Soha enjoyed shooting ‘Ghayal Once Again’
Actor Ashton Kutcher gave his mother Diane a surprise in honour of Mother’s Day by remodelling his childhood house in Iowa with his fiance Mila Kunis, calling the project a lifelong dream.
Actress Soha Ali Khan is excited about her upcoming action drama “Ghayal Once Again”, a sequel to 1990 hit film “Ghayal” and says that she is enjoying everything about the shoot.

irector and fi lm activist Jaypraad Desai’s fi lm Nagrik has bagged five awards at the recently held 52nd Maharashtra State Awards. The fi lm is a socio-political thriller/ drama starring Shreeram Lagoo, Sachin Khedekar, Neena Kulkarni and Milind Soman, among others. It is a commentary on the sociopolitical reality among us. The script, that took five years to develop, is now being appreciated for its content and strong story.

On Marathi fi lms getting more screen time in theatres, Jaypraad feels it is a very apt decision and should have been taken earlier. “Marathi audience does look forward to fi lms and, in the last couple of years, Marathi fi lm business has increased. But we don’t have fi lms showing in theatres at feasible times. Hindi fi lms have a lot of shows, sometimes up to 25 shows, if the fi lm is backed by a big banner. It makes sense to schedule Marathi fi lms at least at one prime time show. If the fi lms aren’t

People don’t understand this argument at all.” To create good cinema, you have to create a good audience too. “If one half of the process of making fi lms is making good fi lms then the other half has to inculcate the taste of good cinema amongst the audience. A fi lm club might help inculcate such a habit. We need to improve literacy towards such kind of cinema. Our duty is to improve an audience’s fi lm literacy.” anjali.shetty @goldensparrow.com

Prathamesh came across a blog, which spoke about the village Agia, located in Assam and how certain turn of events led four friends to rethink their life’s purpose. The crux of the fi lm is based on how the four friends are tempted to join a militant organisation. “I can’t reveal much because you have to watch the fi lm to know what happens next,” smiles the director. The fi lm is 30 minute long and is supported by theatre director Sukracharya Rabha and actor Adil Hussain. “We just decided to go to Assam and shoot. rathamesh KriSang is excited like a little kid. He cannot stop smiling. Bagging the Best Film Award, for his short One Last Question, at the fi fth Dadasaheb Phalke Film Festival 2015 (DPFF) is to blame for all the excitement. Prathamesh has good reason to be this excited. He has, after all, never trained to be a professional fi lmmaker, which makes the award even sweeter. In fact, Prathamesh was never interested in making fi lms. He wanted to be an animator instead. Speaking to TGS Life after bagging two awards at DPFF, Prathamesh says, “I learnt the art of fi lmmaking and animation from videos off the internet. Unfortunately, there are no institutes that teach animation well in our country. So I started freelancing as an animator and one of my clients asked me to help make a video. We have been extremely lucky to have had both of them support us,” adds Prathamesh. One Last Question is Prathamesh’s debut fi lm and it managed to bag two awards at its debut screening. “I am thrilled about the win but I do not want to be typecast as a director, who only makes socially relevant fi lms. I am going to make feature fi lms that are commercially viable. Unfortunately, nobody cares about producing short fi lms in India,” says the young fi lmmaker, who begins work on his next short fi lm next week. Prathamesh is currently concentrating on fi lm festivals. According to him, festivals help gain recognition and validate his work. Prathamesh has also won the Golden Palm Award at the prestigious 10th Mexico International Film Festival that took place at Rosarito Beach in Baja California, Mexico. “The important thing is that this fi lm needs to be seen by as many people as possible. We are planning to submit it to more festivals this year. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Our objective is to reach as many people as possible. Winning an award always feels good. It inspires us to keep pushing hard and making fi lms despite stiff competition,” says Prathamesh. One Last Question has also bagged an Official Selection at Kinolub Film Festival that will take place in Krakow, Poland. What’s in a name?

