Ex-lovers Lawrence, Hoult get intimate on screen Actress Jennifer Lawrence will reportedly film intimate scenes with her ex-boyfriend Nicholas Hoult for “X-Men: Apocalypse”.

Feels ‘responsible’ for young actors Given his years of experience it is only natural for Hollywood star Brad Pitt to feel “responsible” for guiding young actors in the right way. That’s exactly what he did while shooting for Fury. The actor, who has been an integral part of Hollywood for almost three decades now, has worked with some of the leading names in the industry. And he’s aware of what it takes to reach the top spot. In a recent interview, Pitt opened up about being the oldest actor on the sets of his latest film Fury, said a statement. He said:“I am not the most talkative by nature but here we were, five guys stuck in a tin can and I’m the senior of the bunch, and I felt this responsibility to be direct and open with my guys, some of whom are just getting a handle on this thing and what they want to do with it. And I root for them because our industry is a very discombobulating place, especially for young actors today. I worry for them because they get used up so quickly and spat out before they have had time to develop their craft. They especially need a good head on their shoulders and strong guidance, and learn when to say ‘no’.” Fury stars Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman and Scott Eastwood. IANS

I can’t cast Aamir in ‘Dil 2’, says Indra Actor Aamir Khan made many women go weak at the knees after his hit film Dil released in 1990. But the film’s director Indra Kumar says he can’t cast the superstar in its sequel. Asked if he is planning to remake any of his old films, Kumar told IANS: “I will make Dil 2, but I can’t cast Aamir in the film because he can’t fit in that role now. Let’s see who can do justice to the role.” While the project is yet to begin, the Grand Masti director says he will continue to make adult comedies. “When I made Masti, people (from the industry) told me not to make the film and asked ‘Are you crazy?’...Then I also went ahead and made Grand Masti which again worked. For me, audience is important and I will make these kind of films,” he said. Kumar roped in Bollywood’s ageless beauty Rekha for his new film Super Naani and says the script convinced the actress to do the film. “I didn’t convince Rekha. She loved the script and the script convinced her to do the film. When you will see the film, you will know how hard she has worked for it,” he said. IANS

As boring as a real court Film: The Judge Cast: Robert Downey Jr, Robert Duvall Director: David Dobkin

R

obert Downey Jr’s list of achievements are varied. From snorting cocaine to channelling Charlie Chaplin, the range of Downey’s life experiences and professional achievements is nothing short of impressive. However, the cruel irony is that the more famous Downey has become as an actor, the less acting he’s done. With the exception of Tropic Thunder, we haven’t seen Downey get under the skin of any character since the Iron Man series became a moneyspinner. Instead, just as Tony Stark wears the Iron Man suit, all the characters that the actor has played since then seem to wear the Robert Downey Jr suit. The Judge is no exception. Hank Palmer (Downey) is an attorney in the mould of Bobby Donnell of The Practice. He’s rich, he’s successful and he defends clients who are usually guilty but can afford Hank’s astronomical fees. When his mother dies, Hank returns to his hometown of Carlinville, a blink-and-miss-it town in rural Indiana, where nothing changes. There’s easy camaraderie between Hank and his brothers, Glen (Vincent D’onofrio) and Dale (Jeremy Strong). With their father, however, the relationship is very different. Hank’s father is Joseph Palmer (Robert Duvall), who has served the town’s justice system for the past 42 years as a judge and is known for being scrupulously fair. Father and

son can barely tolerate each other. Initially, it seems as though the friction arises from Joseph thinking Hank is a city lawyer with no principles, but quickly, it becomes evident that the roots of this hostility lie much further in the past. Hank, however, is in no mood to untangle old knots. He just wants to leave Carlinville and is literally on a plane, making his exit, when Glen calls to tell Hank their father has been accused of murder. The only person who can save Judge Joseph Palmer is, of course, his son Hank. Downey crackles as Hank, who is basically what Tony Stark would have been

