ollywood’s new entrant in the Chopra club Mannara Chopra is biding her time. The actress, who happens to be Priyanka Chopra’s cousin, made her debut last year with Anubhav Sinha’s ‘Zid’ and has since got a few offers. Though the film didn’t do well at the box office, her portrayal of an obsessive lover was appreciated by the audience. Mannara says she had bagged the opportunity because of her own talent and not for her superstar cousin Priyanka. “I was adamant to do a Hindi film and thus went on giving auditions. I don’t think anyone will give me a film just because I am Priyanka’s sister. I got selected and was judged on the basis of my talent,” she says. Her original name being Barbie Handa, she started her career in modeling. She has done about 13 commercials, three of them with Priyanka Chopra. “I have been lucky to get good modeling offers. To get into the industry I thought of having a screen name. I discussed

he actor apologises profusely for not standing up to greet us. He is suffering from a severe backache, so Gulshan Devaiah has been advised to keep his movement limited. Yet, the Hunterrr actor was in the city for a private event. As it turns out, Pune is Gulshan’s favourite city so he doesn’t miss a chance to drop in. “I absolutely love Pune for two reasons — my film Hunterrr was extensively shot here and, more importantly, I fell in love with my wife in Koregaon Park’s lane number four,” smiles Gulshan as he sips on extra-strong cappuccino. A fashion design graduate, Gulshan always wanted to be an actor so he packed his bags and moved to Mumbai. He knew it was not going to be easy and he was prepared for the ordeal. “I knew I had to be patient. I have always held a simple thought, ‘Wait for it to come to you’. If I became desperate I would end up doing some shitty stuff. Even today, I consciously avoid repeating myself. After playing KC in Shaitaan, I had numerous offers for similar roles. Everyone wanted me to play a drug addict or someone with a funky hairstyle,” says the actor, who believes

that people should want to work with him rather than him begging for work. Gulshan is married to the beautiful, Greek actor Kalliroi Tziafeta. Kalliroi and Gulshan met in Lucknow but fell in love over two days in Pune. She is currently seen in Mahakumbh on Star TV. “We discuss work but I take decisions on my own. She only helped me make a decision about Ram Leela. I was warned against working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali but my wife sensed that the film would do wonders for me and the rest is history.” Cabaret, Love Affair, Ishq Uncensored, Candy Flip and Junooniyat are his upcoming projects. “I am a complex person. I am not very easy to understand. I do things in phases. So, for a while I will enjoy swimming, then cooking will interest me. I love shopping, to the extent that it is almost like my hobby.” Gulshan is an only child and his success in Bollywood hasn’t made his parents treat him any differently. “They like to boast about my success among relatives and are proud that I am doing well in the film industry. But when I’m alone, my mother still gives me financial advice and long lectures on how and where I should invest my money,” he reveals, candidly. anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

this with my family. Mannara is a Greek name, which means ‘something that shines’”. When asked if she discusses her projects with Priyanka Chopra before taking the final call, she says, “I meet people for work, but yes I always looked up to my sister and consult her before signing the film. We share a strong bond. It’s always good to take someone’s guidance. And she has been in the industry for years now, so her views are important to me, but I take the final decision”. Mannara, however, is not wary of the comparisons she will have to face with her actress cousins. “There is so much competition in the industry, why should one take it inside the family. I always have my own zone. A film takes a year or two to be made, and every Friday a new film releases, so there can’t be any competition. I compete with myself,” she said. The Dabur Amla Hair Oil ad won her an instant recognition. She has made her debut with a Telugu movie, ‘Prema Geema Jantha Nai’ which later paved way for her into Bollywood. “I have really worked hard to be where I am now. The highpoint of my career was when my performance in Zid was appreciated. Though there are tough times too, but they pass with time” she adds. So what are her upcoming projects? “Right now I am open to films of all kinds as long as I love the script and the setup. Currently, I am busy shooting for commercials. But I have a south movie and a Hindi film in the pipeline.” zainab.kantawala@goldensparrow.com