he names of some business enterprise border on inappropriate and funny, while others might qualify as creative. What each one of the following names has in common, though, is the ability to make the bystander laugh and wonder what they were thinking. A deeper dig reveals that most store owners came up with out-of-the-box names for their stores on purpose, while others effortlessly named their venture upon whatever came to their mind at that point of time. TGS dug around the city to come up with a list of chuckle-some names for shops, salons and eateries.
Goli Vada Pav No 1
Goli Vada Pav was founded by Mumbai’s Venkatesh Iyer and Shivadas Menon and they, now, have branches all over Pune but, boy, they do have a story behind this quirky name. “Nobody took Venkatesh Iyer, a finance professional, seriously when he told his friends of the plans of quitting his job and starting his own vada pav business. In jest, they accused him of giving them a goli, a local term used to denote a bluff, and that’s where Iyer’s vada pav business got its identity from. Also, the vada pav you get at any of the outlets are accurately round. Hence the name Goli vada pav,” explains Shaikh Jasim Mohammed, a franchise owner at Erandwane.
Do Bhai Hair Salon We desis can be lazy at times. We know how to use a situation to our benefit and look for the easiest way out. The owner of Do Bhai Hair Salon is no different. “The salon was started by my father and his brother, and hence the name - Do Bhai. Many of our customers ask us about the name, as it is very catchy and different. I think the name worked in our favour,” says Haiderali Shaikh. The salon chain has three branches in Pimple Saudagar area and is well known thanks to its name.
Pick Chick We love the fact that fashion jewellery businesses in the city have a sense of humour and have named their shop using a play on words; even though it has no connection with what’s on sale, whatsoever. Pick Chick is a store on FC Road that has a range of junk jewellery, hair bands, and other fashion accessories. Yes, the store clearly offers everything a yuppy teenager might require to get through the day. It, clearly, also helps that none of their patrons have cared to give a thought to the store’s name yet.
Silk Route pan shop The words Silk Route might remind you of singer Mohit Chauhan’s pop venture back in the 90s, or perhaps the ancient trade route between Asia, Europe and Africa. But, you would agree, Silk Route is too sophisticated a name for a pan shop. Nonetheless, at the corner of Lane No 6, Koregaon Park, you’ll see a small pan shop with the very words on its signboard. Co-owner Babloo Singh is quite famous in the area for his sweet pan flavoured with chocolate and seasonal fruits, such as mango, dates, and mint. “The name sounds very fancy to people. There was a restaurant nearby by the name Silk Route, and we simply copied it for the pan shop,” says Singh.
Yeta Zata Restaurant If you are walking on the busy Laxmi Road market, it’s hard to miss the big signage that says, Yeta Zata. There is no accompanying description to help you understand the nature of business at Yeta Zata. Clearly, interest levels are piqued by now. This is exactly what the owners of the restaurant were hoping would happen when they names their enterprise Yeta Zata. “You will never find this street empty, you see people come and go all day long. So we came up with the name Yeta Zata. Th restaurant is two years old now, and we have customers throughout the day. Our Pav Bhaji is very famous,” says a proud Aatish Junavne, the co-owner of the joint. Naming a business is tough so when an owner puts in the time and effort to come up with a clever play on words, we think they deserve to be praised.

true blue beer lover might know of Ninkasi, the Sumerian goddess of beer, but you’d have to be an aficionado to have heard of the Sumerian poem Hymn to Ninkasi, which is pretty much a recipe to brewing mild beer. Have we managed to pique your interest? Certified beer judge, Shailendra Bist will share even more dope at the Beer Gyan workshop scheduled for mid-May. Shailendra really loves his beer and is often seen talking to unsuspecting patrons about developing a better and deeper appreciation of craft beer. “I’m, possibly, the only Indian beer judge certified by the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP), USA,” he says, as he justifies the urge to share beer gyan, adding, “I am deeply passionate about the history of beer, its association and impact on popular culture as well as the art and science of brewing. I love talking all things beer. That’s how the idea for the workshop came about.” The hour-and-a-half long session will crisscross through the art and science of brewing, classic beer styles, as well as a brewery tour, before ending with a tasting session with nearly eight beers. If the prospect of sipping eight different brews doesn’t perk you up, nothing will. Still looking for more reasons to sign up? Here is a sneak peek into Shailendra-special beer trivia: Pairing it right Almost every food can be paired with the right kind of beer. summer salads, feta cheese and a mild grilled fish or chicken. Slightly spicier foods like chicken wings, chorizo, masala chicken, strong cheese like stilton pair well with ‘hoppier’ beers like Indian Pale Ales (IPAs). Grilled meats like pork, jerk chicken and steak can go well with maltier beers like porters and stouts. Stouts also pair well with chocolate-based desserts. “Drink local, drink fresh! Take the time to smell your beer. Some beers, like IPAs and Belgian Ales, will surprise you with the complexity of its nose. Take at least some time to learn more about your beers - attend a session, search information online or read some books. You will be surprised how much more you can appreciate your beer drinking experience when you know a little more about it,” explains Shailendra. Dos and don’ts Never drink your craft beer chilled - 5 to 7 degrees is perfect temperature for beers. At low temperatures, you don’t taste or smell the beer properly. Mega industrial lager brands have propagated the myth of chilled beer, because, Shailendra points out, they don’t really want you to taste anything and be able to hide all the flaws in their beers. “Save your money and palate, drink any local craft beer. Unfortunately, imported craft beer is never stored properly and is fully oxidised by the time you drink it. Don’t drink out of a bottle. You will taste and smell so much more if you use the right glassware.” anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com What: Beer Gyan; Where: Independence Brewing Co, Mundhwa; When: May 16, 2 pm

