Hollywood Buzz JLo breaks promise she made to Casper Smart

Pop star Jennifer Lopez is said to have reneged on her promise to make her former beau Casper Smart a star. The singer had promised to help Smart launch an acting career but that never happened, and this is said to be a reason behind their split, reports showbozspy.com. “Over the past two years, Jennifer promised she’d help Casper start his acting career — and even promised to create roles for him in her new movie project, Lila & Eve and in The Boy Next Door, which she not only stars in but produces,” said a source. “All she did was make excuses when it never happened. Casper exploded, calling her a deceitful liar, and said that he now realises she never had any intention of helping him. Then he stormed out of JLo’s mega mansion,” the source added. IANS

ver since Rani Mukerji married Aditya Chopra, there have been rumours that she would lead the Yash Raj production house. Rani, however said she would rather take over the house than the office. “There is a lot of power in the house and especially in the kitchen. In the production house, there are many capable people who take care of everything. Adi being at the helm, I don’t think he requires anybody else. I would rather take over the house and not the office,” Rani told reporters during the trailer launch of Mardaani. The actress said that even after marriage she should be addressed as ‘Rani Mukerji’. “My name has not changed, so you all can call me Rani. I would like to be addressed as Rani only. I love my name so I will stick to that. For my films, people know me as Rani and they will always know me as Rani Mukerji. When I admit my children in school, I guess I will change my surname.” While Aditya Chopra is known to be media shy and doesn’t like to face the camera, Rani said he was an indi-

vidual and likes to maintain his privacy. “We are always together. We do go out together, but as a person he has made a very conscious decision to concentrate on his work rather than being seen. That’s his decision and I don’t think that after marriage, it will change. Marriage makes you a different person. Although he is married to an actor, I don’t think he is entitled to become media savvy. He is an individual and would like to maintain his privacy. As long as he is visible to me, I am very happy,” the 36-year-old actress said. On her latest film, Mardaani, Rani said: “There has been a strong message for women in most of my films. When I did research and met many women inspectors, I took inspiration from them. This is a way to say what are the contributions of women police officers in our country. There are female officers not only good as male officers, sometimes even better. We have to change the perspective of how people look at a women police officer. This film is one step towards that change,” she said. IANS

Pune is no longer a small city and is considered at par with Mumbai.Having said that,we need to upgrade our resources when it comes to the art and entertainment in the city. This will help young talent flourish and they will no longer have to travel to Mumbai and struggle. We need classier and authorised institutes that teach the nuances of film-making, acting and so on to the youth here. We have a rich culture, heritage and some great acting talent in the city.

Another reason is that people’ joke. The KRK character the villain in that film is a murdering embodied the spirit of Bollywood psycho, for no reason other than the fact

that he is a murdering psycho. Suri and his team of Tushar Hiranandani and Milap Zaveri have tried to add ‘nuance’ to the villain’s character by adding an hour of backstory. They also add in two hours of love story – because you should feel for the revenge-seeker’s loss and justify his actions. And what a love story. The heroine is such a divine character, she would make angels cut off their wings. She worships Lord Ganesha, plays with kids, helps random terminally-ill old people get married. The villain is actually pretty well rendered by Ritesh Deshmukh. Like in almost every previous film of his, he’s a refreshingly big talent in a pool of mediocrity. In Ek Villain, he proves that he can be a really great dramatic actor. Perhaps this will help him get some genuinely great and/or original movies. (By special arrangement with firstpost.com)

Osteoporosis, a clinical condition that weakens bones, is most commonly seen in women than in men. A little change in your diet will do wonders in combating the ailment. Ishani Bose brings you the causes that lead to this disease and preventive measures one should take to keep it at bay

