The actor decided to take up Bobby Jasoos and gave up on an American TV series

ctress-businesswoman Preity Zinta, whose current legal conflict with ex-beau Ness Wadia continues to make headlines, is set to make a comeback with Neeraj Pathak’s Bhaiyyaji, in which she plays a bandit. The film will also feature Sunny Deol as a gangster from Uttar Pradesh. According to Pathak, Preity has pulled it off with aplomb. “Preity plays a Uttar Pradeshwali. She plays a gangster’s daughter. ctor Ali Fazal doesn’t regret choosing Bollywood projects over American TV series Homeland. He had to let go Homeland because of the date issues as he had already committed his dates for Khamoshiyan, which is being produced by Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt, and his forthcoming film Bobby Jasoos in which he will be seen with Vidya Balan. “I was approached for Homeland, and it was a great opportunity. But when they asked me for my dates, those were given to Mukesh sir’s film and my promotions for Bobby

The makers of Homeland wanted Ali to fly down to the US in the first week of July for the workshop and the shoot was set to start soon after. In the last three years, Homeland has become one of the most popular TV series across the globe. It has so far won five Golden Globe Awards and 10 Emmys. But Ali has something to feel happy about. Vidya does it again Film: Bobby Jasoos Cast: Vidya Balan, Ali Fazal

he’s 30 years old, single, carries a backpack, wears sensible shoes and no make-up. She has an office, two assistants and

a reputation for being just a little strange. Because really, which sensible young woman from Hyderabad goes prancing around the city, saying she’s a private detective? Bilquis, who wants to be known as Bobby Jasoos, is not sensible.

in the neighbourhood is sick of her showing up and asking for a job. To most of her world, Bobby Jasoos is a bit of a joke, but none of this fazes our Bobby. She’s convinced that she is a sleuth and so sleuthing she will go, at all cost. There’s an effervescent sweetness to Bobby Jasoos, written by TGS Rating Sanyukta Chawla and ooo directed by Samar Sheikh. It’s Sheikh’s first film, but his direction is assured and he has marshalled his technical team smartly. Hyderabad looks beautiful without seeming fake. The pace of the film is spritely and not for a moment during its two hours does Bobby Jasoos drag. Chawla’s done a wonderful job of putting together a simple story And thank god for this, because that ties its loose ends and is filled Bobby is one of the most delightful with memorable characters. It’s a heroines to have graced the Indian relief to see a heroine who is 30 years silver screen. She’s quick-witted, old and not trapped in the nubile feisty, determined and more than a 20s. Similarly, what a pleasure to little ‘cracked’. Her family despairs see a film about Muslim people, because who will marry someone set in a Muslim neighbourhood, like her? rom the moment the decision was made to turn John Green’s bestselling novel, The Fault in Our Stars, into a film, it was a guaranteed hit. Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) is 16, “the Keith Richards of cancer” and has to carry an oxygen tank around with her because her lungs barely work. At a cancer support group, she meets the smart-mouthed and charming survivor, Augustus “Gus” Waters (Ansel Elgort). Even though the stars are not on their side, the two fall in love. They go for walks, they visit Amsterdam, they talk about books, they text each other and it’s all supposed to make you feel warm and fuzzy until you realise it was an elaborate setup to make you weep copiously. Which you do, because really, what else can you do while watching a love story starring two kids with cancer?

Well, thanks to Josh Boone’s utterly insipid adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars, you could just be bored to tears while watching this film. For fans of Green’s novel, there’s the satisfaction of seeing beloved characters come to life. Such is the hysterical love for Green’s novel that its devoted readership in the West didn’t care how mediocre the film is. They flocked to the theatres, they cried, they wailed and, from the look of things, a few of them went so far as to steal a bench. There are a number of things wrong with The Fault in Our Stars To begin with, it has True Blood’s Sam Trammell cast as Hazel’s father, which means that whenever he’s on screen, you expect him to turn into a dog. This is largely because Trammell’s acting talents are limited to a single, perplexed expression. The best part of The Fault in Our Stars is Laura Dern, the enormously gifted actress who has been largely forgotten of late. As Hazel’s mother, she’s a fascinating character who seems

more interesting than her daughter, the star of the film. Dern plays a mother who isn’t over-protective and instead finds the strength to trust her terminally-ill daughter and support her even when the teenager makes decisions that may be questionable. Her performance is strong enough to make you wish Green had written more about Hazel’s mother. As any teenager will tell TGS Rating you, it’s easy to be wannabe, but it takes something ooo special to be truly quirky. As a film, The Fault in Our Stars lacks the directorial vision that would have translated the sweet, geeky charm of the book. The lines that read smoothly sound clumsy when spoken. The fault doesn’t lie in the words. The most un-normal of dialogues and conversations can become magical but it takes a talented director and a superb cast to make the weird wonderful. Unfortunately, The Fault in Our Stars isn’t so lucky. (By special arrangement with Firstpost.com)