hen in Italy, antipasti are a must on the table. Digging straight into the main course would just be wrong. Traditional antipasti are meant to stimulate the appetite. They stand even above starters and a glass of wine in the course list. Chef Amit Puri, from Spaghetti Kitchen, and chef Giuseppe Lioce, from The Westin Pune, share the nitty-gritty of cold antipasti. Cold antipasti are small bites that can be prepared well in advance, chilled, and served straight from the refrigerator. Some cold antipastos might need to be cooked in advance, but they are served chilled once cooked. Chef Puri explains, “A number of ingredients can make excellent antipasti. For vegetarians, mushrooms, artichokes, olives, asparagus and bell peppers make lovely antipasti. For non-vegetarians, the list is endless. Cured meat, smoked meat, cold cuts, chicken, ham, pork, beef, smoked salmon, tuna, and so on. Select melons go well with cured meat and can make a good platter. The list of cheese that can be used on a cold platter is limitless. A good cheese, or a cheese dip, with homemade garlic bread or crackers is the most common vegetarian antipasto.” Antipasti should be small and simple, never crowding out the main meal. The choice of anti-

pasti should be narrowed down to two or three ingredients. One must also consider incorporating a few fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables. Puri adds that antipasti should complement the main meal and repetition of ingredients must be avoided. “The colour and appearance of the antipasti must be given equal importance as the taste and flavour. A cold antipasti looks best when served on a flat platter, with relevant garnish and dips.” In Italy, antipasti course simply refers to the dish that precedes all the others to come. Chef Lioce shares, “Back home, most restaurants offer a range of antipasti. Some are displayed on buffet tables or in refrigerated bars. Guests can help themselves or make their request known to the waiter, who then prepares the plates and brings them to the table.” According to the chefs, cheeses go well with jam, honey and dry fruits. The Parma ham goes well with melon, salami goes wonderfully well with the focaccia or toast, marinated artichokes go well with acidulous dressing, seafood salads go well with a white wine dressing. “Usually cold antipasti need to be accompanied by a glass of good wine, beer or a cocktail like Spritz or Americano. The fragrance and appearance of the food that you serve is important, so blending flavours, aromas and colours will make for the most interesting antipasti.” anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

T
he Facebook app on Android is a nightmare. It weighs in at 35MB and hogs resources, constantly working in the background and draining your battery as well as eating up internet data. If you use a lowcost phone, Facebook takes up far more space than is necessary. Recognizing this, the social network giant has now launched a stripped down version of its app for Android that is meant to work smoothly on older and low-cost phones. It’s significantly lighter at 252KB compared to the 35MB, works well on 2G networks and during bad connectivity, and yet supports everything that the main Facebook app does. Sure, it doesn’t look as pretty and misses things
like auto-playing videos or non-compressed images, but it is functionally as good. In fact, Facebook Lite has one major advantage over the main app. Normally, Facebook now requires you to install the Facebook Messenger app separately to chat with your friends. But in Facebook Lite, it’s part of the app itself and you don’t need Messenger separately. That’s even more space saved on your phone! In a way, Facebook Lite shows you just what you would get by visiting the Facebook mobile site through a browser. The main difference is that this one works with Android’s notifications system. ×
GET IT! Facebook Lite isn't officially available in India through the Play Store, but you can safely sideload it. Do Camera lets you do three cool things with any photo you take, like logging a meal to your Jawbone Up fitness tracker or snapping a business card and making a Google Calendar entry of the date and place you received it.