Didn’t twist original story for ABCD 2: Remo D’Souza Director Remo D’Souza says his movie “ABCD 2” is based on the true life story of a ‘Fictitious Dance Academy’, and that he has not made any changes to the story as he found it “interesting” and “inspiring”. “This film is based on a true story. It’s the story of Fictitious Dance Academy from Nalasopara that went all the way from a small town to win a dance show in Las Vegas,” Remo said here. Fictitious Dance Academy, headed by Suresh and Vernon, fought out to win reality shows like “Boogie Woogie”, “India’s Got Talent 3” and also made it to the finals of World Hip Hop Championship Dance Academy in 2012. Remo said: “I didn’t twist their story much as this original story was so good and inspiring.” In “ABCD 2”, Varun Dhawan plays Suresh and did extensive rehearsals to get into Suresh’s mode of dancing. The film is a sequel to Remo’s 2013 dancebased 3D film “ABCD - AnyBody Can Dance” and also features Shraddha Kapoor, choreographer-director Prabhudheva and international dancer Lauren Gottlieb. — IANS

e tucks his gold-rimmed sunglasses in the collar of his shirt, just like his role model Salman Khan, aka Sallu Bhai, and his conversations are sprinkled with Sallu Bhai’s dialogues. Akshat Singh introduces himself as, “Sallu Bhai ka chota bhai, Akshat Bhai.” The little dancing star has attained recognition with his stint on the TV show, India’s Got Talent 5, and now he is getting ready to participate at an even bigger platform, Asia’s Got Talent. “The makers of Asia’s Got Talent saw the videos of my performance on Youtube and liked my dancing style. So they invited me to participate here,” says the little performer. The plump youngster shot to fame

all thanks to his Chota Salman act. “I participated in the television channel to show the country that a motu (chubby kid) can also dance,” he says. Akshat has taken the internet by storm by showing off his splits, vaults and backflip moves. He was also invited to the American chat show, Ellen DeGeneres Show, where he was interviewed and asked to show some of his best moves. “One of the producers on Ellen’s show saw me performing to some Salman Khan songs, and liked me. I had a lot of fun. It was exciting to go to America,” he recalls. The Bollywood superstar is more than just Akshat’s idol. “I have seen all of Sallu Bhai’s movies and I like them all, especially Dabbang. I want to work with him one day. I wish he would cast me for Dabbang 3.” The love for the actor clearly emerged from watching quite a bit of TV. Although,

Akshat claims to balance his study time and TV time quite well. “Everybody watches TV, so why won’t I? I complete my studies on time too.” Indeed, Akshat is a bright kid at school. After coming home from school he attends classes, then the afternoon is spent practicing dance, and evenings are dedicated to play. On weekends, Akshat spends most of his time watching Salman Khan films and learning his dance moves as well as dialogues. If Akshat is stressed about participating in the talent show then he isn’t one to reveal his moods. Instead, he prefers talking about the people he has met at the international show, “The competition is very tough but I have made a number of friends here. Some of them have taught me western dance moves and in return I have taught them Indian classical dance steps. I am enjoying it here.” zainab.kantawala@goldensparrow.com

he Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class is a sexy looking four-door coupe, with an eyecatching design that got you noticed. It originally came with a 300bhp V6 petrol motor to help things along. Mercedes-Benz has now married that svelte design to its mainstream motor – the 2.1-litre four-pot diesel. The CLS has always been upmarket, and tands at a cusp where luxury meets sportiness and its design reflects that persona well, thanks to its coupe-like stance. It is strictly a four-seater, so practicality isn’t exactly its forte, but being stylish is. Mercedes thinks a smaller diesel motor and a better price will help boost its appeal as a fashionable four-door coupe that’s also relatively affordable to live with. For 2015, the CLS-Class has been given a mid-life facelift to bring it in line with the newer Mercs. This was the very car that spawned the four-door coupe segment, and it continues to be a looker with its stunning design. The dark blue hue of our test car didn’t seem to do justice to the design though, and a brighter colour would perhaps have enhanced its sexiness. accentuating the appeal with its subtleties like a matte black grille, 18-inch matte black, diamond cut wheels, satin finished mirrors in silver and twin exhausts with the rear diffuser. Inside, it gets a new 3-spoke leather clad steering wheel, an all-black theme with black seats and lots of R-Design badges. The seats are easily the best in class, bettering the competition with their comfort and soft, plush feel. The centre console continues with the floating theme, though it looks busy with a lot of buttons and there’s a lot of functionality thrown in, just like the rival German cars. The 7-inch display offers navigation and lets you connect to the internet, while the all-digital instrument cluster allows you to choose from three themes like before. The S60 also gets an uprated version of the D4, Volvo’s fourcylinder diesel motor producing 179bhp along with a healthy 400Nm of torque. Subjectively, performance feels better than before. The new eight-speed transmission feels slick, shifting gears discreetly, though I did feel one too many jerks while using the paddles. The engine feels smooth without much clatter at low revs, and