OCTOBER 18, 2014 PUNE

Reviews While The Judge does have its moments, the cast is not enough to make up for either the writing or the direction. Dobkin’s previous efforts include Shanghai Knights and Wedding Crashers. From goofball comedy to courtroom/family drama is a leap and Dobkins fails to make the distance, weighed down as he is by Nick Schenk and Bill Dubuque’s screenplay. At its heart though, The Judge is not about a legal trial. It’s about a father and son, and the idea of a legacy. Hank may be successful, but morally — and America, let us not forget, is as fixated on morals as we are in India — he’s at his lowest when he returns to Carlinville. He’s lost sight of the truth and the good, both professionally TGS Rating and personally. He needs his father to show him the way even though his oo`22 father is the one who is technically in the wrong. Joseph, in contrast to his son, has lived upon the strength of his principles all his life and even when it seems like ludicrous idea to do so, he obstinately refuses to give up on them. If this reminds you a little bit of Alexander Payne’s brilliant and poignant Nebraska, it should. had he been a lawyer instead of a billionaire Unfortunately for Downey, The Judge inventor. Duvall plays a proud old man, which is Nebraska gone wrong. Distracted from one imagines isn’t that much of a challenge for its focus by the need to include commercethe actor who is 83. There’s more than enough friendly details like a romance and zippy onetalent between these two men to prop up a liners for Downey, The Judge flounders and mediocre script and they succeed in holding loses its way, leaving the audience wondering your attention for most of the 142 minutes of why the questioning of someone accused for The Judge. Rapture ‘less’ Film: Left Behind Cast: Nicolas Cage, Chad Micheal Murray, Cassie Thomson, Nicky Whelan, Lea Thompson and Jordin Sparka Director: Vic Armstrong

By Troy Ribeiro Many Christian faiths believe and talk about an end-time event in future, when all true believers who are still alive before the end of the world, will be taken from the earth by god into heaven. The term describing this event is The Rapture. Packed with chaos, Left Behind is a disaster film based on this Christian, Rapture theory. The story focuses on a philandering airline pilot, Rayford Steele (Nicolas Cage) and his family. His wife Irene (Lea Thompson) is a ‘born again Christian’ and every other member in the family considers her to be crazy as she constantly speaks about god. On that fateful day, Chloe (Cassi Thomson), their college going daughter visits home for a family union, to spend time on her father’s birthday, only to be told that he has to fly to

London on duty. So to surprise her father, she lands up at the airport. By the end, they realise that the disappearance has the hand of god. Technically, the script is taut and wellstrategised with visuals shuttling between inflight and ground shots. The expositions are talk heavy with dialogues like, “If you look hard enough, you’ll see exactly what you are looking for” or “Pray to god, whose God, yours or mine?” TGS Rating Visually, the frames that oo`22 capture the anxiety amongst the cast or the panic and pandemonium that the disaster throws forth, with zero finesse, seems staged and tacky. On the performance front, the characters are flat, monotonous and stereotypical, offering nothing extraordinary and the humour too is painfully unfunny. Overall, with an average production value that combines religious and disaster movie tropes, this film may appeal only to a select audience. IANS

I NDULG E Italy calling Chef Giuseppe Lioce, Prego, The Westin Pune Koregaon Park tips on: Italian cooking: • The secret of Italian cooking is simplicity; combine the freshest seasonal ingredients with simple preparation learned from centuries of experience. This allows the natural flavours to flourish on the palate, and makes each bite taste like it was the first time that you have ever tasted it. • An Italian dish is composed of a few ingredients. • When you prepare a salad, remember to use good tomatoes, good salad leaves, good extra virgin olive oil and good balsamic vinegar. • When you cook pasta you need to first boil the water and then submerge the pasta. • Avoid eating overcooked pasta, it is not good for digestion. • For every liter of water used for cooking pasta add a tablespoon of salt. • When you prepare tomato sauce always use ripe tomatoes. • If the sauce tastes a bit sour add a tablespoon of sugar. • Always leave a few leaves of basil in tomato sauce, the only way you will feel the taste of Italy. • Italians use different herbs for different preparation... • Mint is a great ingredient for vegetable salad or for some fish preparations. • The basil is used to hold flavour to

many dishes like: pesto sauce, tomato sauce, vegetable soup, salad. • My advice is home grown herbs like basil, rosemary are the best. • Rosemary is a prime ingredient in the Italian roasts like chicken, turkey, lamb. • Other tip for the delicious Italian cuisine is the love that you put in the preparations. • Everybody loves food, but for Italians this love is more of an obsession. • “We do not eat to live, we live to eat.”

