Get Punctured now PICS ANIRUDDHA RAJANDEKAR

Unless you have grease stains all over the walls, these pouffes, chairs and tables would make interesting decor additions to your living room for a good price and an even better cause By Zainab Kantawala @kantawalazainab

A

bunch of 20 students from Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies (SCMS) have come up with a unique concept to save the environment while working towards sustainable development. Their venture, Project Punctured, helps create affordable and eco-friendly furniture, while helping the women of Perne Phata village to earn a living and learn some skills. The students are part of Enactus, an initiative by SCMS, which works towards devising business models for the underprivileged. “Every student wants to do something to create a social impact and change the world for the better. Enactus provided us with an excellent platform to apply theoretical knowledge and create out-of-the-box solutions for everyday problems,” says Yuvraj Jain, founder, Project Punctured. SCMS students market products created by the women. Along with classmates Deeksha Chaturvedi

and Ekas Punyani, Yuvraj set out to recruit students who were enthusiastic about creating a social, environmental and economical change. “Project Punctured helps create affordable, eco-friendly furniture by reusing worn out tyres that are discarded as waste. These products are created by the marginalised women society of Perne Phata village. We aim to provide entrepreneurial training so as to ensure sustainability and additional income to make the women self reliant,” he adds. The basic raw materials used for their products include tyres, paint, foam and wood. The tyres are bought from local puncture repair shops. After replacing defected tyres, these shop owners discard the punctured tyres, which are then burned in landfi lls. “We buy the waste tyres and transform them into trendy furniture. In the near future, we also plan to collaborate with tyre manufacturing companies, to find use for all the tyres that fail to meet their quality standards and are a waste for them. The remaining raw material is purchased from local

small shops at low costs,” explains Yuvraj. At present their product line consists of a chair, a table and a leg rest or sitting stool. There’s also an option to create customized products. “We offer products that can be easily used to brighten up boring spaces at homes, offices, cafes, educational institutions, parks, etc. The customers get the benefit of an innovative product, while helping a marginalised community become financially

independent,” says Ekas Punyani, vice president of the group. The women, who form the backbone of the project, were once considered a burden on their families but are now earning and contributing to their family’s income, thus increasing their selfw o r t h . “ Slow ly, we want to hand over the entire project to these women.

WHAT’S ON OFFER?

From sourcing the tyres, designing, drilling, bolting and transportation, we want them to handle it all. We are presently guiding them with everything, but in the next six months they will be ready to carry out all the operations by themselves,” adds Ekas. In future, the students want to diversify their range to include products like footwear, accessories, dustbins, and so on. zainab.kantawala @goldensparrow.com

Punc-Chair: The chair’s seat is made of foam and rexin, which makes it comfortable as well as durable. The backrest, also made of foam and rexin, is attached to a wooden stick, which is also bolted to the tyres along with the seat. Cost: Rs 1,900 Punc-Table: A circular glass is placed on ttwo tyres bolted together. The middle portion of the table could be customised. Cost: Rs 1,500 Punc-Pouffe: The pouffe is made up of one tyre stacked on top of the other and bolted strongly. It has a seating/legrest of foam and rexin which makes it comfortable. Cost: Rs 1,200 To order, log on to: http://punctured.in/; email support@punctured. in; or call +91 9999900166

Star anise, the humble substitute for anise and fennel, is used in varied cuisines across different continents. Here’s how you can include it in your meals TGS NEWS SERVICE @TGSWeekly

T

his pretty-looking spice is a barely ever seen in the Indian cuisine, unless you’re out of saunf and are looking to add a sweet tingle to your dish. The chemical anethole helps give the star anise the sweet taste, just like its replacements.

