Sahil to play a village simpleton in his Marathi film debut Actor Sumeet Raghavan waited for 25 years to appear in a Marathi film. Sandook will have him play a simpleton in pre-independence India TGS NEWS SERVICE @TGSWeekly

hen you see Sumeet Raghavan, the fi rst thing that comes to minds is the character Sahil from Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai. The multifaceted actor, who was last seen in Akshay Kumar-starrer, Holiday, will make his debut in the Marathi fi lm industry with Sandook. Directed by Atul Kale, the fi lm is a period comedy set in the 1940s. What took him so long to take up a Marathi script? “There are a couple of factors that appealed to me. The fi rst is that the fi lm is directed by my childhood friend Atul Kale. We go back a good 30 years when we did theatre together as kids. The second aspect is that you rarely see an actor make a
debut in a period fi lm. Normally, he would want the fi lm to have item numbers, fight sequences and skin show. Honestly, I have reached a stage in my career where I have seen everything and none of it appeals to me. What really touched me was the script. Signing the dotted line was just a formality, I had already decided to be a part of the fi lm, in principle,” says Sumeet, who considers
the script and the team of prime importance while selecting a fi lm. The actor admits that he has been waiting for an appealing script to make his entry into Marathi cinema. “We don’t take things for granted. We were not born with a silver spoon. We were fortunate enough to have shelter, food and a good upbringing. Otherwise we are normal kids. Atul and I
have seen each other struggle. Th is fi lm is a dream project for everyone who is part of it. Atul has been carrying this dream around for 12 years. There are times when a huge jigsaw puzzle falls in place with the right pieces. We were each other’s co-ordinating pieces,” smiles Sumeet, who has his sasural in Pune. Sumeet plays Wamanrao Astheputra in Sandook and had to work on the dialect of the character. “We are talking about the 1940s when the language was different. Marathi has undergone a sea change over the years. Today, we converse in Whatsapp language and everyday a new term is coined. Writer Hrishekesh Joshi has maintained and brought out the fl avour of the language in a great way. For diction, I insisted that Hrishikesh read out the script fi rst and retained his tone in my head,” adds Sumeet. The past year has been a great ride for the actor and he is eagerly awaiting the release of Sandook. “I am taking back the simplicity of Wamanrao and his aspirations. He is innocent, sweet and does nothing extraordinary. He just happens to be in a place where he should, or shouldn’t be. I leave that upon the audience to decide.” anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

“All my friends think I get paid to drink”i Pune boy Omkar Kalaskar designs recipes for cocktails but that does not mean what his friends say is true. Instead, the mixologist trains bartenders on the nitty-gritty of putting drinks together

artending is an art. It is as much about mixing interesting drinks as it is about being a great host. Mixologist and trade ambassador for Bacardi India, Omkar Kalaskar believes people will forget who you are and what you tell them
but they will never forget how you made them a drink. Omkar’s job essentially involves designing recipes for cocktails with various spirits. He then trains bartenders from various star properties and standalones to make the drinks as well as serve them. While the job sounds deeply
interesting, it does come with its odds. For instance, being a mixologist has given Omkar’s friends all kinds of ideas. "All my friends think I get paid to drink and attend luxurious parties, which is not entirely true. I do attend a lot of parties but that is essentially to meet people from the trade as well as

