lok Nath was a newcomer when he landed a minute’s role in Richard Attenborough’s epic film Gandhi, in 1982. The veteran actor recalls that the late film-maker was a “great human being”, who loved Indian culture. Attenborough died Sunday night following prolonged illness in London. He was 90. Recollecting his memories of Attenborough, Alok told IANS: “I had a minute’s role in his film and my interaction with him was very memorable. As a film-maker, he was in love with Indian culture and he’s the one who reinvented Mahatma Gandhi for us. No Indian had done this before.” “He was a brilliant actor, director and a great human being,” added the actor who made his film debut with the movie.

After his stint at the National School of Drama, Gandhi was Alok’s first film. He played a blink-and-youmiss character of Tyeb Mohammed in the film, which is a biopic on Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, hailed in India as the ‘Father of the Nation’. IANS

A lot of turbulence in Tulip’s TV debut Serial: Airlines Producer: Miditech

By Rajyasre Sen

O

n Sunday night, Twitter was abuzz about a brand new show on Star Plus. Why? Because Airlines is supposedly a “woman-centric” and “feminist” show (whatever that means), written by Advaita Kala, the scriptwriter of the Kahaani. I’m all for Indian television making any kind of programme which has even a passing reference to non-repressed women. So I stayed up late to watch the rerun of the show. Doffing their hat to irony, Star Plus has scheduled this woman-centric show right after a Serial programme featuring review Yo Yo Honey Singh. That in itself could be entertainment enough, but let’s move on to the show itself. have the money to afford employee Tulip Joshi is Ananya, a pilot pick-ups? None of this matters in whom we first see driving through Kala’s world of feminist pilots, it Delhi in an Ambassador with six seems. family members. Why has the It turns out that Ananya is the airline not sent a car to take the first female pilot at Inde Air. Yes, it’s pilot to the airport? Should you be welcome that a television serial has working for an airline which doesn’t a working woman as the main lead.

But is Airlines the serial that will break the glass ceiling of misogynist Hindi programming? Going by what I saw, I’m not very sure. To begin with, all the write-ups claim is that it’s a modern love story, which in itself is disheartening. Why can’t Airlines be a show where

Bhatt. It was nice working with him I had no problem working with him. He is a very good actor... he is a highly underrated actor,” he said. The film also stars Pakistani actress Humaima Malick, Kay Kay Menon and has released all over. On playing the role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a biopic, the BJP MP said, “The scripting is still going on... almost 70-80 per cent work is over. It is a tricky one (film) as biopics are often made on those people whose career has ended or there is a full stop (to their career) but this man (Modi) has just began his innings. “So what to do and how to take it ahead... is where we are having difficulty.” (By special arrangement with Firstpost.com)

Reviews later, when television has become an enormous money spinner and supposedly earns pots of money in ad revenue, the production values and scripting would be better than before. But no. Airlines is marked by terrible acting and very poor production value. Whether it is the fake tarmac or the fake plane flying through fake clouds or even the fake scenery that you can see through the windows of the car, this show really could do with spending a little more on production. The direction is very saas-bahu, with actors doing triple takes unnecessarily, like when Ananya takes off her jacket in front of the male pilots to reveal her pilot’s uniform underneath. She does it three times. Unless of course she was wearing three jackets, there really was no need for this triple whammy. I hope that the second episode of Airlines will surprise me and fans of saas-bahu serials will watch this show and realise daughters aren’t meant to just be married off. That unmarried young women can live life on their terms and should be allowed to do so. It would probably help if a little more money was spent on the production and training the actors. And it wouldn’t hurt to add a little nuance to the story of pilots and air hostesses who make up the world of Airlines. Airlines is telecast every Sunday at 9pm, on Star Plus? hat you put on your plate reflects in what you see in the mirror. Right from overdoing a certain diet plan, to excluding or including certain foods diet can affect the way you look and feel. Naini Setalvad, obesity and lifestyle disease consultant, gives us a lowdown on the pros and cons of some popular diets.