Preet Singh, partner at Bund Garden’s Nawab Asia, helps you include it more often in your meals. Star anise enhances a dish by adding to the flavour of meat. It is a major part of the garam masala mix. In China, it forms an important component of the five-spice mixture. Preet says, “Vietnamese noodle soup Pho gets its flavour, aroma and taste

through star anise. The French use it to make to make mulled wine. Star anise helps fight cough, bronchitis and flu. It is also effective in treating stomach problems like indigestion, loss of appetite and respiratory tract congestion. The oil and seed are both beneficial as they are used to make cosmetics and tooth paste. The shikimic acid found in this ingredient is also used to make the antiviral drug Tamiflu," he adds. We have seen this ingredient being used only as a spice but star anise works great in desserts too. It brings out all the necessary flavours and aromas of other ingredients to make a lip-smacking dish. The next time you are experimenting in the kitchen, get over your inhibitions and try the star anise too. In this new section, TGS brings to you flavours from across the world. An expert will share dos and don'ts related to a special ingredient.

Share a ride, save the world Lakshna Jha, started sRide, a carpooling app, to improve basic mobility for all as well as make a positive impact on ecological, social and economic welfare. She says, “sRide is the Facebook equivalent of transportation. By using technology to make carpooling easier, sRide is creating a new transportation option, which saves people money, reduces the number of cars on the road and cuts down pollution drastically. sRide helps users carpool instantly and network on-the-go with verified professionals.” The mobile app provides a network of ridesharing opportunities to accommodate daily commutes, individual or one-time trips, and special events. Lakshna adds, “We enhance people’s desire to choose ‘asset-light’ forms of living that utilise fewer resources and lower their ecological footprint. By pairing individuals looking for rides with drivers offering empty seats you increase the efficiency of the transportation system with minimal investment.” The service aims at providing an easy way to find safe and friendly riding partners and share rides. Most importantly, sRide brings about a lifestyle change, moving away from self-owned automobile dependency to shared services and active transportation. The highlight of this service is that it offers multiple ride options after automatically matching rides posted by users, based on a smart algorithm. Get in touch: http://sride.co/

Perfectly knotted up Arwa Haji can crochet almost anything, from keychains, pouches and frames, to flowers and soft toys. The 23-year-old customises real life and cartoon characters in beautiful colours. “I taught myself how to crochet a year ago. I never really used books but Youtube tutorials were of great help. My mother introduced me to crochet. I was very enthusiastic about it since the day I learned it,” she says. What sets Arwa Knots apart is the attention to details and the personal touch that Arwa adds. “I started it as a hobby. My first piece of crochet was a short skirt for my niece, which I also designed. After that, I started getting orders for my work. Every piece is made with total love and dedication, she adds. Arwa’s creations are priced depending on various features like technique, size and detailing. “I believe each product has a story to tell. None of the pieces I create can be replicated, that is the beauty of handmade things,” says Arwa. Get in touch: arwahaji91@gmail. com

Volvo launches S60 T6 300hp for Rs 42 lac. Yes, please!

V

olvo launched their performance-oriented mid-size sedan, the S60 T6 on Friday. It will be available for Rs 42 lac ex-Delhi and goes up against the Mercedes C-Class, Audi A4, Jaguar XF and BMW 3 Series. Volvo hasn’t seen as much popularity in India as its European rivals, and we wish it wasn’t so. The value for the price they’re offered at is significant. The T6, being a petrol sports sedan, didn’t do very well when it was first offered in 2011 and was discontinued just a year later. Which was a crying shame, because it was a hoot to belt

Maruti unveils S-Cross Premium crossover coming next month, diesel engines only

M

aruti unveiled their anticipated crossover/SUV, the S-Cross this past week at an event in Mumbai. The S-Cross was displayed in concept form at the 2014 Auto Expo and is expected to be available starting August 2015. Maruti have always had a class-leading Diesel engine in their Fiat-sourced 1.3 DDiS motor. This carries over from the Ertiga and Ciaz to the S-Cross and is joined by a new 1.6 litre DDiS producing 120PS and 320Nm of torque mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Maruti claims over 22kmpl from the larger engine and early reports indicate that the added torque makes for an entertaining drive. While the international S-Cross has an AWD option, india only gets front wheel drive. The S-Cross is a premium offering for Maruti and will be sold through a separate group of ‘Nexa’ branded showrooms. The rangetopper comes with a laundry list of features including automatic HID headlamps, rain sensing wipers, navigation, parking camera and so on. We’ll have pricing for the S-Cross next month, but all indications are that it will top the Ciaz in price.