is barely audible at speeds as the transmission optimises gear changes to that effect. The S60 is a nice, engaging car to drive, and the only fly in the ointment is the front-wheel drive. There’s a bit of torque steer when taking off from standstill, but it never gets worrisome. The 235/40 R18 tyres offer good grip, with a fine balance between ride and handling. This is a Volvo, a brand known to make some of the safest cars, and the S60 comes with an array of driver aids including City Safety, where even if you are distracted, the car will brake automatically if it senses an impending accident. And if India had any lane discipline, we could use the Lane Departure Warning. It even has a water repellent coating on the side windows for better visibility in the rains. Given what the S60 is and what it brings to the table, it is a bit surprising that we don’t see too many on the road. Especially since the R-Design variant you see here retails at `40.25 lakh ex-showroom New Delhi, which is in the same ballpark as the top variants of the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and MercedesBenz C-Class. abhay@evo.in

Pune

a rising hub for sports education

Bharat FC team during a practice session

Pune is slowly but steadily becoming a hub for sports management courses. With Australia’s Deakin University being the latest entrant in the city, TGS Life takes a look at four institutes that offer offbeat, sporty career options By Anjali Shetty-Shirsath & Ashish Phadnis @shetty_anjali @phadnis_ashish

A

few years ago, a career in sports would have been considered a pipe dream, despite national icons such as Sachin Tendulkar having made a go of it. There would have been little support forthcoming from peers or family, as is usually the case even today. However, you don’t have to have the potential to be the world’s best batsman to have a career in sports. The mushrooming of sports management institutes is an indicator that India is opening up to the idea of a career in sports. Following suit is Pune. A few weeks ago, Pune was introduced to Deakin University, Australia through the Rajasthan Royals IPL team. The university will be the Royals’ official Sports Education Partner during the upcoming Indian Premier League 2015. Mike Ewing, professor, Deakin University elaborates, “Career opportunities in sport management have expanded considerably in the past ten years. Sports includ-

ing Australian Rules football, basketball, cricket, tennis and golf, plus national and state sporting organisations all require professionally trained and academically qualified people to work for them.” It’s curious how a career in sports isn’t taken seriously in our country where cricket attracts religious fervour. Parents’ constant refrain will be, ‘there is no money or future in it’. Providing a platform for aspiring sportsmen and just about anyone interested in sports are Deakin University, the Institute of Sports Science and Technology, the Abhijit Kadam Football Development Centre (AKFDC) and the College of events and media management. Former cricketer, Rahul Dravid says, “Indian landscape is changing with regards to sports and careers in it. I think we should look at this as an opportunity to get exposure to the sport. We can get back knowledge and utilise it in our country.” Kuldeep Gaikwad, director, AKFDC adds, “Pune is fast becoming a hub for sports as a career. We at AKFDC have tied up with the best in the world to provide a platform for aspiring players and coaches.”

