Oh fish! Fish is the staple diet for many. TGS ask three Puneites for their favourite recipes By Barnalee Handique @ barnalee

Richard Barooah, VP, Business Oper ations, RIMC Fish is an important part of our diet. Growing up on the banks of Brahmaputra river, river fish has been a staple on our

tables. Although we have different versions of cooking, the most common recipe we Assamese enjoy is the delicious masortenga. The curry is made like a light soup with potatoes, tomatoes and fish. Since we cannot get river fish every day, I also make the curry with fish like rohu or surmai. Even small fish can be used. Pieces of fish are shallow fried till they are golden brown and added to the curry. A handful of peas can be added to the curry. It is the ideal comfort food which can be eaten with a plate of rice. Masor Tenga ( Potato, Tomato fish curry) Ingredients: Rohu fish - 5 to 6 pieces Potatoes - 2 medium size Tomatoes - 4 Onion -1 Garlic - 4 cloves. Turmeric - ¾ tsp 1/2 tsp cumin powder (optional) Water- 3 cups Mustard oil - 4 tbsp Coriander – half a bunch For seasoning Bayleaf -1 Pasporon (a mixture of saunf, rai, methi, jeera and kalunji) -1 tsp Green chillies- 2

Method: Add turmeric and salt to the pieces of fish and half fry it. In another pan add oil and add the bayleaf, pasporon and green chillies. Add the onion, garlic, turmeric and jeera powder. Fry it till it is golden brown. Meanwhile cut the tomatoes and potatoes in small pieces. Add it to the masala and fry it for 1520 minutes. Once the tomato is fried and the potato pieces are half-cooked add the water. Let the curry boil for 10 minutes. Add the pieces of fish and boil it for another 10 minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with rice. Swati K anhere, Photogr apher I love to cook fish in a variety of ways. For any dish to turn out perfectly, the spices need to be in right proportions. The next step is to blend it to the right consistency. Add the right amount of water or lemon juice according to the recipe. My all-time favourite fish is Surmai. I cook it often as my parents relish it. I know how to prepare the fish in a variety of ways. I like this fish best when served shallow fried. It has its own flavour and the masala Swati Kanhere that goes into preparing this dish heightens the taste. I have seen my mother cook this particular dish many times and I have learnt it from her. Surmai (shallow) fry Ingredients: Surmai( Kingfish) – 4 to 6 pieces cut into thin slices For marinating Turmeric - 2 teaspoons Garlic - 5-6 cloves Ginger – 1 inch For the paste Mirchi (chilly) powder - 1 tsp or according to taste Coriander powder -1 tsp Cinnamon powder - 1 tsp Jeera powder - 1 tsp Kokum Aga l-1/2 tsp Salt to taste Rice flour - 2 tbsp Rawa - 1 tbsp Oil - 4 tbsp Time : 30 minutes Method: Clean the slices of fish with water, drain IT and keep aside. Marinate it with turmeric, salt, garlic and ginger paste for two and half hours. For coating the fish, prepare a paste with mirchi powder, coriander powder, jeera powder, salt and kokum (agal) extract to make a thin paste. Baste the slices of fish on both sides and then pat the fish in a mixture of rice flour and rawa. Heat the pan and add oil. Add the fish and shallow fry it. Serve with coriander chutney. Ratna Ghosh, Housewife Fried fish or fish curry is a must for lunch and dinner in a Bengali home. Bengalis like fish firstly because the Bengal area (West Bengal and Bangladesh) has many rivers. So, fish is available in plenty. Moreover, fish is also a source of essential micronutrients. I cannot remember a day when I have not eaten fish. During the week, I cook a variety of fish recipes. The secret ingredient in these dishes is mustard oil. These recipes are traditional and are not spicy. The fish curry or fried fish is usually served with steamed rice, dal and fried vegetables. Shorshere Maach

Ingredients:

Rohu fish - 6 pieces (one can also take hilsa fish) Salt - to taste Turmeric - 1 tsp Green chillies - 4 Mustard seeds - 2 big tbsp Coriander leaves - half a bunch Mustard oil - 5 tbsp Water - 1 cup Cooking time : 30 minutes

Method:

Soak the mustard seeds for some time and grind them to a fine paste with green chillies. Coat the pieces of fish in salt and turmeric. Heat the oil in a kadhai (wok) and add the fish. The fish has to be half-fried. In another pan, heat oil and add the mustard and chilli paste. The masala has to be fried really well, till it releases aroma. Add water and let it simmer for five minutes. Dunk the pieces of fish in the curry and cover it. After 15 minutes the curry is ready to be served. Garnish it with coriander and green chillies.

