Alia: I am a Kareena fan in real life as well but in the film, it’s more about the Manish Malhotra lehenga that she insists on wearing to her wedding and where the search for it takes her.
Alia, your character Kavya is a die-hard Kareena fan. Are you one in real life too?
Have you seen any of Siddharth’s [Malhotra] films this year? Silence! Let the real drama unfold

If the most powerful weapon, the spoken word, were taken out of theatre, how will we respond?
By Sanjay Pendse
T
he Pune theatre stage witnessed a dramatic but silent twist last weekend when the curtain went up on the first edition of Mounanter, a silent theatre contest. Amid a busy calendar, dotted with the iconic Purushottam and Firodia inter-collegiate theatre contests, and a flurry of me-too contests, Mounanter turned out to be a welcome vespite. A term born out of creative licence, Mountaner roughly means “translating silences”. This contrasts with a theatre tradition that has often been criticised for being verbose. In fact, the Purushottam contest gives away a special award every year for the actor with the best vachik abhinay (enunciated expression). So how did the idea of a silent theatre contest come about? “We have always organised multidiscplinary art events and try ideas seldom tried before,” explains Kushal Khot, who organised the contest along with Saurabh Kale. “When we first mooted the idea of a silent theatre contest in Pune on social media, we got more responses from Mumbai, which has a tradition for mime theatre.” Even actress Ashwini Giri, who co-judged Mounanter, along with theatre guru Pradeep Vaiddya, had her doubts about the event. “Are city groups aware about mime theatre? At the prize distribution, Vaiddya said that Mountanter marked a historic occasion. “It is an occasion to re-examine our theatre. If the most powerful weapon, the spoken word, were taken out of theatre, how will we respond? It is not to say that we should all switch to mime theater. How different is the South Indian film industry from Bollywood? The Telugu film industry is completely star-driven and star-crazy. Even the making of a film is to highlight a star. Chennai is more story-oriented, not that it is not star-driven, but more emphasis is given to the story. Hindi movies fall in between both these industries. Bollywood pays attention to star value and the story.

A failed tribute to DDLJ Film: Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania Cast: Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt

t’s been almost 20 years since Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge was released. There is now literally a generation gap between one of Bollywood’s most-loved romances and the present crop of romance-seeking young things. So yes, DDLJ could probably do with an update and Rakesh “Humpty” Sharma, Kavya Pratap Singh along with their friends and family are here to do just that. While in DDLJ, the motto was bade bade deshon mein chhoti chhoti baatein to hoti rehti hain, here in little Delhi apartments, some rather big things are revealed — like Humpty’s pectoral muscles, which are so pumped and plump that you can’t help feeling that he, rather than the slender Kavya, should be the one to cover his torso, to protect both his modesty and ours in the audience. Leaving Dhawan’s alarmingly
over-developed muscles aside — his body is not ahead of the curve; it is the curve. In fact, it’s every curve you can imagine. From back to bicep to nipple, everything in Dhawan’s body that has a muscle attached to it, bulges — the reason we see Humpty’s bare chest and Kavya’s bare shoulders is that the two make love. Khaitan’s script has a lot of enjoyable little moments. It’s a cheesy film, but one that delights in being cheesy. Unfortunately, the focus of Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania isn’t the strengths in the script but following the formula by which Dharma Productions swears. The formula doesn’t allow characters like Angad, Kavya’s sister, Poplu and Shonty any development. So instead of spending
time on the interesting relationships and characters, it is forced into the Dharma mould. Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania, to quote one of the film’s better lines, is a “100 per cent original fake” and you can’t help wondering, for all its laughs, why anyone bothered to make this film when re-runs of DDLJ exist. hat do you do if something’s broken? You fix it right? Well, Oliver Schauf, CEO & Brewmaster and Suketu Talekar, COO, Doolally Brewing Company (DBC) believe that ‘beer’ in this country is broken, what is sold in bottles, cans and taps across the country is, at best, a broad, and a bad, approximation of beer. This very thought got them to start DBC four and a half years ago. Since then Pune has seen its love for this brewed beverage grow exponentially. Today, the city has three more breweries that are gaining popularity among the young and old alike. The Independence Brewing Company (IBC) is the latest in the city. Co-founded by award winning brewer Shailendra Bist, USA, IBC was set up with the aim of providing the citizens of Pune with the best

So there will always be more checks and balances, and consequently more regulatory/licensing challenges, in this business as compared to some others. Having said this, we also need to understand that we are having this discussion in 2014 and not the 1980s. Most state administrations these days are progressive and open to new ideas especially ideas that have the potential to generate new revenue sources for the state. Take the example of our experience with the Maharashtra Excise Department. In 2006, when we reached out to them to create regulatory policy and license for this concept that didn’t exist anywhere in the country. It didn’t take long for them to see that this could not just open up a new revenue stream for the state, but has the potential create an entirely new industry, create new jobs. It is important to remember that this is a craft product and is only as good as the skill of person making it!”