Osteoporosis and its food cure Things you should include in your diet

TGS News Service

P

ooja Kulkarni, 51, had been complaining of acute knee problem for several months. After numerous visits to the doctor and carrying out repeated tests and X-rays, it was finally confirmed — she was suffering from an acute condition of osteoporosis — a condition identified by decrease in the density of bones, thereby reducing their strength and resulting in them becoming fragile. How is it caused According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, one in every three women suffers from the disease, worldwide, as against one in every five men. Clinical nutritionist Anushree Shetty attributes two major reasons for this phenomenon — the first being less muscle mass among women in comparison to men and the other being menopause, which results in lack of estrogen. “Muscle keeps the bones protected so less muscle mass invariably results in weaker bones. Also, lack of estrogen in women, post menopause, causes the bone density and muscle mass to decline. Apart from this, high thyroid levels in the body (hyperthyroidism) can lead to bone loss,” Shetty says. Add proteins in your diet While there is no permanent cure for osteoporosis, proper nutrition plays a very important role to prevent, slow or stop its progress. “It mainly happens due to lack of calcium and Vitamin D in the body. Hence, the most obvious food choices would be milk and milk products. A glass of milk will give one between 127 and 150mg of calcium. Ideally, an adult needs around 600mg of calcium in a day. So, two-three glasses of milk

in a day would be just perfect,” says nutritionist Ritika Samaddar. Vegetarians do have options! Though protein intake is must, many argue that while non- vegetarians have a plethora of dishes to choose from, vegetarians just have a handful of options, making their diet a tad bit monotonous and boring. Celebrity chef Shailendra Kekade begs to differ. “There

Vitamin D Calcium relies on vitamin D to help it travel to the parts of the body that need it. The best sources are fatty fish, including salmon, herring, mackerel, and sardines; milk, soy milk and yogurt; UVtreated mushrooms.

Method • Combine all the ingredients except the chocolate chips. • Heat a skillet greased with a little oil on medium heat. Once heated, pour a ladle or 1/4 cup of pancake batter on to the skillet. Sprinkle each pancake with chocolate chips. • Allow the pancake to cook on medium heat. You will notice the top side begins to get bubbles and air pockets and will slowly get steamed and cooked.

Vitamin C It enables the body to produce collagen, a protein that contributes to bone strength and integrity. Strawberries, oranges, lemons, grapefruit, guava ans mangoes are rich in vitamin C.

Things you should avoid consuming

1-1/2 cups whole wheat flour

Potassium Eating a diet rich in potassium helps to slow down the decrease in bone mineral density that occurs with ageing. Coconut water is also a rich source of potassium.

Magnesium This mineral plays a supporting role when it comes to treating and preventing osteoporosis. Get magnesium from pumpkin seeds or quinoa, as well as millet, brown rice, spinach, cashews, sesame seeds, flaxseed, and wheat germ.

is a wide variety of dishes that vegetarians can opt for. Apart from the typical green leafy vegetables, tofu, soybean and soy products, one can opt for oatmeal, chick peas, kidney beans and other pulses, asparagus, broccoli and mushrooms. While most people consider walnuts to be the highest source of protein, what they don’t know is that peanuts contain even more proteins than the former. Also, vegetables like green peas, potatoes and sweet potatoes should be a part of one’s protein rich diet.” He adds that the water produced by hanging curd to make ‘shrikhand’ is also an excellent source of proteins one can opt for. Items that accelerate bone loss are high sugar foods and most physicians and nutritionists consider these to be a ‘strict no no’ for osteoporosis patients.

Ingredients:

Vitamin K This vitamin is essential for the formation of osteocalcin, a type of protein found only in bone. Consuming vitamin K rich foods may help slow bone loss and reduce your risk of damaging a bone later in life.

However, totally excluding sugar from a patient’s diet is not a wise or practical option, believe most chefs. “Too much of everything is bad; however, if sugar is consumed in the right proportion, it need not be harmful. Fresh fruit tarts made with less sugar, could thus satisfy the patients’ sugar cravings,” says Anurudh Khanna, executive chef, The Westin Hotel. ishani.bose@goldensparrow.com

Sirish Chandran is bowled over by two of the fastest Audis in the country... on a cricket pitch!