Silent, but deadly Low levels of Vitamin B12 could be the reason behind your backache and anaemia. City doctors say they see as many as 10 cases in 14 days linked to this deficiency Sneha Krishnan @TGSWeekly

V

itamin B12 deficiency is sneaky, it’s harmful and far more common than most of us realise. And it is as as common in youth as it is in the elderly. The insidious part is, as general physician Dr K. K. Punmia says, “Once Vitamin B12 deficiency is detected in a person it is a lifelong deficiency. The body can only be given supplements or medical treatment to stabilise the vitamin levels as a continuous procedure.” Given its array of symptoms, the condition can be overlooked or confused with something else. One of the most known symptoms of B12 deficiency is anaemia and lack of iron in the body leading to fatigue, joint pain, strange sensations, numbness or tingling in the hands, legs and feet. If left untreated or undetected, it can cause severe neurologic problems and blood diseases. Thirty-eight-year-old Rhea Wadhwani has been on Vitamin B Complex supplements and Ayurvedic medication since she was in her early 30s. “I used to look pale and started experiencing unbearable backaches,” she says. “This was aggravated by the fact that I ride a motorbike every day. My husband insisted I undergo a medical check-up and to our surprise, it was a vitamin deficiency. I follow a strict vegetarian diet and I’m lactose intolerant too, which made consumption of B12 scarcer.” Pregnant women, who have low B12 levels, tend to pass on the foetus. “My mother has always had a low B12 count,” says Rhea, a homemaker from Camp. “My haemoglobin count has been 10 or 10.5 for the last eight to nine years. The required count is 13-14. I manage to keep it at 10 only because of the medication.”

Sources of Vitamin B12 The best sources of Vitamin B12 or Cobalamin are eggs, red meat, liver and shell fish. This vitamin is produced in the gut of animals. It’s the only vitamin we can’t obtain from plants or sunlight. For vegetarians, the main source of Vitamin B12 is milk and dairy products. However, boiling milk destroys almost all the Vitamin B12 and therefore we further reduce its intake. “Knowing the fact that Vitamin B12 is mainly found in vegetarians, we never advise patients to change their diet,” says Punmia. “The effects of B12 deficiency on children are especially alarming. Studies have shown that children raised until age six on a vegan diet are

The best sources of Vitamin B12 or Cobalamin are eggs

Why is the body losing the ability to absorb B12 vitamin? Intrinsic factor (IF), also known as gastric intrinsic factor (GIF), is a glycoprotein produced by the parietal cells of the stomach. It is necessary for the absorption of Vitamin B12 later on in the small intestine. An imbalance of sugar in your body can affect the level of glycoprotein produced. “In such cases, the course of treatment is more complex,” says Dr. Punmia.

B12 deficient even years after they start eating some animal products. Even they have to turn to regular supplements to help the body stabilise vitamin levels. The body requires very minute portions of B12 — the count is of micrograms level. Therefore supplements are as effective as the nutrition you would receive straight from your diet.” It’s a common myth amongst vegetarians and vegans is that it’s possible to get B12 from plant sources such as seaweed, fermented soy, spirulina and brewer’s yeast. Plants don’t need B12, so they don’t store it. Plant foods actually contain B12 analogs called cobamides that block intake of and increase the need for true B12. Dr Punima says he see at least 10 patients with B12 deficiency every fortnight. Long term damage “The long-term deficiency of Vitamin B12 is megaloblastic anaemia. Most doctors advise oral treatment and injectable treatment only in serious cases,” says Dr Punmia. “One thing

Benefits of Vitamin B12 • Vitamin B12 is required for the production of red blood cells (RBCs). It’s deficiency is linked to overall weakness and fatigue. • Sufficient levels of Vitamin B12 are required to lower the levels of a compound called homocysteine that is linked to heart attack and stroke risk. • A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that daily intake of Vitamin B12 supplements was associated with improvement in mental health scores and completion of memory tasks in the elderly population (60-74 years) after a period of two years. • If you don’t eat animal products, or you have a medical condition that limits how well your body absorbs nutrients, experts recommend taking a B12-containing multivitamin and eating breakfast cereal fortified with Vitamin B12.