Ingredients: 1/2 cup yellow split moong 1/2 cup masoor dal 1/4 cup whole urad (white) Oliver Schauf (left) and Suketu Talekar
1 tsp cumin seeds 1/4 cup thinly sliced onion (or finely chopped)
WHAT’S COOKING?
Beer has great culinary use as an ingredient in cooking. A great seasoning agent, beer can be used as a marinade for chicken, meat or fish. In fact in roasting and baking, it’s great for basting and, in gravies, it imparts a rich, dark colour and, of course, a fabulous flavour.
1 tsp finely chopped green chilies

Ingredients 5 toasted brown bread slices 3/4 cup grated carrot 1/2 cup crumbled low fat paneer
WHAT CLICKED The consumer preferences in metropolitan India have, over the last decade or so, undergone a tectonic shift and the idea of a ‘better beer’ sits bang in the middle of this macro trend. Suketu adds, “Allow me to explain a little more. An average metro consumer is now more travelled, more connected (due to the rise of digital media) and consequently far more ‘clued in’ to global trends than his/her counterpart a decade back.” Bist believes a good market potential, affordable rents and possibility of getting license has worked for it. But he also points out, “The quality of beer in Pune is still not up to mark. We hope that will improve over time.” FLAVOURS AND VARIETIES At any time at DBC there are a minimum of four styles of beer and a maximum of six on tap. “Of these two, Doolally’s Hefeweizen and Doolally’s Apple Cider, are our staples (you will find them all year round) and the remaining two to four change every month. In total we have brewed over 40 different styles of beers for our consumers,” adds Oliver. At IBC, Wheat beer, India Pale Ale and Stout are also very popular. LOCAL TWIST Using unique local ingredients
has now become the new trend and almost once every quarter they brew a beer that has a unique local twist! Oliver says, “In the past, a chance encounter with a quintessentially Maharashtrian grain (bajri) led us to India’s first millet beer. Similar experiments with Alphonso
mangoes, Karavand and jaggery have given us very gratif ying results, both from the consumer perspective and as creative endeavours.” WHAT NEXT? About how things will play out going forward, given that IBC is delivering quality beer, Suketu thinks this concept will continue
to attract a lot of consumer attention and consequently a lot of competition. He expects even more states to reform their excise policies in the coming years, paving the way for such businesses and more and more beer drinkers coming over from the ‘dark side’! IBC plans to expand to other locations and also start a production brewery. CONSUMER SPEAK While the business side sounds promising and exciting, beer enthusiasts express their views on freshly brewed beer versus bottled malt. Atik Peerzada, businessman, states that a fresh brewhouse is like an ice cream parlour. “There are varied flavours to pick and choose from and they give you taste shots too that help narrow down your pick for the day. The taste of a fresh beer is refreshing and different from that of a bottled one,” says Atik, who also enjoys the happy hours that these places offer. Agreeing with him is Rohit who comes down from Mumbai every weekend to experiment a new flavour at one of the many brewhouses in Pune. “A chilled bottle of beer should be an option only while travelling,” laughs Rohit as he adds, “Fresh brews are enjoyed best directly from the tap!” anjali.shetty@goldensparrow.com

Method • Rinse the moong and urad lentils and soak them together for an hour. Grind into a fine batter. Stir in all the remaining ingredients. • Preheat a non-stick flat skillet on medium heat. Once ready, pour a ladle of batter into the centre and spreading it thin from the center to the edges into a circle. • Let it cook for about a minute on medium high heat, until you notice that the edges begin to start turning crisp and brown. At this stage flip the chilla over to the other side and allow it to cook for another minute until the bottom is cooked with brown spots. Once done remove from skillet and place it on a serving platter. Continue the same process with the remaining batter and serve hot. Nutrition: Moong dal is a good high protein, low fat alternative to meat dishes.
Method • Combine the carrot, paneer, tomato, green chilies, coriander, butter and salt in a deep bowl and mix well. Divide into 5 equal portions. Place one portion of the mixture on each toast and bake in a pre-heated at 150° C (300° F) for 5 minutes. Serve hot. • Nutrition: Make with toasted brown bread slices topped with a mixture of low-fat cottage cheese, grated carrots, tomatoes et al. You will enjoy each mouthful of the carrot and paneer toast, and feel good about the Vitamin A, iron and fibre boost you get from it. (Recipes by Pradeep Persoya, executive sous chef, The Westin )