THRILL OF DRIVING

The GLA 45 may just be the fastest SUV you can buy in India. If you can call it an SUV, says Sirish Chandran

Still, the GLA 45 AMG behaves like a frontwheel-drive hot hatch with herculean grip. This test car also gets an optional sports exhaust that makes it aurally more potent than the CLA 45 AMG. Stick it into sport mode and the exhaust butterfly open its lungs, there are pops and crackles, a bit of burbling, and on full-rev upshifts there’s a sharp crack that is not far removed from a gun shot. Expect prices in the region of `75 lakh ex-showroom, a slight premium to the CLA 45 AMG. Not that it costs any more to make, but SUVs typically command a price premium over sedans. And it is a premium I’d willingly pay. sirish@evo.in

T

he GLA 45 AMG is based on Merc’s versatile MFA platform that underpins the A-, CLA, GLA and B-Class. Mechanically, it is identical to the recently launched CLA 45 AMG with the same wheelbase, but a hatch in place of the boot. Technically a compact crossover, the GLA 45’s driver sits 40mm higher than in the CLA 45, with a corresponding increase in ground clearance. Compared to the regular GLA, the 45 AMG has been lowered by 15mm. You will be relieved to note that unlike the CLA 45, the GLA 45 does not touch over nasty speed-breakers, the improved ground clearance and short wheelbase taking care of matters. AMG have re-engineered the suspension over the standard car and added 19-inch rims in place of the 17s. The all-wheel-drive system (natively front-wheel-drive) can send up to 50 per cent of the torque to the rear. The GLA 45 is rather neat to look at, suitably muscled, carbon-fibred, and AMG’d over your regular GLA, which itself is a neat little pony. The stickers are an optional extra that you will be well advised to do without, makes it look unnecessarily boy-racerish, though it does play a big part in turning heads. The 19-inch rims look great (resist the 20s, you don’t want to ruin the ride), as do the quad exhausts. A wonderful aspect of the GLA 45 AMG is ride quality. Sitting 40mm higher than in the CLA 45 AMG, you don’t have to constantly scan the road for that unmarked speed-breaker than will smash the underside.

Specification: Mercedes GLA 45 AMG

Top: Interior is very similar to the excellent CLA 45 AMG, complete with flat-bottomed Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel and that polarising centre screen

The raised ride height also means a softer, more compliant suspension, which means rather than hopping and skipping, the GLA 45 AMG soaks in the bumps, stays planted, and allows more of the power to be deployed more of the time. The ride is very good making it not only more comfortable, but faster than the CLA 45 AMG. The two-litre engine is the same power plant as in the CLA 45 and kicks out an identical 355bhp and 450Nm of torque, peaking all the way from 2250 to 5000rpm. It does this while meeting Euro 6 emission norms and delivering decent(ish) fuel efficiency (around 7kmpl on a light foot, 4.5kmpl driven like it should be). Engage the brutal Race Start function and 100kmph will come up in a claimed 4.8seconds. That’s just two-tenths slower

than the CLA. As with all AMGs, the GLA 45 is electronically limited to a top speed of 250kmph, but gets there hair-raisingly quickly. Comfort mode does justice to the Mercedes three-pointed star on the nose, while Sport is more in keeping with the AMG badge on the rump. In the real world the GLA 45 AMG is a relentless performer, an absolute joy to drive. Like the CLA 45 AMG, this isn’t a slip-andslide sort of car, more brake-point-and-squirt. On dry tarmac you rarely get close to the skyhigh grip levels; when you do the front end starts to run wide but a lift off the throttle and it tightens its line up nicely. On the road, it is best left in sport mode which sends more power rearwards and can even brake the inside wheel to rotate the car.

ahindra 2Wheelers have been in the automatic scooter arena for a while, but the Gusto is their first all-new scooter. Apart from being sold in the domestic market, the Gusto will also be exported. While most manufacturers are busy shaping new scooters using existing platforms and engines, Mahindra has developed an allnew 110cc engine, chassis and design for the Gusto. The Gusto exudes a very European look, which sets it apart from the current crop of scooters in the market, with a lot of sharp edges that result in a very striking design. The Gusto is the first and only scooter in the country to get a height adjustable seat. The operation is simple, and the seat can either be raised or lowered by means of a lever under the seat. This is a great feature for an automatic scooter, since heights of male and female riders vary a lot in our country, between five and six feet. The height adjust will help the scooter’s users to set the seat according to their size to enable them to place their feet on the ground. To allow the seat height to be adjusted, the Gusto’s seat opens the other way round – from the front towards the back, and even has a little locking mechanism that prevents the seat from falling on to your arms when stowing something under the seat with both hands. The Gusto is also the first scooter to get a car-like key fob, just like their 110cc motorcycle, the Centuro. The folding key fob also gets the ‘find-me’ function that lets you search for the scooter in crowded parking lots with ease, thanks to the car-like sound and flashing turn indicators. In another first, the Gusto also gets LED position lights. The all-new, all-aluminium 110cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine produces 8bhp of power and 9Nm of torque, which are amongst the best in class. The Gusto feels quick off the line, and acceleration is linear, enabling quick progress in a straight line. The engine is refined and feels stress-free even as speeds build up. The Gusto is one of the few scooters in its segment to get 12-inch wheels at both ends and telescopic forks up front, which

