Movie marathon for holiday weekend

Anil Zankar of FTII recommends his pick and movies for the long weekend By Prachi Bari @prachibari

I

t’s the long weekend. Do you want to spend it stuck in serpentine traffic to Lonavla? Or wait for hours for a table at your favourite restaurant? Here’s TGS Life’s suggestion: Call you friends, order in food and get cozy in front of the TV. Anil Zankar, professor of film appreciation at Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and Whistling Woods International Film School, suggests a movie marathon on Independence day to Navroze weekend. Here are For film the movies he has in mind.

buffs

Bhuvan Shome This delightful satire launched the new wave in Indian Cinema in 1969. The protagonist Bhuvan Shome, played by Utpal Dutt, is a hardboiled bureaucrat. He is a top-ranking officer

in the Indian Railways, a ‘vishuddh’ Bengali and really a remnant of the Raj. He visits rural India for an outing and finds himself hopelessly out of place and control. The film is full of ironic and hilarious situations caused by India (Shomesahib) meeting Bharat. The latter is represented by characters such as Gauri (Suhasini Mulay) and her husband (Sadhu Meher), a train ticket examiner, who views his punishment transfer as an opportunity to make more money on the side. Checkpoint We have been reading accounts of the unilateral war at Gaza these days, but this documentary shot during ‘peace time’ gives one an insight into how difficult, degraded the lives of the Palestinians have become. Checkpoint is a documentary film showing the everyday interaction between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian civilians at several of the regions Israel Defense Forces checkpoints. The film has English sub-titles and has been shot by Israeli film-maker Yoav Shamir. It is completely cinema vérité, meaning nothing is staged. Raw incidents have been captured over a period of two years and eight to ten of them find place in this film. This film defines State Terrorism through depiction of everyday life.

The Circus This is one of Charlie Chaplin’s masterpieces, where he plays a circus clown. He is, as per usual, the quintessential outsider; the familiar tramp without home and hearth and, as always, in search of romance. The film is written and directed by Chaplin, and when the sound version came out, he sang the title song. The mirror maze, magician, lion cage and the trapeze sequences in the film are simply immortal. The Patience Stone This film is based on director Atia Rahimi’s own novel. It depicts the extraordinary situation of a woman in Afghanistan, who lives with her neither-dead-nor-alive husband in a dilapidated house. She keeps talking to her comatose husband, who cannot respond, and thus becomes the passion stone of the Persian my t holog y. The mythical stone has the perseverance of listening to someone’s grief until it cracks. Afghanistan may have stereotypical telev ision-news value to the outside world, but set amidst the stark realities of war and Taliban,

the film rises to poetic dimensions. The unexpected, surreal ending of the film belies the difference between myth and fact. My Fair Lady There are many reasons for recommending this delightful musical full of old world charm. Firstly, it is based upon G.B Shaw’s delightful play Pygmalion. Secondly, it is one of the better musicals that Hollywood has produced. Thirdly, it has great performances by Audrey Hepburn, Rex Harrison, Stanley Holloway and others. Fourthly, I recommend it for the lovely music and famous songs. And finally, yes to feel the joy of English language! For, we have done to English in India what our municipal corporations have done to the roads in our cities. prachibari@gmail.com

Patriotism on your plate This Independence Day, city chefs whip up tricolour-inspired dishes @shetty_anjali

Bring out the chef in you this long weekend and add a dash of patriotism to it. City chefs talk about tricolour influence in their cooking style. Tri-coloured fettuccine with Crabmeat: Manav Koul, executive chef, Hyatt Regency, Pune Cooking is nothing less than an art form. The appeal of a dish lies not only in the taste, look and aroma, but in its colours as well. Due to the diversity of its climate, India is home to a variety of cuisines that incorporate a colourful range of ingredients and spices. Therefore, Indian food rich in colours makes for a vibrant palate visually. The three colours of the Indian flag stand out due to their vivacity and their ability to blend across a variety of cuisines, be it North Indian or South. We interpreted them as a tricoloured fettuccine with crabmeat. The speciality of the dish is in the fine balance of flavours that come in the colours of the Indian flag. Recipe Ingredients: Blanched fettuccine Crab meat sauce 4 tomatoes 5-6 basil leaves 1 pod crushed garlic 1 ml olive oil 50 gm crab meat 5 cherry tomatoes Cracked black pepper to taste Salt to taste