Method: Put 70gm of sugar in a pan and put on fire, stir gently to make good caramel. Add 25gm of butter and banana slices and saute well. Make a batter of pancake with refined flour, butter, sugar, milk, baking pwd., eggs and saffron. Make small pancakes and garnish with banana pancake.

Controlled carbs The goal is to control insulin levels. This is a good way to lose weight and control insulin. Pros: It does not restrict calorie intake, cuts down large amount of starches and sugar. Cons: It is a short term solution. You tend to lose water and muscle tissue, not fat. The body is used to low carb, so you put on weight easily once you consume carbs. There is a high risk of binging on carbs. It lacks essential nutrients and though the diet is low in carbs, it’s high in saturated fat. Your body needs carbs to produce serotonin which elevates mood and suppresses appetite. Low-carb diets make you feel tired, angry, depressed and tense.

Recipes by Abhimanyu Sinha, Sous Chef, Le Meridien Pune

Dr Atkins’ new diet revolution High amount of proteins is consumed and radically, no carbohydrates. Pros: Rapid weight loss, easy and inexpensive. Cons: It is restrictive in nature. It causes high consumption of saturated fats, dizziness, headaches and cuts out valuable nutrients. It impacts kidneys negatively because of high levels of protein and fat. You are sapped of energy and your body is forced into ketosis (a metabolic state where most of the body’s energy supply comes from ketone bodies in the blood). It causes halitosis, dehydration and constipation.

Carbohydr ate addicts diet This diet recommends three meals a day. The first two meals are strictly controlled — one meal has to include chicken, eggs, fish; and and high fat dairy products like cheese such as cheese. Carbs, such as potatoes, are restricted. Fruits such as bananas and grapes which are high in sugar and carbs, are also to be avoided. The third meal is the reward meal, where you can eat any food you like, including carbs. Pros: You consume low GI (glycaemic index) foods which help control diabetes. The diet is supplemented with daily exercise, and allows a cheat meal. Cons: It can have a negative impact on those with heart disease and high cholesterol because of the high saturated fats. It is unbalanced as it excludes major food groups, nearly eliminating carbs. Unless you plan well, this could lead to loss of nutrients, calcium and fibre, which leads to weakness, tiredness. The high saturated fat causes constipation. Liquid diets Fruit and vegetable juices, shakes four to five times a day, replace all meals. Pros: It is easy and convenient and you see immediate weight loss. Cons: It is a short term solution and lacks in nutrients, causes fatigue, dizziness, hair loss. It lacks in supplying the required amount of energy and nutrition to the body, weakening muscles and causing extreme loss of energy. It is harmful to your metabolism and you face starts to age. High carbohydr ate and low fat diet Pile on fruits, grains, vegetables. Have a portion of protein and restrict oil to 3 tsp per day.

Pros: Helps weight loss and enhances the mood. Cons: It can lead to low blood pressure and constipation because of the lack of a wellbalanced diet. It increases the risk of heart problem with the increase of sugar intake and leads to blood cholesterol. The Marie Antoinette Diet This diet is becoming popular among youngsters. It claims you can lose some weight by eating cake. Cake (and desserts) are strictly reserved for breakfast. “Certain foods are bad for your skin and can make you look haggard and old,” says Dr Amrapali Patil, weight management specialist, “Fried, greasy, sugary foods, foods made of refined flour, foods that lack vegetables and fruits, and a diet that is largely dependent on pasta, bread and butter spells doom for beauty.” These foods impair the function of collagen (an important factor that renders youthful appearance to your skin and keeps it bouncy and elastic) and break it down. In fact, certain foods like pasta and desserts trigger an inflammatory response, which results in generation of AGEs (advanced glycation end products), which age the skin. AGEs, themselves, are inflammatory products, and the process of ageing is a chronic inflammatory condition. The cons, Patil says are, “Sugary pastries, cakes, doughnuts, etc. are extremely high on sugar content and directly cause inflammation. This translates into wrinkles. Fried and greasy foods are rich in trans fat, another inflammationprovoking agent. Also, these reduce good or HDL cholesterol and increase the bad or LDL cholesterol. That’s not good news for the skin or heart. Processed meats, cold cut meats, bacon and pepperoni not only contain nitrates, but also saturated fats, both of which induce inflammation, speeding up ageing.” anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

