ankim Jain is one of those human beings, who has taken a leap of faith, to do what he believes in. After over two decades of being involved in the video/photography industry, and film-making that included documentaries, travel shows, serials, news, corporate events, and haute-monde weddings, Jain is now working on his debut film called The Exit Point. When the work he was doing seemed to turn somewhat monotonous, Bankim decided it was time to break free. “My working principle is to do the same thing differently. I have experimented with shooting styles, editing and presentation skills, but the basic story line has remained the same. I needed to break free and work on new story lines, he said. The Exit Point is a crime thriller about four people caught in a Catch 22 situation. “The moment of realisation, when I knew that I needed to work on my own story lines of different flavours, a different look and feel, was inspiring enough for me to start the ground-

Gond tribal art takes centrestage in Pune
Songs of the Forest is an exhibition showcasing the works of upcoming and renowned Gond tribal artists
About the curator
Padmaja Shrivastava is an architect by profession, who moved from Pune to Bhopal in 1995. She and her husband Deepak run an architecture firm. Padmaja discovered the folk artists and artisans in the remotest of villages and jungles of Madhya Pradesh, during the course of her work. She took up their cause and became involved in the promotion of tribal art, particularly the Pardhan Gonds of central India. Padmaja has organised and curated Gond art shows across the world.
By Ishani Bose @ishani_bose
The Gond tribals are one of central India’s largest indigenous communities and their art reflects their everyday life. An exhibition titled, ‘Songs of the Forest’, showcasng Gond tribal art has opened today at the Monalisa Kalagram, in Koregaon Park. Gond art that is inspired by folklore, nature and social customs, consists of an extensive and elaborate symmetry of dots and dashes. The Gond artists use colours derived from natural sources such as charcoal, soil, plant sap, leaves, and cow dung. Jagdish Swaminathan is a renowned artist, poet, painter and writer, discovered in the 80s, who took the lead
in the setting up of Bharat Bhavan, a multi-art centre in Bhopal. Swaminathan discovered and spotlighted the artistic gift of 17-year-old Jangarh Singh Shyam, whose creations served to create an awareness and recognition of Gond art. Padmaja Shrivastava, who is the curator of the Gond art exhibition in Pune said, “A couple of teams were sent to the remote villages of Madhya Pradesh to discover the art of

that region. They came upon Jangarh, who was decorating the tribals’ huts in Patangarh. His method and style of using flat paint on infill patterns,
has now come to be known as ‘Jangarh Kalam’. Jangarh used to rope in his cousins and nephews in his artistic endeavours, and over time, they have learnt the skills and techniques to evolve into artist in their own right.” Soon, Jangarh Singh Shyam’s art came to be known far and wide, across the globe. Jangarh’s meteoric rise to fame however is a story with a tragic end, when he committed suicide in 2001. However, Jangarh’s legacy is in safe hands, nurtured and carried forward by a new generation. These artistic descendants have also found recognition and patrons for their art in Europe. The premier auction house of Sothebys introduced the Gond tribals’ contemporary Indian art in 2007. Ra-
jendra Shyam is a well-known Gond artist whose work has been showcased at Nottingham’s New Art Exchange Gallery, London, in 2009. He has collaborated with Venkant Shyam in painting a 70kg fiber glass elephant called ‘Udata Hathi’, as part of the Elephant Parade Mela in London. The Gond art exhibition in the city will showcase the works of six upcoming and established artists. The art works on show are also for sale, at prices ranging from Rs 5000 to Rs 70,000. Renowned artist Santosh Maravi will be conducting a workshop on techniques of Gond art. Those interested in attending the workshop, should register in advance. ishani.bose@goldensparrow.com

