hreyas Talpade was in city as brand ambassador for the Pune Marathas team in the Champions Tennis League (CTL) starting from November 17, and announced that he was planning a biopic on Indian tennis legend Vijay Amritraj. The CTL is Amritraj’s brainchild. “Movies like Mary Kom, Bhag Milkha Bhag and Chak De India, have made a huge impact. Similarly, a movie on Amritraj will be a great inspiration. His autobiography, Vijay Amritraj: An autobiography with Richard Evans, has proved to be a huge success. There’s nothing more inspiring than a sports story, especially when it’s true,” said Talpade. Amritraj said that he would like to see me portray him, but that won’t be possible. He is much taller than me and an undersized Vijay Amritraj will never do. We are chalking out things. From childhood I have been fascinated with tennis. I have watched the greats like Björn Borg and John McEnroe on television. My father was aware of my passion for tennis but my family couldn’t afford to finance an expensive tennis career. So I turned to cricket instead. And today it is a thrill to be a part of a tennis league.”

Nolan’s universe: Interstellar Film: Interstellar Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, and Michael Caine Director: Christopher Nolan

TGS LIFE NOVEMBER 15, 2014 PUNE

By Yash Daiv

I

nterstellar is a piece of art where genres collide into each other seamlessly to form that ideal piece. Seldom does this happen (and happens only in Christopher Nolan movies) that a viewer’s imagination is comfortably stretched to encompass the expanse of storytelling. Interstellar’s power lies here, in its convincing of scientific concepts, people would not generally read. Nolan renders these concepts into the movie’s soul, telling his viewers of the amazing possibilities of the theories that Kipp Thorne, a popular physicist wrote down on a piece of paper. Christopher Nola’s direction is the hero of this movie. He infers a location which arrive in the form everything from the reality. of dust in his dear daughter Right from the setting, Murphy’s bedroom out of TGS Rating which is a future dystopia — a gravitational anomaly. a world literally smothered lead him to NASA, ooood They in dust to the probable now operating secretly. habitable planets, Nolan’s NASA decides to take him devising is very convincing. on board, use his pilot training The protagonist, Cooper (Matthew to dock their aircraft to a space McConaughey) finds co-ordinates to station called Endurance. He along

with Dr Brand (Anne Hathaway) then embark on a journey towards a wormhole which is expected them to open into a different galaxy where they hope to find a habitable planet. The story goes far beyond what seems like difficult science (but is not) and says how sentiments can transcend any barrier in theory and practice. A strong bond stays unaffected and has the power to work towards your ambitions, without losing hope. The cinematography, besides the story and screenplay deserves a special mention. Hoyte van Hoytema’s camera imitates Nolan’s vision. The cinematic and the sets are real integrated with images and metaphors of life, love and death. The camera is visual, the audience can see what’s happening out there in the space through the spaceship’s perspective when it enters the wormhole or surfs on waves as big as mountains or brushes past frozen clouds or when it becomes a black hole’s prey. There are some genuinely heart wrenching images. And as if the perspective was not enough, there are the visuals. The universe is not depicted as a fantastical canvas of stars and coloured star-streams, but it is crude. It is only illuminated by the sun, black holes, reflecting lights and rugged textures of planets. Nolan does not employ char or flying sparks to show horror, he shows it as if it would happen through blasts, absence of sound and a breaking human-spirit. There are real images of destruction and horror, of falling into nothingness that will bring you at the edge of your seat. Nolan has re-employed a few things in the visual department. For instance, a wormhole till today was depicted as a simple portal. In this movie the wormhole is spherical, a bubble which physically cuts across dimensions. Then there is the Gargantua, a giant black hole which sucks time and gravity. It is shown as an illuminated chaotic mass of energy. Besides the technical completeness of the film, the narration is taut and whole. It does not leave loose spaces but presents a large interpretive canvas towards the end. It is frightening and yet will stimulate you to think about the imaginary situation. To describe Interstellar in few words does injustice to the movie. It is a voyage within stars, a journey of cinema as an evolving and reinventing medium and a story of different worlds, human bonds, longing and eternity. yashdaiv@gmail.com

ombay Bhel located at Ghole Road, was launched in August 2014. As the name suggests, it serves a tangy spread of Mumbai-style street food, with a gourmet twist. The eatery is entrepreneur Love Baronia’s brainchild, and he has also designed the place and conceptualised the menu. The restaurant’s seating is in an open area amidst a cluster of bamboo trees. The wooden tables and green stools make for a outdoorsy, picnicky ambience.