Browse through recipes created by other users to find actions that are useful to you, or create your own recipes.
The three Do apps each let you set up a maximum of three actions, called "recipes", which you can swipe between to activate. Do Button also includes a widget so you never have to fire up the app, you can simply press a button from your home screen. For
each Do app, you will need to grant access to any service you want to connect or act upon. The focus with the Do apps is on speed. "Why tap so many times when you can get it done in fewer taps?" Can’t argue with that logic! ×

Outlook Every working professional’s favourite email program, Microsot Outlook, is finally on Android and iOS
O
utlook has been the preferred program for handling work email on the computer, and Microsoft is now looking to bring that same magic to your smartphone. Meet Outlook for iOS and Android, an email client that might just make you ditch whatever you are using right now. Just because it’s made by Microsoft doesn’t mean you are locked into Microsoft products. Outlook supports Gmail and Google Drive, Yahoo Mail, iCloud, Dropbox, and of course, Outlook.com and OneDrive. Similarly, there is support for Calendar services too. Once you set up your accounts, Outlook will retrieve your emails and sync them with the service, so you’re good to go. Email can be overwhelming, so Outlook focuses on helping you get through it. The “Focussed” tab, for instance, highlights emails that need your attention. Behind the scenes, Outlook uses a smart algorithm to figure out which emails are important by analyzing subject lines, senders and recipients, and your previous emails. Similarly, you can filter your inbox to check out unread messages, flagged items, or emails with attachments. The app has two customizable gestures. Swipe left on an email and it’ll get archived. Swipe right on an email and it will be removed from your inbox right now, but land back into it later; think of it as a “remind me later” function. And then there are the shortcuts, like RSVP-ing to an email with a calendar invitation with Accept/Decline buttons, that also automatically adds the entry into your calendar. Similarly, while sending an email, you can quickly attach your current location or an attachment from any cloud service. The surprising thing about Outlook isn’t that it’s a great app, which it undoubtedly is. The surprising thing is how quickly you get used to its simple functions, and then wish they were available on other apps like Gmail.

When work brings the odd ones together They may be as different as chalk and cheese but their creative dreams ensure they work in sync. Proudly holding onto their own quirks, these business partners have found a middle path to work together and nurture the best in them
Pravin Tarde and Pranit Kulkarni
By Anjali Shetty-Shirsath @shetty_anjali
R
unning a business with a partner is much like trying to make a marriage work. You may, or may not, have known your partner for a long time before making the tryst with destiny but, as you move forward, you simply have to learn to live with the quirks. In fact, in most cases, it’s the oddities that make the journey fun. The more unusually paired business partners we met, the more the belief was affi rmed. Most partners were aware of the others eccentricities but the sheer power of what they brought to the table outweighed the whims. If anything, over time, the difference in personalities has only enhanced their venture, say the business partners. Take the case of Pune-based co-directors Pravin Tarde and Pranit Kulkarni. Before they came together to direct the under-production fi lm, Deool Banda, Pravin was known as a writerdirector, while Pranit was popular as a singer-music composer. Despite dealing with entirely different aspects of fi lmmaking, the two decided to team up and they happen to be the fi rst director duo in Marathi cinema. Bollywood having seen its fair share of director jodis in AbbasMastan and Raj-DK, among others. The two young directors hope to enhance what they bring to the table with their individual inputs. “Until now, we took our orders from the director but, with this fi lm, we are taking the entire team forward and leaving no stone unturned to make sure the fi lm is a success,” says Pravin. Pravin and Pranit aren’t the only partners from the city to have come together to start shop. Meet four, successful, Pune-based, business partners, who have learned to work together to enhance each others’ potential:
Sourcekode Technologies: Karan Vora and Amey Bapat