consumers," he points out. Omkar, 31, recently took part in the Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition and was the only finalist from Pune. The competition provided a platform for bartenders to showcase their skills and interact with the best talent in the country. "I became a part of Bacardi because of the competition. When I came back from London after seven years and started working behind the bar, it was a new start all over again because I didn’t know people in the industry. Then I got to know about this competition through a friend. There are a lot of things that a contestant should keep in mind. We look for a drink that tastes good, is well-balanced, the texture of the drink, creativity and its story/ inspiration also matter a lot,” explains Omkar. According to the mixologist, the drink should be easy to make while having the capability to last the test of time. “The recipe should not have more than six ingredients.
All cocktails should use commonly available ingredients all over the world," says Omkar. Omkar believes the trick to making good drink involves simplicity. A basic rule he never veers from is that one should always remember it's not about drinking more but about drinking better. "When you organise a party at home and want to make some cocktails, keep this formula in mind 1 part of sour (lime/lemon/ passion fruit), 2 part of sweet (honey/ sugar/maple/vanilla), 3 parts of strong and 4 parts of weak (juice/ice/fruits). So, a 100 ml drink made using this formula would have 10ml sour, 20ml sweet, 30ml strong and, 40ml weak ingredients. You can also enhance the flavors by adding some fresh herbs and spices to the cocktail," Omkar elaborates. He adds that the presentation of a drink is as important as its taste, and don’t forget to garnish your drinks. anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

When collecting
A camera that was once used by Adolf Hitler, Sachin Tendulkar’s 50th test century willow, 175-year-old shield and armour and a century of Olympic lapel pins - these precious keepsakes have found a home right here in Pune. TGS Life meets five collectors whose unique love for objets d’art has taken them to remote corners of the world By Zainab Kantawala @kantawalazainab
I
t’s easy to be a hoarder. Over the years, numerous interesting tidbits land in our hands and find a place in some corner of the home. Then, one day, the cleanliness freak of the house yelps in frustration and the kabaadiwala is summoned to sweep away whatever corroded memory the objects hold. You ache, perhaps, until new bits and pieces arrive to stir your heart. Nevertheless, there are those amongst us for whom collecting and savouring an object is a matter of passion. It may not be something that has any practical usage when its numbers reach the thousands but its history, origins and design hold much significance for collectors. Numismatists and philatelists have been around for as long as there have been coins and stamps. However, for collectors, the possibilities are endless. A few ardent collectors in Pune are busy proving just that.

— Abhijit Dhotre
The mighty sword
Don’t just point and shoot This arts teachers at MIT English School is profoundly passionate about antique cameras, so much so that he spends days getting a particular camera for his collection. It, then, isn’t surprising to know that Abhijit Dhotre possesses nearly 450 cameras, all in working condition. Among his collection is a box camera he had acquired while he was still in school, a classic Kodak Brownie camera and the Rave Bello miniature camera. Abhijit also has two vintage body cameras, which might not seem like much of an achievement, until you realise that there are only seven body cameras in the entire world. “I don’t just add a camera to my collection, I also study its mechanism and history.
I even have a camera from World War 1 as well as a camera that was used by Adolf Hitler, apart from the world’s biggest collection of camera films rolls of all makes and brands,” he says, unable to hide a sense of pride. Abhijit’s interest in cameras began in 1997, when he studied antique cameras in the course of his diploma course in photography. “My first vintage camera was of an Italian make and it cost Rs 20. Ever since, I have travelled across the country, wherever there was a promise of getting my hands on a vintage camera,” he recalls. The cameras need to be operated regularly to make sure they stay alive. “Maintaining the cameras is a big task and all my holidays are spent servicing
each and every piece,” states Abhijit. He has now bought an apartment where he can keep his collection in proper order. The 33-year-old wants the future generation to take interest in the history of technology and how it has evolved over the years. “I want the youngsters to know about the evolution of cameras. While digital cameras make photography look easy, the youth must appreciate the kind of effort it took to create pictures earlier,” he says. Abhijit has organised a few exhibitions at Balgandharva Rangmandir wherein the cameras have been on display. He soon hopes to convert his new apartment on Sinhagad Road into a museum that will showcase his collection.
Yes, the pen is still mightier than the sword but when the weapon is aged a few centuries it does gain some might. Hemant Tirale’s collection of 350 swords dates back to the reign of the state’s most loved and revered ruler, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The 47-year-old’s assortment also includes daggers and its improvisation, which has a long, flexible and sharp blade. In the last 20 years, Hemant’s collection of weapons has increased and so has his knowledge about artillery usage in the Maratha Empire. The part-time theatre artist’s interest in weaponry was evoked when he started participating in plays related to Shivaji Maharaj, produced by Jantara Theatre. “Collecting the swords wasn’t easy. Once I travelled to Satara to meet a family that owned an old sword but they did not let me into their house because they didn’t think I had the money to buy it. I waited outside their house for six hours, enduring the insult only because I knew that if I could prove myself to them they would understand my passion. I was determined to get that historic sword. I have the oldest of swords and rarest of daggers,” Hemant says humbly. The
weapons do not belong to Hemant, but to Shivgarjana Mardani Akhada, an organisation he helped set up. Hemant was also able to source a 175-year-old set of shield and armour. “The armour is made out of iron and weighs nearly eight kilograms. It helped warriors protect themselves from the opponent’s attack. The shields, made of rhinoceros skin, weigh three kilograms each, barred the opponent’s attack. To me, these are invaluable,” he shares. It’s not easy for the small-time, home interior professional, who supplements his earnings by supplying dummy weapons for film shoots, to maintain such an expensive hobby. Nevertheless, his passion keeps him going. Having completed a conservation course from National Research Laboratory for Conservation of Cultural Property from Lucknow, Hemant is able to maintain the artefacts himself. “I did the course to understand how to save the swords from humidity and rust. I don’t allow anyone to touch them. I clean them every week, particularly in the monsoons when they can get corroded easily,” he says.