Heady brews Wine Lovers meet-ups bring people over glasses of fine wine By Anjali Shetty @shetty_anjali

What can be better than fine wine and the right ambience and company to enjoy it in? It was this thought that inspired Sujata Patil to launch Wine Lovers meet-ups. “The idea was to gather people who love wine, as well as those who wished to learn more about wines. So we conduct wine-related activities with likeminded people, across all age groups,” says Sujata. The group was started in July 2013, and now it has 68 members. The activities include visits to vineyards, presentations featuring wines from France,

along with wine-tasting sessions. “The enthusiasm of people from different walks of life, who wish to understand the magical experience of wine, inspires me,” says the 46-year-old. Sujata’s endeavour has allowed the group’s members to experience and exchange views on the enchanting world of wines with a broad spectrum of people with diverse backgrounds. From Indian wines, the group now aims to broaden their horizons with wines from around the world. Future plans include creation of a wine club, which will provide an opportunity to discover and taste wines from various parts of the world. “Wines

I think I am still at the early stages of helping consumers learn — which is to understand how to taste a wine and what to look for, in terms of subtleties. Hopefully, we will get to the stage where the members will bring bottles of wines to be tasted and talk about them. A lot of the members are totally new to drinking wines. However, since they are familiar with tastes of different kinds — fruity, chocolate, vanilla — they are able to identify certain flavours present in the wines. These make the e2o a great city runabout – compact with decent space, easy to drive, silent, and of course clean and green. Inside, the e2o bristles with high-res display screens packed with info on energy flow. The pod in the centre of the instrument cluster has a battery meter and an ammeter that shows how much energy is being used or recuperated. The Zest 110 marks the evolution of the ever popular Scooty. Abhay Verma gives it a go

T

he TVS Scooty that has been around for over two decades, has been given a complete makeover, along with a new, bigger engine. Called the Scooty Zest, it is bigger than the regular Scooty Pep, with lots of changes inside and out, including a revised chassis and a new engine that warrant it an all-new tag. The Signature colour is the bright and attractive turquoise blue you see on these pages. The styling is fresh, and overall the Zest looks pretty modern and up-to-date with nice design cues, especially at the rear. The slightly bigger headlight retains the smiley design from the older Scooty to retain the brand connection. The new features include a backlit speedometer, footboard with a textured finish, and a snazzy, LED stop light. More importantly, the Scooty Zest gets a rear brake lock, which is a boon when you are stationary on a slope. Most manufacturers have eliminated the brake lock, but TVS has included it as a helpful feature for the fair sex, and it works well. The chassis has been revised suitably to reduce overall weight and aid handling, which was evident during our ride on the test track at the TVS Motor Hosur plant. The new TVS scooter also features painted switchgear that enhances its appeal. The manufacturer says this will make it more

convenient to use as well. Despite the compact dimensions of the scooter, footboard space is impressive. Overall, the Scooty Zest 110 is wider, and set slightly lower than the Pep, which makes it even more comfortable to ride and handle in traffic. The bag hooks under the handlebar and below the seat, and the open glove compartment under the handlebar to store knick-knacks or water bottle, add to the utility features list. TVS claims that the Scooty Zest 110 is the quickest in the compact scooter segment and will accelerate to 60kmph from standstill in 11.1 seconds. It felt quick on the track, with revisions to the CVT transmission offering smooth, linear acceleration. Top speed should be in the region of 80kmph, given its kerb weight of 97kg. The Scooty Zest 110 provides a benchmark for what an automatic scooter should be - light, quick and nimble. The low-set handlebar, its light weight and eager power delivery make

it fun around corners, though the 10-inch wheels are a bit of a let down. Interestingly, the rear brake drum is larger, with a 130mm diameter compared to the front drum which is a 110mm unit, since TVS believes that most women riders do not use the front brake, and rely entirely on the rear brake to slow down or come to a halt. However, the front drum brake could do with some more bite. TVS claims that the Scooty Zest will return 62kmpl, which is identical to the Wego and Jupiter, that are also powered by the same engine. Given the TVS new generation scooters’ reliability, living with the Zest should be easy on the wallet.