Quirkbox: Jayesh Sachdev and Rixi Bhatia Rixi Bhatia and Jayesh Sachdev met at the British Council Young Creative Entrepreneur Awards where they were both finalists. Later, they teamed up to launch Quirk Box with a vision to extend their creative force into a new domain as well as create a label that they found exciting and original. “We spent months figuring out the plausibility of the collaboration. Thus, the project, that I had wished to initiate for four years, finally became a reality with Rixi as my very able partner,” recalls Jayesh. Jayesh believes that two minds can’t always be on the same page. “We do have creative differences and we contradict each other’s ideas and opinions at times. But both of us eventually settle on a mutual agreement only because we have one agenda on our mind and that is to facilitate most benefits for the company.” The one factor both agree upon is their ability to balance, even compliment, each
other’s strengths and weaknesses. Rixi is a fashion designer, who can’t illustrate, and Jayesh is an illustrator, who can’t design clothes. So they bring their own expertise to the brand. “We work in such a way that we can make each other’s shortcomings our strengths. Our personal clashes are never given importance when we are taking decisions for the company. We may argue at times but we reach a mutual agreement that would purely benefit the company,” says Rixi. A successful business has only made the two want to do more for themselves and the company. Jayesh adds, “We want to reach out to a larger audience sitting in the remote corners of the world. Our vision is to spread quirkiness around the world by translating art through different functional mediums. Other than that, success has only made us more confident, which is very essential today.”

Taher isn’t impatient; he is, in fact, trying his best to make Abbas comfortable. Finally, Abbas smiles and sits down for a chat. “We met while pursuing a photography course at FAD International in Koregaon Park. Initially, we had separate ideas but reached a common ground after several discussions. Digital marketing interested me while Taher was keen on photography. When we worked individually, we realised that clients needed both photography as well as digital marketing ideas. So we decided to work together and offer everything under one roof,” recalls Abbas. They might be working together now but the two company names still remain different. “The idea is to work together, yet maintain an individual identity. The basic plan is to provide a one-stop-shop for marketing, advertising, art, and photography. Clients
need all of this at any given point,” explains Taher. They have a nine member team and work with a few freelancers as well. Abbas believes that Taher has great convincing ability and manages to project exactly what the client wants. “He just needs to be a little patient. He is extremely creative and does an excellent job in his domain,” says Abbas. Taher, on the other hand, thinks Abbas is perfect and needs no improvement, he says, “Our work culture is very smooth and we have never had creative differences. That is also because we know our domain well.” They are looking to expand to Nasik and Gujarat at the same time providing all-round services. “We do not want to be known just for one service. Partnering is not only about safety nets. You have to take responsibility and be equally involved. Creative differences will definitely crop up, but you need to define roles at the start. Above all, patience is a must,” Abbas shares.

Having moved away from medication, Reshma Valliappan is using art to create a change in how society perceives mental illness By Zainab Kantawala @kantawalazainab

hen you meet Reshma Valliappan for the first time three things stand out a cool haircut, countless tattoos and piercings, and her intense eyes. Reshma, aka Val Resh, is a painter, writer, mime artist and social activist, who focuses a number of issues, including mental health and human rights. Dealing with schizophrenia herself, Reshma’s hard-hitting attitude will leave you stumped. She believes in leading by example and is a powerful voice on issues of social stigma and injustice. Reshma has also penned a book, Fallen, Standing – My Life as a Schizophrenic, based on the years of struggle with the illness that began when she was 14 years old. She walks us through some pages of her life.
sions. Reshma stumbled across mime after travelling and getting to know the art better. She has conducted many mime shows around the city. “I interact with the people in my head. I call them my imaginary friends. I always thought that the only difference between me and an actor is the costume and makeup. When I began experimenting, miming came quite naturally to me. I was able to express my sadness or pain as part of an act,” she says.
FINDING MOTIVATION THROUGH ART “As a kid I took up many classes, including art, but I could never sit and focus like other kids; or go by the methods that were taught. So I have been thrown out of art classes. I painted on THE PUBLISHED walls instead and even made graffiti in school toilets,” says Resh- AUTHOR ma. Clearly, she is an artist with a beat of her own. Gradually, Reshma’s book, Fallen, Standing: My Life as a Schizothe artist learned to use colours to express her inner-self. “I first phrenic, is an account of her life. WEARING NUMEROUS PROFESSIONAL HATS Reshma believes in dreaming big. A never-give-up attitude is something that pushes her to move forward. When asked, how she manages everything, she smiles, “It’s the benefit of having so many alter egos! I’ve got an oversupply of imagination. Given that I already have schizophrenia and I’m recovering from brain tumour treatment, I don’t really have a choice but to wake up with the choice of putting my health first. If I feel stressed out, I make sure that I take a break.” FIGHTING FOR RIGHTS After going through a lot of discrimination and abuse, Reshma realised that it was important to get her voice heard. “Those suffering from a mental illness have absolutely no legal rights. But, thankfully, the law is now changing and it is important for society to hear about our pain, stigma and cruelty directly from us because we are the ones living with it,” she adds. zainab.kantawala@goldensparrow.com If you want to get in touch with Reshma mail her: theculturedculture@gmail.com; or log onto: http://valresh.com/

