegetable fry), and more. The S factor Audi’s sportscar, the TT, comes of age, and will be here soon in its new avatar says Sirish Chandran Verdict
+ Styling, improved performance, space, comfort - Front-wheel drive, steering feedback still missing

e’re in Mallorca, the sunny isles where the likes of Easy Jet and Ryan Air spit out planeloads of Brits desperate for clear skies and a tan. It’s also a haven for cyclists, the roads snaking up the mountainside, on the right the cliffs kissing the ocean delivering a view so spectacular your breath is violently taken away. It’s one of the best driving roads, and I’d be hard pressed to recommend a better place to drive a car like the new Audi TT, particularly top down. Except the temperatures are nudging zero and the wipers are fighting… of all things… snow! Good thing the roof goes up even at 50kmph. Even better, we’re driving the quattro. Our day actually started off in the 310bhp TT RS, but half an hour later we found ourselves at the lunch stop, where somebody faster with a fork and knife swiped the keys from under our nose. We settle for the 2.0-litre 227bhp turbo-charged petrol with the S tronic 6-speed gearbox. First impressions: the TT looks rather fetching. Lined up against its predecessors it looks more evolution than revolution (almost the same length but with a longer wheelbase), but the original TT was such a path-breaking design to start with that I find it hard to find fault. The smooth curviness of the original has been replaced by sharp technical lines and intricate detailing in the optics that is very Vorsprung durch Technik. It’s on the inside that the technik-ness is even more prominent, the biggest party trick being the Virtual Cockpit. Gone are the speedo and tacho dials, replaced with a big high-resolution screen. And because it is now a screen, everything can be customised. So you can have your regular two-dial set-up
with the nav display in the centre, or you can have the navigation stretch from edge to edge (all of 12.3 inches), with small speedo and tacho dials. Looks brilliant – even makes the new S-Class’s two-screen business look so last year – though the passenger might feel a little disconnected as there’s no screen; nothing to fiddle around with. The turbo-petrol is a familiar motor and gets the TT to 100kmph in a quickish 5.6 seconds, and has a very strong bottom end to fire out of the numerous hairpins. There’s not enough to get the tail unstuck but that will never, ever be in the nature of the TT, after the original hit the headlines for an alarming propensity for lift-off oversteer (cured by the

Left: Cabin is gorgeous and Virtual Cockpit is the highlight of the new TT with a large 12.3-inch screen that can be customised to show conventional twin dials or a large navigation readout with smaller speedo and tachometer
lip spoiler on the bootlid). The engine I found most interesting from an Indian perspective is the 2.0-litre diesel in the Ultra Sport. It gets to 100kmph in 7.3 seconds and is mated to front-wheel-drive, but that’s hardly going to be a cause for concern as this will be the first diesel sports car in India. The TT gets Audi’s Drive Select to adjust dynamic behaviour and as with all Audis it works best with everything in Dynamic and the suspension in Comfort. The TT breathes over bumps, the slight increase in roll makes it feel more natural while barrelling into corners, and there’s more feedback along with impressive suspension compliance. So what do I make of the TT? I’ve always loved the shape and the new one gets rid of the feminine undertones with sharper, more technical detailing. The interior, particularly the cockpit, moves the goalposts on this score. And the option of a diesel engine could make it a game changer. Best of all there’s now genuine fun to be had in steering the TT. sirish@evo.in

ood news! You can finally tell the Jetta apart from the Vento; just count the number of chrome bars on the grille. The Jetta now has three, the Vento has two. And that’s how mild the update to the Jetta is. Apart from that grille, the graphics for the LED daytime lights in the headlamps are different, the bumper is new and the tail lamps now look very Audi. They say the boot lid and the rear bumper are new as well. Oh yes, there’s a new colour available and it’s called Blue Silk. The Jetta’s always been a handsome, understated car and the mild facelift only makes it more of the same. It may not have the extrovert design of some of its rivals, but there’s a certain timeless appeal to the car that we all like. We also like the smoked grey alloy wheels that come with the Highline. Step inside and you’ll see a new, flat bottomed steering wheel with paddleshifts (on the DSG automatic cars), enclosed dials for the speedo and rev counter and, wonder of wonders, a new airbag deactivation switch for the front passenger. All variants of the Jetta now get cruise control and there’s a ‘fatigue detection’ feature that studies your driving inputs and flashes a coffee mug symbol on the display between the dials if it