The Scooty Zest retails at `42,300 exshowroom New Delhi. It should be an ideal city commuter for both women and men as well, given its features, performance, handling and efficiency. The Scooty Zest faces competition from scooters like the Suzuki Lets, Honda Activa-i and Yamaha Ray primarily. But it is equally well built, boasts of an elaborate feature list and is nice to ride. With its evolution, the Scooty Zest 110 is a prime contender in the compact scooter segment, taking the game forward in the automatic scooter arena. abhay@evo.in

Ever wondered where thoroughbreds go after retirement? Or why jockeys are weighed before and after a race? Barnalee Handique has the answers

Q

H

orse racing is an industry. There is a whole community of professionals involved in the enterprise, including jockeys, trainers and track commentators. And like any industry, it has its share of quirks, subtleties and nuances that are not evident to outsiders. We bring you a behind the scenes perspective on the sport of horse racing.

How do commentators identify jockeys?

“Every owner has a colour that is registered in the office. If the owner has two or three horses, then all the jockeys will wear the colour, but the colour of the helmets will be different,” says 57-year-old commentator Deepak Rajpal. The commentators know from the colour who the is. The commentators also use a reference sheet. “From my school days I was interested in cricket commentary,” says Deepak Rajapal. “One day, I visited the racecourse in Bangalore with my father. I was fascinated by the sport, especially the track commentator. I felt it was amazing how the commentator could remember the names of the horses, the owners and jockeys, as well as their numbers. In 1985 I applied for a track commentator’s job in Bangalore, and I got it. In 1987, I came to Pune and racing became an integral part of my life.” Like Rajapal, 55-year-old Mahendra Mallaya is also a track commentator at RWITC, Pune. In 1989, he started his career in Bangalore. He too wanted to be a cricket commentator. One day since it was raining and cricket was called off he and his friends went to the racecourse. Mallaya fell in love with the horses and the art of commentating. He decided he wanted to do it. Mallaya says, “Every race is a challenge; you don’t get a second chance. The Indian Derby is a prestigious race and there are spectators from all around the world, so for me it is a very special occasion.”

Q

Where do thoroughbreds go after retirement?

Thoroughbred horses are very well cared for. But what happens to them after they are too old to race? Some are sold off or even given away. Others are used in the game of polo or show jumping. “Some are sent to riding schools or army riding clubs. Most are sent to Mysore, to an old age home for horses. There they are taken care of till they pass away,” says 45-year-old Jehan Satarawalla. Horses with outstanding track records are sent to stud farms, for their use in breeding.

Q

How are horses named?

Horses are named after their thoroughbred parents. “For instance, Blue Ace was sired by Ace and Blue, the mare. Dancing Phoenix, was sired by Phoenix Star and All Dancing was the mare,” says 55-year-old Munchi Shroff, who owns 17 horses. Jehan Satarwalla who runs Jaws Events says, “A horse was unsold at the auction yard and my friend suggested I take a look at him. I fell in love with him and he was my first horse. My friend Nicole suggested calling him ‘Catalyst’,” reveals Satarwalla. One of his favourite horses is named ‘Lancelot’, as he was sired by Royal Knight and Scenic Royale. So Satarwalla named him after one of the knights from Miguel Cervantes’s novel Don Quixote.

Q

Why do trainers talk to horses?

“Horses are very sensitive, moody and emotional creatures. If one is upset or in pain, you have to talk to him and soothe his nerves,” explains trainer Nina Lalvani. She and Nazak Chenoy are the only female trainers on the Mumbai-Pune circuit. “I am at the tracks at 4 am to train the horses,” says 41-year-old Lalvani. Lalvani joined a riding school when she was six years old. Initially I wanted to become a jockey,” she says. She has 19 horses in her stables at Empress garden. Thirty-one-year-old Nazak trained under her father Bejan Chenoy. “I grew up with horses,” she says, “My father was a well-known trainer in Mumbai. So grooming horses came naturally to me.” Chenoy has 42 horses in her stables. To be a trainer, one has to apprentice under a reputed get are issued a licence by the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC).

