e had a very humble beginning. In 1974, my father Dattatraya Yemul came to Pune from Ahmednagar, to earn a livelihood. To make both ends meet, he worked as a salesman in a garment store. In 1994, my father decided to launch his store. He rented a small space of about 200 sq ft and started selling saris. The business took off and gradually my father shifted to a bigger store,” reveals Amol Yemul, owner of Peshwai stores. Amol began assisting his father when he was in college. By the time he completed his MCom, he knew everything about his father’s business. In 2000, Amol and brother Rahul opened their own showrooms, ‘Peshwai’ on Kumthekar Road. The duo also owns ‘Peshwai Creations’ (which deals with traditional and designer sarees) and ‘Peshwai Shrimant’ (an exclusive store for men), launched in 2004. “We named the stores’ Peshwai’ because in the bygone eras. in shaping the history of our state as well as our country. Moreover, our customers can relate to the name,” explains Amol. ‘Peshwa Creations’ is a 7500 sq ft store, spread over four levels. The first floor is meant for synthetic and daily wear saris. The second floor has 9-yard saris and handloom saris from the south, malu, maheswari and Indori. The third floor has silk and designer saris while the fourth floor features wedding collections. Amol says, “We have a collection of traditional saris from different parts of our country. We have tie-ups with weavers and ‘karigars’ who work exclusively for us. We select the colours and designs and place an order. After they complete the work we collect the saris in bulk from them.” The saris at the store starts from Rs 200 and goes up to Rs 3 lakhs. They also make saris on custom colour, design and style. Delivery usually takes 2 ½ months. ‘Peshwai Srimant’ deals in branded ready-mades, formals and casual wear for men. The brands range includes Van Huesen, Reid and Taylor, Park Avenue, Zodiac, Digjam and others. The 6500 sq ft store has suitings and shirtings on the first floor and ethnic wear on the second floor.” We have kurtas for festivals, pujas, weddings and different occasions. When a customer steps into our store our trained staff will guide him till he finds the perfect outfit for the occasion,” says Amol. The third floor stocks branded ready mades, casuals and formals. In future, the brothers are planning to launch another store in the city. Besides, these Amol and Rahul are into construction business. In 2011 under the brand of DY Developers they launched their first project at Sadashivpeth. “D Y stands for Dattatraya Yemul. We have named it after our father. He has always been a source of inspiration,” says Amol. Reviews refined symbols and metaphors. For instance, the Oedipal complex is visible but subtle. There is a good amount of physical tension between Haider and his mother (Ghazala, played by Tabu) that gives the movie a darker dimension. Ghazala, as the overprotective mother, is a catalyst to the entire drama. She emotes overtly only towards her son, but her emotional stance affects everyone. Bharadwaj’s slow narration settles like snow — delicate, but firm. He then takes the madness of the protagonist and injects it into the landscape. The Indian Army, politicos, police, goons and family all merge with each other with no relationship boundaries and hamper the quest of a mad protagonist. This movie has a soul that dangles between the jannat and jahanum, it dangles between the violent minds and conducive seductions. It is a phenomenon of errors, armaments, gore and thoughts. It is quest that starts like a stream and explodes with a sun-like intensity. yashdaiv@gmail.com

The actual expedition to the North Pole was from July 1 to July 12, 2014, and we reported at Helsinki, Finland a day in advance. We boarded the Quark Express from Murmansk in Russia. From the time we set sail, everything was scenic and mesmerising. The terrain was covered in sheets of snow. It was a white world. Once on the ship,

ravelling has always been my pleasure. So when friends, cousins and business associates planned a trip to the North Pole, I was thrilled. There were 13 members in our group. I researched the destination, as it is important to know about Northern the place we are going to and the clothing, medicine and necessities required on this trip. expeditions It was no regular trip, as we were going to the top of the world. The trip had to be planned in great detail. We set sail on the ‘Quark Express’, an ice-breaker that makes only two voyages every year and the berths fi ll up very fast. There is room for only 128 passengers, and we booked our berths 15 months in advance. It was imperative that we went this year as the ship retires in July 2015. We were with Quark Expeditions.

I wish I had a super telephoto lens to get a close-up of the polar bear. However, with the lens (24mm – 105mm) that I had, I was able to capture the wilderness, notably the tracks of the polar bear as the beast walked away from our ship

Our ship carried the Olympic torch to the North Pole for the 2000 Winter Olympics. The torch was gifted to the captain of the ship. It was an honour to hold the torch albeit in the comfort of the ship’s lounge

This was our ship’s helicopter. When the Zodiacs were not operational due to ice packs, the only way to make landings was with the chopper, weather permitting.