TGS team members hit the campus trail and sampled the fare at 30 canteens to get a taste of just what is on the platter for Pune’s college crowd when hunger strikes By Barnalee Handique @barnalee
C
anteen is a crucial nerve centre on a college campus. This is where bonds of friendship begin and strengthen, romances bloom, where important issues are discussed such as which girl has the prettiest eyes or longest legs, or which guy has the hottest wheels or trendiest wardrobe, what movie to watch and where, it’s the venue for intense debates, exchange of the juiciest gossip, besides the humdrum ‘timepass’ over endless cups of tea, coffee and assorted beverages, and the de rigeur calorie intake by way of wada-pav, samosa and other ever popular foods that are devoured in towering quantities by the ever famished collegian. The ambience of a college canteen is likely to be youthful and lively in keeping with the nature of the clientele, and there must
quite a high percentage of students who spend more time in the canteen than in the college lecture halls. But we were curious about the quality of food served in college canteens, and if not, what options did the college-goers have. Or is it true that a canteen is seen more as a rendezvous and the average collegian in not very concerned about the quality of food, and has even become immune to the lack of taste or quality?

Ranade Canteen
Nowrosjee Wadia College, Station Road Nowrosjee Wadia College campus was the first on our visit. The college canteen assignment had already whetted our appetites, so by the time we reached the Nowrosjee Wadia College canteen around lunch time, we were ready to get our fi ll. To our surprise, the place was less than crowded and on arriving at the counter, we were greeted by the sight of wada-pav, parathas, misal-pav and samosas. Hungry as we were, we quickly settled for samosa, misal-pav and ice-cream. As we sat at a table, we took in the ambience. We were in for quite an unpleasant surprise when our food arrived. The samosas were cold and so hard that we had to use some real muscle to crack them open and get at the fi lling, which to our distaste, turned out to be an unappetizing brown, concealed mass that tasted just as bad. We were enlightened by a Wadian, Sanjay Pal, who told us that the samosas are made from left over potatoes fried with peas and curry leaves. Even the misal looked less than inviting, being rather murky, like the engine oil of an unused car. We voiced our protest and the canteen waiter doused the missal with lemon juice and coriander. It didn’t improve the taste any and we munched on the leathery pav and downed it with swigs of water. After that culinary misadventure, we resorted to the safer option of biscuits and tea, to tide us over. The dishes cost Rs 20 to Rs 30. No surprise, Wadia college students are regulars at the string of food stalls along the road outside the college campus.
Indian Law Society (ILS), Law College Rd We didn’t think it would get any worse at the ILS canteen, but it did. In fact, we were at a loss to find the adjectives to describe the food here. Unpalatable would be the easiest way out, considering that most of the food seemed to be garnished with dead cockroaches. Imagine biting into a veggie samosa and tasting a non-veggie cockroach instead! We decided to try the stuffed parathas, idli and tea. The parathas cost Rs 40 each, and two idlis cost Rs 30. As law student Muckta K said, “We have no option but to come here to the canteen for a snack between classes. The food is unpalatable and over-priced.” The option is to spend more
Katta culture
time and go to the Subway, MacDonald’s and other eateries in the vicinity of ILS Law College. Our food smelled less than inviting and looked to be doused in oil. We decided to be brave and take the first bite. There irregular shaped stuffed paratha had hardly any stuffing and the a few stray green strandsof coriander. The best way to deal with the paratha was to splash it with large dollops of ketchup. The flying saucer shaped idlis were another tough proposition, and they should have provided a hammer and tongs along with it. How could they mess up one of the most popular udipi dishes so totally?. Drowned in tasteless sambar with a distant hint of spice, the idlis were like our dream tht had turned into a nightmare. And the tea had a taste of radiator fluid and formaldehyde.