That’s how the name Lagu Bandhu Motiwale emerged. Now, it is known as Lagu Bandhu, and was set up in Pune, in 1995. After surveying the market here, Lagu realised that Pune was not known as a jewellery hub. City jewellers were churning out mass produced jewellery in gold and silver. That’s when the thought of expanding from cultured pearls into a full scale jewellery business. Today, Lagu Bandhu is known as specialists in studded jewellery made from finest diamonds, emeralds, rubies and other precious stones. It has manufacturing units in Mumbai and

Pune. There are four retail stores in Mumbai, two in Pune and one each in Thane, Dombivli and Panaji. They also have an exhibition centre in the US. Their customers in the country and abroad are devoted to the brand. During festive and wedding seasons, the stores are flooded with customers. Lagu, his mother Anjali and wife Neha, attend to each customer personally. “We do our best to make the shopping experience enjoyable so that our customers can pick the jewellery they like,” he says. Readymade jewellery such as bangles, bracelets, rings, necklaces, pendants and earring sets are available in traditional, contemporary and fusion designs. There is also a range of jewellery for working women. The designs are created by their team in Mumbai. Patrons can also order customised jewellery. “Customisation helps us to know exactly what the patron wants. It helps us to understand how to serve the customer better,” says Lagu. It takes between one week and two months to design custom jewellery. He has plans for a couple of stores in the US. Lagu is currently doing a survey of the US market. Also in the pipeline are 20 exhibitions across the US this year. “Customisation helps us to know exactly what the patron wants. hen I picked up this book back in 2007, it was only because I’d heard about it from a few friends. Little did I know it was going to be one of the best books I’d pick up while randomly strolling across book racks. The title of Khalid Hosseini’s second book, A Thousand Splendid Suns, is a phrase from ‘Kabul’, a 17th century poem about the people of Afghanistan. The tale brings together two women from two different generations and traces their struggle for survival in the tragic, war-ridden country of Afghanistan. It depicts their efforts to raise a family and find happiness — things that seem almost impossible to attain in a land where a tumultuous history is playing out. The book

takes us through the dark ages of the country under the Soviet invasion, the Taliban rule and its experiment with democracy. Hosseini brings home the complex socio-politics of the region to the reader through the lives of two women — Mariam and Laila. Mariam is an illegitimate child born in 1959. She’s married off at 15 to Rasheed, a man from Kabul, almost 20 years older. He is a cruel man who mistreats her because she can’t bear him a child and forces her to wear a ‘burqa’ even though liberal women in the city don’t wear one. Laila, on the other hand, is born just before the Russian invasion. Brought up as a free girl, her dreams of studying and Books travelling are crushed by an accident that kills her worth family members during revisiting the war years. She ends up recovering in Mariam’s house. Rasheed declares one fine day that if Laila has to continue living in his house, she’ll have to be his wife. Initially, Mariam thinks of Laila as someone who stole her husband from her,

but then life takes a huge turn for both these women. They bond like mother and daughter and soon the house is blessed with two wonderful children. The two women often come across situations where protecting their children becomes difficult in a country where only weapons speak. What moved me the most is to see the extent to which they go to keep their children safe and the cost at which they escape danger. What I like about the book is the way the two main characters are delineated in detail. Their feelings towards each other and towards the children are depicted with great care and affection. History confirms that women have always suffered at the hands of men and the Taliban in Afghanistan. They have never had the freedom to choose their own destiny. In fact, the Taliban rule made life so miserable for women that they could not move out of their houses without a male family member. But it’s not just the women protagonists we feel for. Hossieni’s very fine work opens our eyes to the harsh realities of Afghanistan and its people, as it kept passing from one exploitative regime to the other. snehakrishnan@hotmail.com