Pune FC team practicing on field

Institute of Sports Science and Technology (ISST) To provide a launchpad for those who wish to make a career in sports-related fields, Vipul and Ujwala Lunawat formed the Institute of Sports Science and Technology (ISST), under the leadership of former dean of Savitribai Phule Pune University in 2008. The institute, situated at Karve road, offers various professional courses in sports management and allied sports and fitness education, to develop athletes, managers and other sport-support staff. ISST mainly offers distance education courses such as the Distance Masters Programme in Sports Management (DMPSM), Distance Diploma in Sports Management (DDSM), Distance Diploma in Sports Sciences (DDSS), Distance Diploma in Sports & Exercise Psychology (DDSEP) and Distance Diploma in Sports & Exercise Nutrition (DCSEN) along with classroom course like the

post graduate diploma in sports management. The course duration is between six months to one year. All courses at ISST have student accreditation status from the International Sports Professionals Association (ISPA), Chicago, USA. ISST have also tied up with VMax Sports & Fitness, Gold’s Gym and Kaveri Sports Centre, Erandwane to run a sports academy. Students are offered internships in Gun for Glory Shooting Academy, Pune, Lakshya, sports NGS in Pune , Sports Mechanics, Chennai, Della Adventures, Lonavala, Percept D’Mark, Mumbai, Rhiti Sports, New Delhi and Mumbai and Pune Football Club (PFC). They are also forming a adventure academy in Igatpuri, Nashik. In 2010, ISST also started Pune Cyber Gaming (PCG) to promote e-sports, which is a fast growing sport segment internationally.

Abhijit Kadam Football Development Centre Bharati Vidyapeeth is another educational institute making strides in sports education. Together with Liverpool FC – the most successful football club in the history of English football, the FA - English football’s governing body and UK-based company KickWorldwide, they’ve established Abhijit Kadam Football Development Centre. The idea was to create professional International Coaches, Sports Science and Management professionals in India and to identify future international playing talent as well. Students at the Centre can choose from several sports-based and career-oriented professional coaching courses, which have been designed in consultation with leading UK-based educational institutions. The courses on offer include Coaching, Refereeing, Sports Science, Sports Turf Technology and Football Industry Management. While most of the curriculum will be delivered on the Pune campus, students here will be

Sandesh Bhoite

offered the chance to complete a part of their course in the UK with affiliated institutions. On offer is the FA International Foundation Refereeing Course. It is taught by international faculty, who will be travelling down to The AKFDC, Pune to conduct these courses. Anyone completing the course in India will be recognised as a qualified referee in England and as such will be able to take up the whistle immediately. Alumnus speak: Sandesh Bhoite,

36, coach, Deccan Rovers “I walk into my job space with track pants and a t-shirt. What more could I ask for?” quips Sandesh, who completed FA Course 1 and 2 from AFKDC. “The course taught me how a coach should be able to develop a player from the grassroot level. Unfortunately, in India, football is not given much regard. The reason being lack of good coaches. So, we need good coaches to get good players.” Sandesh has been coaching the Deccan Rovers for two years now. “When you are in such an interesting field you get to live your passion. We don’t get bored. There is a routine and things are planned, yet it is exciting.” Sandesh adds that coaching is a well-paid job and you can live a satisfactory lifestyle. “As you grow in the field, you end up making more money. I cannot put a bracket or slab on how much you can earn. But it is definitely a great platform to experiment with.”

DEAKIN UNIVERSITY The global focus on sport participation and active lifestyles also highlights the importance of exercise to modern health. Deakin’s sport and exercise courses offer career variety, exposure to groundbreaking research and a network of graduates already working in the industry. Physical attendance is not a must to pursue courses. You can apply for their courses online and complete them in a stipulated period. “We have digital education which we call cloud education. Here, we do not differentiate between offline and online students,” shared Jane den Hollander, vice chancellor and president, Deakin University, Australia. In addition, there is a need for qualified people to manage sports facilities at the local level as well as for national and international competitions. Deakin’s Master of Business (Sport Management) develops a comprehensive understanding of the integration of business disciplines in the effective management of sport and the leadership to provide effective management and direction to sporting organisations . Deakin’s Bachelor of Business (Sport Management) provides the skills needed for graduates to effectively manage sport organisations regardless of the context