Paneer Tirang

Method: Blanch the tomatoes and chop basil. Heat olive oil in a pan and sauté the garlic. Add tomatoes and chopped basil. Blend together and add crab meat and cherry tomatoes. Stir till crab meat is cooked. Season with salt and pepper as per taste and toss in blanched fettuccine. Drizzle with olive oil before serving. Aged cheddar and citrus fruit mélange Raviraj Guruju, executive chef at Lavasa International Convention Centre & Mercure, Lavasa Independence Day celebrates the freedom of expression of every individual in the world’s biggest democracy. We capture this freedom through our culinary offerings. Each vivacious colour of the flag has a significance and provides a culinary enthusiast a palette for expressing the unity and diversity of our nation. We focused our energies to create dishes that look quite novel, but involve simple, rustic and earthy ingredients. The results are international recipes with local produce of the hill city. Paneer Tirang: Amit Singh, chef at Slathia, Keys Hotels, Pimpri The three colours of the Indian national flag represent different virtues of the Indian. Being a hardcore patriot myself, we have created a symbol of excellence for our taste buds called Paneer Tirang. The dish is a tri-coloured paneer sandwich skewered together and served in a rich Mughlai gravy. The colours of the flag can also be interpreted as our personal values as service providers. The white in the paneer represents ‘purity’ of our heart. Saffron is for our cheerful smile as we serve food and the reaction we always get from our guests. Our concern for our guests’ health is symbolised by green. This we demonstrate by choosing the best ingredients and being hygienic to ensure a safe, healthy and tasty Paneer Tirang.

Tricoloured fettuccine with Crabmeat

Basil and Orange Pana cotta Mayur Gadkari, chef, Trois Kitchen & Bar, Kalyaninagar The dish I choose to make for Independence Day to represent out tricolour is Basil and Orange Panacotta. It has the perfect balance of flavours that makes your tastebuds tingle — zesty orange jelly with creamy basil. This dessert is garnished with a sprig of mint. White is the canvas of my plate on which I expressive my creativity. Recipe: Basil mixture: 350 gm fresh cream 150 ml milk 150 gm sugar 20 gm basil leaves Va n i l l a extract only for flavor Ready to make jelly mix Method: Mix milk, cream and the sugar to a saucepan. As this mixture comes up to the boil, add the basil leaves. Bring to the boil and then remove from the heat and allow to infuse for a couple of minutes. Place the mixture in a blender and blitz until smooth. Add the softened gelatine leaves to the mixture and stir to dissolve. Pass the mixture through a fine sieve and keep aside. Arrange jelly and mixture to get alternate colours in moulds. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

National integration in a handi: Yogesh Naik, corporate chef, Atlantis World Cuisine and Bar I have always thought of innovative ways of presenting my nation on a plate. This time, I have come up with a perfect signature dish. It brings together all the elements of India — an authentic chicken handi with thick rich gravy served with idlis, appams and dosas. The dishes from the northern part of the country are famous for the variety of spices that go into them. I chose chicken cooked in a variety of traditional spices and herbs from different parts of the country. The Bhoot jolokia chillies, known for their colour and spiciness, come from the Northeast; coconut comes from central India, while the spice javetri comes from coastal India; the spices cinnamon and cardamon are from Tamil Nadu; stone flower and nutmeg from Southern part of India. The dish needs three different types of masalas: a wet paste of dry coconut, onion, ginger, garlic, red chillies and curd; a dry one comprising stone flower, clove, black pepper, green cardamoms, nutmeg and javetri; and a third, secret one which is my speciality! The chicken has to be marinated and slow-cooked in a handi on coals. The gravy comes from chicken stock extracted after boiling the bones for seven to eight hours and left overnight. We serve it garnished with ginger slivers and chopped coriander, accompanied by appam, idli, dosa or rice.

