Film: Sex Tapes Cast: Jason Segel, Cameron Diaz, Rob Corddry, Rob Lowe and Ellie Kemper; Director: Jake Kasdan Director: Jake Kasdan

By Troy Ribeiro The Sanskrit proverb Vinaash kaale vipreet buddhi (When your end comes, wisdom is the first casualty) aptly describes director Jake Kasdan’s Sex Tapes. I was not upset with my daughter’s lesbianism, but I was upset with the fact that when she suspected she was different, she was too scared to confide in me. This is something all children face because they are not given the space to think. They are constantly under pressure and worry about disappointing their parents. As my daughter grew up, she realised that nothing was wrong with her. She became confident and wanted to live an honest, open life. So, she confided in me. If you try to instil the same kind of confidence in your child, no person — whether bisexual, homosexual or transgender — would suffer just because they are different. and stigma, but I worried whether they would insult or hurt my child. I realised that since my child has done nothing wrong, there is no need for me to be afraid. My love for my daughter is more important than ‘What will people say’. If someone makes a negative comment, I just reply confidently with the correct facts. I became informed to deal with such people. I keep in mind two things: Firstly, that she’s my daughter and I love her regardless of her sexual preferences. Secondly, sexuality is a private part of a person and you can’t judge someone based on it. Hence, I was never scared of answering questions such as ‘When is your daughter getting married?” Eventually, Shalmalee told everyone herself and it became easier to deal with the extended family and social circle. If we pay more heed to the love we have for our children than what the world thinks, we wouldn’t lose them to depression or suicide. Most homosexuals go through a self-harm phase after parental rejection. I was never depressed as I know my child has many talents. Her sexual orientation is only a part of her life. If we look at out child’s positive qualities and don’t negate them for their sexuality, it becomes easier to deal with the situation. A radical fear which most parents face is that of not having grandchildren. Whether your child wants children or not is their choice, regardless of their sexuality. Besides, now with advanced medical science, it is possible for gays and lesbians to have children through surrogacy or through a sperm-donor. Adoption is also a choice, although the laws are restrictive. It is the inclination which is crucial. Homosexuality is natural; it is neither a physical nor a mental disease. This is now accepted by international medical bodies such as World Health Organisation. Society’s prejudice is based on misinformation, myth and outdated morality. It has not come from the West; there are references to it in our ancient culture. If you force your children to live a lie, they will never be happy. Your children need your acceptance and support. Give it so they can flower. It is very crucial that we parents share information so that the prejudice towards homosexuals reduces, and society embraces them.”

Mothers and Daughters: I See You In Me A photography exhibition that celebrates the mother-daughter bond

here is nothing more resonant in human nature than the flow of energy between two biologically alike bodies, one of which has lain in amniotic bliss inside the other, one of which has laboured to give birth to the other. The materials are here for the deepest mutuality and the most painful estrangement. OF WOMEN BORN, Adrienne Rich On the occasion of International Day of the Girl Child on October 11, Pune-based photographer and artist Uma Dhanwatey organised a photography exhibition entitled, ExtraOrdinary Women, ‘I See You In Me’ at Independence Brewing Co, Mundhwa. The photographs include portraits of motherdaughter duos experiencing life separately and together, with each other. The project aims to draw attention to the issue of women’s empowerment and how the mother-daughter bond plays a crucial role in empowering

each other. The artist wants to show that all women face similar struggles in self-actualisation and need the help of their closest counterparts (mothers) to succeed. The mother-daughter pairs, photographed in black and white, include authors Sonja Chandrachud, Sudha Menon, and a cancer survivor teen and her mother, three pairs from Hope For the Children Foundation (HFCF), a NGO working to empower underprivileged girls and their mothers. Proceeds from the sale of the photographs will go to HFCF. The Method The subjects were urged to speak about issues of safety, boundaries, and expression at home and the outside world. Does the mother see her daughter grow into a certain role that she chooses or does she let her daughter choose her role? How does an empowered mother eventually empower her daughter? What are the sentiments she passes on to her daughter about being a woman?

The Artist in her own words The idea for this portrait series came from the process of examining my own bond with my mother and its dynamics; how it has shaped me as a woman and how it still influences who I am today. The feeling that most mothers feel of being alone in the responsibility of raising their children and whether they know how to or not, or whether they choose it or not, can be shared with their daughters in an intimate way, creating a more self aware and empowered generation of women. The idea is to bring back the inherent worth of being a woman, not based on the labels that a patriarchal society has placed on us, but living from the inside out, from deep within. I wish to continue this photo series, exploring issues of women’s health, aspirations, gender inequality, domestic violence and sexual health.

About Uma Dhanwatey Uma worked with Childline India, in Mumbai after doing her Masters in Social Work. Her desire to explore her creative side drew her to photography and she assisted ace photographers Farrokh Chotia and Girish Mistry in Mumbai while working on her own, doing portfolios and street photography. She later pursued Masters in Communications from the State University of New York, Albany. Subsequently, Uma honed her skills at the International Center of Photography, New York, where she worked for two years. The mainstay of her work is with people in the fields of fashion, documentary and portraiture. She has worked with the Times of India, and with other private clients.

wenty-five-year-old Richa Mahendra moved to Pune from Dubai, to complete her graduation at the Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce (BMCC), in 2007. This was Richa's first experience of living away from her family, on her own, in an unfamiliar city. She says, "Even though I was on my own, I never felt unsafe in Pune. My room-mate had a bike that we used to go around on. After spending a year in Pune, I can say that Pune is a safe place, unlike other cities. Here, girls can go out to a late night dinner or movie, without having to worry about safety and security." Once Richa's room-mate's bike got punctured when they were in the Pune station late at night. "It was about 2am but we found a tyre repair shop. We had to wait for some time before the puncture was fixed. We were the only two females out there at that late hour. But not a

Satara resident, 26-year-old Abhilasha Ranjeet Chavan came to Pune four years ago, to do her MBA at the MIT. Abhilasha travelled from Sinhagad to the Phase III area of Hinjewadi, for her internship. "I had to travel 25-30 km daily and I did not have a bike of my own. Since I was an intern, I wasn't eligible for the company bus service. Hinjewadi, Wakad, Chandni Chowk are rather fringe areas of the city and not having one's own vehicle is a real problem as bus services are very unreliable, as I experienced," she says. Abhilasha attracted quite a lot of unwanted attention and stares from the male populace, which made her feel not just uncomfortable but downright unsafe. "I just

feigned ignorance of the stares, and at times even walked away to what I thought was a safe distance. It is essential for women to have their own vehicles in Pune. It is not advisable to rely on public transport, especially in unsafe areas like Hinjewadi," says Abhilasha. The issue of women's safety is not restricted to any particular place and every girl should take care to not put herself in any danger or threat, Abhilasha feels. "Women should not take their safety for granted. Irrespective of which city they are in, they must be careful as bad things can happen without a warning. Our safety is our prime responsibility. Women should never disclose their phone numbers at malls, restaurants or shops, as I have been harassed often with prank calls," she says. Women's safety has been in the spotlight especially after the 2007 Jyotikumari Chaudhari and 2009 Naina Pujari rape and murder incidents. The Pune Police has intensified its vigilance in this regard. The police initiatives include: a) Setting up a counter at the station with a woman constable in attendance; b) Preventing eve teasing by setting up squads at schools, colleges and other likely places; c) Patrolling by motorcycle-borne mahila beat marshalls with walkie talkie, carbine etc at banks, malls, societies and other sensitive places; d) Mobile patrolling; e) Setting up of a 24x7 helpline for women, with a toll free single number and a back office social legal support system to provide assistance to victims;