Pune’s own bat-man He does not wear a crime-fighting cloak. Yet Abhijit Chitnis does have a super power. He could make every cricket-lovers’ knees quiver if they chanced upon his distinctive collection of autographed cricket bats. Abhijit’s collection of cricket bats includes signatures by the who’s who of the international cricketing world, including the master blaster. The marketing professional, who works in the hospitality industry, has an autographed willow for nearly each day of the year. “I have always been a cricket fan and, thanks to my association with the hospitality industry, I was able to meet various cricketers during their stay at our hotel,” says Abhijit, recalling the beginning of his obsession. Abhijit got his first autographed
bat when the New Zealand team visited India in 2002. “It was only after I had 15-20 autographed bats that I began to give the hobby a serious thought,” he says. Abhijeet now has autographed bats from legends such as Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Brian Lara and Jacques Kallis among others. Along the way, rare photographs and merchandise have also crept into Abhijit’s collection yet he has never gotten his collection valued. In fact, it’s really hard not to be jealous of the Team India jersey that bears an autograph of every member of the 2011 World Cup winning team. That and a cricket bat signed by Sachin Tendulkar after scoring his 50th test century are among Abhijit’s prized possessions.
Father and son, Srinivas and Punit Bhat, are proud owners of nearly 450 lapel pins, representing different sporting events from around the world. These aren’t even half of their total collection that numbers 1,100 lapel pins. The rest of the collection includes memento pins
ranging from national flags to representations of travel hotspots. Over the last 20 years, through various means, Srinivas (75) and Punit (44) have got their hands on the 2014 FIFA World Cup pin and the official Cricket World Cup 2015 trophy pin, among others. They
are Limca Record Holders and between them share collections comprising of over 5,000 coins, 200 Ganesha idols in metal, 500 sealed miniature liquor bottles apart from the lapel pins. The pins, though, are what both Bhats are passionate about. “Lapel pins are a symbol of the times and you can learn a lot from them. There are very few serious lapel pin collectors in India because only a handful have access to such pins. It’s also a very expensive hobby. Often, I have to foot heavy courier charges for the lapel pins,” says Punit. The fascination for the pins started when Srinivas was travelling to the United States in 1995. He was looking for keepsakes to represent the places he’d visited but found that most options would be too cumbersome to carry back home or would get damaged during travel. Upon seeing a lapel pin depicting New York, Srinivas found it to be a far better souvenir. On his travels through European countries, the lapel pin obsession continued and now, he has several pins representing 22 countries and 15 places of interest. In 1996, Srinivas was in US again, just before the Atlanta Olympics. This time, he bought himself a rare set of Olympian pins from 1896-1996, firming up his interest in lapel pins.
Bag lady Some intellectuals collect coins, others prefer stamps, but for a fashionista, handbags hold all the magic. Nutan Kanegaonkar (27), a lecturer at Garware College, is owner of an ever-growing collection of bags. “My fascination with bags started around six years ago. I started collecting bags of all colours, shapes and sizes. I have between 90 to 100 bags that I have bought from different states in India,” she says. The variety of bags includes jute bags, handcrafted jholas, clutches, box bags and slings. “I have a bag for every occasion. Every day, when I go to work, I select a bag first and then team my clothes accordingly,” she says. Her most prized possession is a Louis Vuitton bag gifted by her mother. “I don’t usually care for brands. I pick up what I like. Most bags in my collection are ethnic, and have been bought from different places,” Nutan says.

Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale, Shanipar Before the grey clouds take over, head here for a mouthful of Amba Barfi and Bhakarwadi. The buying experience itself is quite something here. To start with, Chitale Bandhu’s stores across Pune will not adjust their timings for anyone. In fact, according to local lore, even Rajnikanth can’t get the store to stay open post 2 pm. Consider yourself lucky if you get the security to smile, once that is achieved the next hurdle is to get the staff to wait patiently until you decide on the goodies you want to take home. This is an essential trait to master because you certainly will be hurried to make your selection and move on to the next counter. And if, perchance, you don’t use both tabs handed out while billing you purchase, the security guard’s glare will surely melt you to jelly as you attempt to return an empty tab. Must-have: Bhakarwadi
Patron speak: Pinaki Chatterjee, security analyst I absolutely love the Bhakarwadi and Narali Barfi here. The billing system is quite cumbersome though. Also, the crowd sometimes gets unmanageable and you are pushed around towards the counters. The snacks are totally worth all the trouble.
staring dumbfounded at the ways of the establishment. There are certain unsaid rules that have been created over the years. Remember that the customer is expected to listen to the restaurant owner, not the other way round. There will be no kind words exchanged, not even a cursory nod, no matter how many
years you’ve been visiting the same joint. The owners believe that if the food they serve is good, they don’t need to waste their precious time being nice. If you need someone to make you feel special, go home to mommy or just suck it up and dig into scrumptious, never-off-the-mark, comfort food. anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com
Bedekar Misal, Narayan Peth From a tea stall, Bedekar Misal has morphed into an iconic eatery in the last 67 years. Considered to serve the most dhamakedar misal in town, this place has stuck to pretty much the same fare over the years and at an easy-on-the-pocket price of Rs 40. There is a perpetual rush here and table space is sacred so sharing a table with strangers is pretty
much the norm. While the food is yummy, Bedekar Misal finds a place on this list thanks to the cold stares from a rather impolite staff. They don’t expect any interaction with the customer whatsoever. You have to deposit an amount at the counter and the money will be adjusted as per your order. The waiter lifelessly serves you extra gravy when asked
for it. You can’t sit and chat loudly or spend time after you are done polishing off your plate. Move on and make space for other customers. Must-have: Misal
Patron speak: Sushil Taru, assistant manager, retail insurance The misal here is undoubtedly the best in the city. What I dislike is the seating arrangement. You don’t have the leisure to enjoy your meal as you end up sharing space with a lot of strangers.