patients need to keep in mind is that if you stop the medication, B12 levels will fall again. Long neglect affects the spinal cord and in severe conditions even the brain, leading to headaches.” Punmia, who practises at Camp, adds that though long-term medication maintains stability, factor such as riding bikes, lifting heavy objects, stress, odd sleeping positions and even rigorous exercise can aggravate the pain. editor_tgs@goldensparrow.com

From that long bygone era, horse racing today is an enterprise that not only attracts punters from all strata of society, but with its turf club setting and celebritysplashed audience, is a veritable showcase for the latest in international fashion and style. Since its inception in 1802, Pune’s Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) has been home to the spectacle of galloping steeds, cheering stands and high fashion. The exclusive club also enjoys the patronage of the crème de la crème of the city, along with a sprinkling of film stars and the rich and the famous, on race days and weekends. And given the occasion, the fashion conscious turn up in their most striking turn-outs, especially the fair sex for whom this is the opportunity to see and be seen, like no other. The big draws on the RWITC race calendar are the Poonawalla Breeder’s Multi-Million, RWITC Gold Cup, Independence Cup, Southern Command, Panchshil Million, the Indian St Leger not to forget the Oktoberfest. Every year new sponsored races are introduced. The Poonawalla Breeder’s Multi-Million is the most highprofile, being the richest race and the richest juvenile race in the country. As expected, it is also the occasion for a lot of fanfare and celebration. Naturally, the ladies make the most of this highly festive occasion, and turn up in the most eye-catching outfits, transforming the race course into something akin to a fashion event.

Michelle Poonawalla, director, Poonawalla Engineering companies

Trends: One must dress up in smart casuals on regular race days and smart formals at the Derby or Soli Poonawalla Million events. Light or bright colours are suitable for these days. Silhouettes should be elegant and conservative. On big race days, hats and fascinators are welcome. Preferred wear at the races: I like to wear day time, smart clothes to the races. They do not have to be of a specific brand. I like to mix and match to achieve an elegant look. How one should dress for the races: Races are a day time affair, so women should wear dresses or smart trousers with a top. Unless worn right, nightwear and black is a complete no-no. Men should wear lightcoloured suits or a smart blazer on regular race days. Complete no-nos: Casual dressing. Avoid slippers, shorts and cocktail dresses.

Maral Yazaraloo, fashion designer

Trends: Strong, bold colours with straight and short cuts. Preferred wear at the races: I make my own dresses and pair them with suitable accessories. How one should dress for the races: Usually, it’s formal p a r t y

wear. Colours matter as it's an outdoors, day time event. Women should wear appropriate shoes and accessories like hats and necklaces with their dresses. But do not go overboard and mix and match tastefully. Complete no-nos: Black or dark dresses, jeans and stilettos.

Saba Noor, fashion designer

Trends: Clean lines, cocoon silhouettes and androgynous looks in fur, capes and feathers in this season, it’s all about wrapping up against the cold, pretty palettes, 60s prints and flashes of gold. Preferred wear at the races: I go for elegant, formal day wear by James Ferreira, Dior and Stella McCartney. How one should dress for the races: Fashion and races go hand in hand. I believe in keeping it comfortable yet stylish. Women in their early 20s should choose Dior, Stella McCartney or Ferragamo. Women in the early 30s should go in for Donna Karan, Chanel, Gucci and custom head gear. Casual saris by Sabyasachi and Raw Mango with structured blouses work best for women in their 40s. Complete no-nos: The length of the dress should be just above the knee. No miniskirts, shorts or cropped pants.