The next big Idea The Audi A3 is far more than the sum of its parts, says Tushar Burman

T

he Audi A3 has been well received across the world and was recently awarded ‘World Car Of The Year 2014’. Clearly, it has some lofty expectations to meet. It’s a nascent segment, this: Mercedes has been successful in the affordable luxury segment with their A- and B-Class hatches. Audi themselves have the top-selling Q3 S, a sporty compact SUV with rationalised equipmentand a sweet price. The A3 will be the first sedan entrant in this segment. The A3 comes with two engine options – the venerable 2.0 TDI and the zippy 1.8 TSI petrol, both mated to a six-speed S Tronic dual-clutch transmission. There are four diesel and one petrol variant and the one we drove across Udaipur was decently equipped. The 2.0 TDI comes in the 141bhp spec, just like the Skoda Octavia. Truth be told, the Skoda is more fun with its perfectly matched manual gearbox, but the A3 is deceptively quick on the highway. First impressions are familiar: the layout mirrors other VW group cars. Ergonomics are good and there’s a surprising amount of space in the driver footwell. Head room is a bit tight. Seats are comfortable but not memorable, and dressed in leather. The rest of the cabin feels plush but not ostentatious. The dash is upholstered in soft leatherette, there’s a nice texture to the centre console plastic and there’s a bit of drama with the MMI screen rising out of the dash when you switch the ignition on. The more premium variant adds a touch display as well as a colour multifunction display. Rear seat space, however, is lacking. With the front driver or passenger seat adjusted

for my 5’9” frame, the rear passengers had little wriggle room. A fifth passenger in the middle would be even worse off, courtesy the pronounced transmission tunnel that’s capable of housing a Quattro system. The glasshouse is airy, however and visibility is excellent. On the go, the Audi A3 strikes a balance between luxury and sporting intent. Our S Line package on the test car indicated 17” alloys with relatively low profile tyres, but ride quality was excellent. I was surprised at how well it rode across smooth and rough roads alike. Suspension is not adjustable, but is well tuned. There is some trade-off in body roll, but the comfort is worth it. Steering is typical of most cars these days – light and lacking feel. It’s easy to manipulate in the city and secure on the highway, so about par for the course. When you have the chance to sample tripledigit speeds, the car squats on its haunches and it’s a pleasure holding it through long, fast sweepers. If this car came with Quattro in India, you’d have to pry me off the wheel. Which leads us to the drivetrain: it’s frontwheel drive like most Audis, so don’t expect it to drift. The all-wheel drive version also hasn’t been announced for India just yet. Paired with the seamless S Tronic gearbox, progress is brisk but measured. As usual, I left it in sport mode for the most part, which holds revs a bit longer and sharpens up shifts nicely. Still, the general impression I got is of a package tuned more for luxury and comfort than enthusiastic driving. NVH is well-controlled and the cabin allows quiet conversation at highway speeds. The A3’s external visage is impressive. It’s dynamic looking while standing still, with just