There are many species of wildlife in the Arctic, including a few animals and birds. Seen are a flight of birds headed towards one of the many islands of Franz Josef Land.

there was no question setting foot on land save for the landings by Zodiac, a small rubber boat or by helicopter. The ship was our base for 13 days. We travelled over 4500 km, through 10 to 12 feet of packed ice. The voyage took us through Barents Sea and the frozen Arctic Ocean. We touched a few islands in Franz Josef Land. It was more about the journey and less about the destination — the North Pole or 90 degrees north — geographically speaking, from where everything was south! Some of the memorable moments were landing and hoisting our tri-colour at the North Pole, exploring Champs Island. All islands are located at Franz Josef Land. It’s all water otherwise. We landed was to explore the vegetation and rock formations. Champs Island is famous for its perfectly spherically boulders, some as large as two metres. Cape Tegetthoff, also located at Franz Josef Land, is known for two stacks, jutting out about 300 feet from the seashore. The location also has ruins of an explorer’s cabin and it’s here you can sight polar bears. We were stranded atop Bear Mountain on Rudolf Island for over six hours in sub-zero temperatures with wind speeds in excess of 15 knots. We had landed by helicopter, but the chopper could not return due to heavy fog. Visibility was zero. That was an experience I will remember forever. Besides the unique terrain, we also feasted on international cuisine, cooked by expert chefs, that included a few Asian delicacies. Of course, we also enjoyed the pre-cooked Indian meals that we had carried with us.

f you can hold the attention of Pune’s audiences, your future as a musician is bright. The city’s event organisers will also second this opinion. Akash Afley — founder of Reaping Perfections, a celebrity and event management company — says, “From being a city famous for arguably the biggest classical music event in India— the Sawai Gandharva, Pune today also hosts the mega music event, NH7 Weekender. Clubs, pubs and lounges no longer stick only to Bollywood tracks to get their guests grooving. The city has audiences for a wide variety of music, be it heavy metal, alternate rock, sufi, reggae, folk and much more.” The internet and music festivals have sparked a boom for independent music in the last five years. Owner Khodu Irani thinks the reason for this success is because they don’t limit themselves to any genre, and their patrons are drawn in by this variety. “I think we have one of the best music scenes in the country as of now,” he says. “What I really like about it is the diversity. There’s space for everyone — from indie music to fi lm music to EDM (Electronic Dance Music). It’s a very lively ecosystem.” However too many gigs feature on fi lm or electronic music because these are very popular forms that draw big crowds.

For Irani, the biggest challenge is attracting audience for the eclectic music. “We don’t like repeating acts too often, but we don’t have a very informed audience, so getting them excited about new music is tough,” says the 33-year-old. “Secondly, foreign artists are hard to get to High because of legal wrangles and a corrupt bureaucracy. Thus we miss out on quite a few great artists who are touring the country.” Iranihandpicks the featured bands himself and the criteria

This Kondhwa boy set up his event and celebrity management company three years ago. They provide artistes to places in the city that feature live music. His special contribution has been introducing the city to Alternative and Gospel Rock and EDM. “I would rate the music scene in Pune at 8 out of 10,” he says. According to him, Pune likes psychedelic music, and even Hindi hard rock, given that homegrown band Ashwamedh has a good fan following. “The major challenge that managers face is fitting the artist’s fee within the budget of the host club or lounge. The marketing and PR for such events is weak.” Afley clubs new performers with established artistes of the same genre to give them a foot-in-the-door. Singer-performer Tarab Khan opened for Udit Narayan and singer Ami Mishra opened for the Anu Malik show. “However, introducing a genre such as classic or soft rock,

It could be a new band or an exciting genre varying from classical to the latest pop.” To them, the challenge is in whether the audience will like the new artiste. “You have to take that risk,” says Chantelle. “If you sell it properly to the audience and believe in the artist, your event is a success.” Chantelle thinks that if the audience has read or heard about the band or artiste, they look forward to the event. “Word of mouth is best way to get to people.” So Arthur and Chantelle do Music & their best to spread the word before lyrics they bring an act down to the Pune stage. anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

is a bigger challenge,” he says. “The right method of promotion to the target audience through attractive offers is the only way to reach them. For instance, clubbing food discounts with tickets of the show helps.” For instance, in October, a yet to be decided venue will see a rare performance by DJ Apoorva Singh, who is also a percussionist.