of its business. For example, a Deakin graduate will be job-ready for work in sport events, professional sport, community sport, the sporting goods industry, as well as in government sectors involved in sport. The ability to apply management and marketing theories and business principles generally within a leisure framework is a core feature of the degree. An honours year is available upon completion of this degree. Alumnus speak: Matt Bolitho, Sports Management graduate, employed at IER PTY LTD “I did legal studies, business management, accounting and economics at school and the sports side partnered up well – it was my perfect match. We did a lot that translated into real-life situations and it was really important to know that what I was learning I could definitely apply.” Matt completed three internships during his course and benefited from all three, particularly enjoying his stint with Water Polo Australia. He absolutely loves his job and urges others to make the most of their opportunities.

Several sports associations like Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA), Maharashtra State Basketball Association (MSBA) and the Pune District Football Association conduct regular seminars and exams to produce qualified referees, umpires and coaches. Many aspiring youth have taken these courses and are now working full-time in various academies in city. “Last year, we conducted a level I coaching camp in Pune. The International Basketball Federation’s (FIBA) coaching instructor guided 20 coaches in Pune. On-court practical sessions along with theoretical sessions were part of this camp. Now we are taking one step ahead and will conduct a level II camp this year,” says MSBA treasurer Lalit Nahata. Apart from coaches and umpires, technical officials for sports are also in demand. “The city has gained a good reputation in technical fields too. Half of the Indian badminton officials who officiate in international level tournaments come from Pune. This is a big achievement,” said Pune District Metropolitan Badminton Association secretary Uday Sane.

COEM College of Event Management (COEM) was founded in 2004 and along with event management and mass communication courses, they offer various full and part time sports management courses. They include a Post Graduate Master Level Program, advanced diploma, intermediate diploma and part time certificate courses in sports management. COEM’s School of Sports Management operates from their Koregaon Park Campus, while classes are conducted at both Koregaon and Prabhat road campuses. As per the COEM website, their courses cover sports development, coaching, media and PR. Apart from mainstream sports such as cricket, football, boxing and hockey, their students have worked on sports events as diverse as motorcross, watersports, women’s rugby and paragliding.

This dancer’s story will amaze you Battling all sorts of odds, Prerna Sahane has achieved what no one thought she could. Hers is a story of determination and inspiration By Barnalee Handique @barnalee

P

rerna Sahane’s mudras and enchanting smile speak a thousand words. Her eyes are fixed on her guru, Shumita Mahajan, as she follows every move-

ment, as directed. Throughout the rehearsal for the solo performance, Prerna does not miss a single beat. Prerna can neither speak nor hear since birth yet, at a very young age, she would dance when she saw Bollywood songs. Her mother, Ujwala Dixit, knew Prerna had the talent, but didn’t know how to go about nurturing it. A performance, in the school where Ujwala taught, gave her an idea. Impressed by a student’s dance recital, the teacher enquired about her teacher and the student guided Ujwala to her guru, Shumita Mahajan, who has been training dancers in Bharat Natyam since the last 25 years. Shumita was reluctant at first,

but accepted Prerna as a student when she was only eight years old. She ensured Prerna practised with all the other students. For months, Prerna would only practice simple steps like tapping her feet but since she was a keen learner, the young girl watched other students practice and followed them. Shumita was convinced that Prerna would lose interest within a year and would leave. But Prerna proved her teacher wrong. She was very passionate about dance and never missed her classes. Everyday, Prerna’s father, Keshav, would drop and collect her from the dance class. Eventually, an incident changed the Shumita’s perspective towards her

guru for good. “We were practicing for a performance and the countdown had already begun. My students were not up to the mark even after repeated sessions. Angry and frustrated, I asked my students to leave. The students were agitated, some were even crying. After they left, Prerna approached me and enquired what had gone wrong? When I explained to her what the problem was, she performed the same sequence so well, that I was emotionally moved. I realised that I had been neglecting her all this while.” The challenge triggered Shumita and she decided to devote extra time towards Prerna. No doubt, the young dancer needed extra time to learn the steps, but she