Kayani Bakery, Camp The owners of the hugely popular bakery have, perhaps, deliberately created a small space to buy their goodies over the counter. They have their own rules and, for years, have been following them diligently. The bakery’s goodies are sold out before the day ends and they don’t bother to refill anything on the menu even if you beg or plead. The owners are happy doing limited business and that is why ‘take it or leave it’ is their go-to mantra. Despite all the worrisome attitude, that would drive away customers in most places, every morning sees a line outside the bakery waiting for it to open doors. Must-have: Shrewsberry biscuit

Kalyan Bhel, Law College Road Before you step in for a quick snack, ensure your phone is switched off, you are well-behaved and really hungry! Within the premises of the snacks joint you cannot talk loudly or make noise. The attendants ensure there is minimal sound. They
believe people should eat in peace. There are placards giving you instructions and it’s best to abide by them. After all, it’s only fair to expect a hungry crowd not to surround, even push, the guy at the counter. Must-have: SPDP
Burger, East Street Perhaps when the owners were recruiting staff at this cafe/restaurant, their main criteria was how arrogant a person could be. From the manager, right down to the waiter every person on the staff here is arrogant. They never smile. In fact, they act as though they are doing you a favour by feeding you. You’d be lucky to find a table and once you do, you should be luckier still to be allowed to sit here for long. Be sure to carry exact change or be ready to return empty-handed. The owner Shapoor Irani, however, is a great person but you rarely see him around the cafe. Must-have: King Burger Patron speak: Kedar Phalke, engineering student I am a regular here. I love the King Burger. The staff is uptight and rude. They behave like they are doing us a favour. If you wait for even a minute longer after your meal is done, be sure to experience their wrath. But, at the end of the day, their burgers are out of this world. So, who’s complaining?

Your Mahabharat tryst gets a graphic twist The digital video company Epified is working on making mythology fun for the internet generation TGS NEWS SERVICE @TGSWeekly
S
tarted with an ideology to revolutionise and create streamlined video content, Epified simplifies mythology and makes it more accessible to the present generation. The slate of content revolves largely around mythology and its many historical facets to craft a constant channel of information for the youth who seek to know more about India from its culturally rich heritage but do not like to touch the thick books that record it. Sameer Pitalwalla, CEO and cofounder of Culture Machine Digital Video Entertainment Company, says, “We wanted to create a mythology channel for the Internet generation. Most of the material we have right now is either too devotional or too actionadventure oriented. We wanted to bring a more common-sense alternative to this paradigm. Renowned mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik came on board as a guide and advisor and to direct the initiative.” Epified videos use whiteboard animation. This is
created by getting an artist to work on vector illustrations based on scripts and recreating the drawing process with the help of a software called VideoScribe. They sync the animation with a voice-over of the script that is done in-house. Sameer adds, “The feedback has been very encouraging. We have managed
to strike a chord with people of all ages and we have received messages of encouragement and support from Indians all over the world. Modern, tech savvy youth are curious to know more about Indian mythology and culture but don’t have the patience for thick books. We
For inspiration, I browse the internet. I was amazed by the works of Neo Rauch, a German artist, who does figurative art but there is something mysterious about his paintings,” states Prashant The artist, however, has been struggling even to draw a line while juggling his profession and hobby. He believes there are very few artists who manage to strike a balance. “I can’t survive being just an artist. I sell very few paintings because I don’t paint Buddha or Krishna. Tell me, how many artists abroad paint Jesus? I don’t believe in creating designs, I believe in creating art.” Drop in at Monalisa Kalagram, Koregaon Park to take a look at Prashant’s works; until June 3, 9.30 am to 5.30 pm anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com
are giving them what they need in easy doses.” There is much in mythology that is yet to mix within popular culture and Culture Machine intends to say those things. They are hoping to expand our boundaries from mythology to literature as well as topics of universal intrigue. The team tries to distil the epics into their simplest and most mainstream version. This is achieved by reading the books that are already out there — the many retellings of epics, the various interpretations of mythology. After they have the skeleton in place, the team explores aspects of the epics using spin-offs and short character/deity profiles. “We also adapt already-existing works like books and essays by Devdutt Pattanaik, whose work on mythology has brought an entire generation of Indians closer to their cultural heritage,” shares Sameer. The creation process involves coming up with an idea that needs to be expressed. Then researching it and scripting it out in the simplest possible manner. This happens because often, what is written for print does not translate well into a medium that Epified follows. As far as selecting stories is concerned, they try to stick to a healthy mix of what is already well-known and what is relatively unknown. feedback.tgs@goldensparrow.com

