on self esteem and confidence. It was only after performing in a few Marathi plays and participating in the television show, India’s Best Dramebaaz, that I gained confidence to do just about anything,” says Aditya, a tenth standard student of Bishop’s School, Kalyani Nagar. A strict mentor and exposure to acting at a tender age made Aditya confident about his skills. “My acting ability improved tremendously on the TV show and it opened a
new avenue for me. I am more technically and creatively sound because of the exposure I received on the show,” smiles Aditya, who scored a distinction in his final exams this year. “I take up plays and advertising assignments only during summer vacations. Merit Animal is my first feature and we have almost wrapped the shoot. So it won’t hinder my studies,” justifies the young actor. The film is directed by Junaid Imam, known best for his short Ekulta Ek Raja, which won the Best Film Award at the International Film Festival, Barcelona, in 2014. The film portrays the stress a student living in the city faces and his encounters with his peers back in the village. “The film does not have a happy ending. We are portraying a stark reality about today’s educations system. We are also highlighting the behaviour of city robots versus village animals.” While he might be getting numerous acting assignments currently, Aditya does not plan to make a career out of acting. “Getting into Bollywood and sticking to it is a big task. It is not a stable career, income-wise. I will continue to give auditions but I will take up a career in psychology when I’m older,” the teenager shares. feedback.tgs@goldensparrow.com