he loved to play with words as a child, says young author Anjali Kriplani, who remembers writing poetry when she was only 12. With age, she progressed to writing short stories and articles but writing an entire book always seemed too daunting. The task was eventually undertaken and now Anjali has two pop-fiction titles - Never Say Never and Written in the Stars - in her kitty. But the 22-year-old isn’t just an author, she has also dabbled in radio-jockeying, anchoring TV shows and handling public relation assignments. Anjali’s tryst with the pen began rather early. When she was still in school, the young girl’s short stories won contests and were well-appreciated. In fact, while still working in as an RJ with a local radio channel in Durban, South Africa, Anjali wrote three radio plays. “I was grateful for all the opportunities I received in South Africa, but I always wanted to come back to India, which was home for me. So I moved back to Mumbai in 2008.” Luckily for her, Anjali did not have to “wait to turn 50” before she could see her name on the cover of a book. “I began writing my first novel, Never Say Never, in
2010 but completed it in 2012. I sent the manuscript to Grapevine India in December 2012. Within a month, they told me they would like to publish it. The book was launched in May 2013 and since then it has received a lot of praise. Readers emailed me saying they loved how fresh, funny, and realistic the characters were. I knew I had found my true calling with writing. So, Written in the Stars came about. Cheesy as it may sound, I sometimes think this entire journey has been written in the stars,” says Anjali, who would read chick-lit novels by authors such as Fiona Walker, Marian Keyes and Helen Fielding when in college. Anjali hasn’t been formally trained in writing fiction although she did attend a six-week creative writing course at Xavier’s Institute of Communication (XIC), Mumbai, while she was working on her first novel. The young author credits a former professor and author of Four Alleys, Renu Balakrishnan for helping shape her first book. “She gave Write me her feedback on the choice novel and took the time out to share her inputs. Another person, who has always stood by me, is my sister, Amrata. She’s always my first sounding board when I write something new and her insights are invaluable,” says the author. Anjali is cur-