the right amount of flair. There’s an integrated bootlid spoiler, those rakish family headlamps with obligatory LED DRLs and a shoulder line that runs from tip to tip accentuating the car’s otherwise modest length. I’d go as far as to say that the sedan looks better than the hatch it is based on. A panoramic sunroof Verdict is optional and the total package is muscular and purposeful. The 17” alloys add much to + Ride quality, the visual; with smaller wheels, it looks more style, killer price ordinary. - Rear space is lacking, Pricing, as announced, is killer. Starting only one petrol variant at `24 lakh for the base diesel, the A3 is the TOD rating cheapest way to park a German luxury sedan in your driveway. At this point, ;;;34 it’s the only one in its segment, Specification: and with the Indian buyers’ penchant for vehicles with boots, AUDI A3 Sedan we think the A3 will make a very Engine attractive option. Just look at In-line 4cyl, 1798cc turbo-petrol/ 1968cc the number of A- and B-Class turbo-diesel Mercedes on the streets and Transmission you’ll have to agree that the 7 speed DGS/ 6-speed manual entry-level luxury segment is Power poised for impressive growth. 177bhp @ 5100rpm/ 141bhp @ 3500rpm The A3 offers a unique package Torque for potential buyers: a compact 250Nm @ 1250rpm/ 320Nm @ 1750rpm sedan with a great drivetrain, Weight good equipment, brand cachet 1370kg /1390kg and a large, practical boot. The 0-100kmph package straddles aspiration and 7.3sec/8.6sec (claimed) accessibility quite nicely, and Top speed until Mercedes launches the non235kmph/ 224kmph AMG versions of the CLA, will Price `30.0/ `24.0-33.8 lakh remain exclusive to Audi. Power to the commuter

THRILL OF DRIVING

Bajaj Auto has launched the Discover 150, its most powerful commuter yet. Abhay Verma goes for a ride

PHOTOGRAPHy: gaurav s thombre

he Discover has been Bajaj Auto’s workhorse in the all-important commuter segment since it was launched in 2004. A decade later the Discover continues to soldier on, thanks to Bajaj updating the motorcycle regularly apart from offering it across various price points and engine displacements. The newest Discover, the 150, is the new flagship of the family and Bajaj is offering the bike with a half fairing as well as the same bikini fairing as before. The idea is to entice buyers with more performance without sacrificing efficiency in a sportier package. The half fairing is a first for the Discover, but the rest of the motorcycle isn’t different from the other Discovers. The engine is a stroked-out version of the current Discover 125’s air-cooled single-cylinder unit, while the frame and cycle parts are from the Discover 125ST that was sold until recently. The Discover 100M and 125M however use a smaller wheelbase. The 150F is a looker thanks to its half fairing. It promises to be a cut above the average commuter, and is sure to catch the fancy of those wanting a motorcycle with a fairing, without the need to shell out a fortune or sacrifice comfort and efficiency. The fairing gels with the rest of the motorcycle perfectly, and looks pleasing from most angles. The 150S looks just like the smaller Discovers as the styling is identical, and the only differentiator is the 150S badging. Bajaj is known for offering customers more for less, and most of its products boast of newer technologies compared to the competition, as is also the case with the Discover 150. It gets a 240mm petal disc up front (standard on the 150F, optional on the naked 150S), a part digital dash, a gascharged monoshock and 100mm wide tyre at the rear. These features are usually found on more expensive motorcycles, but Bajaj has made a habit of offering newer technology on the Discovers which has worked in its favour. The wheelbase of the Discover 150 is the longest in its class, while the gas-charged monoshock aids stability and comfort. Bajaj has been working continually towards reducing friction losses and making the engine smoother and the 150’s engine feels extremely refined. In fact, it is difficult to make out whether the engine is running or not at idle. The dash is just like the other Discovers, with a large analogue speedometer, tell tale lights and the digital readouts. The 150F gets a digital fuel gauge while the 150S gets a conventional one. Also, the 150F gets a LED stop light at the rear which the 150S doesn’t. With a kerb weight of 130kg for the naked and 132kg for the faired version, the Discover 150 feels quick given its power output of 14.3bhp and 12.75Nm of torque. The engine feels punchy through the midrange and there’s plenty of go through the gears. The Discover 150 should accelerate to 60kmph from standstill in just over 5 seconds which is quick, while claimed top speed is 110kmph. It feels light on its feet and is quick to make directional changes in traffic. It enjoys being flicked, and riders should feel confident leaning into fast corners thanks to its balanced chassis and MRF Zapper tyres. The engine feels torquey throughout its rev range, which makes overtaking easy without the need to downshift. Vibrations creep in through the footpegs after 60kmph though, rising steadily to a buzz as you go faster. The

