Stage is still their first love
Popular films and scripts to their credit have not stopped these talented actors-directors from continuing to do theatre. Anjali Shetty finds out TGS News Service
They are known as one of the most sought-after actors-directors-writers in Pune among the younger lot. Despite making local, regional and Bollywood films they have not forgotten their first step on the stage. For many it is the humble nature and ground reality of theatre that make them come back to the stage for more. Actor-director Aalok Rajwade of critically-acclaimed Marathi film Vihir and member of Aasakta and Natak Company has starred in many films and continues to do so. But, over the years, his love for the stage has only bloomed and deepened.
“I am doing films regularly but theatre wins hands down. It keeps me grounded because of its simplicity and direct contact with the audience. For example, the stage is set and later brought down right in front of you after the play thus showing us the reality. There is no show off and the instant feedback from the audience is what helps every performer,” says Aalok. Playwright and scriptwriter Dharmakirti Sumant disagrees that there is any kind of favourable medium or love for a single platform. “I don’t look at it as films or plays. For me, telling a story is important. I do theatre because I want to do it. I don’t
have an agenda or aim to achieve.” Actor Amey Wagh is thrilled that theatre has again started gaining appreciation from families and students. “Honestly, technology has made film-making easy sometimes even at the cost of loss of creativity but theatre is just the opposite.”

usician Bob Marley once said, “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” On World Music Day, these words hold true among young talented musicians from the city who have been pursuing their passion and hobby. In a candid chat, they reveal their musical journey so far and future plans. Music by chance: Abhishek Kate and Datta Gunjal, music programmers, Ada Productions As a child, Abhishek Kate would sing aloud in the bathroom and dance in front of the mirror when alone at home. A childhood fascination turned out to be Abhishek’s strength over the years. A career in music was not something his family appreciated but this did not stop Abhishek from pursuing it even after a degree in aeronautical engineering. “I have not learnt music formally neither did I receive any training in music arrangement
or programming. The only thing that worked in my favour was my engineering background,” shares Abhishek, who currently operates through Ada Productions with his partner Datta Gunjal. According to Abhishek, education in every field is a must followed by constant updating of skills. “My computer skills come in handy with the digitalisation of music. With new technologies coming, I know I have an upper hand and can grasp easily even if I am just a few years old in the industry,” adds Abhishek, who advises young minds to take up what excites them rather than blindly following the herd. An ardent fan of Gulzar and Guru Thakur, he hopes lyrics in today’s songs retain their original place and sensibility. It is the role of the composer to ensure the lyrics strike a chord with the audience and a song stays in their minds forever. “Music needs to get back its charm and novelty. Today, it is seen as a money-minting business where songs are churned out just to be one-time hits. We intend to change this,” says Abhishek.

Film: Humshakals Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Riteish Deshmukh, Ram Kapoor, Tamannah, Esha Gupta, Bipasha Basu Director: Sajid Khan
TGS News Service | Deepanjana Pal Humshakals begins with Saif Ali Khan pretending to be an awful stand up comedian with profoundly pathetic jokes. His set isn’t failing only because he’s telling jokes in Hindi at a comedy club in London. The jokes are genuinely bad. Technically, that’s a good beginning for a film that’s supposed to be a ribtickler. Set the bar low and things can only get better. Unfortunately, in Humshakals the jokes don’t improve. The film’s climax is set in Khan’s version of the British House of Commons, which isn’t a parliament but a tacky ballroom with a green arch that has “House of Commons” written on it. If you’ve just applied for a British visa and don’t get it, blame it on Khan. Between what he’s reduced the House of Commons to — there’s a Prince Charles impersonator in the mix — the mockery he’s made of the mental health care system and the awful choreography that the British extras have to dance to in the film, Humshakals is a disaster for our relations with Britain. In all fairness, you can’t complain about lapses in accuracy while watching a Sajid Khan film.
There’s no reason for people to be dressed in tuxedos and evening gowns at the House of Commons, just as there’s no logical explanation for why a private company would conduct its board meeting in Britain’s lower house of Parliament. If you start questioning the logic and factual accuracy of Humshakals, you’ll need valium instead of popcorn to survive the 159 minutes of the film. Because in Khan’s world, there is such a thing called “stage three, OCD” which involves patients flying into a murderous rage when someone sneezes around them. How does one calm such a patient down? By giving him a lollipop. Dwarves, the regular target of what Khan imagines is wit, chomp down on regular sized men’s genital areas just because their height makes this convenient. Here, women wear absurdly short, tight dresses; comas can be cured in seconds; cocaine has the same consistency as atta; and Saif Ali Khan is 30 years old. Humshakals’ central problem isn’t the lack of realism, but that it isn’t funny. Saif Ali Khan and Riteish Deshmukh play Ashok and Kumar,