This one comes with a four-cylinder, two-litre turbo-petrol engine that makes 355bhp and is currently the most powerful fourcylinder engine in the world. It drives all four wheels via the AMGtweaked 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. Quite a change from the eight and twelve-cylinder AMGs we are used to. The CLA 45 AMG is new for India, but not to other markets. The CLA is based on the A-Class and to that extent, the CLA 45 AMG shares its mechanical bits with the A 45 AMG. So, you get the same

There’s little lag and power is available on demand, which makes this car staggeringly fast in everyday conditions. The 7-speed DCT is a rather quick acting box and upshifts on demand, though it sometimes hesitates to downshift. It has three modes – Comfort, Sport and Manual – and there’s a launch control program as well. Sadly though, this AMG doesn’t have the hairy chested gorilla growl of the V8s. It sounds rather tame and the only
exciting noise it makes is a ‘BRAAP’ on every fullthrottle upshift. Nevertheless, this car is good fun to drive. There’s lots of grip, body control is excellent, the steering is well weighted and direct and you can really lean on the front tyres. What’s missing is a bit of feedback and the fact that this is primarily a front-wheel drive car with power sent to the rear wheels when needed. So, you need to pick your line and add power as you drive through the corner. Pile on the power early and the car tends to understeer a wee bit before the traction control kicks in and pulls you back in line. Merc hasn’t announced prices yet, but we expect it to cost around Rs 65-70 lakh. You don’t get as much equipment as you might expect, but then again, what you’re paying for is the engineering that’s gone into the chassis and engine. ouseph@goldensparrow.com

We’ll get to that, but before that let me tell what the new car is like. The new Fiesta is a good-looking sedan, though the silhouette bears a striking resemblance to the outgoing model. Ford’s new ‘Kinetic’ design language has lent the car a sporty image; while the large chrome grille is very Aston Martin-esque. The slimmer headlamps, sculpted bonnet and new fivespoke alloys all add to the image. The beefy wheel arches leave the wheels looking a mite small though. The 2014 leg room – a point of contention in the previous Fiesta also retains the earlier car’s five-speed model – has also been extended for more rear manual transmission. While the diesel motor passenger comfort, though it isn’t as spacious as puts a damper on the car’s sportiness, it has
been tuned for better fuel efficiency, with Ford claiming an outstanding 25.01kmpl. In a straight-line, the 1.5-litre diesel motor takes a leisurely 14 seconds to 100kmph according to the manufacturer, and a top speed of 170kmph. Turbo-lag below 1700rpm is quite noticeable though power delivery after that is linear all the way to 4000rpm. NVH levels are marginally better with harsh engine notes only filtering into the cabin at the redline. As expected from Ford, the 2014 Fiesta is at home on the twisties, thanks to a brilliant ride/ handling set-up. The electric power steering is quite light at city speeds and weights up well on the highway, lending stability during cornering, all the while providing more than adequate feedback (something its rivals fail to deliver). The phrase ‘floats like a butterfly’ is quite apt as bumps and speed breakers are minor obstacles while larger potholes are handled with aplomb. Body roll is kept at a minimum while the chassis feels tight. The assisted brakes and 195/60 R15 tyres do a good job of bringing the 2014 Fiesta to a halt, though the heavy front end tends to dip when braking hard. It seems like Ford may have the proverbial golden goose on its hands as the 2014 Fiesta provides everything the outgoing did and a bit more. The looks, interiors, equipment levels and the competitive pricing give the car a much needed boost in the segment, as the sedan can finally go toe-totoe with its mid-sized rivals. The sedan will appeal to those who prefer to drive rather than be driven, though they will feel let down by the slow-revving diesel motor and its feeble bottom-end performance. The refreshed midsized sedan comes in three trims: the entrylevel Ambiente (`7,83,722), Trend (`8,72,159) and the top-specced Titanium (`9,47,303, all prices ex-showroom Pune). rivan@evo.in
I’m looking at buying a good 150cc motorcycle. After reading your review of the Yamaha FZ-S, I was unsure whether I should go for it or the TVS RTR 160 or Honda Trigger. The RTR has been the benchmark in performance even if it is getting old. How does the FZ-S compare?
The FZ-S is a capable all-rounder and will do everything you ask of it. The Honda is the smoothest of them all, whereas the TVS RTR has a rorty, sporting character that will appeal to those who want a funto-ride machine. It will outperform the FZ-S in the performance department, and is more urgent in comparison to the FZ’s relaxed nature. That said, the FZ-S is an excellent handler, plush and comfortable on long rides and good around corners as well. It just won’t win any traffic light drags. n one hand we complain that modern life does not value human relationships; but on the other, people form deep bonds across the barriers of age, gender and religion. The people of Pune speak of such relationships forged by love, mutual interests and mental wavelength. Three Punekars tell us about their special bonds. “There are things I can share only with her and not even with my mother.” Garima Singh and Chitralekha Das 23-year-old Garima Singh was in the seventh standard when she first met Chitralekha Das. Her army family moved to Pune in 2003 and shifted to the Controllerate of Quality Assurance (Special Vehicles) [CQA (SV)] Colony quarters at Dehu Road. It was there that Garima met Chitralekha Das, who is now 60 years old. “My father was in the army so we were always on the move,” says Garima, an MBA student. “Pune was alien to us, but we found family in Das uncle and aunty. The day I met aunty, I knew this bond was going to last forever.” Chitralekha, who used to be a dance and music teacher, often required someone to record songs for her; young Garima stepped in. “That’s how our bond started to develop,” says Garima. “Also, I loved going to her place and eat macher jhol bhaat. As a Punjabi, I was tired of eating rajma-chawal and chole-chawal. I grew up on aunty’s fish. Even today,