P
erhaps it’s their sense of humour, call it joie de vivre if you must, that helped the tiny Parsi community survive and make its mark as the city’s girth grew wider over the years. The curious cafes have earned their place in local lore but the community’s business acumen went far beyond the scope of a brun-maska. So, among the first few businesses to open its doors to Puneites was the optical store A Dinshaw & Co, which has held its ground for the last 182 years. Nearly half a century later, Dorabjee & Sons Restaurant, was founded in 1878. In comparison, the iconic timekeepers of the city, CT Pundole & Sons, and Victory Theatre are much younger, having been established nearer the turn of the 20th century. Victory Theatre, East Street In 1987, Farokh P Chinoy decided to help in-laws Dara and Dina Sukhia run Victory Theatre. The Sukhias had taken over Capitol Cinema in 1936. For Farokh, the theatre brought an experience he had never expected. “It was adventurous and inspiring. As a business, I had to start by understanding its different aspects,” recalls the 68-year-old. As time passed, staff members, who had joined almost along with Farokh, turned loyal. Ambadas Jalgi, Kiran and Zahir Shaikh have worked at Victory Theatre for the last 28 years. The new millennium brought with it new business models and Farokh decided to let time’s tide sway him a little. “Things changed enormously with the entry of multiplexes. It reduced the share of cinema owners and since then single screens are struggling to survive. We have changed with times and are surviving. When you take on a business you have to attend to it and be there through thick and thin. You have to put you mind and body to it and take responsibility for it,” he explains. “We don’t mind giving Rs 100 to charity but we will not shell out even Rs 10 as bribe. Parsis have lost businesses because they do not give in to bribes. We are a community that believes in charity and honesty. It runs in our blood. We do not like to cheat or betray. We have learned to laugh at ourselves hence we make people laugh,” Farokh believes.
are a delightful people to be around. Cawas Pundole’s cheerful greeting is as responsible for keeping the business going as Sohrab Chinoy’s cheese trivia. “We are a diminishing community. There are just about 85,000 Parsis left in the entire world but that does not stop us from enjoying the good things in life. You can never sit with a straight face among Parsis. They will leave you rolling on the floor in a few minutes. It explains why the Parsis are a loved community,” smiles Darius, the fourth generation owner of Dorabjee & Sons restaurant, Camp. Cawas points out that it’s the community’s respect for punctuality that helps hone their business acumen, “It is Indian Standard Time, not Indian Stretchable Time. We maintain timings and respect our customer’s time too. Maybe that is what helps us stand out.” Here’s a walk down memory lane with people who have seen Pune grow:
Farida Pajnigar and Rushad Bharucha
A Dinshaw & Co, MG Road This optical store is amongst Pune’s oldest establishments. Founded by Dinshawjee in 1833, the 182-year-old optical store is a landmark on MG Road. Currently run by Boman (54), Rushad (25), Nauzar Bharucha (45) and Farida Pajnigar (53), the store also ensure that the family remains close-knit. “Values have always been of prime importance to this family. We were taught to take care of customer’s needs first. Boman
ensures that the staff is trained to be polite and efficient. We believe in prompt service, during and after sale, which is rare,” states Farida. She adds that younger customers stepping into the store tend to be well-informed and aware of what they’re looking for due to the internet. “This is where I step in to bridge the gap between the staff and the youth. I keep the staff updated on the latest trends so that they know
what works for the young crowd,” says Rushad. Boman, on the other hand, works towards sourcing the latest market trends. He believes that, in time, the market has changed for the better. “There is a lot of choice available in the market but we cannot compromise on quality or customer service because that is what brings people back to us,” he points out.
Dorabjee & Sons Restaurant, Dastur Meher Road There quite a few, famously popular cafes run by Parsis in Pune. But there are only a few restaurants that have stood the test of time and Dorabjee & Sons leads the pack. The secret to the success is perhaps the ever-smiling Darius Dorabjee. As much as the Salli Gosht and Chicken Biryani have been constants on the menu, Darius’ smile has been constant at the restaurant. The fourth generation Dorabjee also doubles up as the restaurant’s chef. Founded in 1878 by Sohrabjee Dorabjee, Dorabjee & Sons Restaurant was passed down to Marzban and then Zal Dorabjee. “I joined the staff when I was 16. I started off in the kitchen. Today, I know 55 preparations that have been passed down every generation of the Dorabjees,” beams Darius. The profits have not remained the same but it does not deter Darius to open shop every day. “We haven’t changed anything. We still operate on charcoal and have maintained the old world charm. The only difference you will find is the prices of dis hes,” says the 45-year-old. The joint is much-loved by people living far and beyond Camp. In fact, every Sunday, a couple aged 92 and 97 visit the restaurant for their fill of Chicken Dhansak. “They missed visiting us one
week and profusely apologised for it,” smiles Darius, adding, “It is this love and affection that brings me to work. I am satisfied with what I make. It is my passion and choice to be here.” As we prepare to leave, a patron walks in, Darius
Father Cawas with son Hormuz Pundole
takes the order but does not charge a penny. She asks, “How do you do business if you keep giving me for free?” Darius answers, “Well, I get to see beautiful women like you why do I need the money.”
Darius Dorabjee
Walk into any of the 17 stores of CT Pundole & Sons and rest assured that you would be treated with utmost care and genuine attention. That’s a promise made by the owner Cawas Pundole. The fourth generation businessman is known to be a genuine person. The family business was started by Temhuljee Pundole in 1909. Over the years, the store passed down from Cawasjee, to Hoshang and is now run by Cawas, his son Hormuz and daughter Aviva. 25 years after Cawas took over the reign of the store, Hormuz followed in 2001, while Aviva joined her father and brother three years ago. “We have a set of rules that we have been following since we started out. The first being, one has to be genuine and in no way cheat customers. The knowledge and principles I hold dear have been passed on by my father and have passed it down to my family and employees. I won’t deviate from this ever,” says Cawas. Meanwhile, Hormuz is happy to be in a business that operates with honesty and holds customer satisfaction in high regard. “I learned how to develop a personal rapport with a customer from my father. Our customers trust us and we have to reciprocate the honour. We deal with the same principles at work and at home,” explains Hormuz. However, he does get upset thinking about the state of affairs within the Parsi community. He mourns the fact that the number of people attending community dos has reduced drastically in the last few years. “I am the president of the Zoroastrian Youth Association and I have observed that the number of Parsis attending community functions is reducing. There was a time when annual events would have 2,000 to 3,000 people in attendance but today we just have a head count of 500 people at the most.”