was a patient learner. It took her 16 years to complete her course and she participated in her public, on-stage graduation in 2002. It has been 22 years since then and Shumita has introduced numerous new concepts while teaching Prerna. She has even learned the sign language from Ujwala to communicate with Prerna. In fact, sometimes when it becomes impossible to make her understand, Ujwala had to be called in explain certain concepts to the young girl. For Prerna, eye contact was very important. “When I first made her wear the ghungroos, she had no control over it. Gradually, she understood the vibration and it became easier for her to follow taal. While performing, the guru is supposed to sit on the side of the stage, but for Prerna I sit in the pit so that she can watch my eyes,” explains Shumita. When Prerna performs, special lighting arrangements are made and when a certain colour of light blinks or changes, the dancer knows that she has to change her pose. Last year, Prerna got married and right now she is preparing for her Visharad, or second-year, exams in dance. Her dream is to become a professional dancer soon. barnalee.handique @goldensparrow.com

She hasn’t trained to be a filmmaker but that hasn’t stopped Mrunalini Bhosle from commanding the camera to fulfill her wishes

ocumentary and feature filmmaker, Mrunalini Bhosle is busy creating a marketing strategy for her latest film, Kapus Kondyachi Goshta. The film is nearly a year old and has toured international film festivals, however, hasn’t released in India yet. She was keen on gathering feedback from an international audience before showcasing her work in India. In fact, on the basis of its merit, the movie even made it to the Oscars this year, in the open category. While shooting for a documentary in Vidharba, Mrunalini came across three sisters and their story inspired the filmmaker to make a movie. Kapus Kondyachi Goshta, therefore, portrays how women can achieve anything if they set their mind on it. It also deals with the topic of sexual and mental harassment that a woman has to deal with. Kapus Kondyachi Goshta is Mrunalini’s first feature film. She has made over 50 agriculture-related documentaries and has won many national, and international,

awards. She has also won the President’s Award for her documentary on organic farming. The documentaries are made in Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati. Soon, they will be translated for the benefit of farmers in South India. But Mrunalini’s journey into the world of films is quite interesting. “I have never watched a movie in my life. I never thought that I will get into movie making. I was happy assisting my husband as he worked on the agriculture magazine, Baliraja. We would discuss various issues related to agriculture. The magazine was widely accepted in the farmer’s community and we received a positive response. Farmers often visited our office with queries. Time and again, they would request us to create videos to help understand a subject better,” reveals the 45-year-old. Though reluctant at first, Mrunalini decided to give it a try after attending a 10-day crash course in videography. Initially, the documentaries were made on a trial and error basis but they informed farmers about various crops, how a particular crop would have to be nurtured, and pesticides that must be avoided. Through

these informative documentaries, Mrunalini wanted to reach out to the grass root levels of the farming community. While working on the documentaries, the filmmaker also consults scientists, NRC, Agricultural University and other agricultural specialists before scripting a film. After gathering information about a particular crop, her team helps collate the matter. It takes about eight months to a year to complete filming a documentary. Mrunalini explains,“Every crop has a different cycle. There are seven stages of farming and we have to film all the different aspects. For that, we have to visit the

site four to five times in a year.” The aim of creating the documentaries, Mrunalini says, is that they should help farmers understand the need for new practices in cultivation. The filmmaker usually funds her films herself — a single documentary costs about `3 lakhs. The documentaries are available for `99, per CD. Mrunalini’s future plans include making more feature films and launching an agricultural channel. Infact, she has already finalised two scripts and will start shooting soon after the launch of Kapus Kondyachi Goshta. feedback.tgs@goldensparrow.com