religious identity and steers clear of flat caricatures. And praise the gods of popcorn, because here’s a Bollywood film that doesn’t lose its steam at intermission. Balan as Jasoos carries the film ably and lives up to the reputation that she’s earned for herself of being a real actress, rather than a star. Bobby Jasoos relies heavily on Balan winning over audiences without the help of a hero or a romantic lead. It’s not easy because Bobby doesn’t transform into a paragon of virtue. The film is all about Bobby and her being a jasoos, and Balan is superb. She gets to have fun with a number of disguises, including one that seems to be a dig at Ekta Kapoor, but Balan is really in her element when she’s playing the disguiseless Bobby, with her sensible salwar kameez and minimal make-up. In short, Bobby’s the sort of girl with whom you can’t help but fall in love. So go see Bobby Jasoos. With a little help from her friends and family, she’ll make you happier than you’ve felt in ages. here’s alwys a throng of customers at Pappu Khan’s tea stall at Quarter Gate, Rasta Peth, from 6am to 9pm. What’s Pappu’s secret recipe? It is his ‘bhatti chai’, which is made over a bhatti with coal as fuel. The bhatti itself is a traditional one made from mud, with a coating of Plaster of Paris (chuna). Nineteen-year-old Pappu, who hails from Lucknow, landed in Pune looking for a lucrative job. Unable to find one, he decided to set up a tea stall instead. “The rising rates of gas cylinders was a constant worry for me,” he says. “I had to shell out Rs

1,400 every five days; I was hardly saving any money. I started looking for alternatives and experimented with coal. This is how we make chai up North. The response has been overwhelming, as you can tell by the number of people standing at my stall at any time.” Businessman Virendra Vanjari is one such loyal customer who visits Pappu’s tea stall at least once a day. “It is like what bhakri from the chulha tastes,” says Vanjari. “It has a distinct aroma that adds to the flavour of tea. I am an insurance

agent and even introduce my clients to him. I have stopped visiting other tea stalls.” Like Vanjari, others have also shifted loyalties from amrut-tulays to Pappu’s stall. After rickshaw driver Naresh Khopargade tasted this tea for the first time, he came back three days in a row. “I saw the sign that read ‘bhatti chai’,” says Khopargade. “I was curious and decided to try it out. The taste is addictive. Cooking

on coal is one of the oldest and finest methods.” Like his customers, Pappu too is a fan of this method and sips on a cup while speaking to us. His big plan is to open more branches in the city. “I recently returned from my home-town and have learnt a few more chai tricks. My younger brother is also learning the ropes and I shall be opening a new branch soon.” And Pune will line up for its 5-rupee fix. anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

Vicky Silverthorn, declutterer to the stars and creator of life organisation company YouNeedAVicky, shares a series of practical tips to help you better organise your fridge, reports femalefirst.co.uk:

Keep the items you use most at the front of the fridge: Having a streamlined fridge can make a positive difference to someone on a busy day, given the number of times we go in there - for that morning cup of tea, when making breakfast, lunch and dinner and everything in between. Having the items you use the most come to hand as soon as you open the fridge door can make a world of a difference.

Keep what you want to eat most 2 in front: If you’re trying to eat more healthily, then make sure your

fresh fruit and vegetables are the first thing you see when you open the fridge and hide the chocolate as much as possible.

GAURAV THOMBRE

Specification: 2014 Nissan Sunny

Verdict

+ Space, ride quality, affordability - Ordinary performance, looks may not be to everyone’s taste

Nissan has upgraded its Sunny to give it a new lease of life. Abhik Das gauges its prospects

N

issan’s entry-level family sedan saw the light of day in the Sixties and came to India as a hard-to-resist, valuefor-money proposition when it was launched in 2011. But with rival sedans upping the ante, Sunny sales soon flagged. Now, in a bid to reverse its fortunes, Nissan has revamped the sedan significantly. The new car’s front end incorporates a new bumper and grille reminiscent of the Teana. The angular fascia makes for a far more cohesive design and the lavish splashing of chrome raises the bling. The chrome highlights on the grille and fog lamp housing and the boomerang headlights hark back to the 370Z’s design. The headlights could have been smaller though. The central bulge on the bonnet is more prominent, now adding some character, and the rear gets a new bumper. The new 12-spoke alloy wheels and turn indicatorintegrated ORVMs feature a novel design. And the antenna is now placed towards the rear of the roof. In contrast to the older Sunny’s monochrome interior, the new Sunny is much livelier. The centre console and controls get a piano black finish. The audio system is dominated by a large 5.5-inch display flanked by buttons for media and phone connectivity via Bluetooth, while the passenger side of the dashboard has aux and USB slots. The meter console looks sportier and houses an MID displaying average and real-time fuel consumption readouts apart from the usual odo, trip, temperature and fuel level displays. The steering