TGS LIFE

engine is refined, but the damping could be better to address the issue. Bajaj is claiming an efficiency of 72kmpl for the Discover 150 but in the real world we expect it to deliver about 50-55kmpl with its four-valve set-up, which is slightly higher than the average 150cc motorcycle. Pricing begins from `51,720 ex-showroom, Pune for the drum brake equipped 150S, while the disc brake equipped 150S retails at `54,725. The 150F which gets the disc brake as standard costs `58,739, making it a good value proposition. This, especially when you consider that the Discover 150S costs less than some of the 125s on sale in the Specification: country, not to mention, almost all Bajaj Discover 150S/F 150cc motorcycles. Engine With the Discover Single-cylinder, 4-stroke, 150, Bajaj has set 144.8cc the cat amongst the Transmission pigeons, since it offers 5-speed better performance Power and similar efficiency 14.3bhp @ 8500rpm as most 125s. It is Torque an able handler and 12.75Nm @ 6500rpm promises to offer the Weight thrill of riding to 132kg those who want that 0-100kmph extra performance NA without sacrificing Verdict Top speed comfort. What’s more, + Linear power NA the engine is smooth delivery, design, Price and refined, and offers `54,725/`58,739 handling brisk performance (ex-showroom, Pune) - Seat feels firm, no whenever needed. It is thus a great buy in the tachometer commuter segment, TOD rating given its mix of sportiness and comfort in an ;;;$2 attractive, affordable package. abhay@evo.in

It could be a beloved holiday place, or a city; but more likely, it’s a place in your home which you visit with the perfectly-brewed tea. Police force). I also go for yoga, Taekwondo and kickboxing. A good workout always lifts my spirits. Today, Stretch Gym at Wanawadi is my favourite space. When I am tired, stressed or depressed, I head straight to the gym. My favourite nook is from where I can watch birds building nest on the bamboo grove while I work out. Watching the busy birds gives me immense happiness and inner peace. A couple of hours in the gym not only burns calories, but also rejuvenates me. Meeting other people there brings me out of my melancholic state. It helps me to take life positively and towards a new beginning.

Because i’m happy

The lyrics of some songs are so beautiful and touching that they transport me to a different world. I love trying new recipes

Sonam Mahajan, real estate professional, 28, Salunke Vihar

Even today, when the sun shines crisply on a winter morning, I am transported to the happy place where I grew up in Jammu. I had made a nest in our tiny attic, where my mother used to store pickles and old trunks. The sun would stream through the old window and warm the room. The wind ruffled the leaves of the nearby apple tree. When the school broke for winter holidays, I would spend entire days sprawled on the woven straw mat, surrounded by stuffed cushions, reading my favourite comics and books. The reading was punctuated by stuffed cheese parathas with endless cups of tea with milk and sugar. It was a place where I used to laugh, cry and spin improbable dreams. No other space can compare to my nest in the attic. These days, driving around in my car comes close. I love listening to music while driving. The lyrics of some songs are so beautiful and touching that they transport me to a different world. I love trying new recipes. In other times, I visit the various shopping malls in the city, going through each store, picking up whatever I like. And there is also my favourite corner at Barista on MG road, where I can curl up with a magazine and a strong cup of coffee when I need some downtime. The wide windows provide a view of the sidewalks, where people stroll or swagger in a colourful pedestrian parade.

Jeetu Chavan, sports trainer, 30, Wanawadi In my college days in Ahmedabad, I found refuge under the big banyan tree in the central courtyard. I found a special joy in that space. I would sit there for hours, reading and making notes when the exams were close. When I wasn’t in a mood to study, I would choose an old classic to read. Godfather by Mario Puzo was my favourite novel during those days. My attention would wander sometimes from the printed pages to the city… its broad streets and green squares, the silver glint that is the river and the bridges that cross it. As the years passed, I found other happy places where I could go when I was ebullient or down in the dumps. But I still read Godfather whenever I can; it has become my Bible. On other days, I go to play basketball at SRPF (State Reserve

in the fire, its red hot smouldering cheerfulness, the smell of tobacco, beer and the filmy layer that frying chips left in the air.