alpana Thapar, 54, is a housewife who is probably busier than a working woman, given her lifestyle. She manages her home and hearth, panders to the growing needs of her two daughters, entertains guests that her hubby is constantly bringing home, so life for Kalpana is a whirlwind with no time to ‘exhale’. “I am constantly on the run, juggling my time and energy between home, banks, shopping, entertaining, repairmen, cooking and doctors. I just never have the time to pay attention to my clothes or looks. Most of the time I just grab something out of the cupboard and run. I’d like to look better but honestly the idea of hunting for clothes, make-up, accessories is too daunting and will become another job for me. I want something that is simple and yet chic,” Kalpana says. Is that possible? Amita our stylist and make-up artist takes a long, hard look at Kalpana. “She is fairly attractive, has amazing skin for someone her age and has gorgeous hair. Her lifestyle suggests she needs to have clothes and a style that is convenient and non fussy. She has no time to spend on blow drying her hair or applying layers of make-up.” Amita went clothes hunting with Kalpana. Amita says, “When we met her, she was wearing black and white big checks which she should stay away from as such prints take away from one’s personality.” At Mango, the Spanish brand that’s making waves in India for its cuts, has several outfits that account for ‘the basics’. This is exactly what I wanted for Kalpana, so that she can mix and match these basics with her other outfits. We focussed on plain solid colours and fabrics rather than confusing prints and loud designs. Mango had quite a few outfits for Kalpana to try.” Amita made her try on dresses that succeeded in accentuating her broad hips and some jeans that did the same. “I want something that will slim down the hips and take away the saddle bags so common in us Indians. We finally found one such pair. To this we added an off white flowing top and a camel-beige jacket. This jacket ends just at the hips which is great. If she wore a hip covering jacket it will only accentuate her pear shaped hips, this one ends just at the hips which makes them seem like they are lost somewhere. The neckline can be boat necked, round or wide but never turtle necked for women with big busts,” Amita said. Everyday diamonds and her regular wrist watch made up for the accessories. And Amita chose neutral nude peep toes to complete the ensemble. “Women often avoid wearing high heels which I think is a mistake.

Style In Your Pocket
This is a regular feature that will give you tips on how to make the most of your wallet
W
hether you can afford the moon or have a teensy weensy budget, TGS believes that every body should have what it takes to look great. Style is your birthright! In this inaugural feature we showcase clothes that will fit into a tight budget. Pocket money is generally never large enough to fulfil all your wishes. So what does one do? Take a trip down MG Road aka Main Street and you are sure to find lots of reasonably priced outfits, shoes and accessories. On the pavement near Regal Shoes, there’s a woman who has her wares displayed, including some amazing coloured stones set in fake silver and gold. They can be worn with several kinds of outfits. The trinkets cost from Rs 100 to Rs 300. Shoes? Hey you don’t need Aldo or Jimmy Choo. Just pop into this small little shop Style called Galaxy, that’s more like a ‘khoka’,. This guy has beaded closed shoes that are check really cool. Of course you have to hunt for the good ones. But at Rs 300, who’s complaining? Now for some really old, heritage style. A little known store run by the Pune Zardosti Seva Mandal has the most amazing embroidered kurtas and saris. But if you feel like splurging, check out the black gara embroidered kurta for Rs 1,800 and the pink one for Rs 1,600. This quaint little store also has its own version of the Osho chappals. They are made from a special kind of straw that is oiled. Before wearing them you have to wet them. These chappals also help in keeping aches and pains in the leg at bay according to the storekeeper. Besides, they also look chic and cost Rs Bags to suit your budget, on MG Rd 250 only. Namita Shibad
Because high heels not only add height but also give your posture and gait an interesting swing. Many complain about how it hurts the legs but these days the heels are built to reduce the discomfort to almost nil. Kalpana somehow looked, walked and stood differently with the peep toes, Amita said. Kalpana who never uses make-up, was given a look that matched her lifestyle - no nonsense yet charming. A serum and moisturiser formed the base that gave her a dewy-skin look. “Skin has to be prepped before make-up. This helps the make thereafter applied to ‘adhere’ to the skin. If you use the wrong ‘prep’ you risk either having the make up run all over or give a grey tone,” Amita says. For Kalpana, Amita used a Mac serum, an Aroma oil for moisture infusion, Mineralise foundation and a Dior powder. The eyes were lined by kohl from the centre to the ends on the lower lid. This is to just accentuate her eyes that are deep set. Mid lining helps take away from her ‘set’ and brings out the shape. Eyebrows can make or break a face. Too sparse with no definition will give an expressionless look. Kalpana’s brows were filled with a natural brown that gives the face an ‘expression’.