Maharashtra Mitra Mandal’s College, Deccan The MMMC menu and the dishes they serve are like a puzzle that cannot be solved. Don’t get us wrong, because the menu cars has all the regular stuff like dosa, poha, sandwiches et al. The puzzling bit is that the poha and upma that we had ordered were nothing like any poha and upma we had ever tasted before. The upma was a greasy, gooey white mass that looked suspicious enough to prod with a spoon, let along put into your mouth. And the bread pakoda was like biting into flubber. The accompanying sauce seemed to be laced with battery acid. The formulas seems to be excess oil and spice to make up for their culinary lapses. No wonder the fried noodles were camouflaged with garam masala and oil. The roll tasted like dead fish and the chai was murky hot water without a hint of milk and sugar. The dishes cost between Rs 20 and Rs 40. Swapnil S said, “We get better food outside, but we come to the canteen because this is our meeting place after classes. The food is bad, but now we have become are immune to it.”
College of Engineering Pune, Shivajinagar After our previous experiences, the CoEP canteen was like a breath of fresh air. Clean and neat, the canteen has separate sections for students and teachers. There is also an open cafeteria with a view of the Mula-Mutha river. The canteen menu features the ever popular wada-pav, poha, misal, sandwiches, cullets and also a thali. The food is served at subsidized prices of Rs 15 to Rs 50. Mihir Ramaiya
ILS College
recommended the crisp cutlets stuffed with baby potatoes and peas and served with green chutney. The wadas garnished with coriander were delicious. This is a place that ensures clean and wholesome food with fresh ingredients. Ramaiya said, “Our schedule is hectic and we usually visit the canteen during recess. The food is great and the canteen staff keep changing the menu every week to keep it interesting.”
Ranade Institute, FC Road The Ranade Institute canteen is an idyllic place, situated under the welcome shade of a sprawling tree. It’s like a tapri. Rameshbhai has been running the canteen for the last 26 years. He said, “When I started the canteen, the institute had evening classes. Students and teachers used to sit here till late in the evenings. So I used to serve them my special masala tea, with cardamom, ginger and bay leaves. Then I added bread pakodas and poha to the menu.” The poha is garnished with peanuts, green peas and vegetables. Rameshbhai buys the vegetables and makes the ingredients himself. The poha and bread pakoda cost Rs 10 and Rs 15 respectively. The canteen opens at 7 am and has a continuous flow of customers. Shailesh Joshi said, “My friends and I visit the canteen many times in a day. Rameshbhai friendly nature and honesty makes the canteen a very popular place for everyone who comes here. He pays personal attention to every one and ensures that the food is satisfactory.”
Adarsh Canteen, Savitribai Phule Pune University The Adarsh canteen at the Savitribai Phule Pune University is located near the administration building and the Department of Communication. It is favourite meeting place for students and with the growing clientele, more seating has been added. It is always crowded, and with its delicious food and welcome atmosphere, students hang out here for hours on end. It’s probably the only canteen to serve chai for Rs 3 and wada-pav for Rs 6. They also serve a range of udipi south Indian favourites. The spicy misal-pav is a hot favourite among its customers. Kishore Hulke said, “The hot and spicy misalpav is a favourite among foreign students, though there are other less spicy options.” The canteen has recently introduced corn and cheese items like corn cutlets, corn samosas, cheese balls and Chinese dishes, priced from Rs 10 to Rs 30.

ith the spurt in technology, posting a selfie on social media will only grow and remain part of the global cultural landscape for years to come, says a report by New Jersey-based communications agency Coyne PR. The report examined the culture of selfies, including why people are interested in them, what purpose they serve and how people can use selfies to express themselves. “We wanted to explore not only how selfies are used today, but how they may be used in the future,” Daily Free Press reported Marie Baker of Coyne PR as saying. “People take selfies for the same reason they would take traditional photographs to capture memories,” said Baker.
There is a drastic difference between showing off a new haircut and then risking your life on the side of a mountain for the perfect shot. “Social media gives so many people a channel to express themselves for the good and the bad,” Baker added. Clicking Approximately 85 percent of survey responders said they post a selfie once spree a week on social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram. The survey found that 82 percent of responders take selfies because they want to show off something new, such as clothing or a hairstyle. Several students said they take selfies as a way to communicate with friends. IANS