So much so that Garima chose to pursue her studies in Pune even after her parents moved to Dehradun. “Just knowing that aunty would be nearby reassured my parents of my safety. Even after so many years, our relationship hasn’t changed,” she says. For Chitralekha, Garima is the daughter she never had. “I have two sons and always missed having a daughter with whom I could have girly talks,” says the boutique owner. “With Garima around, I have no complaints. Whenever I’m stuck while designing saris, Garima helps me out. Whenever she faces a dilemma about what to wear, Matters of she comes to me and I the heart love dressing her up.” Their relationship is fluid. “I don’t call her very often or visit her frequently,” says Garima, “but when we meet, we take off from where we left. There are things I can share only with her and not even with my mother because I know she will not Garima Singh pursued her studies in Pune, even after her parents moved away, because of Chitralekha Das judge me.”
DR SEEMA DARODE, CLINICAL AND SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST These relationships are platonic. Each partner is looking for an emotional support. Younger people are on the lookout for a fatherly or motherly figure. The older person is also looking for emotional, mental support which may be missing at home. Moreover, there is no resentment or expectations from each other.
VAISHALI DIWAKAR, SOCIOLOGIST Friendship transcends all barriers. Factors like age, sex are not taken into account when we forge a new relationship. Social media is also offering a platform by which we can be friends with anyone across the world. These kinds of relationships are two-way, mutually beneficial process. In case of the younger person, (s)he has a person to look up to whenever (s)he is confused. For the older person, connecting to the younger person is like keeping in touch with young India. It’s a way of being aware of the new trends in fashion, cars automobiles and so on.

"Gitanjali’s presence lifts me up whenever I am in the dumps" Gitanjali Rai and Indrajeet Handique “I met Indrajeet when he was just nine years old,” says Gitanjali Rai, devotional singer and life coach. “He and his friends used to come over to my place during satsangs at Wanawdi. It was mostly to eat the prasadam. Naughty as he was, he would wait for the programme to get over. Then he would tiptoe to where the musical instruments were kept and start plucking at the tanpura or thump the tabla. Seeing his interest in music, I asked his mother to get in touch with a music teacher.” That was many moons ago, in 2003, when Indrajeet had first landed with his family in the city from Assam. At Gitanjali’s advice, he started studying music. “The day he learnt his first chord,” says Gitanjali, who is in her 40s, “he ran up to my place and asked me to play the same chord on the harmonium.” That was how they connected. Indrajeet is now 20 years old and Gitanjali has his guide through every stage. “When Indrajeet reached his teens, he became restless and his thoughts and expressions