tgs.feedback@goldensparrow.com
Make-up guidelines by Amita: * A women over 40 must use a moisturiser with a serum and a sun-block * Always keep a soft dewy natural look as against a ‘painted’ one * Always prep and prime your skin with compatible products. For eg, an Ayurvedic moisturiser used under a silica or powder based blusher will end up looking grey, oxidised in professional terms * Eyebrows must have a defined yet soft look * Keep lipstick simple, not too loud and properly matched with your skin colours * Use a bronzer instead of a blusher

arun Sharma cannot use an elevator. He starts to panic at the sight of an elevator. Varun developed this crippling fear of elevators after an accident in an elevator at work. His wife urged Varun to undergo counseling and treatment, that included relaxation exercises and therapy, to erase the memories of the traumatic accident, but his fear of elevators and lifts persists. The buzzing of a mosquito’s wings makes Purnima Shah want to flee the winged menace. She experiences acute paranoia, and she goes about locking all the doors and windows of her house. She also sprays repellents everywhere. It is the hum of the mosquito’s wings that triggers these attacks of paranoia. It began after she had suffered from a near fatal attack of brain malaria (falciparum malaria). Purnima was treated for her disorder, the therapy including sounds of a mosquito buzzing, discussions of the pain and trauma she suffered during the malaria attack. A phobia is an irrational but intense fear of a thing, situation, person or place that does not pose an actual threat. Some uncommon phobias are fear of dolls, where intense anxiety and panic is brought about with the mere thought of a doll. A fear of balloons, fear of buttons, fear of vomiting, fear of touching money, fear of seeing oneself in the mirror (like the character in Agneepath), fear of being in a moving vehicle… the list goes on and on. In the above mentioned phobias, it is possible that the first time the person encountered the doll, or balloon, it scared or frightened him/her, if it suddenly burst and scared the person as a child; or on successive interactions with the balloon, the child’s belief that a balloon is dangerous, could have been reinforced, by
the balloon bursting repeatedly, thereby reinforcing the child’s fear and in time it may become more pervasive and create a great amount of anxiety.
Case 1: Ablutophobia (fear of bathing)
Jaiee Kadam, implantation engineer “I was taken for a vacation to the Konkan. I was barely six years old and the very sight of those huge water bodies scared me. That sight has stuck with me and till date I can’t get over it. I almost drowned in the ocean because I ignored my parents’ warning. So, the feel of water scares me now. I take over two hours to get ready in the morning. I never use the shower because the flow of water terrifies me. I have to push myself into the bathroom. I am dead scared of standing under the shower and bathing. It's like a nightmare."
Case 2: Agyrophobia (fear of crossing the street) Rohit Shrivastava, 26, systems analyst
Rohit never gets out of his house if he does not have a bike or car. He dreads walking on the streets. The reason? “I cannot cross the road. A decade ago I witnessed a tragic accident where a pedestrian was knocked down by a speeding truck. I still have that image fresh in my mind. Since that day I haven’t ventured out without my bike or car. I make it a point to step out during afternoons if I

must. I am so petrified that I don’t mind staying back at work to avoid traffic and speeding cars. I have not consulted a doctor to find a solution. But the image refuses to go away and I just cannot get myself to cross a road.”
Case 3: Achluophobia (fear of darkness)
Geeta S, 45, software professional “From a very young age, I am scared of darkness and spirits. The rented place where my siblings and I spent our childhood was pentagon shaped. The five-pointed star is powerful and most potent in human history. It is the central figure in ritual magic and also the foundation of many other rituals. The symbol is also inextricably linked to black magic and satanic worship. Knowing that, I was in constant fear. Often, late at night I
What is phobia? Phobias may be caused by a traumatic event, such as a car accident. The victim may not be able to sit in a car. For him, it may relate to other vehicles also. Or the feel of the cockroach may give rise to a sensation that is fearful and any similar sensations may cause the same phobia. Psychiatrist Dr Harish Shetty says, "All phobias recover with behaviour therapy. Gradual graded exposure with relaxation exercises works. For example, a person scared of travelling in a train, is first asked to spend time on a railway platform back, then to to get in and get out on the same station, followed by travelling one stop. Some may need medication and yoga alongside.