I

can’t claim to be an expert on the subject, considering I’ve only seen one cricket match live, but to my eye the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium is breathtaking. Situated near the Pune exit of the expressway, it’s a stadium I’ve passed by a gazillion times and I always slow down to take a good look, especially when it is all lit up for night matches. This is

Below: 19” rims offer brutal ride while looking spectacular; Right: Cabin is beginning to look and feel dated; Traditional analog clocks

the first time I’m inside, the first time I’ve been allowed on to a cricket pitch, and — despite the empty stands and the deafening silence — you can feel the energy. I get goosebumps imagining taking guard in front of 34,000 spectators and 1.2 billion glued to their TVs. Every one of whom are experts on cricket. But I’m not one, so I repair to the terrace where we have the RS 5 and RS 7. What, no R8, you ask? Well, the RS 7 makes more power than an R8 V10 Plus with

space for two cheerleaders and their pom-poms, so… Let’s start with the RS 5, for it has an engine that you will soon only see in museums – a naturally aspirated V8. The venerable 4.2-litre V8 has always been epic: epic power, epic soundtrack, epic revs. It’s so good that the engine was dry-sumped and stuck into the back of the R8 to make for a bloody brilliant supercar. Six years after I made my first acquaintance, this remains a brutally epic motor.

For the RS 5, Audi have tweaked it to move power up to 442bhp, torque to 430Nm and the rev limit up to 8500rpm. There’s also a 7-speed twin-clutch gearbox with launch control that fires the RS 5 to 100kmph in 4.5 seconds. And it’s accompanied by a growl that gets harder and harder as the revs sweep north towards 8500rpm. And of course there’s the optional (`2.5 lakh) sports exhaust. Using the paddles for the S tronic gearbox, you can keep it in a higher gear and revel in a rich bassy low-rev soundtrack while the tremendous flexibility of the engine allows it to pull hard from anywhere. The RS 5 gets all-wheeldrive and that means traction in all conditions, over all sorts of surfaces. In rear-wheel-drive cars, a lot of the initial poke is lost in wheelspin; the RS 5 launches at the perfect revs, squats on its haunches,

The RS 5 engine makes 444bhp, 430Nm of torque and revs to 8500rpm only a slight chirp from the tyres, and bang-bang-bang up the gears. But you can’t do this day in and day out; after maybe four launch control runs, the clutch needs to cool down before you go back out. The brakes are mighty – eight-pistons up front, floating discs with a wave-pattern to save weight, and nothing in the way of fade. Quattro is allied to an electronically-controlled rear differential (a `2.3 lakh option) that acts as a limited-slip diff and enables torque vectoring that brakes an inside wheel, sending more torque to the outside with more traction. Which means that hard as you might try, the RS 5 refuses

to smoke its tyres or get the rear unstuck; it’s just clinical precision clawing at the tarmac, the sport differential rotating the rear by just that right bit to turn it harder through corners, nothing wasted. However, even when the road is smooth, the RS 5 rides like the devil. Even in Comfort mode. Shod with 19-inch wheels (a `5 lakh option) with just 35-profi le rubber, it is hard-as-nails and in

Dynamic mode, it is absolutely brutal. Apart from the BIC, I don’t think there’s a single road in the country where you can keep the RS 5 in Dynamic mode — your spine will be rearranged and your teeth will fall off. UP BY about 50 lakh rupees, there’s the RS 7. For that additional dough you get four doors, four very comfortable seats, a beautiful shape, and 552bhp. 552! Everything else pales in comparison to that figure. The R8 V10 Plus is at 542bhp. This really is a stupid amount of power for a family car with space for (lots of) luggage. It does 0-100kmph in under four seconds and keeps on accelerating – to 200, 250 and on and on to 280kmph thanks to the optional (`3.5 lakh) Dynamic

Specification: RS 7

pack that bumps up top speed from the regular 250kmph. You can even remove the 280kmph limiter, allowing the RS 7 to peak at 305kmph. The RS 7’s 4.0-litre V8 gets twin turbos (mounted between the cylinder heads), an air to water intercooler, and direct fuel injection. Just like revs define the driving experience of the RS 5,

in Dynamic while suspension and steering were in Comfort. (Dynamic for the steering just adds weight, the feel and feedback remain as remote as ever.) And thus programmed, the RS 7 actually rides well. Way, way better than any car running on 21-inch rims (a `5 lakh option) with 35-profi le tyres has any right to. In the RS 5, you