P

une’s over-congested roads are hardly ideal or safe for bicycle riders. But that does not deter either the riders nor the bicycle industry. Quite the opposite, in fact, because bicycling is seeing quite a revival, harking back to an era when Pune was a bicycle town and pedal-pushing was the commonest means of mobility and bicycle sales have been rising constantly over the last five years. Thanks to new technologies and

the easy availability of world renowned brands, bicycling has now taken on a sportier than ever before dimension. The new all-terrain bicycles have put adventure biking within the reach of anyone with a willingness to use their lung and pedal power, besides giving those willing to brave through the bumper-to-bumper traffic a completely environment-friendly style of mobility and transportation.

FEATURES Around town

"Personal health is why people may have taken to cycling." -Nachiket Joshi

The bicycle buyers

No waiting in queues at bus stops, or paying for highpriced fuel, just swing into the saddle and pedal bicycle is an integral part of their daily life. It’s the best nonmotorised transport they can think of and allied to its bonus benefit as a means of keeping physically fit, as well as a fun recreation, bicycling is a win-win situation for every cleat wearer of the city. Owner of Life Cycle store, Nachiket Joshi says, “Personal health may be the single greatest factor why people may have taken to cycling. It can be integrated into one’s daily life easily and economically. The sport is a stress-reducing activity that simply makes people feel better. It is easier on ageing joints than jogging especially for folks over 50, lets riders cover greater distances than walking and allows for a more intimate, up-close experience than cars, buses or trains.” Businessman Andy Shetty vouches for its many benefits. “I want to stay fit and decided to take up cycling as it is a childhood passion. Now I cycle to most destinations, including short-haul trips to places in and around the city. This way I am also contributing to a pollution-free environment,” says Andy, who also participates in all kinds of cycling events. No carbon emissions, zero noise pollution, no parking problems and a boon for the lungs and even the heart probably, cycling seems like such a wise option.

The cost Bicycle stores in Pune now stock national and high end international brands, like Montra, Mongoose, Schwinn, BTWN, Bianchi, GT Bikes, Trek and Scott, with prices starting from Rs 26,000 and going up to a couple of lakh rupees. And there are as many types of bicycle as there are users. From a bicycle to ride around town, to the extreme adventure bikes to hit the mountain trails with, or the sporty hi-speed machines to go racing with, Pune’s cycling enthusiasts now have options galore and in fact, zeroing in on the bicycle of choice may prove to be quite task, unless you know exactly what you want. Of course, your age and physical ability will also determine the kind of machine that will suit you best.

Rent a bike For the occasional ride or adventure, you can also rent a bicycle. Rents range from Rs 400 to Rs 2000. Surendar Cycle Stores on Karve Road has 25 bicycles for rent, including high end racing bikes, hybrid and road bikes. “For those who are not sure about investing in a bicycle, we rent them our bicycles on a weekly basis so they get into the groove of cycling,” says store owner Bakshish Singh Talwar. The typical bike renter is a young IT professional, whose work schedule does not allow him a regular bicycling regimen. It makes more sense for him to rent a bike before purchasing one. Le Plaisir, Bhandarkar Road, is a shop that is promoting the cycling trend. “The owner bought six bicycles from us for

Padmini, Nachiket, Ulhas and Gayatri Joshi at Khardung La

his employees who now commute to work on their cycles,” said Nachiket Joshi of Life Cycle.

Dream destinations

Team Life Cycle racing at one of the races in Bangalore

The hardcore bicycle enthusiasts of Pune are not content with just routine rides but take off on real adventure rides to their dream destinations such as the lofty Leh and Ladakh, with the highest motorable roads in the world, not to mention the legendary passes such Baralach La and Khardung La. Of course, such endeavours are for those who take their bicycling very seriously indeed and have the adequate experience to undertake such arduous physical feats. But for those who can and do, Leh and Ladakh, 5000 metres above sea level, are the ultimate riding thrill. Cymour of Kalyani Nagar had organised ‘The Land of High Passes’, a Ladakh tour in August. Life Cycle conducts such tours regularly, with contingents of 30-40 riders. “We have taken cycling enthusiasts on tours of the Deccan, to Sinhagad and the hinterlands,” said Nachiket Joshi. He also organises racing events, such as the 100km race to Panchgani, on September 28, that featured 28 male and two women riders. Joshi who participates himself, has been conducting these races since 2011. barnalee.handique@goldensparrow.com yashdaiv@gmail.com

your gladiators Gladiator sandals are more of a look than a trend at this point. TGS Life tells you