How to overcome your phobia? Phobias are common, so understanding that you are suffering from a phobia is the first step to overcome it. You can overcome your anxiety and fear, no matter how out of control it feels.
could hear the utensils crashing down from the shelf and doors and windows opening and closing. I was the only one who felt and heard all these. Even today, I still suffer from the phobia. As the evening approaches, I feel the closets as it is dark. After returning home from work, my neighbour has to unlock the front door and check all the rooms and the closets. Once I am assured, that there is no one, I feel safe. I also have a phobia of trees and deep shadows.”
Case 4: Entomophia and Orthinophobia: (fear of insects, birds)
Sandeep and Sanjana Srinivas
“From childhood, the brother sister duo has been nursing phobias. Sandeep, 22, who works at KPMG said, “Fears are irrational but it can be really messy. I have Entomophia or the fear of insects. There is a constant fear of my home being infested with cockroaches, bees, ants and the common housefly. I prefer the windows and doors to be shut all the time. If I see a cockroach under the wash basin or sink, my first reaction is to scream. I fear that I will be bitten by it. Till the time it is gone, I am rooted to the spot. I
Features also have an aversion to lizards.” Sanjana, 17, a student of Class XII has a fear of birds, particularly hens and pigeons. She suffers from Orthinophobia. Sanjana says, “While leaving for school, if I see a hen or a pigeon on the path, I get terrified and emotionally distressed. I refuse to take that road.” Some people who suffer from bird phobia, completely avoid birds. They prefer to stay indoors during the day and venture out only at night. Some others do not even peek out of their windows, fearing that they might see a bird.”
Case 5: Cynophobia (fear of dogs)
Priyanka Ahire, 19, civil engineering student
“I was chased by my cousin's dog twice. He is this huge mongrel and black in colour. He looks ferocious. I have still not been able to get over that incident. I will freak out at the very sight of a pup too. My friends are helping me to get over this phobia by introducing me to small puppies. I have managed to pet one of them. I am hoping to pet a dog at home soon." anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com barnalee.handique@goldensparrow.com
Various phobias: Acarophobia: Fear of itching or of the insects that cause itching Achluophobia: Fear of darkness Aeroacrophobia: Fear of open high places Aichmophobia: Fear of needles or pointed objects Ailurophobia: Fear of cats Alektorophobia: Fear of chickens Arachibutyrophobia: Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth Aulophobia: Fear of flutes Aurophobia: Fear of gold Aviophobia or Aviatophobia: Fear of flying Batophobia: Fear of heights or being close to high buildings Cacophobia: Fear of ugliness Catapedaphobia: Fear of jumping from high and low places Chiroptophobia: Fear of bats Chorophobia: Fear of dancing Chrometophobia or Chrematophobia: Fear of money Clinophobia: Fear of going to bed Clithrophobia or Cleithrophobia: Fear of being enclosed Cymophobia or Kymophobia: Fear of waves or wave-like motions Hemophobia or Hemaphobia or Hematophobia: Fear of blood Rhytiphobia: Fear of getting wrinkles Xylophobia: Fear of wooden objects / Forests Xyrophobia: Fear of razors

I create most of my
music while travelling
What brings you to Pune again? What kind of a connect do you have with the city now? India is one place which I love coming back to. The audience response that I received in Pune, the last time I visited, was marvellous. To witness a whole bunch of people going crazy with your music and showering your with their endless love gives you the inspiration to keep doing better.
David Guetta who is about to perform for the second time in Pune at Enchanted Valley Carnival (EVC), Aamby Valley on December 19 and 20, says the large crowds inspire him to perform
head somewhere else, so then I go to blogs and YouTube and websites and I try to find out about new technology and new plug-ins from brands that I love. I never go to sleep before 6:00 am. Even If I want to, I can’t. The books that I read are manuals for plug-ins and software. I make music as I travel.