Clockwise from left: RS badge promises and delivers much; Cabin gets a dimpled flat-bottomed steering wheel; 4.0-litre twin turbo V8

it’s the torque that defines the RS 7 – an industrial-grade 700Nm that peaks at just 1750rpm and stays flat till 5500rpm, a seemingly endless surge. When you aren’t in the mood for it, thanks to cylinder deactivation, half the cylinders of the V8 shut down and it moderates its drinking habit. To 6.5kmpl, if the on-board computer is to be believed. I can’t believe I’m actually talking about fuel efficiency here! Of course that’s no way to drive, but neither is full Dynamic mode an agreeable option – those rims are optional 21-inchers. As with most Audis today, you can set different parameters in different modes and my Individual mode had engine and transmission

have to grit your teeth. In the RS 7 nobody complained and that’s remarkable. Actually, everything about this car is remarkable. The cabin — again like all Audis these days — has impeccable build. Suedelike seat fabric is lavished on the supportive RS seats, there’s a fat, dimpled, flat-bottomed steering wheel and lashings of carbonfibre trim. There are some hard plastics, but not something I can’t live with. The back seat is comfortable, if a little tight on headroom and it all feels wonderfully snug and sporty. The ground clearance is also good for our Indian roads; not once did we scrape her underbelly and that’s despite this car being kitted with Dynamic Ride Control. Which

Engine V8, 3993cc, turbo-petrol Transmission 8-speed tiptronic Power 552bhp @ 5700-6600rpm Torque 700Nm @ 1750-5500rpm Weight 1920kg 0-100kmph 3.9sec (claimed) Top speed 250kmph (limited) optional 280/305kmph Price (ex-showroom, Mumbai) ` 1.29 crore/1.75 crore (as tested) is a `2.3 lakh option, by the way, plus `2.5 lakh for the sport rear differential. IF THE RS 5 FEELS LIKE A technically accomplished ODI player, an opening batsman who can carry his bat through the match, the RS 7 is that enormous West Indian hulk Chris Gayle. It takes the road and destroys it, just like Gayle’s 30-ball century destroyed the Pune team last season. It doesn’t matter if the road is straight or wriggly, Quattro, the sport rear differential, torque vectoring et al makes it utterly unflappable. In Dynamic mode, the RS 7 vividly transmits every little surface change into the cabin, which is all great when you are cornercarving but crippling for your neck and back. The steering is precise and connected, but just like the RS 5 not delivering much in the way of feel and feedback. What really does it for the RS 7 is its everyday usability. The cabin is excellent as is ride quality. Leave it in sport mode and the exhaust pops and bangs, which is overlaid with a roar when you gas it from the lights and a crackle when you let off the throttle. There’s space for four with luggage. It is a proper all-rounder with a bit of swag. Like Shastri, it can bat anywhere, from number 10 to the number 1. And just like that Audi 100 that eventually became the A6 that spawned the fourdoor coupe A7 and thus the RS 7, there is enough real estate in the car, and on the car, for an entire cricket team to take a victory lap. Shame the curator threw us out when we suggested that as the closing picture. sirish@evo.in

Auto Selector with ThrillOfDriving.com I’m having trouble deciding on my first car. As I am a serious petrol head (no diesels) and want a good hot hatch, I have whittled my choices down to the VW Polo GT TSI, Maruti Suzuki Swift and Toyota Etios Liva TRD Sportivo 1.5. What car should I put my money down on?

We’d straight off recommend the Polo GT TSI with the excellent 1.2-litre turbo-charged petrol mated to a 7-speed DSG automatic. It has the best engine-transmission combo, looks great, scores very highly on crash safety and is the best driver’s car out there. Bit on the expensive side though.

I’m looking to upgrade from my old Skoda Octavia vRS as the maintenance costs are really getting to me. Could you please suggest a replacement as I want a car that will deliver as much fun (I have modded the car slightly), is as big and as comfortable and doesn’t cost over Rs 25 lakh.

There is the latest Octavia with the 1.8TSI turbo-petrol engine which is more grown up than your old Octavia with better comfort, space, practicality and is as quick, but it doesn’t have that raw sporty edge of the original vRS. Alternatively you could opt for a well-maintained petrol-engined Audi A4, BMW 3 Series or Mercedes-Benz C-Class in the second hand market which will be within your budget and good fun to drive with a premium badge to boast of. Check the car’s history thoroughly to avoid escalated maintenance costs.