around the track. With the new T6, we have a 2 litre, four pot turbo motor belting out 306PS and 400Nm, all going to the front wheels. That should make for some amusing torque steer. Volvo offers an AWD version internationally, but not in India. Zero to 100 comes up in a claimed 5.9 seconds to a top speed of 230kmph, all while delivering a fuel efficiency of 15.6kmpl. With the S60 T6 on offer, one has a relatively cheap way to park a 300 horsepower car in one’s garage. Coupled with Volvo’s legendary safety features, this should be a cracker of a car.

Turning junk into art Artist Prabhakar Singh chisels bulky pieces of metal into beautiful sculptures By Zainab Kantawala @kantawalazainab

P

Aniruddha Rajandekar

rabhakar Singh creates sculptures like you have never seen before. He welds together discarded metals to make animal figures. Enter his house in Gujarwadi, Katraj, and a huge peacock sculpture, made out of welded nails and vicers, welcomes you. A pile of distorted metal, nails, iron is what this artist uses to create beauty. In his 15-year-old career Prabhakar has largely used scrap metal to give shape to his creations. The artist moulds scrap metal with clay and then heats the metal to give it shape. “ C o m ing from a farmer’s family in Bhagalpur, Bihar, it was diffi-

cult to fund sculpting. So I began experimenting with scrap metals, giving a new identity to my art,” explains Prabhakar. He was inclined towards art since his childhood. In school Prabhakar would doodle in his notebooks, which also got him into trouble at times. “Becoming an artist was a natural career choice for me. In fact, as a child, I would be made to stand out of the class for drawing in my notebook. I always felt the need to express myself through art,” the artist recalls. Prabhakar has made more than 500 sculptures and installations. He works on his art at his studio at Awanti Kalagram in Mulshi, apart from teaching at Bharti Vidyapeeth College of Fine Arts. He derives his artistic inspiration from an apple. He carves his emotion through an apple. One such life size apple sculpture is seen at the entrance to a shopping mall in the city. Rather than pa inting

the surface, Prabhakar has allowed the metal to oxidise naturally. “I enjoy making monumental sculptures. I have made a 10-foot apple sculpture. I have not painted it, since I wanted to maintain its raw look. Once the iron begins to rust, the orange-reddish colour will give it a natural look,” he adds. Motifs like the criss-cross network and transparency make Prabhakar’s work fascinating and every one of his artworks serves a message. In one of his pieces, the 38-year-old has made a life-size iron apple with a woman in the centre. “An apple has a beautiful yet simple shape. I began reading about it and found that in some cultures the apple is considered a symbol of love,” he says. Prabhakar has made numerous sculptures on the subject, but no two pieces are the same. He specialises in making hollow and transparent sculptures. One can easily see through the surface. The artist believes the sculptures have two sides, internal and external, just like humans. External beauty can be seen by all, but you need senses to feel what’s inside. “There are two aspects of anything - the outer form that you can visualise and inner personality, which you cannot see. My sculptures are an attempt to bring out what’s hidden inside,” he explains. In his animal series, Prabhakar has made lifesized sculptures of deer, dolphin, python and crocodile u s i n g

wood, bronze and iron. He has handled the threads of steel in a very creative way so that his skill and imagination reflects in the art. It sure is not easy to give life to pieces of scrap. “It is challenging to recycle scrap. It takes between one and two months to complete one artwork, depending on the size and detailing. It is the final product that gives me satisfaction,” he adds. The artist’s installations have also found a home at the Balewadi Sports Complex, where he has made an Indian bhavra (spinning top), and a snake and ladder themed installation. His recent artwork includes a lady in a yoga posture and a pregnant woman. Prabhakar dreams of a day when he might create a sculpture garden like the ones in New York. zainab.kantawala@goldensparrow.com