Will Pune shape the next Shakespeare? The city is finding reasons to rhyme lately. New and old poetry clubs are sharing works of established and budding poets, encouraging a love for literature all along

clubs germinating around the city. For those wanting to ease into the literary waves, Pune is home to a few clubs and meet-up groups that encourage your interest in literature and poetry. Every once in a while popular cafes and clubs around the city make space for literary enthusiasts who bring along their
favourite poets’ works, or even original works. There are various poetry clubs in the city that invite the youngsters to share their everyday experiences and humorous anecdotes in verse. TGS caught up with a few poetry clubs in the city that encourages this beautiful hobby.
Gyaan Adab The literary centre is dedicated to bringing masses together through the medium of literature. They have played an important role in promoting the poetry culture in Pune. Gyaan Adab members have regularly organised events like poetry slams, where judges are picked randomly from the audience and people from different professions came together to share their love for poetry. The group even came up with the idea of Poetry Rock, which is a oneof-a-kind concept that blends poetry and music together. A band performed on poems written by Randhir Khare, and the compositions of which were enhanced by the guitar and drums. “We are of the opinion that poetry, in its many shades, lends itself to various forms of presentation. At the centre, we have presented poetry readings of new and established poets in different languages, encouraged poetry by women, presented poetry audio-visuals and have also merged poetry with dance and music,” says Randhir Khare, director, Gyaan Adab. The literary centre recently hosted Bazm-eShayari, an evening of Urdu poetry by renowned poets. “A lot of enthusiasm was shown even by people who don’t speak Urdu. Despite most participants being amateurs, the level of interest never dwindled among the audience,” Randhir adds.

Pune Poetry Slam In November 2013, the Pune Poetry Slam was initiated at a food joint on Fergusson College Road. The first slam was a small event that was organised largely through Facebook. Over the years, the group has grown to host events attended by over 100 people at a time. “The Pune Poetry Slam is an open platform where everyone attending a slam is a member. The slam, though, has over forty regular members, who attend most events. While most members are in the 16-35 age bracket, our oldest slammer is an 84-yearold and we have many senior members in the club,” says Chandrakant Redican, who heads the club. The club hold three to four meet ups every month. The meet ups are conducted at various cafes and venues around Pune. “We hold slams, open mics, workshops and performances. Poetry slams are competitive events where poets compete with each other in front of an audience and judges. An open mic is where people share their work with others in a non-judgmental and close knit environment. Also, we call upon the best poets to showcase their work on a certain theme or topic,” adds Chandrakant.

It is where poetry meets performance. It is basically enacting a poem you have written. Besides, we also conduct shayari sessions — Jay Kumar Shah
Shavita Members of the eight-month-old poetry group, Shavita, claim that they live, breathe, and dream poetry. Every fourth Sunday evening of the month is dedicated to sharing literary anecdotes and poetry recital. Members of the group are an ensemble of budding poets. “We try to cover different topic every month. This month, the theme is Poetry of the God. Last month, we recited poems written by Gulzar. In all, we have around 40 members, of which 20 are active. We dedicate an hour to open floor session where everyone recites their own poetry. Poets talk about everything from personal issues to political opinion. Some of our members have even shared their life experiences, about falling in love or searching for identity, during the slams. It’s all very diverse,” says Jay Kumar Shah, co-founder of the poetry group. Usually, recitals have a planned hour of featured artists followed by an open mic session wherein audience members are invited to perform. These clubs provide space to people who have something to say and share their thoughts. Shavita members also encourage spoken word poetry. “It is where poetry meets performance. It is basically enacting a poem you have written. Besides, we also conduct shayari sessions,” says Jay.
Chandrakiran Kavya Mandal This group is largely comprised of senior citizens, who very enthusiastically participate in poetry reading. They believe reciting poetry helps promote a positive outlook towards aging. The 25-member group gets together once in a month to discuss a poet and his or her poetry. They recite verses penned by new and old Marathi poets. “Poetry programs provide a peaceful and intellectually stimulating time for seniors. They get to share their ideas and thoughts through the beauty of words,” says Suresh Atre, member of the club. Annually, the club organises an outing where the members sit together to pick a topic of interest and write a poem with everyone giving their inputs.
Kalapini Sahitya Manch Fitting a few hour to read poetry in your daily schedule can be an enriching experience for those who harbour a love for the spoken word. To experience the same, Kalapini Sahitya Manch, Talegaon, organises poetry reading sessions every month. Every member is given a chance to recite their own written work as well as discuss their favourite poets. “Our club is nearly 20 years old. We have around 20-25 members participating in the monthly sessions regularly. The one hour meet up is completely dedicated to slam poetry and we fondly called it ‘Ek taas kavitacha’. Members decide on a topic, everyone prepares their verses
and then the poetry is read out loud in front of the audience,” says Vinaya Keskar, who is an active member of the club. Slam Poetry is a dramatic recitation of an original poem. The culture is widely popular among the youth, as they want to share their fresh insight into life. Their recitals usually combine poetry with theatre, dance, and music, making poetry recitation more appealing. “Most members in the club are youngsters. They recite and enact their poetry. Members spend weeks writing, revising and practice reciting their work. They bring their words to life using voice and gestures,” adds Vinaya.