Delna Poonwalla, fashion designer

Trends: There are many themes and styles and a wider range

to choose from. Prints, from floral designs to geometric and psychedelic prints, paint brush effect, tie dye, mirror imaging, stripes mixed with polka dots, all make for a bold statement while adding fun and colour. Colour blocking works well too. It's putting together different yet complementary colours, like a blue and green or purple and red together. But one should be careful not to get the colours wrong. Black and white is a classic combination that never goes out of vogue, and is great at the races. Silhouettes come in a wide range and variety, though my advice is to stay with what suits your body type the best. Jackets make for a smart look at the races, and a well-cut jacket can add style and edginess to a casual outfit. Accessorising is important, but it should be appropriate. If you already have a hat of stature or an eye catching outfit, keep the accessories to a minimum. Preferred wear at the races: There is nothing more flattering than clothing that falls and drapes effortlessly over the body. I enjoy mixing designer labels with high street fashion and also wear my own styles. For instance, Mason and Helmut Lang and Vince are designers that make easy silhouettes which you can layer over cigarette cut or skinny jeans. They are beautifully cut and crafted yet comfortable to wear for long periods. Diane von Furstenberg (DVF) printed dresses are great for the races and suitable for our hot weather. Peter Pilotto and Mary Katrantzou are favourite designers of mine. I also like teaming up a nice shirt from Zara or a cool top from H&M with my jeans for a more casual look. I wear a lot of fascinators and hats to the races. From tiny to overpowering big hats, some pretty and dramatic ones too. I love Alexis Bittar's

(a New York-based designer of costume jewellery) pendants and ear rings, made from semi-precious stones and natural materials that give it a unique modern and art deco feel. How one should dress for the races: A well-fitted dress that suits your body shape in a print or bold colour always works well for the races. A variety of lengths are suitable for this event, be it a maxi dress, knee length or a short dress, as long as it does not border on being party or club wear or too bling. For those not comfortable in a dress, jumpsuits are a very flattering alternative, comfortable in our hot weather as well as being in vogue at the moment. A good stylish alternative for trousers right now are harem pants. They are quite a rage these days. If your hat is big and the main focus, keep the outfit simple and accessories to a minimum. A beautiful head Do not dress piece can complete your outfit or make you stand out from like you the crowd. For instance, with a are going white dress, baby pink fascinator goes well or monochrome (white clubbing or in white) works. show a bare Complete no-nos: Avoid tummy wedge jeans on big racing days. Do not dress like you -Delna are going clubbing or show a bare tummy wedge. Cowboy hats and boots are not appropriate gear. Too much bling is avoidable at the races; remember it's a day affair. barnalee.handique@ goldensparrow.com

Photo khinch na, photo,” he exclaimed. “I relate to being called Handa more than Ravi,” says the 31-year-old Balewadi resident. Handa studied BTech at IIT Kharagpur and came to Pune four years ago. He runs an online coaching platform for children all over India called Handa Ka Funda. Ravi is married to a woman he loves, but life with him is not easy. “My wife gets startled even if our maid closes the main door loudly,” he says. “When she comes home from work and the lights are on, she knows I’m home. One day, I hid behind the curtains in our bedroom and once she was close enough, I held her leg. She almost had a heart attack.” Handa’s life has been interesting to say the least. “I used to blog when I was in the first year of BTech. It was 2004 and a clip called ‘DPS Scandal’ had gone viral. he slipper shoe is a light and flexible shoe made of soft leather and a thin sole. These shoes go perfectly well a with casual look. The slipper or loafer apart from it’s original form is also available in a welted version The moccasin slipper shoe was a shoe worn by the Native American Indian. The

moccasin has a peculiar feature as the vamp, quarter and the tongue are made of single piece of leather and there are no buckles or laces. The make of the moccasin is like a normal shoe with heel and is not flat. Decorative elements on the moccasin slipper are hand-stitching aprons and tassels. It is very elegant in nature and can be worn with chinos, khakis, denims. Current trend is to also pair them with a suit. Must have colours: tan, black but you can experiment with shades of grey and blue. The penny loafer is another type of slipper whose distinguished feature is the

leather bar laid across the tongue. A penny could be slipped under the bar so the name penny loafer. This slipper shoe can be worn on formals as well as trouser. A must have pair would be in black as it goes on everything. Michael Jackson made this style famous wearing a slim trouser and showcasing the sock. Style tip: Try not to wear the socks with slipper shoes and keep them simple; add colors like burgundy, tan and black as must haves. Colourful loafers in summer. And tassel loafers for that old school British look.