rently writing her third novel. While the first two works dealt with characters in their mid-to-late 20s, the latest book will be about young characters, who are still studying. The book showcases students from various walks of life coming together at an international university and is inspired by Anjali’s stint as an exchange student at a Canadian university. It isn’t writing a novel though, she agrees frankly, “I try to be productive when I begin work on a book, some days, I just can’t get much done. I accept that and I’m not too hard on myself. I write better early in the mornings or late at night. I also find that I’m much more productive if I do other work alongside writing, which is how my public relations company fits in during the day. With only two books sporting her name in the author’s column, Anjali is still to develop a writing quirk but she does have a confession to make. “I think I do my best work when I’m writing in bed. I have a desk under my bookshelf, which is where I should write so I can feel disciplined. But I’m so much more comfortable writing in bed, that the bed always wins over the desk.” It’s a good thing that the comfort of the bed inspires Anjali’s writing because there was a point when she was convinced she did not have a lot of writing left in her. When she completed Never Say Never, the young author was worried that she had used up all her talent and creative ideas in that book. “I was afraid that I wouldn’t have enough material for a new book after the first one but you just have to believe that you have more stories to tell and start writing. I started writing Written in the Stars with a basic plot in mind and it took shape and developed into so much more as I continued writing. It is this process of starting with a blank document and creating a world through your words that I find magical.” anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com
Ride on through to the other side Five bike enthusiasts decided to ride the ASEAN corridor on their prized motorbikes. Over seven long weeks, they traversed the route between Mumbai and Singapore TGS NEWS SERVICE @TGSWeekly
A lengthy, laidback, motorbike ride, six months of planning and five bravehearts, who love the feel of tar under their wheel - that’s what it takes to ride from Mumbait to Singapore. The 28,000 km ride is the latest feat by members of the Harley Owners India. Youhan Mubaraki and Rahul Deshmukh from Pune, Debashish Ghosh and Dinesh Rohra, aka Danny, from Mumbai, and Dharmendra Jain from Indore made up the enterprising team for the cross country ride. THE IDEA Debashish led the team and the complete itinerary. “Why did I ride to Singapore and back? Well, I just wanted to,” he says, He is also the first guy to have taken Harley Davidson from India to Nepal. “At first, even riding down out of the state was a huge thing for me. So I decided to do something more. I planned a ride to
Nepal. Eventually, I tried other places. Th is particular ride - a 28,000 km journey through the ASEAN corridor- has never been done before on a Harley. My friend was planning to do it on a Royal Enfield but it did not work out. So I decided to take on the challenge on my bike,” says Debashish. THE JOURNEY The 44-year-old got four seasoned riders together for the long ride. They started their journey on March 19 and brought it to an end on Friday, May 8. The group faced many challenges on the way, including language issues. “In India, riding is a challenge in itself. There is no traffic discipline. In Bihar, we came across roads full of potholes. It was like a video-game where I had to dodge potholes to reach my destination. These are cruising bikes and we were literally off-roading with them. It was a blessing to ride on roads in Thailand and Singapore though,” shares Debashish. ON THE WAY Youhan, a real estate entrepreneur, recollects being warned about North East India before getting on the trip. “People asked us to be extra cautious while in the northeastern states. Interestingly, they were the warmest and most affectionate people throughout the journey. In Thailand, locals were amused, and amazed, to hear that we visited River Kwai on our bikes,”
says the 44-year-old. Advocate Dharmendra Jain has been riding the Harley for two years now. Th is road trip taught him how to face obstacles and survive with minimum supplies. “Vegetarians face a huge problem on such rides. In these regions, even dal and roti isn’t available. I had to survive on boiled vegetables and rice. Secondly, language was a major issue. For half the journey, we couldn’t understand the local language. But all in all it was a great experience. I learned a lot. It has made me tougher,” smiles Dharmendra.
FUN ON THE RUN Debashish adds, “After we crossed Myanmar and reached Phuket Creek, locals were amused and gathered to listen to our story. They were in awe when we said we rode through Myanmar. Apparently no one does that as they fear the road. Honestly, there is no road there.” The team reached Mumbai on Friday and is already planning the next big ride. “It could be anywhere, as long as we get to explore and ride these beauties,” he smiles, patting his Harley. feedback.tgs@goldensparrow.com

dresses and boys in their casual tees established the fact that the evening demanded a relaxed look. Spotting the best dressed for the evening was quite a task, but it had to be done. Shreshi Singh, the marketing head at Landson Reality, chose to go with the tried and tested black but she gave it her own twist. In the era of crop tops and high waist pants a look like that is hard to mess and the gal totally nailed it. Like Shreshi did, with the long crochet overcoat, you too could dig
into your wardrobe to find something that’s still wearable. A pair of long leaf statement earrings was all that was needed to complete her look for the evening. Coincidently, another Singh was holding the flag high for the men at the event. Karan Singh rocked the casual look with a simple, navy blue polo tee and a pair of well-fitted denims. Karan,
a sales adviser for a real estate company, pulled off the hassle-free look perfectly as he settled in to enjoy the evening’s performance. When asked about his personal style, Karan said, “I like to keep it as comfortable as I can but taking a decision is quite a task. After all, who doesn’t like to look hot and grab attention on an evening out.” His casual attire seemed to look like he just threw something together but that wasn’t quite the case. Karan confessed, “I actually took an hour to look like this,” which seemed to be quite unlikely for a guy. Selecting the right clothes and perfecting his hair managed to eat quite a lot of Karan’s time. Nevertheless, he quickly earned brownie points for looking great and being gracious enough to admit to the effort it took.