usical instruments are fascinating objects that relate to art and culture as much as they do to acoustics. Music and technology have been rubbing shoulders for a while too. But, with Gramopaint, Milind Sonavane and Sopan Sharma have brought their own perspective to the combination. The two have created an instrument that looks similar to
a gramophone; using it as an arc art generator to make beautiful patterns. The images are generated organically, depending on the input. To ensure you aren’t confused, Sopan explains, “The mechanism is made using two DC (direct current) motors one to spin the base, while the other oscillates the arm back and forth. By changing the speed of the motors with various input modes, you can generate all sorts of crazy patterns.” Milind is an applied arts graduate, and a true innovator at heart. The style den When style and summers combine, clothes get shorter and T-shirts get pushed up the priority list. An evening at a Koregaon Park nightclub was just the place to affirm our claim By Manasi Shroff

alking into a place buzzing with activity sets the party meter up high. Girls in shorts and guys in their comfy tees rested on chairs enjoying an evening out with their buddies. The crowd in the inner section of the nightclub chose to sing along as DJ Sa played some groovy numbers and the ladies took turns to mark their attendance at the little pop up store, The Second Row, that was set up in the vicinity. A little turquoise dress stood out among the ladies who browsed through the store and Aanchal Aggarwal pulled the dress off like a pro. Not to our surprise, she was the one responsible for all the clothes, amazing shoes and bags on display. She surely was a busy girl as she attended to
women who seemed more than excited to shop. A sleek golden belt around her waist was a perfect fit and matching thong sandals fit the summer mood. Her shoulder length hair and long golden earrings defined Aanchal’s look. The bold red lip colour and chunky watch wouldn’t go unnoticed, as the sling across her shoulder only reiterated the casual look. Among the biys out to party was Jayesh Sachdev, co-founder of Quirk Box, who seemed to be quite popular with the crowd. Jayesh hopped around the tables sporting a comfy grey tee with a pair of faded black jeans. The well done hair certainly seemed very impressive. A quirky pair of turquoise kicks turned into the highlight of the look and the black watch was just about enough for him to fit into his eased-out evening attire.