Why bother with canvas when you have an entire wall

he tribal art-inspired wall painting created by 19-yearold Kasturi Divakar at a residence in Chandni Chowk is quirky and interesting. A variety of tribal motifs in different colours converge on the 30 ft by 9 ft wall. When she was given the assignment, Kasturi took a while choosing the right design. She had many ideas in her mind but she finally decided to go with the tribal art design. Completing the large-format painting took a couple of weeks since the designs had to be stencilled onto the wall and then coloured. It might seem like a rather cumbersome process to most, but painting walls gives the young artist a different thrill. Kasturi says that she answer a yearning when she gets down to painting a wall, “I have an inexplicable urge to paint on walls. It is not like sketching or painting on a canvas. It is challenging to paint huge walls as it needs intense concentration and attention.” The painting, at the Chandni Chowk home, was created using a water-based commercial wall paints which are similar to acrylic colours. It took about three weeks to complete the painting. For Kasturi, painting is akin to praying -- the first stroke of the brush is like the first word spoken, making a lasting im-

‘I want to be the Stephen King of Indian fiction’ For author, columnist, ad film director and National Award winner, Madhuri Banerjee, writing is like climbing to the highest peak in the Himalayas By Anjali Shetty-Shirsath @shetty_anjali

A

great writer not only writes what is known but what is observed and interpreted from an experience. Author, columnist and ad film director Madhuri Banerjee’s writing conforms with this observation. Her books are a work of pop-fiction that feature identifiable characters. Madhuri claims her latest book, My Clingy Girlfriend, has been declared a success. The book’s readers might find it interesting that its story is based on a true incident. “In a casual chat, a

friend shared how his girlfriend does not allow him to go for night-outs with his guy friends. His girlfriend would tag along if he did go out and hence the guy lost most of his friends. I was amused by his saga and spoke to my girl friends about it. That is when I found there are many such women, who believe that just because they are a couple everything has to be done together. I researched the subject and spoke to many men. I threw in all these instances and put the book together,” says the 40-year-old author. According to the author, most of her women readers too have enjoyed reading the book and haven’t been

offended. “I have truly attempted humour and kept it fictional although most of the incidents are based on true stories. My books do mirror society but they also reflect my imagination. Every word is funny and irreverent from the book’s lead character, Obrokranti’s point of view,” says Banerjee, who is not influenced or inspired by anyone. She believes she has her own tone and style of writing. Although, most books by the author seem like chick-lit, Banerjee has high hopes about her future. She compares herself to the American, pop-fiction writer, Stephen King. “I want to be the Stephen King of Indi-

an fiction. I want to be able to write as prolifically as he has been able to. I would like to be compared to no one else but him. The range of topics he has been able to write on has been great and that is the range I hope I am able to achieve too,” she says. Even so the author does go through moments of doubt when she wishes she could change certain as-

pects of her books. “If I had to change anything it would be Advantage Love. I would like to make it slightly more political and date it back to the 90s but my publishers wanted a love story based in today’s time. I am pretty happy with the sales, criticism and writing in the rest of the books.” Banerjee is now venturing into television but can’t reveal much till the production house does not make an official announcement. “I am not here to be a time-bound success. We are all taught to write what you know in creative writing classes. Many authors turn their first books very autobiographical and the book does well because it is true and honest. Then the commercial aspect starts creeping in and then you try to figure out on how much more you can draw from my own life. But that is where you will go wrong, a lot lies in imagination and how you tell a great story. Go beyond what you know,” advises the author. anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

Short asymmetrical hair cuts are in Stylist Shackya Nanda shares the latest hair trends and hot hair colours for this season

Style Tips

I

ndian summers are hot! The weather conditions demand that one should pay extra attention towards hair care in this season. This is also the time when most people prefer to get a haircut. The ideal length of the hair should be above the shoulder. This hairstyle cut in layers can be left open or tied up when required. If one wants to go really short, then asymmetrical hair cuts are in. This cut works great for people with lean faces. To complement a smart haircut, if

you are planning to colour, or highlight, your hair, than warm colours, like red, violet and blonde, are in. To maintain your hair and colour, one has to use colour stay shampoos and conditioners. Those, who sport shades of blonde on their crown, can try a special colour hair body shampoo. It is best to shampoo one’s hair every second day during the hot months. Or go for a hair spa every 10 days, which will add shine to your hair and make you feel good. (As told to Barnalee Handique)