Sarfaraz Merchant, businessman, 29, M.G Road In different stages of my life, I have had several happy places. These spaces are personal islands where I spend time with myself. They help me think and reflect on my life and take decisions. Reading a good novel, listening to music and playing computer games also gives me happiness. Going for a jog in the streets gears me up for the day. Especially in the early morning, when the sun kisses the tree tops and envelops the entire earth. My favourite book Many Lives, Many Masters by Dr Brian Weiss helps me look at life positively. It initiated me into spirituality and I have read it many times since I first bought it. I go through it even now when I am down. It helps me loosen up and calm down. At present, my geographical happy space is the gulmohar-fringed terrace of my farmhouse at Sinhagad. This is the venue for many an impromptu parties; a place where my friends gather for a barbeque and beer. Over the spitting coals, the chicken roasted while the stars formed a canopy and a soft breeze My happy lulled our senses. This was the vantage point from where space is the I first fell in love with the gulmoharcity’s winter, with its swirling mysterious fog enveloping fringed everything on its wake. Meditation helps me to take a breather from my hectic life

I love gardening and used to lovingly tend to a garden in our farmhouse in the Konkan. I lived on a rocky hillside, with rough, uneven ground. There were long, long streams of raised beds behind my house, and more lining the land down the long front slope. It took a lot of work to maintain them, but were a great joy to me. In summer, there would be a flood of purple, pink and white petunias, feathery red heads of Sylvia, yellow petals of calendulas, pools of sage and oceans of marigolds. When others were done for a season, there would always be something waiting to bud or burst up. There’s always something spilling or searing or spreading. There were weeds which I would hunt out and destroy like a soldier on an endless mission. I love meditating in the garden. Meditation helps me to take a breather from my hectic life. Strangely enough, I find happy spaces in long flights as well, where I can settle down with a glass of wine and watch crappy movies back-to-back. At the end of the day, a happy place is where you create some warm and fuzzy memories for yourself. If I really need some downtime or want to take a break from the monotonous life, I know where to head. I take a walk in the garden, pull a weed, smell a flower… and it surely makes me smile.

Vaibhav Jajoo, marketing and sales executive, 24, Wanawadi I am most happy when I am outdoors playing football, swimming or cycling. I feel as if all my troubles have melted away. An energetic and robust game of football never fails to lift my spirits up. Sharing about my day–to-day life with my mom also makes me happy. Usually in the evening, when my mother is in the kitchen cooking, I have a conversation with her. She goes about her chores and I help her by cutting vegetables. Sometimes I make sandwiches and whisk up an omelette for the both of us. barnalee.handique@goldensparrow.com

An unexplored side of Karwar Structural designer Ramnath Bhatt goes clicking on his latest trip to Karwar TGS News Service

I

The villagers organise a Rathutsav every year during the harvest season wherein a complete eco-friendly rath (chariot) is used (made of wood and paper festoons).

am a structural designer by profession and photography is a passion that takes me across the country. One place that I make it a point to visit every year and different seasons alternatively is Karwar. The backwaters of the Kali river and the interiors of Karwar are mostly unexplored because of neglect of the state government and due to the popularity of neighbouring Goa. So, I attempt to bring forth the best of this place through my pictures. The natural beauty is definitely a plus point but what really attracts is the simplicity and use of traditional methods of living by the villagers here. The Hallaki Vakkalig community here depends on rains for farming and follow only traditional ways of living and farming. They are a close knit community, which still dresses in their traditional attire and sells vegetables at the local market. (If you have a similar story and photofeature to share, kindly write to us at listings.tgslife@gmail.com)

Fishing is one of the primary occupations of Karwar. They use a U-shaped mesh which requires a lot of pressure and strength to lower and raise. You fill find five-six people working on one boat at a time.