Music is integral to you. The chartbusters and audience response only shows how you live and breathe music. To what extent is it a part of your routine? Every day is a new beginning. There are so many things around that inspire different ways to make music. It connects me to the world. I don’t do this for the money, I don’t do it for record sales, I don’t really care about that, I just want to make music. My routine is fly, play, sleep, record. My centre is the music I am making; when I see people together wherever it is on the planet, that we connect, that’s what keeps my heart beating.
Has travelling influenced your music? You are right; I’m pretty much travelling most of the time. Since I’m seldom at one place, a major chunk of the music I create is done when I’m on the road. My studio is a laptop. I do have studios in the different places where I live whether it’s Ibiza, Paris or London. But what happens is when you start out, you do a lot of work in the studio, and then you say “ok, when I’m on the road I’m going to have a smaller setup so I ats can do sketches and then finish them n make be a c I w o n , in the studio.” Later you realise that I k ple dance o e p e k a you’re spending more and more time on that m hallenge the road, and less time in the studio, so now the c o s things become a lot more complicated. e the best t a e r c o t is That’s why I never change my setup from usic and the road to the studio; it’s always the possible m timeless. same. It’s a different way to make music, s that are but for me, I love it, because it’s more song etta -David Gu connected to the world. Do you tweak your music according to the country you perform in? I have to explain to you how I live. I don’t do anything else than touring or making music. A lot of people might think this is very pathetic, but it makes me very happy. I don’t watch TV, I don’t read books. I am in a continuous loop. I wake up in my hotel room, and start to produce, and then when it’s the evening I take a plane, where I keep on producing, and then I arrive in a hotel; I have dinner, I go perform, then I come back. So sometimes I produce again, or sometimes my ears are tired because of the show and then I want to get my
Does a live performance and a huge crowd, like the one which is expected at your upcoming performance, inspire you to perform tirelessly? A festival is more like a concert, whereas when I play in a club it’s a really longer set. It’s really like back to my roots when I was a resident DJ. When I do this kind of show it’s a lot of my own music and if I play in a club I might try something experimental. Well, you know, when you play to 20,000 people or 50,000 people, obviously they want to hear your records. It’s more like a show, like a concert. That’s the idea. You know, kids come to see me in the same way that their parents would go to see a rock concert. Of course I’m going to play my big hits, but I’m also going to play some new beats that are crazier. Right now, because it’s become such an industry, it’s more about delivering an amazing show. People go to see our shows in the way they would go to see a rock band. So we deliver a show that is well planned out with effects and visuals. When it’s a concert, it’s more like a rock band or pop act, and people want to hear the music of that artist only. How different it is from playing in a club? You can’t compare this to a club where people really only come to hear new music. That’s why it’s so important for me to keep on playing in clubs because this is where I get my inspiration and this is where I can try out my new tracks. That’s what I love so much about our culture, people that are going clubbing; they are not looking for what they hear on the radio. They want to hear the new stuff; they want to hear the new sounds. I don’t prepare pre-recorded mixes or anything, but it’s always going to be kind of the same structure at a concert. When I play in the club, I have no idea what I’m going to play, at all, and it’s a total freedom. What are you working on next? I just launched my sixth album. It’s more organic and one of my most personal and challenging albums till date. It is
completely song-based. There are featured artists of course, but none that you’d expect with me, and really it’s just completely different from anything I’ve done before. That’s why it has taken almost three years. It has different production styles and featured artists. The first single “Lovers on the Sun (featuring Sam Martin),” was produced with Avicii, and features some of the electro-country vibe that Avicii has become known for. It’s a record I produced together with Avicii and my original influence for the track was Spaghetti Western movies. So it is all about pushing the envelope? I just wanted to push myself to the maximum, and then play it others. I know I can make beats that make people dance, so now the challenge is to create the best possible music and songs that are timeless. yashdaiv@gmail.com