Watch out for this young artist Take time out from your busy schedule to see boy genius Aryan Shere’s works in the city By Zainab Kantawala @kantawalazainab

G

oing to school, studying, and playing with friends seems like a regular day in life of a pre-teen but there is something that sets Aryan Shere apart from the rest - his passion for painting. In a short period, he has managed to accomplish what some artists work towards through their entire life. Aryan has won numerous international competitions and is the youngest artist to sell his artwork at a charity event held in Muscat, Oman. “I was always inclined towards painting. I would see my mom conducting art workshops to teach other kids and slowly my interest in art grew stronger,” says Aryan. A student of British School Muscat, the young boy dreams of becoming a famous artist some day. The turning point for Aryan was when he won the Qatar Power Company’s art competition in 2011. His father told him that his company was holding an art competition, Aryan participated and won. “Thanks to my dad, I was encouraged to take part in the competition. I was thrilled to win the trophy. We bought a computer with that prize money and I use it even today,” he remembers After the first taste of success, there was no looking back. Aryan sold his painting at the Art 100×100 fundraising event, where he sold 100 paintings for 100 Omani Riyals, or Rs 16,000, each, for the Oman Cancer

Association. Aryan doesn’t have to look very for inspiration, he says, “My mom is my inspiration. I see her experimenting with her paintings and I get new ideas for my work. I look for new concepts on the internet and try them out. My mom guides me about the artistic angle of the painting that would gel with bright colour combination as well as new ideas,” says Aryan. He describes his paintings as colourful combinations of zentangle art canvassing into a form of modern art. “Painting a chessboard on canvas and placing toy animals that I had collected from McDonald’s is an art piece that is my all-time favourite. Everyone likes it and all their good words encourage me to try new things. Besides that, charcoal painting is something that I enjoy and I like creating different characters in black and white shades. But, for my upcoming exhibition, I have tried a new style of zentangle art. I have sketched different animals in bright colours on a black canvas,” he adds. When planning for the Portrait By A Nation competition held in Muscat, Aryan considered several different techniques including experimenting with coffee beans. Eventually, his expertise in charcoal painting made sure his work stood out and he won the competition. “I am good at using pencils and charcoal, so I thought why not use them to complete my portrait? I won the first prize, and bought gold bangles for my mother’s birthday from the prize money,” he says, proudly. Aryan likes using vibrant colours and mixing them to try different styles of abstract paintings. “For the first time, I have tried different subjects for my exhibition displaying Paris scenery, New York night life, 3D art animals, Zentangle painting experiments and my favourite charcoal painting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he says. The young artist spends his time painting, researching, and dipping into text books to keep up with his studies. When he’s not painting, Aryan enjoys playing the keyboard apart from enjoying a round of tennis with his friends. “At school, he is performing at the expected level at his age. It has been a task to keep Aryan away from his painting experiments but I am happy that he copes well with studies and homework. All these activities keep him completely busy through the week,” says Aparna Shere, Aryan’s mother. Catch Aryan’s debut exhibition in the city at Jawaharlal Nehru Sanskrutik Bhavan, Ghole Road, on July 11 and 12. zainab.kantawala@goldensparrow.com

The “Tevar” actor, who enjoys a great fan following, said he loves connecting with his admirers. “I know how to deal with it. Some people can’t deal with it and that might be the reason why they don’t enjoy it. It is unfair for me comment on anyone else, but I love this attention and like connecting with fans,” he said Arjun, however, agrees that he now thinks twice before making a public appearance. “The world has not changed for me. It’s just that now I have to think a bit more before going out,” he said. PTI