gets contemporary audio controls that include a toggle switch to scroll through the menus and push buttons for phone and track/channel seek buttons. The cabin is draped in a light and dark grey combo along with subtle chrome highlights and dark trims for the door handles. The class-leading space at the back is the Sunny’s USP. The Sunny was never intended to be an enthusiast’s car. The 1.5-litre HR15 petrol engine is mated to a 5-speed manual producing 98bhp, or a CVT that manages 100bhp. The CVT transmission petrol is a lazy performer; all that a firm stomp on the throttle does is raise engine decibels but it fails to blur the scenery any. The K9K dCi 1.5-litre

TOD rating

turbocharged diesel we drove next, develops 85bhp, and is peppier with a five-speed manual transmission and negligible turbo-lag. Neither engine is a scorcher but the upshot is frugality. Nissan has tweaked the ECUs on both engines for better efficiency. Their refinement is evident though and along with the slick shifting manual ’box and a fairly light clutch on the diesel, it makes the Sunny easy-to-drive, ensuring painless city commuting. The Sunny’s ride quality is probably a segment-best, and the car traverses bad roads with aplomb. While the long wheelbase aids stability, there is noticeable body roll. The CVT-equipped petrol claims an impressive 17.97kmpl, while the

;;;22 diesel delivers 22.71kmpl. The diesel returned average fuel consumption upwards of 16.5kmpl as displayed on the MID, despite broken surfaces and erratic traffic necessitating constant gear shifts and braking. The air-con was used all the time, given the seaside humidity. The Sunny’s lower-end variants are devoid of features even as trivial as a wiper speed adjuster, and as necessary as rear air-con vents. The top-end variants are fully loaded with all the bells and whistles including side airbags, speed-sensing auto door locks, climate control airconditioning, leather seats et al.

A whole 636mm is available at the rear, and the update has brought about a host of features and attractive styling. The Sunny is the size of a luxury sedan, and given the Indian buyers’ penchant for large-sized cars, its prospects look promising. Prices are yet to be announced but expect the new Sunny to cost about the same as the old one. It may not provide the thrill of driving, but it sure has everything to cater to the 32-yearold plus audience that Nissan is targeting. The new 2014 sporty Sunny is slated for a July launch.

Since you mention family, we strongly recommend the Audi Q5 in that segment. The X3 is sportier to drive, but the ride is stiffer as well. The Range Rover Evoque is a great drivers’ car, but it is stiff and cramped in comparison. However, the Q5 is nice to drive, comfortable and spacious, making it a great all-rounder.

There’s a tyre hugger at the rear, while the tailpiece has been revised to give it a more contemporary appearance. On the road, the bike feels slightly more comfortable than before thanks to a revised suspension. The fuel injection makes for a crisper throttle response, though the drop in power is noticeable. Given our short ride, it was difficult to gauge the performance of the tyres, though they did feel better. I’ve owned a couple of sportsbikes but have found most 1000cc machines to be quite a handful in the city. A friend’s Ducati Monster 796 had me bowled over by its usable performance. However, considering Ducati’s shoddy image in the Indian market, I was advised to look at the Triumph Street Triple and the Kawasaki Z800. Which of the two make a better buy for daily use?

The Kawasaki Z800 has impressed us immensely with its rideability in the city. The Street Triple is a great motorcycle but its sportsbike-derived engine makes it higher revving than the Z800, compromising low- and mid-range performance. The Kawasaki’s riding position is comfortable, and Kawasaki’s motorcycles are known to be fuss-free as far as maintenance is concerned. Write to evo.editorial@goldensparrow. com with your queries. rom an open-air school to markets situated on hilltops, everything about Himachal Pradesh comes as a breath of fresh air. No matter what you have heard about the place, being there will leave you spellbound with its natural beauty you will see around every corner. I was not sure if I would be able to do justice to the splendours of Himachal, as there are countless photographs and even videos made by visitors to Dharamsala, McLeod Ganj and Dalhousie. But all such thoughts vanished the moment I reached Himachal, and my finger was constantly on my camera’s click button from day one.