oH two men about town. Sajid Khan’s idea of a joke is to have Riteish Deshmukh pretend he’s a dog and dry hump an actor’s leg. It’s all painful to watch. Apparently Sajid Khan spent months writing the script of Humshakals. The only actor who emerges with some grace out of the ungainly mess that is Humshakal is Riteish Deshmukh. The script he’s given doesn’t allow him to be genuinely funny, but he manages to eke out a few microseconds of humour In contrast Saif Ali Khan, the star of the film, is painfully awkward and entirely out of place in Sajid Khan’s world. Humshakals was probably Saif ’s attempt at scoring a ‘massy’ blockbuster the way actors like Akshay Kumar have, but no matter how how much he woofs, dresses up as a woman and makes faces, Saif is not able to fit into the
mould of stupidity that Sajid Khan has created for him. If you’re thinking of watching Humshakals, here’s a suggestion. Don’t do it. There are better things you can do with your money and
being swallowed alive by a python is less excruciating than watching Sajid Khan’s latest attempt at making a movie. By special arrangement with firstpost.com
It’s enjoyable, but cloyingly formulaic Film: Chef Cast: Jon Favreau, Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo, Scarlett Johansson, Dustin Hoffman, Oliver Platt, Bobby Cannavale, Amy Sedaris, Emjay Anthony, Robert Downey Jr. Director: Jon Favreau
Troy Ribeiro Writer-director Jon Favreau’s indie film “Chef ” is a light hearted film that revolves around the life of a chef, who is passionate about his culinary art. The narration also interlaces the chef ’s personal relationships and educates viewers about the impact of the social media marketing in the current scenario. Carl Casper (Jon Favreau), the celebrity chef of a prestigious LA restaurant owned by Riva (Dustin Hoffman), is all excited and goes out of his way to prepare an exciting menu for a prominent reviewer and critic Ramsey Michel (Oliver Platt), who is coming to the restaurant for dinner. But unfortunately for him, Riva
forbids him from altering the restaurant’s popular menu and Ramsey in his on-line review trashes Carl by writing, “damn mean shit” about him. With the behind-the-kitchen scenes, the film beautifully portrays how heartbreaking and tough the restaurant business is. It reveals how real cooks use cooking as an artistic and creative outlet. Like a true artist, the chef too wants appreciation when he creates something that he has put his heart and soul into. And the real dampener is when he is constantly told to play it safe or when food critics criticise merely for the sake of finding faults. Favreau’s script is written from the bottom of his heart and he candidly portrays

Casper through his writing and performance. Sofia Vergara with her husky seductive voice is appealing; she plays the concerned mother and encouraging partner with ease. Emjay Anthony as the kid is endearing and spontaneous. So is John Leguizamo as Martin Casper’s loyal assistant. Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson as Molly the restaurant hostess were two characters, which were too short to sink in. Perhaps any actor could have essayed those roles. Dustin Hoffman and Bobby Cannavale as the sous-chef are wasted. The production quality of the film is good and Kramer Morgenthau’s camera work is flawless. Some of the food images are so brilliantly captured that you instantaneously crave for food. Also, wide-angle scenic shots are picture-postcard like, making you want to be in Miami. IANS

he Corolla is not only the best selling automotive nameplate ever, adorning the back sides of over 40 million cars in 154 countries since its debut in 1966, but is also the world’s best-selling car clocking nearly 11 lakh units in 2013. Those are crazy numbers that this eleventh generation Corolla Altis will no doubt add to.
style. It’s all nicely creased origami and an expressive face with mandatory lashings of chrome. At least on the styling front, nobody will accuse the Corolla of being boring anymore. The updates are even heavier on the inside; with the top of the dash in a smart black, the Corolla now sports a cabin that could even be called sporty. The plastics also feel upmarket,

The 11th generation Altis rides on an updated platform that is a little longer and wider, while the spring and damper ratings have been stiffened up to tighten the dynamics. On the road you can now feel a slight firm edge to the damping, resulting in poised road manners and none of
the sogginess of the earlier Corolla. Push it hard and the Corolla won’t light the fires of an enthusiast but neither will it pour cold water over them, and that’s a welcome change. It offers a decent driving experience allied to wonderful ride quality and comfort which, to be fair, is what Corolla owners expect from their cars. Engines are carried over from the earlier Alits and that includes the 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol that makes 138bhp and 173Nm of torque. It can be had with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed CVT with steering wheel paddle shifters on the topend version. The Altis doesn’t feel particularly keen to be pushed hard; hustle it and it runs out of breath, actually feeling slower than the 0-100kmph time of 11.5 seconds. It will go on to a top speed of 180kmph. The diesel is the same 1.4-litre unit that develops just 88bhp. It won’t come as a surprise that the Altis feels underpowered and has to be really caned to get to 100kmph in around 14 seconds. The diesel only gets a manual transmission, Toyota

The Corolla has a wellearned reputation for sheer indestructability. It’s that famed quality and reliability that has made it the best selling car in the world, giving 1300 customers enough confidence to prebook the new Altis even before prices were announced and we have no doubt that they will all be very happy with their choice.

arley-Davidson’s first all-new motorcycle in thirteen years has to be special. But what makes the Street 750 even more special is that it is the first Harley to be manufactured in India, including the engine, and is the brand’s most affordable motorcycle at ` 4.1 lakh. And contrary to the assumptions of many, it feels like a true Harley. The design is typical of Harley-Davidsons with the low stance and raked-out profi le, and it looks simple yet attractive. The engine is the Street 750’s highlight – it is their smallest yet, but entirely modern, employing liquid-cooling, unlike most Harleys, and extremely refined. It is also surprisingly responsive and offers quick acceleration from the word go. The slick six-speed gearbox offers well-spaced ratios which make it a delight in the city and on open highways. a. Have a different coloured furniture unit, seating and curtains. Avoid the use of a false ceiling and colour the top slab white to make the room appear bigger. b. For the living space choose a contemporary style, pick a wall and highlight it with plain or textured paint. It will act as a space breaker. The remaining walls should be painted with a lighter shade in a matching or contrasting colour of the highlighter. c. If the kitchen is properly lit then dark shades should be used which keep the walls clean. Even the type of paint matters. For your kitchen use washable paints.