make it an able handler. It doesn’t feel jittery around fast corners like the Duro did, thanks to it well sorted suspension set-up. The suspension offers good stability while turning in, and in the corners as well thanks to the set-up, without compromising ride quality. Even with a pillion onboard, the ride quality was pliant without the rear suspension bottoming out, and the scooter had no trouble accelerating. This, coupled with the Gusto’s light weight and smooth engine, should make it an interesting scooter to ride in traffic. We’ve always enjoyed scooters with large wheels and telescopic forks, and the Gusto is the newest

entrant to that club. Not to mention, the head turning design will ensure you stand out in traffic. Mahindra is claiming 63kmpl for the Gusto, on par with what other manufacturers in the segment claim. Expect upwards of 50kmpl in the real world. Two variants of the Gusto are on offer – the Vx is the fully loaded one priced at `49,187, while the Dx version priced at `45,187 makes do without the key fob and a few other features. Both variants offer good value for money, though we certainly recommend the fully loaded version for its features. abhay@evo.in

Throw in a

vacation

at your

wedding

What better way to begin a new life together with loved ones where the wedding then becomes a vacation to die for?

Couples getting married are forsaking the traditional mandap or church settings and opting for exotic wedding venues, such as Kerala backwaters or the historic cities of Europe. Sneha Krishnan tells us more…

I

n olden days, vacations were rare. Kids would await their summer or winter breaks to head out with family, mostly to meet relatives in far-off hometowns and villages. How things have changed.. Today, destinations like Dubai, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia are just some of the places most Indian families prefer visiting during their holidays. Apart from the annual trips, couples take short trips to nearby places to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Holiday trips are a luxury that help us get away from our hectic livess. Exotic destinations are the subject of countless TV tourism advertisements. And this has brought about a different kind of holidaying - destination weddings. Today’s brides and grooms are opting out of the traditional mandap or church settings for more exotic and vacation-like weddings, be it at the beach in tropical Goa or in a historic city of Europe. They do this for a variety of reasons. For some, it’s to cut down on the expenditure of a traditional wedding, and so only close family and friends are present at the wedding. It also saves them the expense of a grand reception. But whatever be the reason, this trend seems to be growing. No matter what your style or budget, there's a destination for every couple.

There is something truly special and intimate about saying our vows in front of our closest friends and family in a breathtaking setting

Deven Dave, director of Fun Designers, a wedding planning company in Chennai, says, “Families these days want to make their weddings a memorable event, with lavish parties, heavy outfits and jewellery, imported gifts and expansive venues. “Everyone is looking to do "My husband something out of the box and and I wanted what better way to do it than a destination wedding. It is a to ensure more compact event where only that we did selected members of the family and close friends of the bride and something groom are invited for. have everything in front of you. From hotels in your budget to offers on fl ight tickets, you have everything at your disposal in just a few clicks. Now people don’t hesitate in planning a trip to any place across the globe. “My husband and I wanted to ensure that we did something different apart from the regular ceremony in a marriage hall. So we decided to take our immediate family down to Kerala and exchanged vows on a boat in the Backwaters at Allepy,” says Krishna Jain. “This way we got to spend some quality time with our in-laws without having to worry about anything else. Our family and friends are still talking about it and waiting for the vow renewal!” Rohit Bhujbal, of Enlace Wedding Events, says, “Most NRI couples come to India to get married, but since they aren’t in touch with their relatives and extended families, they prefer weddings with a small crowd. This fits the budget perfectly if you want a wedding at a 4 star or 5 star resort with a secluded beach and accommodation.” There is something truly special and intimate about saying our vows in front of our closest friends and family in a breathtaking setting which is why more and more couples are opting out of the traditional nuptials. For most people, it’s about enjoying the lush venue and amazing cuisine. ith the festive and the wedding season on, the Mojri is one shoe which has to be there in a man’s wardrobe. Made mostly using vegetabletanned leather. The uppers are made of one piece of leather or textile embroidered and embellished brass fittings.

Mojris in pure leather are very famous in Rajasthan and have been referred to as the Rajasthani Mojri which today can be worn on denims and make for a very different style statement. Usually we think that the wearability of the Mojris is limited to traditional Indian attire, but the newer designs and patterns in leather are making the Mojri a part of everyday wear. Mojari is referred to a man’s closed shoe with an extended curled toe, while the juttis have flat fronts.