What’s more, we found a guide at the very hotel we were lodged in, whose owner is an avid trekker, and he took it upon himself to guide us everywhere, all through our 13-day holiday. It’s such an amazing place, where the mountain slopes are where the buildings of the markets and homes are constructed. It is no surprise then that the residents of this place are a hardy, healthy lot. Even 80-year-olds are as nimble as goats walking up and down the steep slopes. A heart-warming aspect of Himachal is how hospitable the locals are. The people are genuinely

TGS LIFE

From the Palkhi diary

JULY 5, 2014 PUNE

LIFE compiled a sample of pictures on display over the weekend at Brush Strokes Art Gallery, JM Road, by The Pune Instagrammers. Sneha Krishnan has the details

CITY EVENTS

Thirsty no more Chinmay Jade, Electronics Engineer The area where the warkaris stay for the night turns into a sort of carnival. The city provides several services for the pilgrims such as free meals, medical check-ups and shelter. This picture was taken at one such location where the warkaris had stopped to quench their thirst at a public water tap. Monsoon Prayer Aniket C Kamthe, Java Developer I walked past a group of warkaris at Nana Peth discussing the delayed monsoons. I stopped and asked one of them why it was not raining yet and he said to me, “The world has too much hatred and the gods are upset with us. So we must pray for forgiveness and we’ll receive showers in return.” And he looked up at the sky. That was my shot.

Those expectant eyes Manali Parmar, Law student I was walking through the crowd, when these children spotted my camera and came up to me and asked me to click their picture. And after I was done, they were excited to see how the picture turned out and said, “Madam yhala paper madhe pathwa!” (“Please send this photo to the newspaper”). Where there is faith... Rohit Nijampurkar, Software Engineer Why did I click this picture? Because her vision is clear and her faith in god is limitless.

Determination doesn’t die with age Vishwesh M Kugaonkar, Engineering student I spoke to this pilgrim at Nana Peth for a few minutes and then took a picture of him without his permission. When I showed it to him, he was excited and told me that nothing would stop him from finishing what he had started — the journey to Pandharpur.

Clash of Cymbals Ketan Bhagat, Software Engineer The sound of the taal is electrifying and plays a very big role in the Palkhi procession. The warkaris sing and chant bhajans and slogans as they make their way through the roads of our city. I took this picture on the Hadapsar-Saswad road.

India’s Tour of England – The Unofficial Preview A cameo innings every week, across the line, by Malay Desai

I

f you have been raising your eyebrows at just how many of your Facebook friends have turned into football fans from the time the Football World Cup began, this day next week will be their time of reckoning. If they, despite the World Cup semi-finals being underway, post statuses such as ‘Why do we keep picking that loser Ishant again?’ or ‘The IndiansCannot-Play-Bounce Series is back LOLz!’, know that their football jerseys will have been safely back in their closets until 2018. The Tour to England is a big deal after all, and the fact that this is the fi rst five-test series anywhere for India since 2002 is more critical to our fan than minor sporting events such as some Brazil-Netherlands semi-final. Moreover, we all know the smell of the English drubbing we received months after winning the World

Cup in 2011, when even Tendulkar, Dravid will be enough for the hosts to meekly and Laxman couldn’t avoid a 0-4 whitewash. surrender to the fierce forces of Varun Th is time, the clouds are perhaps looking Aaron and Mohammad Shami. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar requires meticulous preparation, and the bowled impressively in the Champions Trophy BCCI, the visionary cricket board that it in England last year, but this series is as long as is, rightly scheduled a one-day series in a season of Celebrity Big Brother and perhaps as Bangladesh for our boys last month. We are intimidating. Unfortunately, the only menacing sure Raina, Pujara, Rahane and co. picked fast bowler we had in recent times is busy up invaluable skills on handling swinging gyrating in another reality show back home, conditions in that (farce of a) series. England Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. on the other hand, have just finished losing a Batting-wise, India may look strong with two-test series at home against Sri Lanka, and Jadeja, Dhoni and Rohit in the middle but we our fan hopes that the heart-breaking defeat

all know how IPL heroes can turn out to be like those counterfeit products which look as good as originals but have evident malfunctions. The burden again is on Kohli – whose confidence is foreign conditions-proof; Pujara – who is living up to his reputation as the next Dravid; and most of all Gautam Gambhir, the last bastion of the old order. And howsoever this series progresses, there is one motivational line this writer suggests Dhoni must use to begin his pep talks to the batsmen - “If Ajit Agarkar could get a test century at Lords…” Brace yourself then, for a battering season full of plot twists, fight-backs and hopefully controversies as delicious as Suarez’s bite. And if you’re the me-too football fan variety, make sure you keep switching channels during the fi rst test so that your Facebook friends can’t figure where your loyalties lie.