Wanawadi, Kavita met Niharika. Niharika was lost in her thoughts. Kavita noticed the wistful look on her face and sat down beside her. The 36-year-old home-maker had seen Niharika and her friends chatting, laughing and discussing life animatedly around the colony. Niharika was apprehensive as her medical entrance exams were just round the corner. It was important for her to secure good rank and get admission in a reputed Government Medical College. She wanted to follow in her father’s footstep, who is a doctor in AFMC (Armed Forces Medical College). Kavita listened to her woes and stood by her. They kept meeting each other and the bond grew. Three years later, not a day has passed without them updating each other about their lives. When Niharika got through the medical entrance exams, Kavita was the first person she shared the news with. Niharika is just as important to Kavita. “From the first moment I met her,” says Kavita, “I knew she was important, special, different and very very rare. Though only 20 years old, she
is very mature. She has stood by me in moments of despair. She has touched my life. Our relationship has been a learning experience.” Kavita is an anchor who has helped her evolve. They usually call each other a couple of times a day and go out shopping or for dinner on weekends. “I am a shopaholic,” Niharika discloses. “Kavita has a good fashion sense and her opinion matters to me. I remember the time she helped me choose the right accessories for my yellow and blue kurta.” When Niharika visits, Kavita doesn’t forget to get her favourite ice-cream, paani-puri and bhel. “In the last couple of years, we have found something few people experience,” says Kavita. Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan in an All India Radio broadcast a few months ago spoke of the books that he loves- and the ones he recommends to friends and fans TGS News Service @tgs_editorial
C
ommuting in a car in Pune in slow moving, jam-ridden traffic is not frustrating but enjoyable because you get to hear so many interesting things on FM radio. It was one such day when AIR’s immensely popular Vividh Bharati ran an almost twohour long interview with Aamir Khan. In that interview, Khan spoke of many things, the most interesting being, in this writer’s opinion, his love for books. The actor then went on to recommend books to his listeners. Two books that Khan recommended are A Short History of Almost Everything by American writer Bill Bryson and The Lives of a Cell by Lewis Thomas. Dealing with the seemingly boring topic
of science and scientific research, both books are interesting and refreshing. In his book about the “history of nearly everything”, Bryson entertains us with the history of the universe and the theories about its birth, plate tectonics, diversity of life forms, attitudes and idiosyncracies of scientists and the development of human society. Bryson points to the destruction of the environment caused by humans and asks whether humans are indeed self-destructive? Writing in an entertaining and persuasive style, he asks the people of the world to take care of the Books That planet and stop the destruction I Love caused by materialism and consumerism.
The book touches a number of sciences ranging from geology and palaeontology to cosmology and evolution. Definitely a joy for those who love books. Lives of a Cell by Lewis Thomas is a profoundly thought-provoking book because it draws similarities between “the human condition and the way any other biological organism works”. In an easy to understand manner, Thomas describes cell biology and compares it to the human condition. His style of writing is so fascinating that there is an opportunity to add to our knowledge in a very interesting way and also think about the issues that he addresses. It’s a book about biology and about life. It’s a book that makes you think about life in ways that we may never have. Aamir Khan is certainly one of those “thinking actors” who reflects on issues facing society and does whatever he can in his own way. His thought-provoking serial Satyamev Jayate is a case in point. Thanks to Pune’s messy traffic, this writer got to read two interesting books and that too, the ones recommended by an actor one respects and admires.

t wouldn’t be hyperbolic to say that we, the people of India, are intelligent, innovative, good intentioned and peaceloving. The cliché goes that we have the “best laws in the world” but where we fail miserably is in the realm of execution — the ability to get things done. Therefore, when an E Sreedharan gives us a world-class metro, or a Modi gives at least some elements of good governance which cannot be denied — everyone is impressed. Why can’t the same be replicated in our government offices and in municipal bodies? Why can’t our courts be more efficient? One of the reasons for this is that good intentions and good laws are not enough; what is missing is execution — the ability to get things done. The legendary India-born US-based

Three mistakes women make while buying shoes
H
ow long have you been wearing the same shoe size? It is important to realise that women’s feet are constantly changing due to factors such as ageing, weight gain or loss and pregnancy. Still there are a few mistakes that women make when buying that perfect pair. Buying ill-fitting shoes and wearing heels for a long time are basic mistakes that women make while buying shoes, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
Buying shoes that do not fit 1constantly Always buy shoes that fit you now. People try on shoes (especially when
the heels are on sale), think to themselves “They feel a little tight,” and then convince themselves “Well, they’ll stretch…”. Nine out of 10 times, they won’t, or at least not
enough to make them really comfortable. Don’t buy a pair of heels with the hope that they’ll fit in the future. Also, the majority
of us have one foot bigger than the other, so when buying shoes fit the shoe to your larger foot first. Buying heels in the morning 2 Shop for heels towards the end of the day if possible. Our feet swell towards the

end of the day and this will give you a truer fitting of the shoe. As well as being uncomfortable, no one wants a foot muffin top on a sexy pair of heels.
Wearing heels for way too long 3 Wearing heels for a long time is not good for your feet, neither on a short
nor long term basis. If you wear heels to work or on a night out, try to bring a comfortable pair of shoes along with you so don’t have to
wear them for a long time. Once you’ve finished at work or your event is over, swap those heels for a comfy pair of shoes. IANS