B King set the mood for the charitable evening organised at The Little Door, Kalyani Nagar. City-based band, Silver paid a tribute to the famous Blues singer, who passed away earlier this month. It was also an evening when the dogooders of the city came together to do their bit to help those struck by the two major earthquakes in Nepal. The evening easily turned enjoyable, although tinged with melancholy. Nevertheless, the style quotient in the room was quite high. From the band members to the audience, everyone in there had a major part of their heart dedicated to music and our best dressed girl and guy certainly seemed to enjoy every bit of the melodious evening. As Essa Duhamie took a seat alongwith her friends applauding every piece the band played, she simply owned the evening in the little monochrome striped dress. The professional belly dancer balanced her bubbly personality with a minimalistic dress and a matching pair of heels. A pair of danglers and a high pony tail with just a lip gloss completed her

Johnny Depp could face 10-year jail term over his dogs Actor Johnny Depp might face jail time for bringing his two dogs into Australia illegally. An Australian Senate committee said if the matter goes to court and the 51-year-old is found guilty, he could face up to 10 years in jail or a maximum fine of $265,000, reports people.com. Depp landed in hot water earlier this month after flying into Australia in a private jet with his Yorkshire Terriers — Pistol and Boo — breaking the country’s strict quarantine
laws. As per reports, an ongoing investigation found that Depp, his fellow passengers and the flight crew did not declare the dogs’ presence, and they were only discovered after the pups were taken to a local groomer and photos were posted on social media. Australian Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce then threatened to have the Yorkies euthanised unless they were flown out of the country within 50 hours. IANS
Ranveer missed Bhansali on ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ sets Every day was like a party on the sets of Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’, but by the end of it, actor Ranveer Singh craved for some Bhansali action. ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ is about a dysfunctional family’s cruise trip, and the entire film shoot was a sort of a picnic for the star cast. Ranveer is happy to have worked in Zoya’s style of cinema, which more of “slice of life” and entertaining, but it didn’t give him the opportunity “to scream, to sweat, to lose out voice and all” making him miss his ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela’ and ‘Bajirao Mastani’ director. “By the end of Zoya’s film, I was like ‘I need to go to Bhansali’ because acting in her (Zoya Akhtar) film is so casual and candid,” Ranveer said. “So it is a very candid and casual. During the shoot, I had jokingly said to PC (Priyanka Chopra) that ‘I can’t resist myself. I have to go to Bhansali. I want to shout out, do
action stuff, do aggressive scenes and cry”... and this is not in Zoya’s films,” Ranveer said. However, Ranveer is happy to work with the two directors “who are poles apart with different styles of acting and filmmaking”. IANS
Nicole Scherzinger adjusting to singledom Singer Nicole Scherzinger is going through “a very transformative time” in her life following her split from reigning Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton. The ‘Don’t hold your breath’ hitmaker, who split from Hamilton in February after seven years together, believes they will eventually reunite if they are truly meant to be together, but she is currently trying to focus on herself. “I think it’s hard. I think sometimes people stay in relationships because they get complacent, because it’s comfortable for them, because they don’t want to be alone. For me, what’s helped me to get through this is I’m quite a spiritual person. It has grounded me and I realise I do have a great purpose in life,” she said. Asked if she has any advice for getting through a breakup, she said, “Focus on yourself. Because a lot of the times when you’re in a relationship, you lose yourself and you lose who you are are, what makes you so special in your own light. “You are always putting the energy on someone else. Build yourself back up again. Do what you want to do.” The 36-year-old beauty’s heartbreak has inspired a lot of her new music. IANS