I

f you’re a woman who has yet to convince her man to wear sandals, or if you’re a man who’s not completely sold on the idea of wearing “mandals”, then reaching a compromise is an absolute must. While you can try and avoid all sandal-appropriate activities as much as you can, chances are, you’ll still come across a place and a time that requires you to reveal more of your feet and toes (say, a beach maybe?). When you cannot put off wearing sandals any longer, don’t fret because there are alternatives. There are shoe styles out there that offer all the comfort and breath-ability of sandals and all the sophistication and support of closed shoes. These are Gladiators. Sahil Kejriwal, director, Estd 1977 talks about the inspiration for gladiators for men. “Estd 1977 brand brings in European sensibilities into the Indian footwear market and Gladiators are one of the few masterpieces which G Shoe has innovated keeping in mind Indian customer looking out for new designs and style in footwear. With their roots in Italian history, Gladiators are stylish with a vintage touch which combines outstanding craftsmanship and elegant aesthetics,” says Kejriwal. Gladiators are meant more for the fashion-conscious men, as it’s become pretty

Shoe tips for men

Fashion for men synonymous with the metrosexual look. Gladiator sandals are more of a look than a trend at this point. “Depending on your feet as well as ankle dimension try and go for a much more refined appearance. Make sure your sandals match your outfit and choose at least two different styles and colours. Male grooming is on the increase. Make sure you look after your feet. Women do look at men’s feet, and judge by what shoes they wear, it tells a lot about personal style. Be inspired by the current collections and ditch your chunky sandals and update your shoe rack,” adds he. Refrain from wearing sandals that look massive on feet. Try not to neglect your feet

as all in all it can look very unattractive. Don’t wear socks with your gladiators it just looks awful. Gladiator sandals do not go with formal attire. Darker colours such as black, tan and various shades of brown are current

1. Your shoes should be darker than your pants 2. Your socks should be a nice bridge between your shoes and your pants 3. The darker your suit, the darker your shoes 4. Match your socks to your shoes 5. Your shoes should match your belt 6. Know how to shine your shoes, and if you can’t do it, find a professional shoe shiner. You’ll get great looking shoes and an interesting conversation 7. Loafers go with just about anything 8. When in doubt go conservative over edgy 9. Always choose fit over style 10. Buy a nice pair of brown oxfords, they go with almost anything favourites. It generally takes 7- 10 days to construct a piece designed for men. anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

Chokers back in fashion What brides need to know when buying

A

statement accessory can add instant glamour. Try a choker to jazz up your overall look. A teenage style staple in the 1990s, chokers are returning in a big way. Actress Kate Beckinsale was seen flaunting a gold choker with a Bejewelled plunging, cutout white dress for a party in West Hollywood earlier this week. Her neckline accentuated the neckpiece, but Beckinsale’s up-do and simple make-up managed to grab more eyeballs for the accessory. In the recent past, celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Rosie Huntington-W hiteley and Rihanna were also seen sporting the trend. IANS

f you dream it, it you can achieve it. Your thoughts give shape to the physical world,” says Manoj Pandit, 46, owner of Techniart Hair Salon. A random encounter inspired Pandit to start his unisex salon. “In 1985, I happened to visit Mumbai. Wandering around the neighbourhood, I saw a boy expertly snipping a girl’s hair. I was impressed. Before that I had never thought that a man could fashion a woman’s hair. Those days there were just a handful of women parlours in Pune, while Mumbai was brimming with famous parlour. That’s when I decided to go in for proper training in the grooming profession. “I stayed with my relatives in Mumbai to pursue my career. There were not many institutes and I could not afford the steep fees. So the best thing to do was to join a parlour and work as an assistant. I was very observant and very interested in hair cutting and styling. I was a quick learner unekar and for six months Manoj Pandit, 46, owner, Techniart Hair Salon worked in a number of reputed parlours, and acquired all the skills and knowledge that I could in Mumbai. I also gathered more information about the latest styles and techniques from books and magazines. “I returned to my home town, Pune, and started work at the unisex parlour of The Pride Hotel in Shivajinagar. From there I moved to the Nalini Yasmin and Lakme salons. I learned a lot from Nalini, who also showed me the secrets of the trade. I was also fortunate to work with international hair stylist Eric Landor,at the Lakme salon. Along with all the experience and knowledge, I had also developed my own methods and distinctive style. “In 2002, I launched my Techniart Hair Studio at F C Road, with an investment of about 2 .5 lakh rupees. Since then, I have worked steadily and creatively, and today I can boast of a large and faithful clientele that includes celebrities, students, working professionals, and housewives. Our services include hair cutting, hair colouring, straightening etc and we even have a spa. Our prices start from Rs 500, according to the services. I also conduct training sessions, and I have trained 0ver 400 hair stylists,” Pandit said. (Second floor, Rachana House, FC Road. Contact: 9822024191) barnalee.handique@goldensparrow.com