onversations in Nirav Modi’s home always tend to veer towards jewellery and diamonds. The jewellery designer grew up in Belgium where his father still trades in rough diamonds. “He took over from my grandfather and continued the family business,” says Nirav. “Dinner talk was so often about rare and important diamonds that I don’t really remember when my interest was piqued and fascination with the rarest and finest jewels began. I was mesmerised by the idea of collectors who would look only for the most exquisite stone. By the time I was ready to start working, most diamond terminology was second nature to me. I never specifically planned this as my path, but after gaining diamond expertise, I discovered jewellery and design was an inherent passion.” Nirav went to Wharton but dropped out to follow his passion. This year, his 88-carat diamond necklace sold for USD 8 million at a Sotheby’s auction. In the city for an exhibition of his crafted works, the Mumbaikar spoke to TGS Life about how to curate wedding jewellery. Cur ating “The bridal trousseau must be a reflection of the bride,” he says. “A statement piece or two is a must. An engagement ring is increasingly gaining importance as a bride’s first ever trousseau jewel. Invest in a pair of diamond earrings you can wear every day. Classic bridal jewellery should symbolise all that is precious and dear to the bride. In the modern context, a bride prefers jewellery which has its roots in culture and craftsmanship, but is still something that is an extension of her personality, and something she can wear even after her wedding, perhaps with modifications. While bridal jewellery is generally traditional, it must also be timeless and not something that might be outdated after a while.” The most important aspect of buying diamonds and diamond jewellery is reliable certification. laboratory. “I strongly believe in this, and all our diamonds are certified by the Gemological Institute of America (the GIA),” says the 43-year-old. “Always give precedence to quality over quantity or size. This is wise not only from an investment perspective but also ensures your jewellery looks and feels special. Diamond jewellery should also be lightweight and comfortable. Heavy, cumbersome jewellery — uncomfortable to wear and to store — often subdues the brilliance of the diamonds with its propensity for too much gold.” Symbolism Jewellery should be a reflection of who you are. If a gift, it should convey the special bond of the relationship. On a practical note, jewellery should be comfortable to wear. “I have always believed that jewellery should be perceived as an emotional investment rather

Cleaning Jewellery maintenance includes storing, care and cleaning. “If you have purchased new jewellery for your wedding there is no need to get it cleaned. However, if you are wearing heirloom jewellery, send it to your jeweller for a thorough cleaning and a general check-up for loose prongs, chipped stones or damaged mountings,” advises Nirav. “Avoid home remedies such as cleaning with toothpaste or dish-wash liquid as these leave behind residues or damage coloured gemstones. Get your pieces cleaned professionally every three to six months.” Stor age All diamond jewellery should be stored in separate boxes, according to Nirav. When storing small items such as rings and earrings in a large box, wrap them individually in a piece of lint-free cloth. The boxes should shut tightly to prevent air and moisture contact. “You may wear your diamond engagement ring 24X7, but remove it while engaged in rough work because despite a diamond’s durability, a hard blow can chip it. Chlorine bleach can damage and discolour the mounting, so no diamonds in the pool as well. Install a ring holder near the kitchen sink. Not only will this keep your jewellery away from grease and dirty dishwater but also abrasive cleaning liquids that may corrode the setting.” anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

was having a cup of coffee and overheard these guys having a conversation about food. I walked up and asked them a little more about their group Make a Difference. Twenty-three-year-old Rohit Powar is president of the group. He moved to Pune from Aurangabad eight years ago and now lives in Shivaji Nagar. Rohit does not eat outside. “I eat food that is cooked by my mom. I don’t know why this is it a big deal for others,” says the final year engineering student, “but eyebrows are raised when I tell people I haven’t had chocolate, soda, chips, ice-cream or any kind of junk in the past four years. I don’t eat fried food even at home. One day I just decided to stop having cold drinks. When I achieved that, I asked myself why stop here? I quit everything that wasn’t cooked by my mother and became a vegetarian.” This creates awkward social situations, but Rohit is adept at handling them. “I don’t Name: Rohit Powar, Age: 23, go out with family, but with friends, so there lives at Shivaji Nagar is a lot of peer pressure [to eat out]. The full brogue and semi brogue Bespoke shoe-maker Naman Shah introduces us to types of men’s shoes and their appropriate use

he brogue — a kind of ornamented shoe - is an essential shoe in the closet of a shoe fetishist. It started as an outdoor shoe such as the Oxford and the Derby, sans decorations. Irish farmers were the first to decorate shoes with punch patterns to drain out the water that accumulated while working in the bogs. They put holes into the toe caps and quarters of their heavy leather shoes so that the insides would dry better. The punch holes came to be known as broguing and the more flamboyant the pattern, the less formal the shoe becomes. Once the brogue found its way into the closets of nobility,

it went through a process of transformation. Shoe-makers began to make brogues out of ever softer and thinner leather, and the lines became more elegant. The original function of the perforations was forgotten and they became purely decorative.

How to wear brogues

• Full brogue is not appropriate formal wear. Quarter brogues in black or oxblood make for perfect business shoes. • The less formal the shoe, the more punching it has. • Brogues come in a variety of colours, with classics being black and brown. Personally, I like oxblood very much and even navy or dark green. • In recent years, I have seen creative broguing such as shotgun or buck shot brogues that look a bit like somebody fired a shotgun onto the leather. • Brogues work well with blazers, sports coats, casual suits in lighter colours and tweed. • Start with an oxblood semi-brogue or a chestnut brown pair. If you work at a bank, law firm, go with black quarter brogues.