Be a brave fashionista, mix prints! Mixing prints can be a challenging style to master but if done right, you could pull off a hot style
T
he mixed print sensation isn’t going away this season. The vibrant trend goes hand-in-hand with numerous prints, from stripes to polka dots and florals, which have gained popularity this season. Are you usually left wondering how you can mix and match prints without clashing? We caught up with the young and talented fashion designer Sonam Parmar for her expert opinion. MIX AND MATCH Unconventional and unusual prints are hot right now. The prints are taking over classic designs as well. And why shouldn’t they?
Everyone likes a little oomph in their wardrobe. Mixing prints can be tricky as it’s easy to make a fashion faux pas while doing so. But when worn right, nothing matches the style, especially in
summers. One factor mixed prints have in common is that there’s some sort of design element that ties the ensemble together. An easy tip would be to try having a very small similarity between two prints. It could be colour, pattern, or texture. However, for people who love experimenting, two completely opposite prints look extremely bold and fun too. Prints can be mixed in various
PAIR IT RIGHT Pairing prints doesn’t mean just throwing together a top with a skirt. Printed accessories add that extra zing to an ensemble. It’s ice creams, croissants for Aishwarya at Cannes Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who is enjoying her stay here for the 68th Cannes International Film Festival, says she loves to indulge in ice creams and croissants at the French Riviera. While she is missing out on enjoying a soothing swim in the luxurious pool at the Hotel Martinez due to her packed schedule, the 41-yearold actress always ensures a trip to grab an ice cream and croissants from a local vendor here. “I know there is a red carpet here but I enjoy my croissants and ice creams. I enjoy life and live in the moment. You should do it too, “Aishwarya said in a behindthe-scenes video made by cosmetic brand L’Oreal Paris, which she is representing at the film extravaganza. On her trip to Cannes, Aishwarya is accompanied by her three-and-half-yearold daughter Aaradhya, and mother Vrinda. The ‘Devdas’ actress says she always sneaks out of her hotel along with her daughter to spend time together on a carousel in a park close by, away from the paparazzi. Meanwhile, the former beauty queen also launched the first look of her comeback film ‘Jazbaa’ at the festival. ‘Jazbaa’, directed by Sanjay Gupta, is produced by Essel Vision, and is set to release worldwide on October 9. Taylor Swift’s love tale
Singer Taylor Swift and Scottish DJ Calvin Harris have confirmed their relationship by kissing at the Billboard Music Awards. The couple were seen sharing several romantic gestures at the Billboard Music Awards here on Sunday. Harris kept one arm tucked behind Swift, and then the “Summer” hitmaker gave Swift a congratulatory smooch when she was announced as the winner of the coveted Top 200
Album award for her fifth studio album “1989”, reports femalefirst.co.uk. The kiss wasn’t the only time the couple were seen getting close and personal during the ceremony, as they celebrated the slew of nine awards they won between them with other displays of affection, including Harris wrapping his arms around the 25-year-old singer. Swift — who wore a low-cut, white, Balmain jumpsuit to the event at the MGM Grand
Garden Arena — is rumoured to have started their relationship after meeting the hunk at a BRIT Awards after-party in London in February, and they were recently seen enjoying an intimate date in Los Angeles. The “Bad Blood” singer is set to have a busy few months as she tours the US, and a source had revealed that she has factored time into her hectic schedule to see her beau. IANS

Emma Stone, Andrew Garfield back together? Actors Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield have sparked rumours that they have rekindled their relationship after having split last month. Stone, who split from the British actor last month after three years of dating, was reportedly spotted holding hands with him in Malibu, California, earlier this week. The couple seemed to be having a great time as they enjoyed a romantic date at the Malibu Farm restaurant, an eyewitness told eonline.com. The two were said to have ended their romance due to the 31-year-old actor’s dedication to his role as a 17th century Jesuit in the upcoming film “Silence”, which he began shooting in Taiwan in January. An insider previously said: “(Emma) ended things and moved back to Los Angeles. It’s finished. It’s not just a break. He’d been in a dark place for months, getting into his role. He wasn’t being the best partner.” IANS
Ayushmann likes to take it slow on career front Ayushmann Khurrana, who made a successful Bollywood debut with “Vicky Donor” in 2012, doesn’t want to go on a film-signing spree. After the success of his “unusual Yash Raj Films’ movie without gloss and chiffon saris” titled “Dum Laga Ke Haisha”, which followed three duds including Rohan Sippy’s “Nautanki Saala!”, Ayushmann has two more films in hand. And he is okay with that. “I’ve been always very careful about scripts, but you can’t predict (which one will work). My next two films (‘Agra Ka Daabra’ and untitled Yash Raj Films’ movie) are very important,” Ayushmann, who is reteaming with his “Vicky Donor” team — producer John Abraham and director Shoojit Sircar — for “Agra Ka Daabra”, told IANS. “I don’t know which one I’ll be filming first. The shooting is ex-
pected to be in winter and it will release next year,” he added. The father of two, who is also a singer, says he likes to be selective. “I take it slow. I’ve always been very selective. I am also doing gigs and coming out with a single. I am composing something very fresh. I like to take it easy. Personal life is not a botheration in my film or music career. “My family is in Chandigarh. I travel a lot,” said the actor, who will also co-host IIFA Rocks, an exclusive music extravaganza, with Parineeti Chopra in June in Kuala Lumpur. IANS
